INTRODUCTION

What is required to become a skilled and effectiveairframe and powerplant (A & P) aviation mechanic?Although some individuals possess more knowledgeand skills than others, no one is a natural-born aviationmechanic. Competent aviation mechanics become sothrough study, training, and experience.

This knowledge test guide will answer most of yourquestions about taking an aviation mechanic general, airframe, or powerplant knowledge test by coveringthe following areas: knowledge test eligibilityrequirements; knowledge areas on the tests; descriptionsof the tests; process for taking a knowledge test; useof test aids and materials; cheating or otherunauthorized conduct; validity of Airman Test Reports;and retesting procedures.

This guide will help in preparing you to take one or allof the following tests.

Q Aviation Mechanic—General

Q Aviation Mechanic—Airframe

Q Aviation Mechanic—Powerplant

This guide is not offered as an easy way to obtain thenecessary information for passing the knowledge tests.Rather, the intent of this guide is to define and narrowthe field of study to the required knowledge areasincluded in the tests.

KNOWLEDGE TEST ELIGIBILITY

REQUIREMENTS

The general qualifications for an aviation mechaniccertificate require you to have a combination ofexperience, knowledge, and skill. If you are pursuingan aviation mechanic certificate with airframe andpowerplant ratings, you should review the appropriate

sections of Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations(14 CFR) part 65 for detailed information pertaining toeligibility requirements. Further information may beobtained from the nearest Flight Standards DistrictOffice (FSDO).

Before taking the certification knowledge and practicaltests, you must meet the eligibility requirements. Thedetermination of eligibility of applicants for the general, airframe, and powerplant tests is made on the basis ofone of the following options:

1. Civil and/or military experience. (See 14CFR part 65, Subpart A—General, and Subpart D—Mechanics.) If you believe you are qualified to exercisethis option, you must have your experience evaluatedand certified by an FAA Aviation Safety Inspector(Airworthiness). If the inspector determines that youhave the required experience, two FAA Forms8610-2, Airman Certificate and/or Rating Application, are completed. These forms are issued, and MUST bepresented along with appropriate identification to takethe corresponding knowledge tests. Your eligibility totest does not expire.

2. Graduation from an FAA-certificatedAviation Maintenance Technician School (AMTS).Depending upon the testing facility affiliation1, agraduation certificate, certificate of completion, or anFAA Form 8610-2, Airman Certificate and/or RatingApplication (properly endorsed) is required, along withproper identification.

If you are taking the tests at a computer testing centerand the practical testing is administered by a designatedmechanic examiner (DME), and BOTH are affiliatedwith the AMTS, a copy of the graduation certificate orcertificate of completion (along with properidentification) may be all that you are required topresent. In this case, the school, the testing center, theDME, and the local FSDO will all be involved and know

AVIATION MECHANIC GENERAL,

AIRFRAME, AND POWERPLANT

KNOWLEDGE TEST GUIDE

1Affiliation is a procedural arrangement to provide for graduates totake the knowledge and practical tests. The arrangement requirementsare agreed to by a particular school, testing center, and designatedmechanic examiner (DME), having also been approved by thesupervising FAA FSDO.

1

Page 6: Aviation Mechanic General. Airframe, and Powerplant ...aircraft-mechanics.com/files/faa-g-8082-3-mechanic-test-guide.pdf · Aviation Mechanic General. Airframe, and Powerplant Knowledge

what authorization is needed. On the other hand, if eitherone, or both the testing center and the DME are NOTaffiliated with the AMTS, then FAA Form 8610-2 isrequired.

KNOWLEDGE AREAS ON THE TESTS

Aviation mechanic tests are comprehensive becausethey must test your knowledge in many subject areas. The subject areas for the tests are the same as therequired AMTS curriculum subjects listed in 14 CFRpart 147, Appendixes B, C, and D. However, the subjectarea titled “Unducted Fans” (in Appendix D) is not atested subject at this time. The terms used in 14 CFRpart 147, Appendixes B, C, and D are defined in14 CFR part 147, Appendix A.

DESCRIPTIONS OF THE TESTS

All test questions are the objective, multiple-choice type. Each question can be answered by the selection of asingle response. Each test question is independent ofother questions; therefore, a correct response to onedoes not depend upon, or influence, the correct responseto another.

The aviation mechanic general test contains 50questions, and you are allowed 1.5 hours to completethe test.

The aviation mechanic airframe and aviation mechanicpowerplant tests contain 100 questions, and you areallowed 2 hours to complete each test.

