Introduction

Thank you for choosing Harman Kardon!With the purchase of a Harman KardonAVR5000 you are about to begin many years oflistening enjoyment. The AVR5000 has been cus-tom designed to provide all the excitement anddetail of movie sound tracks and every nuanceof musical selections. With onboard Dolby*Digital and DTS† decoding, the AVR5000 deliverssix discrete channels of audio that take advan-tage of the digital sound tracks from the latestDVD and LD releases and Digital Televisionbroadcasts.

While complex digital systems are hard at workwithin the AVR5000 to make all of this happen,hookup and operation are simple. Color-keyedconnections, a backlit, programmable and learn-ing remote control, and on-screen menus makethe AVR5000 easy to use. To obtain the maxi-mum enjoyment from your new receiver, weurge you to take the time to read through thismanual. This will ensure that connections tospeakers, source playback units and other exter-nal devices are made properly. In addition, afew minutes spent learning the functions of thevarious controls will enable you to take advan-tage of all the power the AVR5000 is able todeliver.

Description and FeaturesThe AVR5000 is among the most versatile andmulti-featured A/V receivers available, incorpo-rating a wide range of listening options. In addi-tion to Dolby Digital and DTS decoding for digi-tal sources, a broad choice of analog surroundmodes are available for use with sources such asCD, VCR, TV broadcasts and the AVR’s ownFM/AM tuner. Along with Dolby Pro Logic*,Dolby 3 Stereo, 5 Ch Stereo and custom Hall andTheater modes, only Harman Kardon receiversoffer Logic 7® to create a wider, more envelopingfield environment and more defined fly-oversand pans.

Finally, the AVR5000 is among the very few A/Vreceivers that offer decoding of MP3 data, sothat you may listen to the latest music selectionsdirectly from compatible computers or playbackdevices with the power and fidelity you expectfrom Harman Kardon.Another Harman Kardon exclusive is VMAx™,which uses proprietary processing to create anopen, spacious sound field even when only twofront speakers are available.The AVR 5000 is also able to offer HDCD®

decoding to provide the most realistic playbackof CDs when a digital connection is used, evenwith a normal non-HDCD-compatible CD or DVDplayer.

In addition to providing a wide range of listeningoptions, the AVR5000 is easy to configure sothat it provides the best results with your speak-ers and specific listening-room environment.On-screen menus make it simple to enter set-tings for speakers, inputs and delay times, whileour exclusive EzSet™ remote measures a sys-tem‘s sound levels and automatically calibratesthem for perfectly balanced soundfield presenta-tion.

For the ultimate in flexibility, the AVR5000 fea-tures connections for five video devices, all withboth composite and S-Video inputs. Two addi-tional audio inputs are available, and a total ofsix digital inputs make the AVR5000 capable ofhandling all the latest digital audio sources.For compatibility with the latest DVD players anddigital video products, the AVR5000 also fea-tures component video switching. Coax andoptical digital outputs are available for directconnection to digital recorders, and both thefront panel analog audio/video and the coaxialdigital jacks may be switched to an output foruse with portable recorders – a Harman Kardonexclusive. Two video recording outputs, preamp-out/main-in jacks, and a six channel input makethe AVR5000 virtually future-proof, with every-thing needed to accommodate tomorrow’s newformats right on board.

The AVR5000’s flexibility and power extendbeyond your main home theater or listeningroom. The AVR includes a sophisticated multi-zone control system that allows you to selectone source for use in the main room and a dif-ferent one in a second room. Left and right frontchannel audio is routed to the remote roomlocation, with complete control over volume pro-vided by a separate infrared control link. Tomake it easy to operate the AVR 5000 from aremote room, a separate Zone II remote isincluded.

Safety Information

Important Safety Information

Verify Line Voltage Before UseYour AVR5000 has been designed for use with220-240-Volt AC current. Connection to a linevoltage other than that for which it is intendedcan create a safety and fire hazard and maydamage the unit.

If you have any questions about the voltagerequirements for your specific model, or aboutthe line voltage in your area, contact your dealerbefore plugging the unit into a wall outlet.

Do Not Use Extension CordsTo avoid safety hazards, use only the power cordattached to your unit. We do not recommendthat extension cords be used with this product.As with all electrical devices, do not run powercords under rugs or carpets or place heavyobjects on them. Damaged power cords shouldbe replaced immediately by an authorizedservice depot with a cord meeting factoryspecifications.

Handle the AC Power Cord GentlyWhen disconnecting the power cord from an ACoutlet, always pull the plug, never pull the cord.If you do not intend to use the unit for any con-siderable length of time, disconnect the plugfrom the AC outlet.

Do Not Open the CabinetThere are no user-serviceable components insidethis product. Opening the cabinet may present ashock hazard, and any modification to theproduct will void your guarantee. If water or anymetal object such as a paper clip, wire or astaple accidentally falls inside the unit,disconnect it from the AC power sourceimmediately, and consult an authorized servicestation.

Installation Location■ To assure proper operation and to avoid the

potential for safety hazards, place the unit ona firm and level surface. When placing theunit on a shelf, be certain that the shelf andany mounting hardware can support theweight of the product.

■ Make certain that proper space is providedboth above and below the unit for ventilation.If this product will be installed in a cabinet orother enclosed area, make certain that thereis sufficient air movement within the cabinet.Under some circumstances a fan may berequired.

■ Do not place the unit directly on a carpetedsurface.

■ Avoid installation in extremely hot or coldlocations, or an area that is exposed to directsunlight or heating equipment.

■ Avoid moist or humid locations.

■ Do not obstruct the ventilation slots on thetop of the unit, or place objects directly overthem.

CleaningWhen the unit gets dirty, wipe it with a clean,soft, dry cloth. If necessary, wipe it with a softcloth dampened with mild soapy water, then afresh cloth with clean water. Wipe dryimmediately with a dry cloth. NEVER usebenzene, aerosol cleaners, thinner, alcohol or anyother volatile cleaning agent. Do not useabrasive cleaners, as they may damage the finishof metal parts. Avoid spraying insecticide nearthe unit.

Moving the UnitBefore moving the unit, be certain to disconnectany interconnection cords with othercomponents, and make certain that youdisconnect the unit from the AC outlet.

Unpacking

The carton and shipping materials used toprotect your new receiver during shipment werespecially designed to cushion it from shock andvibration. We suggest that you save the cartonand packing materials for use in shipping if youmove, or should the unit ever need repair.

To minimize the size of the carton in storage,you may wish to flatten it. This is done bycarefully slitting the tape seams on the bottomand collapsing the carton. Other cardboardinserts may be stored in the same manner.Packing materials that cannot be collapsedshould be saved along with the carton in aplastic bag.

If you do not wish to save the packagingmaterials, please note that the carton and othersections of the shipping protection arerecyclable. Please respect the environment anddiscard those materials at a local recyclingcenter.

1 Main Power Switch: Press this button toapply power to the AVR5000. When the switchis pressed in, the unit is placed in a Standbymode, as indicated by the amber LED 3 sur-rounding the System Power Control 2. Thisbutton MUST be pressed in to operate the unit.To turn the unit off completely and prevent theuse of the remote control, this switch should bepressed until it pops out from the front panelso that the word “OFF” may be read at the topof the switch.

NOTE: This switch is normally left in the “ON”position.

2 System Power Control: When the MainPower Switch 1 is “ON,” press this button toturn on the AVR5000; press it again to turn theunit off (to Standby). Note that the PowerIndicator surrounding the switch 3 will turngreen when the unit is on.

3 Power Indicator: This LED will be illumi-nated in amber when the unit is in the Standbymode to signal that the unit is ready to beturned on. When the unit is in operation, theindicator will turn green.

4 Headphone Jack: This jack may be used tolisten to the AVR5000’s output through a pair ofheadphones. Be certain that the headphoneshave a standard 6.3 mm stereo phone plug.Note that the main room speakers and allPreamp Outputs � will automatically be turnedoff when the headphone jack is in use.

5 Selector Buttons: When you are establish-ing the AVR5000’s configuration settings, use thesebuttons to select from the choices available, asshown in the Main Information Display Û.

6 Tone Mode: Pressing this button enables ordisables the Balance, Bass and Treble tone con-trols. When the button is pressed so that thewords TONE IN appear in the MainInformation Display Û, the settings of theBass & and Treble ( controls and of theBalance control * will affect the output sig-nals. When the button is pressed so that thewords TONE OUT appear in the MainInformation Display Û, the output signalwill be “flat,” without any balance, bass or treblealteration.

7 Surround Mode Selector: Press this but-ton to change the surround mode by scrollingthrough the list of available modes. Note thatDolby Digital and DTS modes can be selectedonly when a digital input is used (See page 28for more information about surround modes.)

8 Tuning Selector: Press the left side of thebutton to tune lower frequency stations and theright side of the button to tune higher frequencystations. When a station with a strong signal isreached, the TUNED indicator W will illuminatein the Main Information Display Û (seepage 33 for more information on tuning sta-tions).

9 Tuner Band Selector: Pressing this buttonwill automatically switch the AVR to the Tunermode. Pressing it again will switch between theAM and FM frequency bands, holding it pressedfor some seconds will switch between stereoand mono receiving and between automatic andmanual tuning mode (See page 33 for moreinformation on the tuner).

) Preset Stations Selector: Press this but-ton to scroll up or down through the list of sta-tions that have been entered into the presetmemory. (See page 33 for more information ontuner programming.)

! Input Source Selector: Press this buttonto change the input by scrolling through the listof input sources.

@ RDS Select Button: Press this button to dis-play the various messages that are part of theRDS data system of the AVR5000’s tuner. (Seepage 34 for more information on RDS).

# Digital Optical 3 Input: Connect the opti-cal digital audio output of an audio or video prod-uct to this jack. When the Input is not in use, becertain to keep the plastic cap installed to avoiddust contamination that might degrade future performance.

$ Input/Output Status Indicators: TheseLED indicators will normally light green to showthat the front panel Video 4 A/V jacks or theCoaxial 3 digital jack is operating as an input.When either of these jacks has been configuredfor use as an output, the indicator will turn redto show that the jack may be used for recording.(See page 21 for more information on configur-ing the front panel jacks as outputs, rather thaninputs.)

% Digital Coax 3 Jack: This jack is normallyused for connection to the output of portableaudio devices, video game consoles or otherproducts that have a coax digital jack. It mayalso be configured as an output jack, to feed adigital signal to a CD-R, MiniDisc or other digitalrecording device. (See page 21 for informationon configuring the Digital Coax 3 Jack to an out-put.)

^ Video 4 Jacks: These audio/video jacksmay be used for temporary connection to videogames or portable audio/video products such ascamcorders and portable audio players. Theymay also be configured as output jacks to feed asignal to any recording Audio or Video device(see page 21 for more information).

& Bass Control: Turn this control to modify thelow frequency output of the left/right channels byas much as ±10dB. Set this control to a suitableposition for your taste or room acoustics.

* Balance Control: Turn this control tochange the relative volume for the frontleft/right channels.

NOTE: For proper operation of the surroundmodes this control should be at the midpoint or“12 o’clock” position.

( Treble Control: Turn this control to modifythe high frequency output of the left/right chan-nels by as much as ±10dB. Set this control to asuitable position for your taste or room acoustics.

Ó Volume Control: Turn this knob clockwiseto increase the volume, counterclockwise todecrease the volume. If the AVR is muted,adjusting volume control will automaticallyrelease the unit from the silenced condition.

Ô Set Button: When making choices duringthe setup and configuration process, press thisbutton to enter the desired setting as shown inthe Main Information Display Û into theAVR5000’s memory. The set button may also beused to change the display brightness.(See page 36.)

Input indicators: A green LED will light infront of the input that is currently being used asthe source for the AVR5000.

Ò Delay: Press this button to begin thesequence of steps required to enter delay timesettings. (See pages 23 for more information ondelay times.)

Ú Digital Input Selector: When playing asource that has a digital output, press thisbutton to select between the Optical #�and Coaxial %� Digital inputs. (See pages 29-31 for more information on digital audio.)

Û Main Information Display: This displaydelivers messages and status indications to helpyou operate the receiver. (See pages 7–8 for acomplete explanation of the InformationDisplay.)

Ù Channel Select Button: Press this buttonto begin the process of trimming the channeloutput levels using an external audio source.(For more information on output level trimadjustment, see page 32.)

ı Speaker Select Button: Press this buttonto begin the process of selecting the speakerpositions that are used in your listening room.(See page 22 for more information on setup andconfiguration.)

ˆ Test Tone Selector: Press this button tobegin the process of adjusting the channel out-put levels using the internal test tone as a refer-ence. (For more information on output leveladjustment, see page 26.)

˜ Surround Mode Indicators: A green LEDwill light in front of the surround mode that iscurrently in use.

¯ Remote Sensor Window: The sensorbehind this window receives infrared signalsfrom the remote control. Aim the remote at thisarea and do not block or cover it unless anexternal remote sensor is installed.

F Dolby Pro Logic Indicator: This indicatorlights when the Dolby ProLogic mode has beenselected.

G Analog Input Indicator: This indicatorlights when an analog input source has beenselected.

H Dolby 3 Stereo Indicator: This indicatorlights when the Dolby 3 Stereo Mode has beenselected.

I VMAx Mode Indicator: This indicator illu-minates to show that the VMAx mode is in use.VMAx F appears when the Far Field VMAxmode is selected;VMAx N appears when theNear Field VMAx mode is selected. (See page 28for a description of the VMAx Modes.)

J 5 Channel Stereo Indicator: This indica-tor lights when the 5 Channel Stereo mode hasbeen selected.

K Logic 7 Mode Indicators: These indicatorsilluminate when the Logic 7 mode is in use.LOGIC 7C appears for the Cinema versionof Logic 7,LOGIC 7M appears for theMusic version of Logic 7. (See page 28 for adescription of the Logic 7 Modes.)

L Hall Mode Indicators: These indicatorslight when one of the Hall modes has beenselected.

M OSD Indicator: When the OSD system is inuse, this indicator lights to remind you that theother indicators in this display do not functionwhen the On Screen Display is being used.

N Theater Mode Indicator: This indicator illu-minates to show that the Theater mode is in use.

O Night Mode Indicator: This indicatorlights when the AVR5000 is in the Night mode,which preserves the dynamic range of digitalprogram material at low volume levels.

P Multiroom Indicator: This indicator lightswhen the multiroom system is active. Note thatit will remain lit when the multiroom system is inuse even though the main room system is in theStandby mode and all other indicators are dark.(See page 38 for more information on theMultiroom system.)

Q Speaker/Channel Input Indicators: Theseindicators are multipurpose, indicating either thespeaker type selected for each channel or theincoming data-signal configuration. The left, cen-ter, right, right surround and left surround speakerindicators are composed of three boxes, while thesubwoofer is a single box. The center box lightswhen a “Small” speaker is selected, and the twoouter boxes light when “Large” speakers areselected. When none of the boxes are lit for thecenter, surround or subwoofer channels, nospeaker has been selected for that position. (Seepage 22 for more information on configuringspeakers.) The letters inside each of the centerboxes display active input channels. For standardanalog inputs, only the L and R will light, indicat-ing a stereo input. When a digital source is play-ing, the indicators will light to display the chan-nels begin received at the digital input. When theletters flash, the digital input has been interrupt-ed. (See page 31 for more information on theChannel Indicators).

Front Panel Information Display

T Sleep Indicator: This indicator lights whenthe Sleep function is in use. The numbers in thePreset/Sleep Number Indicators will show theminutes remaining before the AVR5000 goesinto the Standby mode. (See page 27 for moreinformation on the Sleep function.)

U Memory Indicator: This indicator flasheswhen entering presets and other informationinto the tuner’s memory.

V Stereo Indicator: This indicator illuminateswhen an FM station is being tuned in stereo.

W Tuned Indicator: This indicator illuminateswhen a station is being received with sufficient sig-nal strength to provide acceptable listening quality.

