Cover Photo: N385FE, a Douglas DC-10-10/F with FedEx is seen at Dallas/Fort Worth in June 2016. Originally delivered to United Airlines as N1820U in February 1974, this frame was converted to a freighter and joined FedEx in July 1997. It was retired in November 2018 and now awaits a nasty fate with the scrapman.

Air Canada Rouge (6CDF) will operate 3x weekly seasonal service from Toronto Pearson to Quito (UIO) beginning on December 8.

This route will be operated by Boeing 767-300/ER equipment. 9

TSA found 201 guns in carry-on bags from February 1-17, 2019. 10 For the week ending February 24, TSA found 83 guns in carry-on bags, 11 and another 76 for the

week ending March 3. 12 For the year through March 3, TSA has found 641 guns in carry-on bags and is on pace for nearly 3,800 guns this year. Click here to see an airport by airport count of guns found in 2019.

A February 23 Biman Bangladesh flight from Dhaka (DAC) to Dubai (DXB) was diverted to Chittagong (CGP) after a passenger tried to

enter the cockpit during flight. When he was blocked by crew members, he brandished a pistol, later confirmed to be real, and claimed he had explosives and would blow up the plane. Upon landing in Chittagong, he allowed all 142 passengers and most of the crew off the plane. Bangladeshi Army commandos later stormed the plane and shot the hijacker, who was apparently having issues with his wife, dead. 13 The incident aircraft was S2-AHV, a Boeing 737-8E9.

An Air Canada (ARNF) flight attendant asked passengers who was the owner of an unclaimed bag that wouldn’t fit into an overhead bin on a February 15 flight from Fort Lauderdale (FLL); a passenger replied she hoped there wasn’t a bomb inside. That passenger now faces charges for making a false threat. 14

A female passenger was stopped with a bottle of cognac at Beijing (PEK) and told it would not be permitted into the sterile area. Rather than surrendering the bottle or throwing it away, she sat

in a corner and drained the entire bottle. You will perhaps not be surprised to learn the matter ended with the woman languishing on the floor in a drunken stupor. 15 She did not make her flight.

1,529 live turtles were found in four pieces of luggage belonging to a passenger arriving at Manila (MNL) from Hong Kong (HKG) earlier this month. 16

Cleaning crews discovered a handgun in the cockpit of a Delta Air Lines (DALA) aircraft in Atlanta (ATL) on February 18. The gun was

thought to be left by a pilot who was a Federal Flight Deck Officer (FFDO). 17

Small improvised explosive devices were sent in the mail to offices at London Heathrow (LHR) and London City (LCY) airport, arriving on March 5. Staff at Heathrow opened the package, which immediately caught fire. Scotland Yard is investigating the incidents. 18

A Norwegian Air Shuttle (6NWF) Boeing 737-8 that diverted to Shiraz, Iran (SYZ) on December 14, 2018 with engine trouble was

finally ferried back to Stockholm (ARN) on February 22. Norwegian encountered significant difficulties in ferrying required spare parts into Iran due to U.S. sanctions. 19

Avianca (ANCF) will retire its fleet of ten Embraer E190s within the next year or so. Seven of the frames are flown by TACA (RJEF),

while another is operated by Avianca Costa Rica (SOKF). The final two are leased out to AeroMexico Connect (LVQF). 20 The move comes as part of a restructing of Avianca Holdings, the company that owns the various Avianca airlines. Guatemala City (GUA) will be upgraded to a focus city as part of the moves, with five new weekly flights added to New York Kennedy and Orlando (MCO).

Etihad Airways (YY6F) has sold its 50 percent ownership share in two buildlings in the United Arab Emirates for $327 million. One of

the buildings is a residential property that houses airline staff – that building will be leased back to Etihad through 2034. 22

American Airlines (AALA) will contribute $807 million to its pension plans this year, an increase from the $467 million it

contributed in 2018. American currently owes $16.4 billion in pension obligations and has $10.1 billion in funds set aside. 23

Delta Air Lines has opened reservations for revenue service on its new Airbus A330-900neo aircraft. United Airlines (CALA) fired 35 employees after an investigation into a brokering scheme in which the employees were selling

“buddy passes” meant for family and friends to others for cash. 47

Spirit Airlines (GTIA) has wrapped an Airbus A321-231 (N662NK) in special decals for the new Dumbo movie. The wrap should remain on

the aircraft for two months. 48

250 new automatic external defibrillators (AED) have been installed at Toronto Pearson. 49

Toronto Pearson was named the most improved airport in North America, according to annual awards handed out by Airports Council International this month. Pearson was deemed as the best airport in North America that serves over 40 million annual passengers. The awards continued in Canada, as Ottawa (YOW) took top marks for airports handling two to five million passengers and Fort McMurray (YMM) took the honors for airports under two million annual passengers. 50

The Canadian government has signaled its disapproval of a proposed merger between First Air (KBJF) and Canadian North, two airlines which specialize in northern Canadian operations. The Canadian Ministry of Transport suggested that the merger would essentially grant the new carrier a monopoly on routes in the remote northern Canadian and Arctic regions. 51 A final decision on the proposed merger is still to be issued.

Beijing’s new Daxing International Airport, slated to open in late September, has officially been assigned the code PKX by IATA. (If you were wondering, DAX

is already in use by Dazhou, Sichuan, China.) Daxing’s IATA code will be ZBAD.