Communication between individuals through the useof words is a complicated process. In addition to beingan exercise in the application and use of aeronauticalknowledge, a knowledge test is also an exercise incommunication since it involves the use of the writtenlanguage. Since the tests involve written rather thanspoken words, communication between the test writerand the person being tested may become a difficultmatter if care is not exercised by both parties.Consequently, considerable effort is expended to writeeach question in a clear, precise manner. Make sureyou read the instructions given with the test, as well asthe statements in each test item.

When taking a test, keep the following points in mind:

• Answer each question in accordance with the latestregulations and guidance publications.• Read each question carefully before looking at thepossible answers. You should clearly understand theproblem before attempting to solve it.• After formulating an answer, determine whichchoice corresponds with that answer. The answerchosen should completely resolve the problem.• From the answers given, it may appear that thereis more than one possible answer; however, there isonly one answer that is correct and complete. The otheranswers are either incomplete, erroneous, or representcommon misconceptions.• If a certain question is difficult for you, it is best tomark it for review and proceed to the next question. After you answer the less difficult questions, return tothose which you marked for review and answer them. The review marking procedure will be explained to youprior to starting the test. Although the computer shouldalert you to unanswered questions, make sure everyquestion has an answer recorded. This procedure willenable you to use the available time to maximumadvantage.• When solving a calculation problem, select theanswer closest to your solution. The problem has beenchecked several times by various individuals; therefore,if you have solved it correctly, your answer will becloser to the correct answer than any of the otherchoices.

PROCESS FOR TAKING A KNOWLEDGE

TEST

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) hasavailable hundreds of computer testing centersworldwide. These testing centers offer the full rangeof airman knowledge tests including recreationalthrough airline transport pilot, parachute rigger, mechanic, and mechanic examiner tests. Refer toappendix 1 of this guide for a list of computer testingdesignees (CTD’s).

The first step in taking a knowledge test is theregistration process. You may either call the central1-800 numbers (refer to appendix 1 for 1-800 numbers)or simply use the walk-in basis. If you choose to use

2

Page 7: Aviation Mechanic General. Airframe, and Powerplant ...aircraft-mechanics.com/files/faa-g-8082-3-mechanic-test-guide.pdf · Aviation Mechanic General. Airframe, and Powerplant Knowledge

the 1-800 number to register, you will need to select atesting center, schedule a test date, and make financialarrangements for test payment. You may register fortests several weeks in advance, and you may cancelyour appointment according to the CTD’s cancellationpolicy. If you do not follow the CTD’s cancellationpolicies, you could be subject to a cancellation fee.

The next step in taking a knowledge test is providingproper identification. You should determine whatknowledge test prerequisites are necessary beforegoing to the computer testing center. Your instructor orlocal FSDO can assist you with what documentationto take to the testing facility. Testing center personnelwill not begin the test until your identification is verified.A limited number of tests do not require authorization.

Acceptable forms of authorization are:

• FAA Form 8610-2.• A graduation certificate or certificate of completionto an affiliated testing center as previously explained.• An original (not photocopy) failed Airman TestReport, passing Airman Test Report, or expired AirmanTest Report.

Before you take the actual test, you will have the optionto take a sample test. The actual test is time limited;however, you should have sufficient time to completeand review your test.

Upon completion of the knowledge test, you will receiveyour Airman Test Report, with the testing center’sembossed seal, which reflects your score.

The Airman Test Report lists the subject matterknowledge codes for questions answered incorrectly. The total number of subject matter knowledge codesshown on the Airman Test Report is not necessarily anindication of the total number of questions answeredincorrectly. Appendix 1 contains a list of subject matterknowledge codes that refer to the knowledge areas.Study these knowledge areas to improve yourunderstanding of the subject matter.

The Airman Test Report must be presented to theexaminer prior to taking the practical test. During theoral portion of the practical test, the examiner is requiredto evaluate the noted areas of deficiency.

Should you require a duplicate Airman Test Report dueto loss or destruction of the original, send a signedrequest accompanied by a check or money order for$1 payable to the FAA. Your request should be sent tothe Federal Aviation Administration, AirmenCertification Branch, AFS-760, P.O. Box 25082,Oklahoma City, OK 73125.

USE OF TEST AIDS AND MATERIALS

Airman knowledge tests require applicants to analyzethe relationship between variables needed to solveaviation problems, in addition to testing for accuracy ofa mathematical calculation. The intent is that allapplicants are tested on concepts rather than rotecalculation ability. It is permissible to use certaincalculating devices when taking airman knowledge tests, provided they are used within the following guidelines. The term “calculating devices” is interchangeable withsuch items as calculators, computers, or any similardevices designed for aviation-related activities.