Video Monitor Outputs: Connect thesejacks to the composite and/or S-Video input of aTV monitor or video projector to view the on-screen menus and the output of any video sourceselected by the receiver’s video switcher.

� Amplifier Inputs: When the jumper pinsthat link the Preamp Outputs � with theseinputs are removed, these jacks may be used toconnect any external 5.1 channel source (or 2channel source, if only Main Inputs are used),e.g. processors, to the internal amplifiers. (Seepage 18 for more information on using theseconnections.)

� Speaker Outputs: Connect these outputsto the matching + or – terminals on your speak-ers. When making speaker connections alwaysmake certain to maintain correct polarity by con-necting the red (+) terminals on the AVR5000 tothe red (+) terminals on the speakers and theblack (–) terminals on the AVR5000 to the black(–) terminals on the speakers. See page 15 formore information on speaker polarity.

� Switched AC Accessory Outlet: This out-let may be used to power any device that youwish to have turn on when the unit is turned onwith the System Power Control switch 2.

� Unswitched AC Accessory Outlet: Thisoutlet may be used to power any AC device. Thepower will remain on at this outlet regardless ofwhether the AVR5000 is on or off (in Standby),provided that the Main Power switch 1 is on.

Note: The total power consumption of alldevices connected to the accessory outletsshould not exceed 100 watts from theUnswitched Outlet � and 50 W from theSwitched Outlet �.

AC Power Cord: Connect the AC plug to anunswitched AC wall output.

� Remote IR Output: This connection per-mits the IR sensor in the receiver to serve otherremote controlled devices. Connect this jack tothe “IR IN” jack on Harman Kardon or othercompatible equipment.

� Remote IR Input: If the AVR5000’s front-panel IR sensor is blocked due to cabinet doorsor other obstructions, an external IR sensormay be used. Connect the output of the sensorto this jack.

% Multiroom IR Input: Connect the output ofan IR sensor in a remote room to this jack tooperate the AVR5000’s multiroom control system.

� DVD Video Inputs: Connect these jacks tothe composite or S-Video output jacks on a DVDplayer or other video source.

Main Remote Control Functions

IMPORTANT NOTE: The AVR5000’s remote maybe programmed to control up to seven devices,including the AVR5000. Before using the remote,it is important to remember to press the InputSelector button 4 that corresponds to theunit you wish to operate. In addition, theAVR5000’s remote is shipped from the factory tooperate the AVR5000 and most Harman KardonCD or DVD players and cassette decks. Theremote is also capable of operating a wide vari-ety of other products using the control codes thatare part of the remote or by learning commandsfrom other remotes. Before using the remote withother products, follow the instructions on pages39 to program the proper codes for the productsin your system.

It is also important to remember that many of thebuttons on the remote take on different func-tions, depending on the product selected usingthe Input Selectors. The descriptions shown hereprimarily detail the functions of the remote whenit is used to operate the AVR5000. (See page 44for information about alternate functions for theremote’s buttons.)

0 Power On Button: Press this button toturn on the power to a device selected by pressingone of the Input Selectors 4 (except Tape).

1 IR Transmitter Window: Point this windowtowards the AVR5000 when pressing buttons onthe remote to make certain that infrared com-mands are properly received.

2 Program/SPL Indicator: This three-colorindicator is used to guide you through theprocess of programming the remote or learningcommands from a remote into the AVR 5000’sremote code memory and it is also used as alevel indicator when using the remote’s EzSetcapabilities. (See page 24 for more informationon setting output levels, and see page 39 forinformation on programming the remote.)

3 Power Off Button: Press this button toplace the AVR5000 or a selected device unit inthe Standby mode. Note that when the AVR5000is switched off this will turn off the main roomfunctions, but if the Multiroom system is activat-ed, it will continue to function.

4 Input Selectors: Pressing one of thesebuttons will perform three actions at the sametime. First, if the AVR is not turned on, this willpower up the unit. Next, it will select the sourceshown on the button as the input to the AVR.Finally, it will change the remote control so thatit controls the device selected. After pressing oneof these buttons you must press the AVRSelector button 5 again to operate theAVR’s functions with the remote.

5 AVR Selector: Pressing this button willswitch the remote so that it will operate the AVR’sfunctions. If the AVR is in the Standby mode, it willalso turn the AVR on.

6 AM/FM Tuner Select: Press this button toselect the AVR’s tuner as the listening choice.Pressing this button when the tuner is in use willselect between the AM and FM bands.

7 Learn Button: Press this button to beginthe process of “learning” the codes from anotherproduct’s remote into the AVR5000’s remote. (Seepage 40 for more information on using theremote’s learning function.)

8 Test Tone: Press this button to begin thesequence used to calibrate the AVR5000’s outputlevels. (See page 24 for more information on calibrating the AVR5000.)

9 Sleep Button: Press this button to placethe unit in the Sleep mode. After the time shownin the display, the AVR5000 will automaticallygo into the Standby mode. Each press of thebutton changes the time until turn-off in the fol-lowing order:

Hold the button pressed for two seconds to turnoff the Sleep mode setting.Note that this button is also used to changechannels on your TV, VCR and SAT receiver whenselected.

A Surround Mode Selector: Press this but-ton to begin the process of changing the sur-round mode. After the button has been pressed,use the ⁄/¤ buttons D to select the desiredsurround mode (See page 29 for more informa-tion). Note that this button is also used to tunechannels when the TV, VCR and SAT receiver isselected using the Input Selector 4.

B Night Mode: Press this button to activatethe Night mode. This mode is available only withDolby Digital encoded digital sources, and it pre-serves dialog (center channel) intelligibilty at lowvolume levels (See page 31 for more informa-tion).

C Channel Select Button: This button isused to start the process of setting theAVR5000’s output levels with an externalsource. Once this button is pressed, use the⁄/¤ buttons D to select the channel beingadjusted, then press the Set button F, fol-lowed by the ⁄/¤ buttons again, to change thelevel setting. (See page 32 for more informa-tion.)

D ⁄/¤ Buttons: These are multi-purposebuttons. They will be used most frequently toselect a surround mode. To change the surroundmode, first press the SURR/CH ¤ button A.Next press these buttons to scroll up or downthrough the list of surround modes that appearin the Main Information Display Û. Thesebuttons are also used to increase or decreaseoutput levels when configuring the unit witheither the internal test tone or an externalsource. They are also used to enter delay timesettings after the Delay button has beenpressed.

When the AVR5000 remote is being programmedfor the codes of another device, these buttons arealso used in the “Auto Search” process (See page39 for more information on programming theremote.)

E ‹ Button: This button is used to changethe menu selection or setting during some of thesetup procedures for the AVR.

F Set Button: This button is used to entersettings into the AVR5000’s memory. It is alsoused in the setup procedures for delay time,speaker configuration and channel output leveladjustment.

G Digital Select: Press this button to assignone of the digital inputs ��#% to asource. (See page 30 for more information onusing digital inputs.)

H Numeric Keys: These buttons serve as aten-button numeric keypad to enter tuner presetpositions. They are also used to select channelnumbers when TV, VCR or Sat receiver hasbeen selected on the remote, or to select tracknumbers on a CD, DVD or LD player, dependingon how the remote has been programmed.

I Tuner Mode: Press this button when thetuner is in use to select between automatic tun-ing and manual tuning. When the button ispressed so that the AUTO indicator X goesout, pressing the Tuning buttons K8≠

will move the frequency up or down in single-step increments. When the FM band is in useand the AUTO indicator X is on, pressing thisbutton will change to monaural reception mak-ing even week stations audible. (See page 33 formore information.)

J Direct Button: Press this button when thetuner is in use to start the sequence for directentry of a station’s frequency. After pressing thebutton simply press the proper Numeric KeysH to select a station (See page 33 for moreinformation on the tuner).

K Tuning Up/Down: When the tuner is inuse, these buttons will tune up or down throughthe selected frequency band. If the Tuner Modebutton I has been pressed or the Band but-ton @ on the front panel was held pressed sothat the AUTO indicator X is illuminated,pressing either of the buttons will cause thetuner to seek the next station with acceptablesignal strength for quality reception. When theAUTO indicator X is NOT illuminated, pressingthese buttons will tune stations in single-stepincrements. (See page 33 for more information.)

L OSD Button: Press this button to activatethe On Screen Display (OSD) system used to setup or adjust the AVR5000’s parameters.

M Macro Buttons: Press these buttons to store or recall a “Macro”, which is a pre-programmed sequence of commands stored in the remote. (See page 41 for moreinformation on storing and recalling macros.)

N Transport Buttons: These buttons do nothave any functions for the AVR, but they may beprogrammed for the forward/reverse play opera-tion of a wide variety of CD or DVD players, andaudio or video- cassette recorders. (See page 39for more information on programming theremote.)

O Skip Up/Down Buttons: These buttonsdo not have a direct function with the AVR5000,but when used with a compatibly programmedCD or DVD player/changer they will change thetracks on the disc currently being played.

P RDS Select Button: Press this button todisplay the various messages that are part of theRDS data system of the AVR5000’s tuner. (Seepage 34 for more information on RDS).

Q Preset Up/Down: When the tuner is inuse, press these buttons to scroll through thestations programmed into the AVR5000’s memo-ry. When CD or DVD is selected using the InputSelector button 4, these buttons may func-tion as Slow Fwd/Rev (DVD) or ”+10” (CD).

� Clear Button: Press this button to clearincorrect entries when using the remote to directly enter a radio station’s frequency.

� Memory Button: Press this button to entera radio station into the AVR5000’s preset memory.After pressing the button the MEMORY indicatorU will flash; you then have five seconds toenter a preset memory location using theNumeric Keys H. (See page 33 for moreinformation.)

Delay/Prev Ch.: Press this button to beginthe process for setting the delay times used bythe AVR5000 when processing surround sound.After pressing this button, the delay times areentered by pressing the Set button F andthen using the ⁄/¤ buttons D to change thesetting. Press the Set button again to completethe process. (See page 23 for more information.)

! › Button: Press this button to change a set-ting or selection when configuring many of theAVR’s settings.

" Speaker Select: Press this button tobegin the process of configuring the AVR5000’sBass Management System for use with the typeof speakers used in your system. Once the but-ton has been pressed, use the ⁄/¤ buttonsD to select the channel you wish to set up.Press the Set button F and then select thespeaker type (see page 22 for more informa-tion.)

# Multi-Room: Press this button to activatethe Multiroom system or to begin the process ofchanging the input or volume level for the sec-ond zone. (See page 38 for more information onthe Multiroom system.)

$Volume Up/Down: Press these buttons toraise or lower the system volume.

% TV/Video Button: This button does nothave a direct function on the AVR 5000, butwhen used with a compatibly programmed VCR,DVD or satellite receiver that has a “TV/Video”function, pressing this button will switchbetween the output of the player or receiver andthe external video input to that player. Consultthe Owner’s Manual for your specific player orreceiver for the details of how it implements thisfunction.

& SPL Indicator Select: This button acti-vates the AVR5000’s EzSet function to quicklyand accurately calibrate the AVR 5000’s outputlevels. Press and hold the button for three sec-onds and then release it. Note that the Test Tonewill begin circulating, and the ProgramIndicator 2 will change colors. During thissequence, EzSet will automatically adjust theoutput levels for all channels until they areequal, as shown by the Program Indicatorlighting green for each channel. (See page 25for more information on EzSet.)

' 6-Ch. Direct Input: Press this button toselect the component connected to the 6-Ch.Direct Input � as the source

� Mute: Press this button to momentarilysilence the AVR5000 or TV set being controlled,depending on which device has been selected.

When the AVR5000 remote is being programmedto operate another device, this button is pressedwith the Input Selector button 4 to beginthe programming process. (See page 39 for moreinformation on programming the remote.)

( EzSet Sensor Microphone: The sensormicrophone for the EzSet microphone is behindthese slots. When using the remote to calibratespeaker output levels using EzSet, be sure thatyou do not hold the remote in a way that coversthese slots. (See page 25 for more informationon using EzSet).

) Light Button: Press this button to activatethe remote’s built-in backlight for better legibilityof the buttons in a darkened room.

After unpacking the unit, and placing it on a solidsurface capable of supporting its weight, you willneed to make the connections to your audio andvideo equipment.

Audio Equipment Connections

We recommend that you use high-quality inter-connect cables when making connections tosource equipment and recorders to preserve theintegrity of the signals.

When making connections to audio sourceequipment or speakers it is always a good prac-tice to unplug the unit from the AC wall outlet.This prevents any possibility of accidentally send-ing audio or transient signals to the speakersthat may damage them.

1. Connect the analog output of a CD player tothe CD inputs �.

NOTE: When the CD player has both fixed andvariable audio outputs it is best to use the fixedoutput unless you find that the input to thereceiver is so low that the sound is noisy, or sohigh that the signal is distorted.

2. Connect the analog Play/Out jacks of a cas-sette deck, MD, CD-R or other audio recorder tothe Tape Input jacks �. Connect the analogRecord/In jacks on the recorder to the TapeOutput jacks � on the AVR5000.

3. Connect the output of any digital sources tothe appropriate input connections on theAVR5000 front or rear panel. Note that theOptical and Coaxial digital inputs��#% may be used with a Dolby Digitalor DTS source or the output of a conventionalCD, MD or LD player’s PCM (S/P-DIF) output.

4. Connect the Coaxial or Optical DigitalOutputs $ on the rear panel of the AVR to thematching digital input connections on a CD-R orMiniDisc recorder.

5. Assemble the AM Loop Antenna supplied withthe unit as shown below. Connect it to the AMand GND screw terminals �.

6. Connect the supplied FM antenna to the FM(75 ohm) connection �. The FM antenna maybe an external roof antenna, an inside poweredor wire lead antenna or a connection from acable system. Note that if the antenna or con-nection uses 300-ohm twin-lead cable, you mustuse a 300-ohm-to-75-ohm adapter to make theconnection.

7. Connect the front, center and surround speak-er outputs � to the respective speakers.

To assure that all the audio signals are carried toyour speakers without loss of clarity or resolu-tion, we suggest that you use high-qualityspeaker cable. Many brands of cable are avail-able and the choice of cable may be influencedby the distance between your speakers and thereceiver, the type of speakers you use, personalpreferences and other factors. Your dealer orinstaller is a valuable resource to consult inselecting the proper cable.

Regardless of the brand of cable selected, werecommend that you use a cable constructed offine, multistrand copper with an area greaterthan 2 mm2.

Cable with an area of 1.5 mm2 may be used forshort runs of less than 4 m. We do not recom-mend that you use cables with an area less than1mm2 due to the power loss and degradation inperformance that will occur.

Cables that are run inside walls should have theappropriate markings to indicate listing with UL,CSA or other appropriate testing agency stan-dards. Questions about running cables insidewalls should be referred to your installer or alicensed electrical contractor who is familiar withthe applicable local building codes in your area.

When connecting wires to the speakers, be cer-tain to observe proper polarity. Remember toconnect the “negative” or “black” wire to thesame terminal on both the receiver and thespeaker. Similarly, the “positive” or “red” wireshould be connected to like terminals on theAVR5000 and speaker.

NOTE: While most speaker manufacturersadhere to an industry convention of using blackterminals for negative and red ones for positive,some manufacturers may vary from this configu-ration. To assure proper phase and optimal per-formance, consult the identification plate onyour speaker or the speaker’s manual to verifypolarity. If you do not know the polarity of yourspeaker, ask your dealer for advice before pro-ceeding, or consult the speaker’s manufacturer.

We also recommend that the length of cableused to connect speaker pairs be identical. Forexample, use the same length piece of cable toconnect the front-left and front-right or sur-round-left and surround-right speakers, even ifthe speakers are a different distance from theAVR5000.

8. Connections to a subwoofer are normallymade via a line level audio connection from theSubwoofer Output to the line-level inputof a subwoofer with a built-in amplifier. When apassive subwoofer is used, the connection firstgoes to a power amplifier, which will be con-

nected to one or more subwoofer speakers. Ifyou are using a powered subwoofer that doesnot have line-level input connections, follow theinstructions furnished with the speaker for con-nection information.