VietJet confirmed that it has placed a $12.7 billion order for 20 Boeing 737 MAX 8 and 80 MAX 10 aircraft. This order comes on top of a

previous order for 100 frames. 52

Southwest Airlines (SWAA) has received final approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to begin Extended Twin-

Engined Operations (ETOPS) on flights to Hawaii. This move had been delayed by the recent partial federal government shutdown; Southwest is now selling tickets and will soon commence flights to various Hawaiian destinations. 53 Click here to see the initial routes that will be oeprated.

Southwest has sued its mechanics untion, the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association, with the airline suggesting that the mechanics are writing up frivolous maintenance issues in a bid to win a new contract. Southwest’s 2,700 mechanics have been without a contract for several years; the maintenance issues now are forcing heavy flight cancellations as aircraft are grounded. Southwest’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) stated that the flight cancellations and delays are costing Southwest millions of dollars a week. 54

Shannon, Ireland (SNN) will extend its U.S. Preclearance operational hours in a move welcomed by business jet operators and passengers. 55

India’s Jet Airways has now grounded as many as 25 aircraft due to their inability to pay the

leases on the frames. The groundings are forcing the carrier to cancel 200 flights a day – one third of its entire schedule. 56

Taiwan’s Starlux Airlines has firmed up a prior Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) into a concrete order for five Airbus A350-900 and 12 A350-1000 aircraft. Deliveries will occur from late 2021 through late 2024. Starlux seeks to commence flight operations in 2020. 57

Grupo AeroMexico flew 1.751 million passengers in January across AeroMexico (ASMF) and AeroMexico Connect flights, a 3.1

percent year-on-year decrease. System-wide load factor for the month was 81.8 percent.

International Airlines Group, parent of British Airways (BRAF), has placed a firm order for 18 Boeing 777X frames, with options for 24

more. The aircraft will of course be placed with British Airways and in all certainty replace will replace the last Boeing 747-400s on property by the time they are withdrawn in 2024. The sale is worth up to $18.6 billion at list prices. 58

British Airways has painted the second of four aircraft in a retro livery, celebrating the 100 year history of the carrier. G-EUPJ, an Airbus A319-131, is now adorned with the livery of British European Airways (BEA). BEA operated as a crown corporation from 1946 until 1974 when it merged with British

Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) to form the modern British Airways.

A March 4 Air Canada flight from Vancouver (YVR) to Toronto Pearson was delayed for five hours after a business class passenger became irate after learning he wouldn’t be getting his fish meal as requested on the flight. The man’s consternation and temper tantrum caused a delay, which then caused the crew to time-out, requiring a new crew to be found. Five hours later, the flight was able to depart – without the fish loving passenger. 59

A Georiga woman won $10,000 after reading the fine print in her travel insurance policy and finding a hidden contest. Buried at the end of the policy legalese was a statement saying that “if you've read this far, then you are one of the very few customers to review all of their policy documentation.” It then stated that whomever emailed first would win the money. 60

EVA Air Cargo (QOCF) will conclude Boeing 747 freighter service at the end of May. 61

An Atlas Air (UIEA) Boeing 767-375/ER/F (N1217A) crashed on approach to Houston Intercontinental (IAH) on February

23, landing in Trinity Bay, about 30 miles southeast of the airport. The aircraft had been oeprating Fl. 3591 on behalf of Amazon Prime. The water in the impact zone is only around ten feet deep. The aircraft went from 5,800 feet in altitude to 1,300 feet in nine seconds, losing height at a staggering 30,000 feet per minute and disintegrating upon impact. Two pilots and one deadheading Mesa

Omni Air International (CNMA) is planning to resume main-deck cargo operations. Omni was recently taken over by Air Transport

Services Group (ATSG). 63

Two Southwest Airlines Boeing 737s clipped wings at Newark, New Jersey (EWR) on March 2. The mishap occurred while one plane was taxiing out for departure to Fort Lauderdale (FLL). No passengers were injured but both aircraft were taken out of service for inspection. 64

UPDATE: Mexico’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC) has published its final report of AeroMexico Connect Fl. 2431 in Durango on July 31, 2018. 98 passengers and five crew were on board; all survived although 14 sustained injuries. The Embraer E-190 aircraft (XA-GAL) was written off. The report pins the blame on “impact against the runway caused by loss of control of the aircraft in the final phase of the take-off run by low altitude wind shear that caused a loss of speed and lift.” Incredibly, it emerged that the captain had allowed an observer who was a commercial pilot with a type rating for Beech King Air planes to sit in the first officer’s seat and act as the Pilot Flying during take-off. This pilot was not type rated for the Embraer E190 and had accumulated just 64 hours of simulator time on the type. 65

A Commutair (JJBA) Embraer ERJ-145 (N14171) operating as United Express from Newark, New Jersey (EWR) to Presque Isle, Maine (PQI) landed in a snow covered grassy area beside the runway. 28 passengers and three crew were on board, with the pilot and three passengers sustaining minor injuries. A snow plow had to clear the area before rescue services could reach the aircraft, which had come to rest in a pile of snow with substantial damage. 66 Presque Isle is an Essential Air Service (EAS) airport.

March 2 was Texas Independence Day, honoring the day in 1836 when Texas broke away from Mexico and created its own sovereign nation,

the Republic of Texas. If you have noticed that many of the various lights at your local airport no longer have that familiar orange hue, but more of a bright, white light, you are not alone. More and more airports are switching