1. Guidelines for use of test aids and materials. The applicant may use test aids and materials withinthe guidelines listed below, if actual test questions oranswers are not revealed.

a. Applicants may use test aids, such as acalculating device that is directly related to the test. Inaddition, applicants may use any test materials providedwith the test.

b. The test proctor may provide a calculatingdevice to applicants and deny them use of their personalcalculating device if the applicant’s device does nothave a screen that indicates all memory has been erased. The test proctor must be able to determine thecalculating device’s erasure capability. The use ofcalculating devices incorporating permanent orcontinuous type memory circuits without erasurecapability are prohibited.

c. The use of magnetic cards, magnetic tapes, modules, computer chips, or any other device uponwhich prewritten programs or information related tothe test can be stored and retrieved are prohibited.Printouts of data will be surrendered at the completionof the test if the calculating device used incorporatesthis design feature.

3

Page 8: Aviation Mechanic General. Airframe, and Powerplant ...aircraft-mechanics.com/files/faa-g-8082-3-mechanic-test-guide.pdf · Aviation Mechanic General. Airframe, and Powerplant Knowledge

d. The use of any booklet or manualcontaining instructions related to the use of theapplicant’s calculating device is not permitted.

e. Dictionaries are not allowed in the testingarea.

f. The test proctor makes the finaldetermination relating to test materials and personalpossessions that the applicant may take into the testingarea.

2. Guidelines for dyslexic applicant’s use of testaids and materials. A dyslexic applicant may requestapproval from the local Flight Standards District Office(FSDO) to take an airman knowledge test using one ofthe three options listed in preferential order:

a. Option One. Use current testing facilitiesand procedures whenever possible.

b. Option Two. Applicants may use aFranklin Speaking Wordmaster to facilitate the testingprocess. The Wordmaster is a self-containedelectronic thesaurus that audibly pronounces typed inwords and presents them on a display screen. It has abuilt-in headphone jack for private listening. Theheadphone feature will be used during testing to avoiddisturbing others.

c. Option Three. Applicants who do notchoose to use the first or second option may request atest proctor to assist in reading specific words or termsfrom the test questions and supplement material. Inthe interest of preventing compromise of the testingprocess, the test proctor should be someone who isnon-aviation oriented. The test proctor will providereading assistance only, with no explanation of wordsor terms. The Airman Testing Standards Branch,AFS-630, will assist in the selection of a test site andtest proctor.

CHEATING OR OTHER UNAUTHORIZED

CONDUCT

Computer testing centers are required to follow strictsecurity procedures to avoid test compromise. Theseprocedures are established by the FAA and are coveredin FAA Order 8080.6, Conduct of Airman KnowledgeTests. The FAA has directed testing centers toterminate a test at any time a test proctor suspects acheating incident has occurred. An FAA investigationwill then be conducted. If the investigation determinesthat cheating or other unauthorized conduct hasoccurred, then any airman certificate or rating that youhold may be revoked, and you will be prohibited for1 year from applying for or taking any test for acertificate or rating under 14 CFR part 65.

VALIDITY OF AIRMAN TEST REPORTS

Airman Test Reports are valid for the 24-calendarmonth period preceding the month you complete thepractical test. If the Airman Test Report expires beforecompletion of the practical test, you must retake theknowledge test.

RETESTING PROCEDURES

If you receive a grade lower than a 70 percent andwish to retest, you must present the following to testingcenter personnel:

• failed Airman Test Report; or• if you apply within 30 days, a failed Airman TestReport with an endorsement from a mechaniccertificate holder with the same rating(s) you are testingfor, certifying that additional instruction has been given, and that you have been found competent to pass thetest.

If you decide to retake the test in anticipation of a betterscore, you may retake the test after 30 days from thedate your last test was taken. The FAA will not allowyou to retake a passed test before the 30-day periodhas lapsed. Prior to retesting, you must give your currentAirman Test Report to the test proctor. The last testtaken will reflect the official score.

1. If the cross sectional area of a given conductoris increased to four times its original value, andthe length and temperature remain constant, theresistance of the conductor will be

A—one-fourth its original value.B—four times its original value.C—found by multiplying the original resistance by the

percentage increase in cross-sectional area.

Answer A—Subject Matter Knowledge Code: A02.AC 65-9A, Airframe & Powerplant MechanicsGeneral Handbook.

One of the factors affecting the resistance of aconductor is cross-sectional area. Resistance variesinversely with the cross-sectional area of aconductor. If the cross-sectional area of a conductoris doubled, the resistance to current flow will bereduced by half (all other factors remainingunchanged).

2. When making a forward weight and balancecheck to determine that the center of gravity (cg)will not exceed the forward limit during extremeconditions, the items of useful load which shouldbe computed at their minimum weights are thoselocated aft of the

A—forward cg limit.B—rearward cg limit.C—empty weight cg.