Note: Speaker sets with two front satellites anda passive subwoofer must be connected to thefront speaker outputs � only rather than to theSubwoofer Output .

Video Equipment Connections

Video equipment is connected in the same man-ner as audio components. Again, the use of high-quality interconnect cables is recommended topreserve signal quality. To ensure best video per-formance S-Video sources should be connectedto the AVR5000 only with their S-Video In/Outputs, not with their composite video connec-tors too.

1. Connect a VCR’s audio and video Play/Outjacks to the Video 1 or Video 2 In jacks���" on the rear panel. The Audio andVideo Record/In jacks on the VCR should be con-nected to the Video 1 or Video 2 Out jacks���! on the AVR5000.

2. Connect the analog audio and video outputsof a satellite receiver, cable TV converter or tele-vision set or any other video source to theVideo 2 �" (if not in use) or Video 3 �#jacks.

3. Connect the analog audio and video outputsof a DVD or laser disc player to the DVD jacks��.

4. Connect the digital audio outputs of a CD,MD or DVD player, satellite receiver, cable box orHDTV converter to the appropriate Optical orCoaxial Digital Inputs ��#%.

5. Connect the Video Monitor Out jacks onthe receiver to the composite and S-Video inputof your television monitor or video projector.

6. If your DVD player and monitor both havecomponent video connections, connect the com-ponent outputs of the DVD player to the DVDComponent Video Inputs �. Note that evenwhen component video connections are usedthe audio connections must still be made toeither the analog DVD Audio Inputs � or anyof the Coaxial or Optical Digital Input jacks��.

7. If another component video device is avail-able, connect it to the Video 2 ComponentVideo Input jacks �. The audio connectionsfor this device should be made to either theVideo 2 Input jacks " or any of the Coaxialor Optical Digital Input jacks ��.

SCART A/V Connections

For the connections described above your videodevice needs RCA (cinch) connectors or/and S-Video connectors for all Audio and Video signals:Any normal video device (Not SVHS or High 8)for only playback needs 3 RCA jacks, VCRs forrecord and playback even 6 RCA jacks. Any S-Video device (SVHS, High 8) needs 2 RCA(Audio) and 1 S-Video jack (Video), if it´s aplayback unit, or 4 RCA (Audio In/Out) and 2 S-Video (Video In/Out) jacks, if it´s a recordingVCR.

Many european video devices are equipped withRCA (Cinch) or S-Video jacks only partially, notfor all audio and video in/outputs needed asdescribed above, but with a so called Scart orEuro-AV connector (almost rectangular jack with21 pins, see drawings on next page).

In that case the following Scart to Cinchadapters or cables are needed:

• Units for playback, such as satellite receivers,camcorders, DVD or LD players, need anadapter from Scart to 3 RCA plugs, see fig. 1(normal video devices) or from Scart to 2RCA+1 S-Video plugs, see fig. 4 (S-Videodevices).

• HiFi VCRs need an adapter from Scart to 6RCA plugs, see fig. 2 (normal video), or fromScart to 4 Audio+2S-Video jacks, see fig. 5 (S-Video VCR). Read carefully the instructionattached to the adapter to find which of thesix plugs is used for the record signal to theVCR (connect with the AVR´s Out jacks) andfor the playback signal from the VCR (connectwith the AVR´s In jacks). Do not misconnectAudio and Video signals. Don´t hesitate toconsult your dealer, if you are uncertain.

• If you use only normal video devices the TVmonitor needs an adapter from 3 RCA plugsto Scart (fig. 3) only. If also S-Video devices areused an adapter from 2 RCA+1S-Video plugsto Scart is needed additionally (fig. 6),connected to the SCART input on your TV thatis provided for S-Video.

Note that only the video plugs (the "yellow"cinch plug in fig. 3 and the S-Video plug in fig.6) must be connected to the TV MonitorOutput , and the volume on the TV must bereduced to minimum.

Important Note for Adapter Cables:If the cinch connectors of the adapter you’ll useare labeled, connect the Audio and Video ”In”plugs with the corresponding Audio and Video”In” jacks on the AVR5000 (and with a VCRconnect the ”Out” plugs to the ”Out” jacks onthe AVR). Note that with some adapter types itmay be just turned around: If no signal is audi-ble/ visible when the VCR is playing connect the“Out” plugs to the ”In” jacks on the AVR andturned around. If the adapter plugs are notlabeled in that way, pay attention to the signalflow directions as shown in the diagrams aboveand in the instruction attached to the adapter. Ifuncertain, don’t hesitate to consult your dealer.

Important Notes for S-Video connections:1. Only the S-Video In/Out of S-Video devicesmust be connected to the AVR, NOT both, nor-mal video and S-Video In/Outputs (except the TV,see item below).

2. Like most common AV units the AVR5000does not convert the Video signal to S-Video orvice versa. Thus both connections must be madefrom the AVR5000 to the TV if both, Video and S-Video sources, are used, and the appropriateinput on the TV must be selected.

8. If the component video inputs are used, con-nect the Component Video Output � to thecomponent video inputs of your TV, projector ordisplay device.

Video Connection Notes:• Y/Pr/Pb Component, S-Video or Composite

video signals may only be viewed in theirnative formats and will not be converted tothe other formats. But the OSD can be viewedon the TV screen in any case, with Video or S-Video input selected on the TV.

• When the component video jacks are used,the on-screen menus will not be visible. Youmust switch to the standard composite or S-Video input on your TV to view those menus.

• The AVR 5000’s component video system isdesigned for standard video rate video fromDVD players and similar devices. While it mayoperate with high definition signals, the videoquality may be slightly less than with a directconnection between the DVD and your TV.

• All component inputs/outputs can be used forRGB signals too, in the same way as describedfor the Y/Pr/Pb signals, then connected to thejacks with the corresponding color.But this is only true as long as only the threeRGB lines are used and not any sync signal isoutput separately from the source.

Important Note for the Use of SCART-Cinch Adapters:When video sources are connected to the TVdirectly with a SCART cable, specific control sig-nals apart from Audio/Video signals will be fedto the TV. These specific signals are: With allvideo sources, the signal for automatic inputselection that switches the TV automatically tothe appropriate input as soon as the videosource is started. And with DVD players, the sig-nals automatically turning the TV to 16:9 format(with switchable 4:3 TVs) and turning the RGBvideo decoder of the TV on or off, depending onthe DVD player´s setting. With any adapter cable,these control signals will be lost and the appro-priate setting of the TV must be made manually.

Note for RGB signal with SCART:If you use a unit providing RGB signals on aSCART output (as e.g. most DVD players do) andyou want to use that RGB signal, this SCARToutput must be connected directly to your TV.Although the AVR 5000 RDS can switch three-way video signals (like component signalsY/Pb/Pr), most TVs need separate sync signalsfor RGB (also with SCART) that cannot beswitched and provided by the AVR 5000.RGB signals can be pathed through the AVR5000 only when no separate sync signal is needed (see 4th ”Video ConnectionNote” on page 16).

System and Power Connections

The AVR5000 is designed for flexible use withmultiroom systems, external control componentsand power amplifiers.

Main Room Remote Control ExtensionIf the receiver is placed behind a solid or smokedglass cabinet door, the obstruction may preventthe remote sensor from receiving commands. Inthis event, the remote sensor of any HarmanKardon or other compatible device, not coveredby the door, or an optional remote sensor maybe used. Connect the Remote IR Output ofthat device or the output of the remote sensor tothe Remote IR Input jack �.

If other components are also prevented fromreceiving remote commands, only one sensor isneeded. Simply use this unit’s sensor or a remoteeye by running a connection from the RemoteIR Output jack � to the Remote IR Inputjack on Harman Kardon or other compatibleequipment.

NOTE: All remotely controlled components mustbe linked together in a daisy chain. Connect theIR OUT jack of one unit to the IR IN of the nextto establish this chain.

Multiroom IR LinkThe key to remote room operation is to link theremote room to the AVR5000’s location withwire for an infrared receiver and speakers or anamplifier. The remote room IR receiver (this can bean optional IR receiver or any other remotableHarman Kardon device in the remote room withIR sensor integrated) should be connected to theAVR5000 via standard coaxial cable. Connect theRemote IR Output of the device or of theoptional sensor with the Multiroom IR Inputjack % on the AVR5000’s rear panel.

If other Harman Kardon compatible sourceequipment is part of the main room installation,the Remote IR Output jack � on the rearpanel should be connected to the IR IN jack onthat source device. This will enable the remoteroom location to control source equipment func-tions.

Multiroom Audio ConnectionsDepending on the distance from the AVR5000to the remote room, two options (A and B) areavailable for audio connection:

Option 1: Use high-quality, shielded stereoaudio interconnect cable with phono plugs onboth ends from the AVR5000’s location to theremote room. At the remote room, connect theinterconnect cable to a stereo power amplifier.The amplifier will be connected to the room’sspeakers. No volume control is required, as theAVR5000 and the remote IR link will providethat function. At the AVR5000, plug the audiointerconnect cables into the Multi-RoomOutput jacks on the AVR5000’s rear panel.

Option 2: Place the amplifier that will providepower to the remote location speakers in thesame room as the AVR5000, and connect theMultiroom Output jacks on the rear panelof the AVR to the audio input of the remoteroom amplifier. Use the appropriate speaker wireto connect the optional power amplifier to theremote speakers. High-quality wire of at least 2.5 mm2 is recommended for long multiroomconnections.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Any cables run inside wallsshould carry any certification that is required bythe local building and electrical codes. To avoidinterference, audio and speaker cables should notbe parallel to, or run in the same conduits or pathwith, AC cables. If you have any questions aboutmultiroom wiring, consult your dealer, custominstaller or low-voltage electrical contractor.

External Audio Power AmplifierConnectionsIf desired, the AVR 5000 may be connected tooptional, external audio power amplifiers orused with equalizers or speaker systems thatrequire connection between the preamp andamplifier sections of a receiver.

To make these connections, remove the jumpersthat connect the Preamp Out jacks � andAmplifier In jacks � for the channels to beused with external devices. Store the jumpers ina safe place so that the AVR may be used in itsnormal mode at a future date, if desired.

When an external amplifier is used, connect thePreamp Out jacks � to the inputs on theamplifier. When an equalizer or speaker proces-sor is used, connect the Preamp Out jacks �to the inputs of the processor, and connect theoutputs of the processor back to the AmplifierIn jacks � on the AVR. Note that when externalamplifiers or devices are used, volume is stillcontrolled by the AVR, although additional vol-ume controls on the external device may affectvolume and output levels from the AVR.

External Audio Decoder ConnectionTo provide for ultimate flexibility, the AVR5000may be used in conjunction with optional, exter-nal decoders for digital audio systems other thanthe AVR5000’s own built-in Dolby Digital andDTS decoding system or with DVD players hav-ing those decoders integrated. If an externaldecoder is used, connect the output jacks of thedecoder to the 6-Channel Direct inputs �,making sure to match channels.

These jacks may also be used for connections todevices such as DVD players or High DefinitionTelevision (HDTV) sets or decoders that featurebuilt-in digital surround decoders.Although thedigital decoding system in the AVR5000 will typi-cally provide audio performance that is superior toother decoders, you may use these jacks to providean additional 6-channel input for connection to aDVD player or HDTV set with a built-in decoderand discrete 6-channel analog outputs.

AC Power ConnectionsThis unit is equipped with two accessory AC out-lets. They may be used to power accessorydevices, but they should not be used with high-current draw equipment such as power ampli-fiers. The total power draw to the UnswitchedOutlet � must not exceed 100 watts, that tothe Switched Outlet � 50 watts.

The Switched � outlet will receive power onlywhen the unit is on completely. This is recom-mended for devices that have no power switchor a mechanical power switch that may be left inthe “ON” position.

NOTE: Many audio and video products go into aStandby mode when they are used withswitched outlets, and cannot be fully turned onusing the outlet alone without a remote controlcommand.

The Unswitched � outlet will receive poweras long as the unit is plugged into a powered ACoutlet and the Main Power Switch 1 is on.

Finally, when all connections are complete, plugthe power cord into a nonswitched 220-240-voltAC wall outlet. You’re almost ready to enjoy theAVR5000!

System Configuration

When all audio, video and system connectionshave been made, there are a few configurationadjustments that must be made. A few minutesspent to correctly configure and calibrate theunit will greatly add to your listening experience.

Speaker Selection

No matter which type or brand of speakers isused, the same model or brand of speakershould be used for the front-left, center andfront-right speakers. This creates a seamlessfront soundstage and eliminates the possibilityof distracting sonic disturbances that occur whena sound moves across mismatched front-channelspeakers.

Speaker Placement

The placement of speakers in a multichannelhome-theater system can have a noticeableimpact on the quality of sound reproduced.

Depending on the type of center-channelspeaker in use and your viewing device, placethe center speaker either directly above or belowyour TV, or in the center behind a perforatedfront-projection screen.

Once the center-channel speaker is installed,position the left-front and right-front speakers sothat they are as far away from one another asthe center-channel speaker is from the preferredlistening position. Ideally, the front-channelspeakers should be placed so that their tweetersare no more than 60cm above or below thetweeter in the center-channel speaker.

They should also be at least 0.5 meter from yourTV set unless the speakers are magneticallyshielded to avoid colourings on the TV screen.Note that most speakers are not shielded, evenwith complete surround sets only the Centerspeaker may be.

Depending on the specifics of your roomacoustics and the type of speakers in use, youmay find that imaging is improved by moving thefront-left and front-right speakers slightlyforward of the center-channel speaker. Ifpossible, adjust all front loudspeakers so thatthey are aimed at ear height when you areseated in the listening position.

Using these guidelines, you’ll find that it takessome experimentation to find the correctlocation for the front speakers in your particularinstallation. Don’t be afraid to move thingsaround until the system sounds correct. Optimizeyour speakers so that audio transitions acrossthe front of the room sound smooth.

Surround speakers should be placed on the sidewalls of the room, at or slightly behind thelistening position. The center of the speakershould face you.

If side-wall mounting is not practical, thespeakers may be placed on a rear wall, behindthe listening position. The speakers should be nomore than two meters behind the rear of theseating area.

Subwoofers produce largely nondirectionalsound, so they may be placed almost anywherein a room. Actual placement should be based onroom size and shape and the type of subwooferused. One method of finding the optimallocation for a subwoofer is to begin by placing itin the front of the room, about 15cm from awall, or near the front corner of the room.Another method is to temporarily place thesubwoofer in the spot where you will normallysit, and then walk around the room until youfind a spot where the subwoofer sounds best.Place the subwoofer in that spot. You shouldalso follow the instructions of the subwoofer’smanufacturer, or you may wish to experimentwith the best location for a subwoofer in yourlistening room.

First Turn On and Use of the OSD

Once the speakers have been placed in theroom and connected, the remaining steps are toprogram the system configuration memories.With the AVR5000 two kind of memories areused, those associated individually with theinput selected, e.g. surround modes, and othersworking independently from any input selectedlike speaker output levels, crossover frequenciesor delay times used by the surround sound processor.

You are now ready to power up the AVR5000 tobegin these final adjustments.

1. Plug the Power Cable into an un-switched AC outlet.

2. Press the Main Power Switch 1 in until itlatches and the word “OFF” on the top of theswitch disappears inside the front panel. Notethat the Power Indicator 3 will turn amber,indicating that the unit is in the Standby mode.

3. Install the three supplied AAA batteries in theremote as shown. Be certain to follow the (+)and (–) polarity indicators that are on the bot-tom of the battery compartment.

4. Turn the AVR5000 on either by pressing theSystem Power Control 2 or the InputSource Selector ! on the front panel, or viathe remote by pressing the AVR Selector 5or any of the Input Selectors 46 on theremote. The Power Indicator 3 will turn greento confirm that the unit is on, and the MainInformation Display Û will also light up.

Using the On-Screen DisplayWhen making the following adjustments, youmay find them easier to make via the unit’s on-screen display system. These easy-to-read dis-plays give you a clear picture of the current sta-tus of the unit and facilitate speaker, delay, inputor digital selection you are making.

To view the on-screen displays, make certain youhave made a connection from the VideoMonitor Out jack on the rear panel to thecomposite or S-Video input of your TV or projec-tor. In order to view the AVR’s displays, the cor-rect video input must be selected on your videodisplay.

IMPORTANT NOTE: When viewing the displayson a projection TV it is important that they not beleft on the screen for an extended period of time.As with any video display, but particularly with

projectors, constant display of a static image suchas these menus or video game images may causethe image to be permanently “burned into” theCRT. This type of damage is not covered by theAVR5000 warranty and may not be covered by theprojector TV set’s warranty.

The AVR5000 has two on-screen display modes,“Semi-OSD” and “Full-OSD.” When making con-figuration adjustments, it is recommended thatthe Full-OSD mode be used. This will place acomplete status report or option listing on thescreen, making it easier to view the availableoptions and make the settings on the screen. TheSemi-OSD mode uses one-line displays only.

Note that when the full OSD system is in use,the menu selections are not shown in theInformation Display Û Y. When the fullOSD menu system is used, OSD ON will appearin the Main Information Display Y and theOSD Indicator M will illuminate to remind youthat a video display must be used.

When the semi-OSD system is used in conjunc-tion with the discrete configuration buttons, theon screen display will show a single line of textwith the current menu selection. That selectionwill also be shown in the Main InformationDisplay Y.

Selecting the On-Screen displayThe full OSD system is always available by press-ing the OSD button L. When this button ispressed the MASTER MENU (Figure 1)will appear, and adjustments are made from theindividual menus. Note that the menus willremain on the screen for 20 seconds after thelatest action was made on the screen menu,then they will “time-out” and disappear fromthe screen. The time-out may be increased to asmuch as 50 seconds by going to theADVANCED SELECT menu, andchanging the item titled FULL OSDTIME OUT.

The semi-OSD system is also available as a sys-tem default, although it may be turned off byusing the ADVANCED SELECT menu.(See page 37). With the semi-OSD system, youmay make adjustments directly, by pressing thebuttons on the front panel or remote control forthe specific parameter to be adjusted as outlinedabove.

Settings to be Made With EachInput Used

The AVR5000 features an advanced memory sys-tem that enables you to establish different con-figurations for the speaker configuration, digitalinput and surround mode for each input source.This flexibility enables you to custom tailor theway in which you listen to each source and havethe AVR5000 memorize them. This means, forexample, that you may associate different sur-round modes and analog or digital inputs withdifferent sources, or set different speaker config-urations with the resultant changes to the bassmanagement system. Once these settings aremade, they will automatically be recalled when-ever you select an input.

The default settings for the AVR5000, as it isshipped from the factory, have all inputs set foran analog source, with stereo as the surroundmode, the front left and right speakers set to“large” (with surround modes other speakers to”small”), and a subwoofer connected. Beforeusing the unit, you will probably want to changethese settings for most inputs so that they areproperly configured to reflect the use of digitalor analog inputs, the type of speakers installedand the surround mode specifics. Remember,since the AVR5000’s memory system keeps thesettings for each input separate from the otherinputs, you will need to make these adjustmentsfor each input used. However, once they aremade, further adjustment is only required whensystem components are changed.

To make this process as quick and as easy aspossible, we suggest that you use the full-OSDsystem with the on-screen menus, and stepthrough each input. Once you have completedthe settings for the first input, many settingsmay be duplicated for the remaining inputs. It isalso a good idea to set the configuration data inthe order these items are listed in the MainAudio Setup Menu, as some settings require aspecific entry in a prior menu item.

The items that follow will describe the individualsettings required for each input. Remember thatonce the settings are made for one input, theymust be made for all other input sources in yoursystem.

Input SetupThe first step in configuring the AVR5000 is toselect an input. This may be done by pressingthe front panel Input Source Selector !until the desired input’s name appears momen-tarily in the Main Information Display Y,and the green LED lights next to the input’sname in the front panel Input Indicators .The input may also be selected by pressing theappropriate Input Selector on the remote control46.

When using the full-OSD system to make thesetup adjustments, press the OSD button Lonce so that the MASTER MENU (Figure1) appears. Note that the › cursor will be nextto the IN/OUT SETUP line. Press theSet button F to enter the menu and theIN/OUTSETUP menu (Figure 2) willappear on the screen. Press the ‹/› buttonsE! until the desired input name appears inthe highlighted video, as well as being indicatedin the front panel Input Indicators by thegreen LED next to the desired input name. If theinput will use the standard left/right analoginputs, no further adjustment is needed.

If you wish to associate one of the digital inputswith the selected input source, press the ¤ but-ton D on the remote while the IN/OUTSETUP menu (Figure 2) is on the screen, andnote that the on-screen cursor will drop down tothe DIGITAL IN line. Press the ‹/› but-tons E! until the name of the desired digi-tal input name appears. To return to theANALOG input, press the buttons until theword analog appears. When the correct inputappears, press the ¤ button D until the ›cursor appears next to RETURN TOMENU, and press the Set button F.

To change the digital input associated with theinput selected at any time using the discretefunction buttons and the semi-OSD system,press the Digital Input Select button ÚGon the front panel or the remote. Within five sec-onds, make your input selection using theSelector buttons on the front panel 5 or the⁄/¤ buttons D on the remote until thedesired digital or analog input is shown in theMain Information Display Y and in thelower third of the video display connected to theAVR5000. Then press the Set button F toenter the new digital input assignment.

An exclusive Harman Kardon feature is the abili-ty to switch front panel jacks from their normaluse as inputs to output connections so thatportable recording devices may easily be con-nected. The front panel analog Video 4 Jacks^ are normally set as an input for use withcamcorders, video games and other portableaudio/video products, but they may be switchedto an output for connection to portableaudio/video recorders. To temporarily switchthem to outputs, select the IN/OUTSETUP menu. Press the ¤ button D untilthe on-screen › cursor is pointing to theVIDEO 4 line. Press the › button ! sothat the word OUT is highlighted. Note thatthe Input/Output Status Indicator $between the S and Composite video jacks willturn red, indicating that the analog Video 4jacks ^ are now record outputs.

On the AVR5000, the Coaxial 3 Digital Jack% is normally an input, but it may also beswitched to a digital output for use with CD-R/RW decks, MD recorders or other digital audiorecorders. To change the jack to an output, pressthe ⁄/¤ buttons D while the IN/OUTSETUP menu is on the screen so that the ›cursor is next to COAXIAL 3 . Then pressthe ‹/› buttons E/! so that the wordOUT is highlighted. Note that the DigitalCoax 3 Status Indicator $ will turn red,indicating that the jack is now a record output.

Note: A signal will be sent to this jack onlywhen the input selected for use by the AVR5000is digital. Digital signals will be passed throughregardless of their format, and which digitalinput (optical or coax) they are fed from.However, analog signals are not converted todigital, and the format of the signal (e.g., PCM,Dolby Digital or DTS) may not be changed.

Selection of the Digital Coax 3 jack as an output will remain effective as long as theAVR 5000 is on. However, once the unit isturned off, the jack will revert to its normal useas an input when the unit is turned on again.

Surround SetupOnce the input setup has been completed, thenext step for that input is to set the surroundmode you wish to use with that input. Since sur-round modes are a matter of personal taste, feelfree to select any mode you wish – you maychange it later. The Surround Mode chart onpage 28 may help you select the mode best suit-ed to the input source selected. However, tomake it easier to establish the initial parametersfor the AVR5000, it is best to select Dolby ProLogic for most analog inputs and Dolby Digitalfor inputs connected to digital sources. In thecase of inputs such as a CD Player, Tape Deck orTuner, you may wish to set the mode to Stereo, ifthat is your preferred listening mode for stan-dard stereo sources, where it is unlikely that sur-

round encoded material will be used.Alternatively, the 5 Channel Stereo or Logic 7Music mode may also be a good choice forstereo-only source material.

It is easiest to complete the surround setupusing the full-OSD on-screen menus. From themain MASTER MENU menu (Figure 1),press the ⁄/¤ button D until the › cursor isnext to the SURROUND SETUP menu.Press the Set button F so that theSURROUNDSETUPmenu (Figure 3 or 4)is on the screen.

Since the factory default for all inputs is Stereo,the words SURR OFF will initially appear inhighlighted video (Figure 3) unless another sur-round mode choice was made with the inputjust selected. To change the surround modewhile the › cursor is next to the surround line,press the ‹/› buttons E! until the desiredsurround mode’s name appears in the highlight-ed video. As the modes are changed, a greenLED will also light next to the mode names inthe Surround Mode Indicators ˜ on thefront panel.

Note that the data lines next to the items in thescreen display will show either numbers or aseries of dashes, depending on whether or notthe specific parameter is adjustable. For example,the Center Delay and Night Mode items are onlyadjustable for Dolby Digital, and the Delay Timeis only adjusted for Dolby Digital and Dolby ProLogic. Note, also, that Dolby Digital and DTS willonly appear as choices (Figure 4) when a digitalinput was previously selected. These settings forDelay, Crossover Frequency and Night mode, thatare independent of any input selected, will bedescribed in the next chapter on page 23.

Speaker SetupThis menu tells the AVR5000 which type ofspeakers are in use. This is important as itadjusts the settings that determine which speak-ers receive low frequency (bass) information. Foreach of these settings use the LARGE settingif the speakers for a particular position are tradi-tional full-range loudspeakers that are capableof reproducing sounds below 100Hz. Use theSMALL setting for smaller, frequency-limitedsatellite speakers that do not reproduce soundsbelow 100Hz. Note that when “small” front (leftand right) speakers are used, a subwoofer isrequired to reproduce low frequency sounds. Ifyou are in doubt as to which category describesyour speakers, consult the specifications in thespeakers’ owner’s manual, or ask your dealer.Remember that the speaker setup must be madeindividually for each input of the AVR5000.

It is best to select the Dolby Pro Logic mode formaking the speaker setup. You should note thesurround mode you´ve associated with the select-ed input, select the Dolby Pro Logic mode andafter the speaker setup was made with thatinput, reset to the surround mode formerlyselected. Note that with the currently selectedinput all settings will be copied to other surroundmodes too (as far as possible) and need not berepeated with any other mode (but with eachinput used).

1. It is easiest to enter the proper settings for thespeaker setup through the SPEAKERSETUP menu (Figure 5). If that menu is notalredy on your screen from the prior adjustments,press the OSD button L to bring up theMASTER MENU (Figure 1), and thenpress the ¤ button D twice so that the cursoris on the SPEAKER SETUP line. At thispoint, press the Set button F to bring up theSPEAKER SETUP menu (Figure 5).

2. When the SPEAKER SETUP menuappears, the on-screen cursor › will be at the topof the list of speaker positions, pointing towardthe LEFT/RIGHT line, which sets the con-figuration for the front left and right speakers. Ifyou wish to make a change to the front speakersconfiguration, press the ‹/› buttons E! sothat either LARGE or SMALL appears,matching the appropriate description from thedefinitions shown above.

When SMALL is selected, low frequency frontchannel sounds will be sent only to the subwooferoutput. Note that if you choose this option andthere is no subwoofer connected, you will not hearany low frequency sounds from the front channels.

When LARGE is selected, a full-range outputwill be sent to the front left and front right out-puts. Depending on the choice made in theSUBWOOFER line in this menu (see below),the front left and right bass information may alsobe directed to a subwoofer.

Important Note: When a speaker set with twofront satellites and a passive subwoofer is used,connected to the front speaker outputs �,the fronts must be set for LARGE.

3. When you have completed your selection for thefront channel, press the ¤ button D on theremote to move the cursor to CENTER.

4. Press the ‹/› buttons E! on the remoteto select the option that best describes yourCenter speaker based on the speaker definitionsshown on this page.

When SMALL is selected, low frequency centerchannel sounds will be sent to the Fronts, if theyare set for LARGE and Sub is turned off. WhenSub is on, low frequency center channel soundswill be sent to the subwoofer only.

When LARGE is selected, a full-range output will be sent to the center speaker output,and with analog and digital surround modes NOcenter channel signal will be sent to thesubwoofer output.

When NONE is selected, no signal will be sentto the center channel output. The receiver willoperate in a “phantom” center channel modeand center channel information will be sent tothe left and right front channel outputs. Thismode is needed if no Center speaker is used(note that for the use of Logic 7C surround modea Center speaker is needed, but Logic 7M workswell without a Center too).

5. When you have completed your selection forthe center channel, press the ¤ button D onthe remote to change the cursor to SURROUND.

6. Press the ‹/› buttons E! on the remoteto select the option that best describes the sur-round speakers in your system based on thespeaker definitions shown on this page.

When SMALL is selected, low frequency sur-round channel sounds will be sent to the Fronts,when Sub is turned off, or to the subwoofer out-put when Sub is on. With Pro Logic mode, thereis no bass in the surround channels.

When LARGE is selected, a full-range outputwill be sent to the surround channel outputs(with all analog and digital surround modes),

and, except with Hall and Theater modes, NOsurround channel bass will be sent to the sub-woofer output.

When NONE is selected, surround sound infor-mation will be split between the front-left andfront-right outputs. Note that for optimal per-formance when no surround speakers are in use,the Dolby 3 Stereo mode should be used insteadof Dolby Pro Logic.

7. When you have completed your selection forthe surround channel, press the ¤ button D onthe remote to move the cursor to SUBWOOFER.

8. Press the ‹/› buttons E! on the remoteto select the option that best describes your sys-tem.

The choices available for the subwoofer positionwill depend on the settings for the other speak-ers, particularly the front left/right positions.

If the front left/right speakers are set toSMALL, the subwoofer will automatically beset to SUB, which is the “on” position.

If the front left/right speakers are set toLARGE, three options are available:

• If no subwoofer is connected to the AVR5000,press the ‹/› buttons E! on the remote sothat NONE appears in the on-screen menu.When this option is selected, all bass informationwill be routed to the front left/right “main”speakers.

• If a subwoofer is connected to the AVR5000,you have the option to have the front left/right“main” speakers reproduce bass frequencies atall times, and have the subwoofer operate onlywhen the AVR5000 is being used with a digitalsource that contains a dedicated Low FrequencyEffects, or LFE soundtrack. This allows you to useboth your main and subwoofer speakers to takeadvantage of the special bass created for certainmovies. To select that option press ‹/› buttonsE! on the remote so that SUB (LFE)appears in the on-screen menu.

• If a subwoofer is connected and you wish touse it for bass reproduction in conjunction withthe main front left/right speakers, regardless ofthe type of program source or surround modeyou are listening to, press the ‹/› buttonsE! on the remote so that SUBL/R+LFE appears in the on-screen menu.When this option is selected, a “complete” feedwill be sent to the front left/right “main” speak-ers, and the subwoofer will receive the front leftand right bass frequencies under frequencyselected in the next option setting on this menu,as described below.

9.When you have completed your selection for thesubwoofer, press the ¤ button n on the remoteto change the cursor to SUBX-OVERFREQ.

At this line you will select the frequency at whichbass information is directed to the SubwooferOutput . The choices available will depend onthe setting made previously for the frontleft/right speakers. When making these selec-tions, choose the crossover frequency that is clos-est to the lower frequency limit of your frontleft/right speakers or, if using large full rangefront L/R speakers able to reproduce bass below40Hz, choose the frequency that is closest to theupper frequency limit of your subwoofer. This fig-ure is normally printed in the Owner’s Manual ordata sheet for the speakers, or consult the speak-er’s manufacturer.

• When the front speakers have been set toLARGE, the crossover choices are 40 Hzor 60 Hz to match the typical crossover pointsof full range speakers. Choose the option that isclosest to your speakers’ design.

• When the front speakers have been set toSMALL, the crossover choices are 80 Hz or 100 Hz to match the typicalcrossover points of the smaller speakers used insatellite speaker systems. Choose the option thatis closest to your speakers’ design.