Answer A—Subject Matter Knowledge Code: C02.AC 65-9A, Airframe & Powerplant MechanicsGeneral Handbook.

When making a forward weight and balance check, part of the information needed is the minimumweights of the items of useful load that are locatedaft of the forward cg limit.

3. What must a certificated mechanic with bothairframe and powerplant ratings do prior toreturning to service an aircraft on which he orshe has performed and approved a 100-hourinspection?

A—Present his/her work and records to a mechanicholding an Inspection Authorization for finalapproval and release.

B—Make the proper entries in the appropriate aircraftmaintenance record.

C—Notify the local FAA FSDO in writing of his/herintention to return the aircraft to service.

Answer B—Subject Matter Knowledge Code: I02.14 CFR section 43.11(a).

The person approving for return to service anaircraft after any inspection shall make an entry inthe maintenance record containing the requiredinformation.

1. Which of the following drill bit types work bestwhen drilling an aramid fiber (Kevlar) compositelaminate?

A—Tool steel with standard grind.B—Diamond dust coated.C—Carbide W-Point.

Answer C—Subject Matter Knowledge Code: D03.AMR, Aircraft Maintenance and Repair.

Standard tool steels dull rapidly when drilling ortrimming composite materials. If diamond-dustcoated drills are used, the fibers will grab at thedrill bit and pull the diamond from the base metalor fill voids in the dust pattern with material. TheW-Point carbide drill design lasts longer and helpssolve fuzz, delamination, and burn problems whendrilling.

2. What is the minimum edge distance allowedfor aluminum alloy single lap sheet splicescontaining a single row of rivets as compared to ajoint with multiple rows, all rivets being equal indiameter?

A—The minimum edge distance for the single row isgreater than that for the multiple row.

B—The minimum edge distance for the single row isless than that for the multiple row.

C—The minimum edge distance for the single row isequal to that for the multiple row.

Answer C—Subject Matter Knowledge Code: D06.AC 43.13-1B, Acceptable Methods, Techniques, and Practices - Aircraft Inspection and Repair.

The minimum edge distance is to be not less thantwo times the diameter of the rivets used for bothsingle and multiple row single lap sheet splices.

3. What is commonly used to connect anemergency source of power, and at the same timedisconnect the normal hydraulic source fromcritical parts of a landing gear or wheel brakingsystem for operation (usually when the normalsource system fails)?

A—Selector valve.B—Shuttle valve.C—Sequence valve.

Answer B—Subject Matter Knowledge Code: K01.AMR, Aircraft Maintenance and Repair.

The function of a shuttle valve is to provide a meansof disconnecting a normal source of hydraulic (orpneumatic) power and connecting an emergencysource of power (hydraulic or pneumatic) to operatethe critical parts of a system.

SAMPLE TEST QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

AVIATION MECHANIC—POWERPLANT

1. If an unsupercharged reciprocating engineequipped with a constant speed propeller isoperated at part throttle and at cruising rpm, areduction in rpm with no change in throttle settingwill result in

A—no change in manifold pressure.B—an increase in manifold pressure.C—a decrease in manifold pressure.

Answer B—Subject Matter Knowledge Code: A03.JSPT, A & P Technician Powerplant Textbook.

A reduction in rpm setting (propeller pitch increase)on an unsupercharged reciprocating engineequipped with a constant speed propeller, with nochange in throttle setting, will cause an increase inmanifold pressure. In this case, the decrease in rpmis caused by a higher load being placed on theengine rather than a reduction in fuel flow into theengine.

2. What are the two main sections of a turbineengine for inspection purposes?

A—Hot and cold.B—Combustion and exhaust.C—Compressor and turbine.

Answer A—Subject Matter Knowledge Code: B02.JSPT, A & P Technician Powerplant Textbook.

For inspection purposes, the two main sections ofa turbine engine are hot and cold. The cold sectionincludes the compressor back through the diffuser. The hot section includes the combustor and turbine.

3. Aluminum propeller blade failure at the site ofan unrepaired nick or scratch is usually the resultof

A—material defect.B—intergrannular corrosion.C—stress concentration.

Answer C—Subject Matter Knowledge Code: R07.AP, Aircraft Powerplants.

Even a small defect such as a nick or scratch causesa concentration of stresses that may develop into acrack. The crack in turn results in even greaterstress concentration. The resulting growth of thecrack will almost inevitably result in blade failure.

NOTE: The questions on the aviation mechanic tests pertain to FAA regulations and a wide variety of aircraft, powerplants, and systems. The information contained in the questions must never take precedence over specificinformation furnished by a manufacturer in the maintenance of an aircraft.