10. When all speaker selections have been made,press the ¤ button D and then the Set buttonF to return to main menu.

11. The Speaker Configuration may also bechanged at any time without using the full-OSDon-screen menu system by pressing the SpeakerSelect button on the front panel ı or remote". Once the button is pressed,FNTSPEAKER will appear in both the lowerthird of the video display and the MainInformation Display Y.

Within five seconds, either press the front panel‹/› Selector buttons 5 or the ⁄/¤ buttonsD on the remote to select a different speakerposition, or press the Set Button ÔF tobegin the adjustment process for the front leftand right speakers

When the Set button ÔF has been pressedand the system is ready for a change to the frontspeaker setting, the on-screen display and MainInformation Display Y will read FNTLARGE or FNT SMALL depending onthe current setting. Press the front panel ‹/›Selector Buttons 5 or the ⁄/¤ buttons Don the remote until the desired setting is shown,using the instructions for “large” or “small”shown earlier, then press the Set button ÔF.

If another speaker position needs to be changed,press the front panel ‹/› Selector buttons 5or the ⁄/¤ buttons D on the remote toselect a different speaker position, press the Setbutton ÔF and then press the front panel‹/› Selector buttons 5 or the ⁄/¤ buttonsD on the remote until the correct speaker set-ting is shown and press the Set button ÔFagain to confirm the selection.

To assist in making these settings, the icons inthe Speaker/Channel Input Indicators Qwill change as the speaker type is selected ateach position. When only the inner icon box is lit,the speaker is set for “small.” When the inner boxand the two outer boxes with circles inside themare lit, the speaker is set for “large." When noindicator appears at a speaker location, thatposition is set for “none” or “no” speaker.

Note: These icons are available only when mak-ing setup changes in the semi-OSD mode.

As an example, in Figure 6 below, the left frontand right front speakers are set for “large,” thecenter, left surround and right surround speakersare set for small, and a subwoofer is set.

Adjustments for Other InputsAfter one input has been adjusted for surroundmode, digital input (if any) and speaker type,return to the INPUT SETUP line on theAUDIO SETUP menu and enter the set-tings for each input that you will use. In mostcases, only the digital input and surround modewill be different from one input to the next, whilethe speaker type will usually be the same andmay be quickly entered by entering the samedata used for the original input.

Making Settings independent ofselected Input

After the settings described above have beenmade for all input sources in your system, thefollowing settings, made with any input, willremain in effect independent of the inputselected.In order to set delay time for Dolby Digital andDolby Pro Logic surround modes, the OSD menusystem must be used.

Delay Settings Only for the Dolby Digital or Dolby Pro Logicmodes, you will need to adjust the delay timesetting. Note that the delay time is notadjustable for any other modes.

Important Note: Once the delay time is setwith any input it will be effective with all otherinputs too. Moreover the surround delay timesetting must be made only for either the DolbyPro Logic or the Dolby Digital mode. The othersetting will be set automatically.

Due the different distances between the listeningposition for the front channel speakers and thesurround speakers, the amount of time it takesfor sound to reach your ears from the front orsurround speakers is different. You may compen-sate for this difference through the use of thedelay settings to adjust the timing for the specificspeaker placement and acoustic conditions inyour listening room or home theater.

The factory setting is appropriate for most rooms,but some installations create an uncommon dis-tance between the front and surround speakersthat may cause the arrival of front channelsounds to become disconnected from surroundchannel sounds.

To resynchronize the front and surround chan-nels, follow these steps:

1. Measure the distance from the listening/ view-ing position to the front speakers in meters.

2. Measure the distance from the listening/ view-ing position to the surround speakers.

3. Subtract the distance to the surround speakersfrom the distance to the front speakers andmultiply the result by 3.

a. When setting the delay time for the DolbyDigital surround modes, the optimal delay timeis the result of that subtraction. For example, ifthe front speakers are 3 m away and the sur-round speakers are 1 m away, the optimaldelay time is figured as (3–1)x3=6. Thus, inthis example, the delay time for Dolby Digitalshould be set at six milliseconds.

b. When setting the delay time for the Pro Logicmode, take the result of the subtraction andadd 15 to obtain the optimal delay time. Forexample, if the front speakers are 3 m away

and the surround speakers are 1 m away, theoptimal delay time is figured as(3–1)x3+15=21. Thus, in this example, thePro Logic delay should be set at twenty mil-liseconds.

NOTE: The DTS, Logic 7, 5CH Stereo, Hall andTheater modes use a fixed, nonadjustable delaytime.

The Dolby Digital Mode also includes a separatesetting for the center channel delay mode, sincethe discrete nature of these signals makes thelocation of the center channel speaker more crit-ical. To calculate the delay for the center chan-nel, measure the distance from the preferred lis-tening position in the center of the room to boththe center channel speaker and either the left orright speaker.

If the distances are equal, no further adjustmentis required and the center delay should be set tozero. If the distance to the front speakers isgreater than the distance to the center speaker,you may wish to reposition the speakers by mov-ing the front left and front right speakers closerto the listening position or the center speakerfurther away from the listening position.

If repositioning of the speakers is not possible,adjust the center delay time, adding one milli-second of center channel delay for every 30 cmcloser to the listening position the center speak-er is than the front speakers. For example, if thefront left and front right speakers are each 3 mfrom the listening position and the center chan-nel speaker is 2.4 m away, the delay is figured as300 cm –240 cm=60 cm, suggesting an optimalcenter delay of 2 milliseconds.

To set the delay time, continue within theMASTER MENU (Figure 1). If the systemis not already at that point, press the OSD but-ton L to bring up the master menu.To makethe delay settings for the Dolby Digital mode(this will include the Center delay setting, andthe surround delay for the Pro Logic mode willbe set automatically), press the Set F buttonand select any input now that is associated witha digital input and the Dolby Digital surroundmode (the surround mode associated with eachinput selected will be indicated by theSurround Mode Indicators ˜ in the frontpanel), then return to the master menu. Pressthe ¤ button D and then the Set button Fto bring up the surround setup menu, now pressthe ¤ button D once.

As the Dolby Digital mode is selected, the › cur-sor will stop at the CENTER DELAYline. Press the ‹/› buttons E! until thenumber calgulated using the formula shownabove appears in the disply. When theCENTER DELAY is entered, press the ¤button D once to move to the SURRDELAY line so that the delay for the sur-round speakers may be set. Press the ‹/› but-tons E! until the desired figure appears inthe display, using the number calculated usingthe formula shown above for the Dolby Digitalsurround mode (item 3a). When the delay set-tings are complete, press the ¤ button Donce to move to the next line.

Note that the delay settings may also be adjust-ed at any time when the Dolby Digital or DolbyPro Logic modes are in use by pressing theDelay button on the front panel Ò or remote , followed by a press of the Set button F.Next, press the ⁄/¤ buttons n on the remoteer the Selector buttons 5 on the front paneluntil the desired figure appears in the MainInformation Display Y.

Night Mode SettingsThe Night mode is a feature of Dolby Digital thatuses special processing to preserve the dynamicrange and full intelligibility of a movie soundtrack while reducing the peak level. This preventsabruptly loud transitions from disturbing others,without reducing the sonic impact of a digitalsource. Note that the Night mode is only avail-able when Dolby Digital signals are played.

To adjust the Night mode setting from themenu, make certain that the › cursor is on theNight line of the SURROUND SETUPmenu. Next, press ‹/› buttons E! tochoose between the following settings.

OFF: When OFF is in the highlighted video,the Night mode will not function.

MID: When MID is in the highlighted video, amild compression will be applied.

MAX: When MAX is in the highlighted video, amore severe compression algorithm will beapplied.

We recommend that you select the MID settingas a starting point and change to the MAX set-ting later, if desired.

Note that the Night mode may be adjusteddirectly any time that a Dolby Digital source isplaying by pressing the Night button B.When the button is pressed, the words D-RANGE will appear in the lower third ofthe video screen and in the Main InformationDisplay Y. Press the ⁄/¤ button D withinthree seconds to select the desired setting, thenpress Set F to confirm the setting.

When all settings for the surround setup havebeen made, press the ⁄/¤ buttons D so thatthe › cursor is next to RETURN TO

MENU, and press the Set button F toreturn to the master menu.

Output Level AdjustmentOutput level adjustment is a key part of the con-figuration process for any surround sound prod-uct. It is particularly important for a Dolby Digitalreceiver such as the AVR5000, as correct outputswill ensure that you hear sound tracks with theproper directionality and intensity.

NOTE: Listeners are often confused about theoperation of the surround channels. While someassume that sound should always be comingfrom each speaker, most of the time there willbe little or no sound in the surround channels.This is because they are only used when amovie director or sound mixer specifically placessound there to create ambiance, a special effector to continue action from the front of the roomto the rear. When the output levels are properlyset it is normal for surround speakers to oper-ate only occasionally. Artificially increasing thevolume to the rear speakers may destroy theillusion of an enveloping sound field that dupli-cates the way you hear sound in a movie the-ater or concert hall.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The output level can beadjusted for each digital and analog surroundmode separately. This allows you to compensatefor level differences between speakers, that mayalso vary with the surround mode selected, or toincrease or decrease the level of certain speakersintentionally, depending on the surround modeselected.

Before beginning the output level adjustmentprocess, make certain that all speaker connec-tions have been properly made. The systemvolume should be turned down at first. Finally,make certain that the Balance Control * isset to the center “12 o’clock” position.

Using EzSetHarman Kardon’s exclusive EzSet remote makesit possible to quickly and accurately set theAVR5000’s output levels without the use of asound pressure meter, although manual adjust-ment is also available. However, for the easiestset-up, follow these steps while seated in the lis-tening position that will be used most often:

1. Make certain that all speaker positions havebeen properly configured for their “large” or“small” settings (as outlined above) and turn offthe OSD system if it is in use.

2. Adjust the volume so that it is at -15, asshown in the on-screen display or MainInformation Display Y.

3. Select any input associated with the Dolby ProLogic surround mode. Remember to make thesame adjustment with all other surround modesyou´ve associated with the inputs used.

4. First a non-automatic pre-test should bemade: Turn on the internal test tone by pressingthe Test tone button 8. You will hear a testnoise circulate from speaker to speaker in aclockwise direction around the room.

Listen to make certain that the sound comesfrom the speaker position shown in the MainInformation Display Y. If the sound from aspeaker location does NOT match the positionindicated, turn the AVR5000 off using the MainPower Switch 1 and check the speakerwiring to make certain that each speaker is con-nected to the correct output terminal.

5. Hold the remote in front of you at arm’slength, making sure not to cover the EzSetSensor Microphone ( at the top of the remoteand aim it at the AVR5000, not vertically (likeyou’d do with a microphone).

6. Press and hold the SPL Indicator Select& for three seconds. Release the button whenthe Program/SPL Indicator 2 stops flashingand you hear the test noise from the front leftspeaker.

7. At this point, the EzSet circuitry will take over,adjusting the output level of each channel sothat when the process is complete all levels willbe equal and at the set reference point. Thisprocess may take a few minutes, depending onthe extent of adjustment required.

8. During the adjustment you will see the loca-tion of the channel position being adjustedappear in both the on-screen display (if connect-ed) and the Main Information Display Y,alternating with a readout of the output setting,relative to the reference volume level. As theadjustment proceeds, a few things will happensimultaneously:

• The channel position being adjusted will flashin the Speaker/Channel Position IndicatorsQ. If the test noise is heard from a channelother than the one shown in the Indicator, thereis an error in the speaker connections. If this isthe case, press the Test Button 8 TWICE tostop the adjustment. Then, turn the unit off andverify that all speakers are connected to theproper Outputs ��.

• When the front left channel is being set at thebeginning of the process, EzSet will adjust themain volume level, as shown by the indication ofthe FRONT L LEV alternating in the on-screen display (if connected) and the MainInformation Display Y with the volume indi-cation. During the adjustment, the test tone mayseem to pulse, or click, as EzSet changes thelevel. This is a normal aspect of the system’soperation.

• As the other channels are set, the channelname and the adjustment offset will appear inthe on-screen display (if connected) and theMain Information Display Y. While the levelis changing, the Program/SPL Indicator 2will change colors to reflect the output level inrelation to the reference. A red indication showsthat the level is too high, while an amber indica-tion shows that the level is too low. When theIndicator is green, the level is correct, and thetest noise will move to the next channel.

• While adjustments are being made, the redLED under the AVR Selector 5 will flash.This is normal, and indicates that EzSet is oper-ating.

9. After the test noise has circulated oncethrough each channel, it will send the tone tothe front left channel once again, to finallyadjust its output level.

10. Upon completion of the front left channeladjustment, the Program/SPL Indicator will flashgreen three times and then go out. The tone willstop and the AVR5000 will return to normaloperation.

Manual Output Level AdjustmentOutput levels may also be adjusted manually,either to set them to a specific level with an SPLmeter, or to make fine tuning adjustments to thelevels obtained using the EzSet remote.

Manual output level adjustment is most easilydone through the OUTPUT ADJUSTmenu (Figure 7). If you are already at the mainmenu, press the ¤ buttons D until the on-screen › cursor is next to the OUTPUTADJUST line. If you are not at the mainmenu, press the OSD button L to bring upthe MASTER MENU (Figure 1), and thenpress the ¤ buttons D three times so that theon-screen › cursor is next to the Output adjustline. Press the Set button F to bring theOUTPUT ADJUST menu (Figure 7) tothe screen.

As soon as the new menu appears, you will heara test noise circulate from speaker to speaker ina clockwise direction around the room. The testnoise will play for two seconds in each speakerbefore circulating, and a blinking on-screen cur-sor will appear next to the name of each speakerlocation when the sound is at that speaker. Nowturn up the volume until you can hear the noiseclearly.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Because this test noise willhave a much lower level than normal music, thevolume must be lowered after the adjustmentfor all channels is made, but BEFORE you returnto the main menu and the test tone turns off.

After checking for speaker placement, let thetest noise circulate again, and listen to seewhich channels sound louder than the others.Using the front left speaker as a reference, pressthe ‹/› buttons E! on the remote to bringall speakers to the same volume level. Note thatwhen one of the ‹/› buttons is pushed, the testnoise circulation will pause on the channel beingadjusted to give you time to make the adjust-ment. When you release the button, the circula-tion will resume after five seconds. The on-screencursor › can also be moved directly to thespeaker to be adjusted by pressing the ⁄/¤buttons D on the remote.

Continue to adjust the individual speakers untilthey all have the same volume. Note that adjust-ments should be made with the ‹/› buttonsE! on the remote only, NOT the main vol-ume controls.

You may also adjust the output levels manuallywhile using the level indication feature of theEzSet remote. To activate the sensor and indica-tor, simply press and release the SPL IndicatorSelect button & on the remote while the testtone is circulating. The Program/SPL Indicator2 will change color to indicate the level.Because the remote functions as level sensor, inthat case all further adjustments can be madewith the front panel buttons only, with help ofan assisting person. Adjust the level using the‹/› buttons 5 on the front panel until the LEDlights green for all channels. When it is red thelevel is too high; when it is amber the level istoo low. Press the SPL Indicator Select &button when you are finished to turn the sensorand Indicator off.

NOTE: The subwoofer output level is notadjustable using the test tone. To change thesubwoofer level, follow the steps for OutputLevel Trim Adjustment on page 32.

When all channels have an equal volume level,the adjustment is complete. Now turn theVolume Ó$ down to about -40dB, other-wise the listening level may be too high as soonas the source’s music starts to play. To exit thismenu, press the ⁄/¤ buttons D until the on-screen › cursor is next to the RETURN TOMENU line, and then press the Set buttonF to turn the test tone off and return to theMASTER MENU.

The output levels may also be adjusted at anytime using the discrete buttons and semi-OSDsystem. To adjust the output levels in this fash-ion, press the Test Tone Selector ˆ8. Assoon as the button is pressed, the test tone willbegin to circulate as indicated earlier. The correctchannel from which the test noise should beheard will be shown in the lower third of thevideo screen and in the Main InformationDisplay Y. As an added assist, while the testnoise is circulating, the proper channel positionwill also be indicated in the Speaker/ChannelIndicators Q by a blinking letter within thecorrect channel. Turn up the Volume Ó$until you can hear the noise clearly.

To adjust the output level, press the Selectorbuttons on the front panel 5 or the ‹/› but-tons E! until the desired level is shown inthe display or on screen. Once the buttons arereleased, the test noise will begin to circulateagain in five seconds.

When all channels have the same output level,turn the Volume Ó$ down to about -40dB,otherwise the listening level may be too high assoon as the source’s music starts to play. After-wards press the Test Tone Selector ˆ8button again to turn the test tone off and com-plete the process.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Output level adjust-ment made will be effective for all inputs, butonly for the actual surround mode selected. Tobe effective for any other mode select that mode(with any input) and repeat the level adjustmentdescribed above. This will also allow you to com-pensate level differences between speakers, thatmay be different with each surround mode, or toincrease or decrease the level of certain speakersintentionally, depending on the surround modeselected.

Note: Output level adjustment is not availablefor the VMAx or Surround Off mode, as no sur-round speakers are used (so level differencesbetween the speakers in the room cannotoccur). But to compensate level differencesbetween stereo, VMAx and other surroundmodes (independently from the input selected)the outputs can be adjusted with the Level TrimAdjustment procedure, see page 32, also for theSurround Off (Stereo) and VMAx modes.

Once the settings outlined on the previouspages have been made, the AVR5000 is readyfor operation. While there are some additionalsettings to be made, these are best done afteryou have had an opportunity to listen to avariety of sources and different kinds of programmaterial. These advanced settings are describedon pages 36-37 of this manual. In addition, anyof the settings made in the initial configurationof the unit may be changed at any time.As you add new or different sources or speakers,or if you wish to change a setting to betterreflect your listening taste, simply follow theinstructions for changing the settings for thatparameter as shown above. Note that anysettings changed at any time, also when thediscrete buttons are used only, will be stored inmemory in the AVR5000, also if it´s turned offcompletely, unless it will be reset (see page 56).The settings will either depend on the input(Speaker configuration, analog/digital inputselection, surround mode) or on the surroundmode selected (speaker output level) or beindependent from any input or surround mode(crossover, only depending on the front speakerconfiguration), as described on previous pages.Having completed the setup and configurationprocess for your AVR5000, you are about toexperience the finest in music and home theaterlistening. Operation

Basic Operation

Once you have completed the setup and configu-ration of the AVR5000, it is simple to operateand enjoy. The following instructions should befollowed for you to maximize your enjoyment ofyour new receiver:

Turning the AVR5000 On or Off• When using the AVR5000 for the first time, youmust press the Main Power Switch 1 on thefront panel to turn the unit on. This places the unitin a Standby mode, as indicated by the ambercolor of the Power Indicator 3. Once the unitis in Standby, you may begin a listening session bypressing the System Power Control 2 or theSource button ! on the front panel or the AVRSelector 5∫. Note that the PowerIndicator 3 will turn green. This will turn theunit on and return it to the input source that waslast used. The unit may also be turned on fromStandby by pressing any of the Source Selectorbuttons on the remote 4'6∫ç∂.

NOTE: After pressing one of the Input Selectorbuttons 4∂ (except VID4) to turn the unit on,press the AVR Selector 5∫ to have theremote control the AVR functions.

To turn the unit off at the end of a listening ses-sion, simply press the System Power Control2 on the front panel or the Power OffButton 3å on the remote. Power will beshut off to any equipment plugged into the rearpanel Switched AC Outlets � and thePower Indicator 3 will turn amber.

When the remote is used to turn the unit “off” itis actually placing the system in a Standby mode,as indicated by the amber color of the PowerIndicator 3.

When you will be away from home for anextended period of time it is always a good ideato completely turn the unit off with the frontpanel Main Power Switch 1.

NOTE: All preset memories may be lost if theunit is left turned off with the Main PowerSwitch 1 for more than two weeks.

Using the Sleep Timer• To program the AVR5000 for automatic turn-off, press the Sleep Button 9 on the remote.Each press of the button will increase the timebefore shut down in the following sequence:

The sleep time will be displayed in the PresetNumber/Sleep Timer Indicator R and it willcount down until the time has elapsed.

When the programmed sleep time has elapsed,the unit will automatically turn off (to Standbymode). Note that the front panel display will dimto one half brightness when the Sleep functionis programmed. To cancel the Sleep function,press and hold the Sleep Button 9 until theinformation display returns to normal brightnessand the Sleep indicator numbers disappear andthe words SLEEP OFF appear in theMain Information Display Y.

Source Selection

• To select a source, press any of the SourceSelector buttons on the remote46ç∂.

NOTE: After pressing one of the Input Selectorbuttons 4∂ (except VID4) to turn the unit on,press the AVR Selector 5∫ to have theremote control the AVR functions.

• The input source may also be changed bypressing the front-panel Input SourceSelector button !. Each press of the buttonwill move the input selection through the list ofavailable inputs.

• As the input is changed, the AVR5000 willautomatically switch to the digital input (ifselected), surround mode and speaker configura-tion that were entered during the configurationprocess for that source.

• The front-panel Video 4 Inputs ^ may beused to connect a device such as a video gameor camcorder to your home entertainmentsystem on a temporary basis.

• As the input source is changed, the new inputname will appear momentarily as an on-screendisplay in the lower third of the video display.The input name will also appear in the MainInformation Display Y and a green LED willlight next to the selected input’s name in thefront-panel Input Indicators .

• When a pure audio source (Tuner, CD, Tape, 6Channel direct inputs) is selected, the last videoinput used remains routed to the Video 1 andVideo 2 Outputs �� (except from its ownVideo 1/ source) and Video Monitor Output . This permits simultaneous viewing and lis-tening to different sources.

• When a Video source is selected, its audio sig-nal will be fed to the speakers and the video sig-nal for that input will be routed to the appropriateMonitor Output jack and will be viewableon a TV monitor connected to the AVR5000. If acomponent video input is connected to the DVD� or Video 2 � component inputs, it will berouted to the Component Video Outputs �.Make certain that your TV is set to the properinput to view the appropriate video signal (com-posite, S-Video or component video, see Notesfor S-Video on page 16).

Controls and Use of Headphones

• Adjust the volume to a comfortable level usingthe front panel Volume Control Ó or remoteVolume Up/Down $î buttons.

• The Balance Control * may be used toadjust the relative sound output between the leftfront and right front speakers.

• To temporarily silence all speaker outputspress the Mute button �˚. This will inter-rupt the output to all speakers and the head-phone jack, but it will not affect any recording ordubbing that may be in progress. When the sys-tem is muted, the MUTE indicator Z will lightin the Main Information Display Û. Pressthe Mute button �˚ again to return tonormal operation.

• During a listening session you may wish toadjust the Bass Control & and TrebleControl ( to suit your listening tastes or roomacoustics. Note that these controls are not effec-tive with the 6-Channel Direct Input.

• To set the output of the AVR5000 so that theoutput is “flat,” with the Tone controls and theBalance control de-activated, press the ToneMode button 6 button once or twice so thatthe words Tone Out appear momentarilyin the Main Information Display Y. Toreturn the tone controls to an active condition,press the Tone Mode 6 button once or twiceso that the words Tone In momentarilyappear in the Main Information Display Y.

• For private listening, plug the 6.3 mm stereophone plug from a pair of stereo headphonesinto the front panel Headphone Jack 4. Notethat when the headphone’s plug is connected,the word HEADPHONE will scroll onceacross the Main Information Display Y andall speakers will be silenced. When the head-phone plug is removed, the audio feed to thespeakers will be restored.

It uses information encoded 15 ms – 30 ms in a two channel stereo recording to produce four distinct outputs: Left, Center, Right and Initial Setting = 15 msa Mono Surround channel. Use this mode for accurate reproduction of programs bearing the Dolby Surround, DTS Stereo, UltraStereo or other “Surround” logos. Surround-encoded programs include videocassette, DVD and LD movies, TV and cable programs, radio programs and audio CDs. Dolby Pro Logic processing may also be used to provide a pleasing surround effect with some stereophonic source material that does not carry surround encoding.

DOLBY 3 STEREO Uses the information contained in a surround encoded or two channel stereo program to No surround channels create center channel information. In addition, the information that is normally sent to the rear channel surround speakers is carefully mixed in with the front left and front right channels for increased realism. Use this mode when you have a center channel speaker but no surround speakers.

THEATER This surround processing uses matrix surround decoding to simulate a standard movie or Delay time not adjustable stage theater with stereo and even pure mono sources.

HALL 1 and HALL 2 The two Hall modes offer matrix surround decoding choices that simulate Delay time not adjustablea medium-sized chamber hall or opera house with stereo and even pure mono sources.

VMAx Near When only the two front channel loudspeakers are used, Harman’s patented VMAx mode No surround channels VMAx Far delivers a three-dimensional sound space with the illusion of “phantom speakers” at the

center and surround positions. The VMAx N, or “Near Field” mode should be selected whenyour listening position is less than 1,5m from the speakers. The VMAx F, or “Far Field” modeshould be selected when your listening positioin is greater than 1,5m from the speakers.

5-Channel Stereo This mode takes advantage of multiple speakers to place a stereo signal at both the front and No delay is available for back of a room. Ideal for playing music in situations such as a party, it places the same signal this modeat the front-left and surround-left, and at the front-right and surround-right speakers. The centerchannel is fed a summed mono mix of the in-phase material of the left and right channels.

SURROUND This mode turns off all surround processing and presents the pure left and right No surround channels OFF (STEREO) channel presentation of two channel stereo programs.

LOGIC 7 CLOGIC 7 M

An advanced mode that extracts the maximum surround information from eitherconventional stereo material or surround-encoded programs. When used with encodedmaterial, decoding is more accurate in terms of the placement of sounds, and fades and pansare much smoother and more realistic than with other decoding techniques. Logic 7 alsodelivers increased spaciousness and a wider sound stage when it is used with conventionalnatural stereo recordings and music programs throug the use of the natural surroundinformation present also in those stereo recordings. The Logic 7C or Cinema mode is tailoredto provide an optimal sound field for movie soundtracks. The Logic 7M or Music mode uses adecoding formula that is best suited to music.

Surround Mode Selection

One of the most important features of the AVR5000 is its ability to reproduce a full multi-channel surround sound field from digitalsources, analog matrix surround encoded pro-grams and standard stereo or even mono pro-grams. In all, a total of thirteen listening modesare available on the AVR5000.

Selection of a surround mode is based on personaltaste, as well as the type of program source mate-rial being used. For example, motion pictures or TVprograms bearing the logo of one of the majorsurround encoding processes, such as DolbySurround, DTS Stereo or UltraStereo†† should beplayed in either the Dolby 3 Stereo or Dolby ProLogic surround modes depending on the sourcematerial and speakers in use.

However to create wider, enveloping sound fieldenvironments and more defined pans andflyovers with all analog stereo and surroundrecordings select Harman Kardon’s exclusiveLogic 7 mode, that creates a stereophonic leftand right rear signal, just as recorded in real life(e.g. sound being recorded from left rear side willbe heard from that side only) for a dramaticimprovement in comparison to Dolby Pro Logic.

NOTE: Once a program has been encoded withmatrix surround information, it retains the sur-round information as long as the program isbroadcast in stereo. Thus, movies with surroundsound may be decoded via any of the analog sur-round modes such as Pro Logic or Logic 7, whenthey are broadcast via conventional TV stations,cable, pay TV and satellite transmission. In addi-tion, a growing number of made-for-televisionprograms, sports broadcasts, radio dramas andmusic CDs are also recorded in surround sound.You may view a list of these programs at the DolbyLaboratories Web site at www.dolby.com.

Even when a program is not listed as carryingintentional surround information, you may findthat the Pro Logic, Dolby 3 Stereo or Logic 7modes often deliver enveloping surround presen-tations through the use of the natural surroundinformation present in all stereo recordings.However, for stereo programs without any sur-round information the Theater, Hall and 5CHStereo modes should be tried (5CH Stereo is effec-tive particularly with old ”extreme” stereo record-ings) and for mono programs, we suggest that youtry the Theater or Hall modes. And when you useonly two front channel speakers you should selectHarman’s patented VMAx mode, delivering a virtu-ally three dimensional sound space with twospeakers only.

Surround modes are selected using either thefront panel controls or the remote. To select asurround mode from the front panel, press theSurround Mode Selector 7 to scroll throughthe list of available modes. To select a surround

mode using the remote, press the SurroundMode SelectorA, and then press the ⁄ /¤buttons D to change the mode. As you pressthe buttons, the Surround mode name willappear in the Main Information Display Y,and an individual mode indicator will also lightup C D F H I J K L N. As the sur-round modes change, a green LED will light nextto the current mode in the Surround ModeIndicators list ˜ on the front panel.

Note that the Dolby Digital or DTS modes mayonly be selected when a digital input is in use. Inaddition, when a digital source is present, theAVR5000 will automatically select and switch tothe correct mode (Dolby Digital or DTS), regard-less of the mode that has been previously select-ed. For more information on selecting digitalsources, see the following section of this manual.

To listen to a program in traditional two channelstereo, using the front left and front right speak-ers only (plus the subwoofer if installed and con-figured), follow the instructions shown above forusing the remote until SURR OFF appearsin the Main Information Display Y.

Digital Audio Playback

Digital audio is a major advancement over pastsystems such as Dolby Pro Logic. It delivers five dis-crete channels: left front, center, right front, left sur-round and right surround. Each channel reproducesfull frequency range (20Hz to 20kHz) and offersdramatically improved dynamic range and signifi-cant improvements to signal-to-noise ratios. Inaddition, digital systems have the capability todeliver an additional channel that is specificallydevoted to low frequency information. This is the“.1” channel referred to when you see these sys-tems descibed as “5.1”. The bass channel is sepa-rate from the other channels, but since it is inten-tionally bandwidth limited, sound designers havegiven it that unique designation.

Dolby Digital Dolby Digital (originally known as AC-3®) is a standard part of DVD, and is available on specially encoded LD discs and satellite broadcastsand it is a part of the new high-definition television(HDTV) system.

Note that an optional, external RF demodulatoris required to use the AVR5000 to listen to theDolby Digital sound tracks available on laserdiscs. Connect the RF output of the LD player tothe demodulator and then connect the digitaloutput of the demodulator to the Optical orCoaxial inputs ��#% of the AVR5000. Nodemodulator is required for use with DVD playersor DTS-encoded laser discs.

DTSDTS is another digital audio system that is capa-ble of delivering 5.1 audio. Although both DTSand Dolby Digital are digital, they use differentmethods of encoding the signals, and thus theyrequire different decoding circuits to convert thedigital signals back to analog.

DTS-encoded sound tracks are available on selectDVD and LD discs, as well as on special audio-only DTS CDs. You may use any LD, DVD or CDplayer equipped with a digital output to playDTS-encoded special audio-only CDs with theAVR5000, but DTS-LDs can be played on LDplayers and DTS-DVDs on DVD players only. Allthat is required is to connect the player’s outputto either the Optical or Coaxial input on therear panel �� or front panel #%.

In order to listen to DVDs encoded with DTSsound tracks, the DVD player must be compatiblewith the DTS signal as indicated by a DTS logoon the player’s front panel. Note that early DVDplayers may not be able to play DTS- encodedDVDs. This does not indicate a problem with theAVR5000, as some players cannot pass the DTSsignal through to the digital outputs. If you are indoubt as to the capability of your DVD player tohandle DTS DVDs, consult the player’s owner’smanual.

PCM Audio PlaybackPCM (Pulse Code Modulation) is the non- com-pressed digital audio system used for compactdiscs, Non-Dolby Digital/DTS Laserdiscs and somespecial PCM encoded DVDs. The digital circuits inthe AVR5000 are capable of high quality digital-to-analog decoding, and they may be connecteddirectly to the digital audio output of yourCD/DVD or LD player (LD only for PCM or DTSprograms, for Dolby Digital laser discs an RFadapter is needed, see ”Dolby Digital” above).

Connections may be made to either the Opticalor Coaxial inputs �� on the rear panel or thefront panel Digital Inputs #%.

To listen to a PCM digital source, first select theinput for the desired source (e.g., CD) to feed itsvideo signal (if any) to the TV monitor and toprovide its analog audio signal for recording.Next press the Digital Select button ÚGand then use the ⁄ /¤ buttons D on theremote, or the Selector buttons5 on the frontpanel, until the desired choice appears in theMain Information Display Y, then press theSet button ÔF to confirm the choice.

When a PCM source is playing, the PCM indica-tor A will light. During PCM playback you mayselect any surround mode except Dolby Digital orDTS. When an HDCD encoded disc is beingplayed (see below) and the CD player is connect-ed to the AVR 5000 via a digital connection,select Surround Off as the Surround mode toenjoy the benefits of the HDCD process.

Playback from PCM sources may also benefitfrom the Logic 7. When playing a stereo or sur-round-encoded PCM source, such as an LD or CDor a PCM audio track from DVD, use the Logic 7C or Cinema mode. For stereo or surround encod-ed pure music recordings use the Logic 7 M orMusic mode for a wider front sound stage (seeSurround Mode Chart page 28).

HDCDHDCD, which stands for High DefinitionCompatible Digital®, is a sophisticated processthat enables the AVR 5000 to deliver outstandingdigital-to-analog decoding of PCM signals fromany DVD or CD player, connected to a digitalinput on the AVR 5000, no matter what type ofCD or DVD is played and even when normal,Non-HDCD-compatible players are used (only adigital output is needed).

When a CD with the HDCD logo is played, theAVR 5000 is able to take advantage of the spe-cial recording process that is used in the creationof HDCD disc. The special circuitry enables audiowith extraordinary fidelity, stunning resolutionand the highest possible overall quality.

The AVR 5000 will automatically sense that it isan HDCD recording and the HDCD indicatorA will illuminate on the front panel to remindyou that an HDCD disc is playing.

It is important to note that the HDCD process iscompletely compatible with standard recordings.Indeed, the high-quality digital-to-analog circuitry that is part of HDCD and the HDCDdecoder chip, replacing the monolithic digital filters used in conventional DACs, will enableenhanced performance also with normal,non-HDCD encoded program material.

MP3 Audio PlaybackThe AVR5000 is one of the first A/V receivers toprovide on-board decoding for the MP3 audioformat used on specific computer audio files andby portable MP3 players/recorders. In addition,some new CD and DVD players are capable ofplaying back optical discs that are recorded withMP3, rather than standard CD audio information.By offering MP3 decoding, the AVR5000 is ableto deliver more precise conversion of the digitalsignals to an analog output, along with the ben-efits of listening to MP3 audio through theAVR5000’s high current amplifier and the speak-ers from your surround system, rather than thesmaller speakers and low powered amplifiers typ-ically used with computers.

To take advantage of the AVR5000’s MP3 capa-bilities, simply connect the PCM output of a com-puter sound card able to feed the MP3 format toits digital output, or the PCM output of MP3compatible CD or DVD players or of a portableMP3 player with a digital output, to either therear panel Digital Inputs �� or the front

panel Digital Inputs #%. When the digitalMP3 signal is selected, the MP3 BitstreamIndicator A will light, and the audio will beginplaying.

NOTES:• The AVR5000 is only capable of playing signalsin the MP3 (MPEG 1/Layer 3) format. It is notcompatible with other computer audio codecs.

• The MP 3 DSP mode found in the new AVR5000 requires an MP3 SPDIF stream.Presently, only a few units provide this but in thecoming generations of motherboards and operat-ing system updates this will follow, since SPDIF isthe standard for audio & video hardware.

• The digital audio input signal may be eitheroptical or coaxial, but the signal must be in thePCM format. Direct connection of USB or serialdata outputs is not possible, even though the sig-nals are in the MP3 format. If you have any ques-tions about the data output format from yourcomputer or a sound card, check with thedevice’s Owner’s Manual or contact the manu-facturer’s technical support area.

Selecting a Digital SourceTo utilize either digital mode you must haveproperly connected a digital source to theAVR5000. Connect the digital outputs from DVDplayers, HDTV receivers, satellite systems or CDplayers to the Optical or Coaxial inputs on therear or front panel ��#%. In order to pro-vide a backup signal and a source for analogstereo recording, the analog outputs provided ondigital source equipment should also be connect-ed to their appropriate inputs on the AVR5000rear panel (e.g., connect the analog stereo audiooutput from a DVD to the DVD inputs � on therear panel when you connect the source’s digitaloutputs).

When playing a digital source such as DVD, firstselect its input using the remote or front panelcontrols as outlined in this manual in order tofeed its video signal (if any) to the TV monitorand to provide its analog audio signal for record-ing. When the digital input appropriate with theDVD player is not selected automatically (due tothe input settings made earlier during the systemconfiguration, see page 21), select the digitalsource by pressing the Digital Input Selectorbutton GÚ and then using the ⁄/¤ buttonsD on the remote or the Selector buttons5on the front panel to choose any of theOPTICAL or COAXIAL inputs, as theyappear in the Main Information Display Y ,Display Indicator BE or on-screen display.When the digital source is playing, the AVR5000will automatically detect whether it is a multi-channel Dolby Digital or DTS source or a HDCD,MP3 or conventional PCM signal, which is thestandard output from CD players. A BitstreamIndicator A will light in the Main

Information Display Û to confirm that thedigital signal is Dolby Digital, DTS, MP3, PCM orHDCD.Note that a digital input (e.g. coaxial) remainsassociated with any analog input (e.g. DVD) assoon as it is selected, thus the digital input neednot be re-selected each time the appropriateinput choice (e.g. DVD) is made.

Digital Status IndicatorsWhen a digital source is playing, the AVR5000senses the type of bitstream data that is present.Using this information, the correct surround modewill automatically be selected. For example, DTSbitstreams will cause the unit to switch to DTSdecoding, and Dolby Digital bitstreams will enableDolby Digital decoding. When the unit sensesPCM data, from CDs and LDs and some musicDVDs or certain tracks on normal DVDs, it willallow the appropriate surround mode to beselected manually. Since the range of availablesurround modes depends on the type of digitaldata that is present, the AVR5000 uses a varietyof indicators to let you know what type of signalis present. This will help you to understand thechoice of modes and the input channels recordedon the disc.

When a digital source is playing, a BitstreamIndicator A will light to show which type ofsignal is playing:

DOLBY D: When the DOLBY D indicatorlights, a Dolby Digital bitstream is being received.Depending on the audio track selected on thesource player and number of channels on thedisc, different surround modes are possible. Notethat only one channel without subwoofer, called”1.0” audio, or all five channels with subwoofer(”5.1” audio) or all steps between can be record-ed on digitally surround encoded audio tracks(see NOTE below). With all those tracks, except”2.0” audio, only the Dolby Digital and VMAxmodes are available. When the Dolby Digital sig-nal is only two channel (”2.0”) these two chan-nels (l and r) often contain Pro Logic surroundinformations. With those tracks the AVR5000automatically switches to the Pro Logic mode,but you may also select the Vmax mode.

DTS: When the DTS indicator lights, a DTS bit-stream is being received. When the unit sensesthis type of data, only the DTS mode may be used.

PCM: When the PCM indicator lights, a standardPulse Code Modulation, or PCM, signal is beingreceived. This is the type of digital audio used byconventional compact disc and laser disc record-ings. When a PCM bitstream is present, all modesexcept Dolby Digital and DTS are available. Notethat the PCM signal format can be selected on theDVD player with any audio track, even with DolbyDigital tracks (but not with Dolby Digital decod-ing). So, if selected, even ”2.0” D.D. audio tracks

can be played with all surround modes, also withthe most effective Logic 7.

®

: When this indicator lights in con-junction with the PCM indicator, the CD that isplaying is encoded using the special HighDefinition Compatible Digital® process. HDCD®

discs use 20-bit encoding and other proprietaryprocessing to provide the ultimate in CD listen-ing. Note that HDCD processing is only availablein the Stereo or Surround Off mode.

MP3: When the MP3 indicator lights, a compat-ible MPEG 1/Layer 3 digital signal is beingreceived. This is the popular audio format used bymany computer programs for recording com-pressed audio files. When an MP3 bitstream is present, the sound will automatically be playedin the stereo (surround off) mode. The surroundmodes are not available during MP3 playback.

In addition to the Bitstream Indicators, theAVR5000 features a set of unique channel inputindicators that tell you how many channels ofdigital information are being received and if thedigital signal is interrupted.

These indicators are the L/C/R/LS/RS/LFE lettersthat are inside the center boxes of theSpeaker/Channel Input Indicators Q in thefront panel Main Information Display Û.When a standard analog stereo or matrix sur-round signal is in use, only the “L” and “R” indi-cators will light, as analog signals have only leftand right channels, respectively, even surroundrecordings, carry surround information on the leftand right channels only.

Digital signals, however, may have one to six sep-arate channels, depending on the program mate-rial, the method of transmission and the way inwhich it was encoded. When a digital signal isplaying, the letters in these indicators will light inresponse to the specific signal being received. Itis important to note that although Dolby Digital,for example, is referred to as a “5.1” system, notall Dolby Digital DVD or audio tracks selected onDVD or other Dolby Digital programs are encod-ed for 5.1. Thus, it is sometimes normal for aDVD with a Dolby Digital soundtrack to triggere.g. only the “L” and “R” indicators.

NOTE: Many DVD discs are recorded with both“5.1” and “2.0” versions of the same sound-track, the ”2.0” version often is used with otherlanguages. When playing a DVD, always be cer-tain to check the type of material on the disc.Most discs show this information in the form of alisting or icon on the back of the disc jacket.When a disc does offer multiple soundtrackchoices you may have to make some adjustmentsto your DVD player (usually with the “Audio

Select” button or in a menu screen on the disc)to send a full 5.1 feed to the AVR5000 or toselect the appropriate audio track and thus lan-guage (”2.0” audio tracks can be played with allsurround modes, even with Logic 7, see indicator”PCM” on page 30). It is also possible for thetype of signal feed to change during the courseof a DVD playback. In some cases the previewsof special material will only be recorded in 2.0audio, while the main feature is available in 5.1audio. As long as your DVD player is set for 6-channel output, the AVR5000 will automaticallysense changes to the bitstream and channelcount and reflect them in these indicators.

The letters used by the Speaker/Channel InputIndicators Q also flash to indicate when a bit-stream has been interrupted. This will happenwhen a digital input source is selected before theplayback starts, or when a digital source such asa DVD is put into a Pause mode. The flashingindicators remind you that the playback hasstopped due to the absence of a digital signaland not through any fault of the AVR. This is nor-mal, and the digital playback will resume oncethe playback is started again.

Night Mode A special feature of Dolby Digital is the Nightmode, which enables Dolby Digital input sourcesto be played back with full digital intelligibiltywhile reducing the maximum peak level and lift-ing the low levels by 1/4 to 1/3. This preventsabruptly loud transitions from disturbing otherswithout reducing the impact of the digital source.The Night mode is available only when DolbyDigital mode is selected.

The Night mode may be engaged when a DolbyDigital DVD is playing by pressing the NightButton B on the remote. Next, press the ⁄/¤buttons D to select either the middle range orfull compression versions of the Night mode. Toturn the Night mode off, press the ⁄/¤ buttonsD until the message in the lower third of thevideo display and the Main InformationDisplay Y reads D-RANGE OFF. Whenthe Night mode is active, the Night ModeIndicator O will also illuminate.

The Night mode may also be selected to always beon at either level of compression using the optionsin the Surround Setup Menu. See page 24 forinformation on using the menus to set this option.

IMPORTANT NOTES ON DIGITAL PLAYBACK:1. When the digital playback source is stopped,or in a pause, fast forward or chapter searchmode, the digital audio data will momentarilystop, and the channel position letters inside theSpeaker/Channel Indicators Q will flash.This is normal and does not indicate a problem

with either the AVR5000 or the source machine.The AVR5000 will return to digital playback assoon as the data is available and when themachine is in a standard play mode.

2.Although the AVR5000 will decode virtually allDVD movies, CDs and HDTV sources, it is possiblethat some future digital sources may not be com-patible with the AVR5000.

3. Note that not all digitally encoded programsand not all audio tracks on a DVD contain full5.1-channel audio. Consult the program guidethat accompanies the DVD or laser disc to deter-mine which type of audio has been recorded onthe disc. The AVR5000 will automatically sensethe type of digital surround encoding used, indi-cate it in the Bitstream Indicators A andChannel Input Indicators Q and adjust toaccommodate it.

4. When a Dolby Digital or DTS source is playing,you normally may not be able to select some ofthe analog surround modes such as Dolby ProLogic, Dolby 3, Stereo, Hall, Theater, 5CH Stereoor Logic 7, except with special audio tracks (see indication ”Dolby Digital” on previous page)or data format selected (see ”PCM” on previouspage).

5. When a Dolby Digital or DTS source is playing,it is not possible to make an analog recordingusing the Tape � or Video 1 or Video 2 or�! record outputs, if the source is connectedto any digital input of the AVR5000 only. But theanalog two channel signal of that source, the”Downmix” to Stereo or Dolby Surround, can berecorded by connecting its analog audio outputsto the appropriate analog inputs (e.g. DVD) ofthe AVR5000, even if the digital input of theAVR5000 remains selected. Additionally, the digi-tal signals will be passed through to the DigitalAudio Outputs .

Tape Recording

In normal operation, the audio or video sourceselected for listening through the AVR5000 issent to the record outputs. This means that anyprogram you are watching or listening to may berecorded simply by placing machines connectedto the outputs for Tape Outputs � or Video 1or 2 Outputs ��� in the record mode.

When a digital audio recorder is connected toany of the Digital Audio Outputs $, you areable to record the digital signal using a CD-R,MiniDisc or other digital recording system.Note that all digital signals will be passedthrough to both, coaxial and optical, digital out-puts simultanously, no matter which kind of digi-tal input was selected.

In addition to the rear panel digital outputs, theAVR 5000 offers Harman Kardon’s exclusive con-figurable front panel output jack feature. For easyconnection of portable devices, you may switchthe front panel Digital Coax jack % or theVideo 4 jack ^ from an input to an output byfollowing these steps:

1. Press the OSD button L to view the MASTER MENU (Figure 1).

2. Press the Set button F to enter theIN/OUT SETUP menu (Figure 2).

3. Press the ¤ button D so that the on-screen› cursor is next to VIDEO 4 or COAXI-AL 3 depending on which input you wish tochange to an output. Either input, or both maybe changed at any time.

4. Press either of the ‹/› buttons E/! sothat the word OUT is highlighted.

5. Press the OSD button L to exit the menusand return to normal operation.

Note that once the setting is made, the appropri-ate Input/Output Status Indicator $ willturn red, indicating that the selected analog ordigital jacks are now an output, instead of in thedefault setting as an input. Once changed to anoutput, the setting will remain as long as theAVR 5000 is turned on, unless the setting ischanged in the OSD menu system, as describedabove. Note, however, that once the AVR 5000 isturned off, the setting is cancelled. When the unitis turned on again, the front panel jacks willreturn to their normal default setting as an input.If you wish to use their jacks as an output at afuture time, the setting must be changed againusing the OSD menu system, as described above.

NOTES:• The digital outputs are active only when a digitalsignal is present, and they do not convert an ana-log input to a digital signal, or change the formatof the digital signal (e.g. Dolby Digital to PCM orvice versa, but coaxial digital signals are convertedto optical signals and vice versa). In additon, thedigital recorder must be compatible with the out-put signal. For example, the PCM digital inputfrom a CD player may be recorded on a CD-R orMiniDisc, but Dolby Digital or DTS signals may not.

• To make an analog recording of a Dolby Digitalor DTS source is not possible, if the source is con-nected to a digital input of the AVR5000 only.But the analog two channel signal of that sourcecan be recorded (see item 5, ”Important Noteson Digital Playback” above).

Output Level Trim Adjustment

Normal output level adjustment for the AVR5000 is established using the test tone, asoutlined on pages 24 and 25. In some cases,however, it may be desirable to adjust the outputlevels using program material such as a test disc,or a selection you are familiar with. Additionally,the output level for the subwoofer and those forthe Stereo and VMAx modes can only be adjust-ed using this procedure.

To adjust the output levels using program materi-al, first select the surround mode for which youwant to trim the speakers (see NOTE below), startyour program material source and set the refer-ence volume for the front left and front rightchannels using the Volume ControlÓ$î.

Once the reference level has been set, press theChannel Select button CÙ and note thatFRONT L LEV will appear in the MainInformation Display Y. To change the level,first press the Set button FÔ , and then usethe Selector buttons 5 or the ⁄ /¤ buttonsD to raise or lower the level. DO NOT use thevolume control, as this will alter the referencesetting.

Once the change has been made, press the Setbutton FÔ and then press the Selector but-tons 5 or the ⁄/¤ buttons D to select thenext output channel location that you wish toadjust. To adjust the subwoofer level, press theSelector buttons 5 or the ⁄/¤ buttons Duntil WOOFER LEV appears in the MainInformation Display Y or on-screen display.(only available if the subwoofer is turned on).

Press the Set button FÔ when the name ofthe desired channel appears in the MainInformation Display Y and on-screen display,and follow the instructions shown above toadjust the level.

Repeat the procedure as needed until all chan-nels requiring adjustment have been set. Whenall adjustments have been made press the Setbutton FÔ twice, the AVR5000 will returnto normal operation.

If you are using a disc with noise test signals oran external signal generator as the source fromwhich to trim the output levels, you may use theEzSet feature of the remote to guide you to thecorrect SPL level. To use the remote for this pur-pose, start the test tone from the source andpress and quickly release the SPL IndicatorSelect & to activate the sensor. When the testtone from the source is fed to the speaker youwant to trim, the Program Indicator 2 willchange color to indicate the level. Adjust thelevel for the appropriate channel until the LEDlights green for all channels. When it is red the

level is too high; when it is amber the level is toolow. As the remote is used as sound pressurelevel (SPL) sensor, in this case the channels canbe selected and their levels be adjusted, asdescribed above, with the Channel Select but-ton Ù and the Selector 5 and Set buttonsÔ on the AVR´s front panel only (with help ofan assisting person). After the output levels of allchannels are aligned,press the SPL IndicatorSelect & to turn the sensor and indicator off.

The channel output may also be adjusted usingthe full-OSD on-screen menu system. First, setthe volume to a comfortable listening level usingthe Volume Control Ó$î. Then, pressthe OSD button L to bring up the MAS-TER MENU (Figure 1). Press the ¤ ButtonD until the on-screen › cursor is next to theCHANNEL ADJUST line. Press the SetButton F to activate the CHANNELADJUST menu (Figure 8).

Once the menu appears on your video screen,use the ⁄/¤ buttons D to move the on-screen› cursor so that it is next to the channel that youwish to adjust. Then, use the ‹/› buttonsE! to raise or lower the output level.

When all adjustments are done, press the ⁄/¤buttons D to move the on-screen › cursor sothat it is next to RETURN TO MENUand then press the Set Button F if you wish togo back to the main menu to make other adjust-ments. If you have no other adjustments to make,press the OSD button L to exit the menu system.

NOTE: The output levels may be separatelytrimmed for each digital and analog surroundmode. If you wish to have different trim levels for aspecific mode, select that mode and then follow theinstructions in the steps shown above.

Changing the levels by the trim adjustment asdescribed above will automatically change thelevel settings in the Output Adjust Menu (Fig. 7,page 25) correspondingly (and vice versa). WithStereo and Vmax modes the adjustment proce-dure described above is the only way to trim theoutput level (e.g. to match the Vmax level withother modes).

6-Channel Direct Input

The AVR5000 is equipped for future expansionthrough the use of optional, external adapters forformats that the AVR5000 may not be capable ofprocessing. When an adapter is connected to the6-Channel Direct Input �, you may select itby pressing the 6-Ch Direct Input Selector'. The 6-Channel Direct Input may also beselected by pressing the Input Source Selectorbutton ! on the front panel until the words 6 CH DIRECT appear in the MainInformation Display Y, and a green LEDlights next to 6 CH in the Input Indicators .

Note that when the 6-Channel Direct Input is inuse, you may not select a surround mode, as theexternal decoder determines processing. In addi-tion, there is no signal at the record outputswhen the 6-Channel Direct Input is in use, andthe Tone &( and Balance * controls willnot be effective.

Memory Backup

This product is equipped with a memory backupsystem that preserves tuner presets and systemconfiguration information if the unit is turned offcompletely, accidentally unplugged or subjectedto a power outage. This memory will last forapproximately two weeks, after which time allinformation must be reentered.

Tuner Operation

The AVR5000’s tuner is capable of tuning AM, FMand FM Stereo broadcast stations and receivingRDS data. Stations may be tuned manually, orthey may be stored as favorite station presets andrecalled from a 30 position memory.

Station Selection

1. Press the AM/FM Tuner Select button 6on the remote to select the tuner as an input. Thetuner may be selected from the front panel byeither pressing the Input Source Selector !until the tuner is active or by pressing the TunerBand Selector 9 at any time.

2. Press the AM/FM Tuner Select button 6or Tuner Band Selector 9 again to switchbetween AM and FM so that the desired frequen-cy band is selected.

3. Press the Tuner Mode button I on theremote or hold the Band Selector 9 on thefront panel pressed for 3 seconds to select manu-al or automatic tuning.

When the AUTO indicator X is illuminated in theMain Information Display the tuner will only stopat those stations that have a strong enough signalto be received with acceptable quality.

When the AUTO indicator X is not illuminated,the tuner is in a manual mode and will stop ateach frequency increment in the selected band.

4. To select stations press any Tuning button 8K. When the AUTO indicator X is illumin-ated, press the button to cause the tuner tosearch for the next highest or lowest frequencystation that has an acceptable signal or hold thebutton pressed to tune more quickly and releaseit to start the auto search. In the Auto mode thetuner will play each station in stereo or monomode, just as the program is transmitted. If theAUTO indicator X is not illuminated, tap theTuning button 8K to advance one frequen-cy increment at a time, or press and hold it tolocate a specific station. When the TUNED indi-cator W illuminates, the station is properly tunedand should be heard with clarity.

5. Stations may also be tuned directly by pressingthe Direct button J, and then pressing theNumeric Keys H that correspond to the sta-tion’s frequency. The desired station will auto-matically be tuned after the latest number isentered. If you press an incorrect button whileentering a direct frequency, press the Clear but-ton � to start over.

NOTE: When the FM reception of a stereostation is weak, audio quality will be increasedby switching to Mono mode by pressing theTuner Mode button I on the remote or hold-ing the Band Selector 9 on the front panelpressed for 3 seconds until the STEREOindicator V goes out.

Preset TuningUsing the remote, up to 30 stations may bestored in the AVR5000’s memory for easy recallusing the front panel controls or the remote.

To enter a station into the memory, first tune thestation using the steps outlined above. Then:

1. Press the Memory button � on the remote.Note that MEMORY indicator U will illumi-nate and flash in the Main InformationDisplay Û.

2. Within five seconds, press the Numeric KeysH corresponding to the location where youwish to store this station’s frequency. Onceentered, the preset number will appear in thePreset Number/Sleep Time Display R.

3. Repeat the process after tuning any additionalstations to be preset.

Recalling Preset Stations• To manually select a station previously enteredin the preset memory, press the Numeric KeysH that correspond to the desired station’smemory location.

• To manually tune through the list of stored pre-set stations one by one, press the PresetStations Selector buttons )Q on the frontpanel or remote.

RDS Operation

The AVR5000 is equipped with RDS (Radio DataSystem), which brings a wide range ofinformation to FM radio. Now in use in manycountries, RDS is a system for transmittingstation call signs or network information, adescription of station program type, textmessages about the station or specifics of amusical selection, and the correct time.

As more FM stations become equipped with RDScapabilities, the AVR5000 will serve as an easy-to-use center for both information andentertainment. This section will help you takemaximum advantage of the RDS system.

RDS TuningWhen an FM station is tuned in and it containsRDS data, the RDS Indicator AE will illumi-nate and the AVR5000 will automatically displaythe station’s call sign or other program service inthe Main Information Display Y.

RDS Display OptionsThe RDS system is capable of transmitting awide variety of information in addition to theinitial station call sign that appears when a sta-tion is first tuned. In normal RDS operation thedisplay will indicate the station name, broadcastnetwork or call letters. Pressing the RDS button@P enables you to cycle through the variousdata types in the following sequence:

• The station’s call letters (with some privatestations other information too).

• The station’s frequency.

• The Program Type (PTY) as shown in the listbelow. The PTY Indicator AD will illuminatewhen this data is being received.

• A “text” message (Radiotext, RT) containingspecial information from the broadcast station.Note that this message may scroll across thedisplay to permit messages longer than the eightpositions in the display. Depending on signalquality, it may take up to 30 seconds for the textmessage to appear; in that time, the wordTEXTwill flash in the Information Displaywhen RT is selected. The RT Indicator AB willilluminate when text data is being received andready to be displayed.

• The current time of day (CT). Note that it maytake up to two minutes for the time to appear,in that time the word TIMEwill flash in theinformation display when CT is selected. TheCT Indicator AC will illuminate when timedata is being received. Please note that theaccuracy of the time data is dependent on theradio station, not the AVR5000.

Some RDS stations may not include some ofthese additional features. If the data requiredfor the selected mode is not being transmitted,the Main Information Display Y will showa NO TYPE,NO TEXTor NO TIMEmessage after the individual time out.

In any FM mode the RDS function requires astrong enough signal for proper operation. Ifyou receive a partial message, or any of theRDS, PTY, CT or RT Indicators AE AD AC

AB going on and off, try slowly adjusting theantenna or tune to another stronger RDSstation.

Program Search (PTY)An important feature of RDS is its capability ofencoding broadcasts with Program Type (PTY)codes that indicate the type of material beingbroadcast. The following list shows theabbreviations used to indicate each PTY, alongwith an explanation of the PTY:

You may search for a specific Program Type(PTY) by following these steps:

1. Press the RDS button @P until the cur-rent PTY is shown in the Main InformationDisplay Y.

2. While the PTY is shown, press the PresetUp/Down button )Q or hold them pressedto scroll through the list of available PTY types,as shown above. To simply search for the nextstation transmitting any RDS data, use thePreset Up/Down button )Q until RDSONLYappears in the display.

3. Press any of the Tuning Up/Down buttons8K, the tuner begins to scan the FM bandupwards or downwards for the first station thathas RDS data that matches the desired selec-tion, and acceptable signal strength for qualityreception.

4. While the PTY Indicator AD flashes in thedisplay, the tuner will make up to one completescan of the entire FM band for the next stationthat matches the desired PTY type and hasacceptable reception quality. If no such stationis found, the display will read NONE for someseconds and the tuner will return to the last FMstation in use before the search.

NOTE: Many stations do not transmit a specificPTY. The display will show NONE, when such astation is selected and PTY is active.

NOTE: Some stations transmit constant trafficinformation. To identify as traffic station, theytransmit a specific traffic code constantly, whichcauses the TA Indicator AA to light in the dis-play. These stations can be found by selectingTRAFFIC, the option in front of NEWS in the list.The AVR5000 RDS will find the appropriate sta-tion, even if it is not broadcasting traffic infor-mation when the search is made.

The AVR5000 is equipped with a number ofadvanced features that add extra flexibility tothe unit’s operation. While it is not necessary touse these features to operate the unit, they pro-vide additional options that you may wish touse.

Display Brightness

The AVR5000’s front panel Main InformationDisplay Û is set at a default brightness levelthat is sufficient for viewing in a normally litroom. However, in some home theater installa-tions, you may wish to occasionally lower thebrightness of the display, or turn it off completely.

To change the display brightness setting for aspecific listening session, you will need to makean adjustment in the ADVANCEDSELECT menu. To start the adjustment,press the OSD button L to bring the MAS-TER MENU to the screen. Press the ⁄Button D twice, until the on-screen › cursor isnext to the ADVANCED line. Press the SetButton F to enter the ADVANCEDSELECT menu (Figure 9).

To change the brightness setting, at theADVANCED SELECT menu, make cer-tain that the on-screen › cursor is next to theVFD line, and press the › Button ! untilthe desired brightness level is highlighted in thevideo display. When FULL is highlighted, thedisplay is at its normal brightness. WhenHALF is highlighted, the display is at half thenormal brightness level. When OFF is high-lighted, all of the indicators in the MainInformation Display Û will go dark. Note,however, that the green LEDs for the InputIndicators and the Surround ModeIndicators ˜, as well as for the PowerIndicator 3, will always remain lit to remindyou that the unit is turned on.

If you wish to make other adjustments in themenu, press the ⁄/¤ Buttons D until the on-screen › cursor is next to the desired setting orthe RETURN TO MENU line and pressthe Set button F. If you have no other adjust-ments to make, press the OSD Button L toexit the menu system.

The display brightness may also be changed bypressing and holding the Set button Ô on thefront for three seconds until the message in theMain Information Display Y reads VFDFULL. Within five seconds, press the frontpanel Selector buttons 5 until the desiredbrightness display level is shown. At that point,press the Set button Ô again to enter the setting.

Once the desired brightness level is selected, itwill remain in effect until it is changed again oruntil the unit is turned off.

Turn On Volume Level

As is the case with most audio/video receivers,when the AVR5000 is turned on, it will alwaysreturn to the volume setting in effect when theunit was turned off. However, you may prefer toalways have the AVR5000 turn on at a specificsetting, regardless of what was last in use whenthe unit was turned off. To change the defaultcondition so that the same volume level isalways used at turn-on, you will need to makean adjustment in the ADVANCEDSELECT menu. To start the adjustment,press the OSD button L to bring the MAS-TER MENU (Figure 1) to the screen. Pressthe ⁄ button D twice, until the on-screen ›cursor is next to the ADVANCED line. Pressthe Set button F to enter theADVANCED SELECTmenu (Figure 9).

At the ADVANCED SELECT menumake certain that the on-screen › cursor is nextto the volume default line by pressing the ⁄/¤

buttons D as needed. Next, press the › but-ton ! so that the word ON is highlighted inthe video display. Next, press the ¤ button Donce so that the on-screen › cursor is next tothe DEFAULT VOL SET line. To set thedesired turn-on volume, press the ‹/› buttonsE! or hold them pressed until the desiredvolume level is shown on the DEFAULTVOL SET line. Note that this setting mayNOT be made with the regular volume controls.

NOTE: Since the setting for the turn-on volumecannot be heard while the setting is being made,you may wish to determine the setting beforemaking the adjustment. To do this, listen to anysource and adjust the volume to the desiredlevel using the regular volume controlsÓ$î. When the desired volume level tobe used at turn-on is reached, make a note ofthe setting as it appears in the lower third of thevideo screen or in the Main InformationDisplay Y (a typical volume level will appearas a negative number such as -25dB). Whenmaking the adjustment, use the ‹/› buttonsE! to enter this setting.

Unlike some of the other adjustments in thismenu, the turn-on volume default will remain ineffect until it is changed or turned off in thismenu, even when the unit is turned off com-pletely.

If you wish to make other adjustments in themenu, press the ⁄/¤ Buttons D until the on-screen › cursor is next to the desired setting orthe RETURN TO MENU line and pressthe Set button F. If you have no other adjust-ments to make, press the OSD Button L toexit the menu system.

Advanced Features

Semi-OSD Settings

The semi-OSD system places one line messagesat the lower third of the video display screenwhenever the Volume, Input Source, Surroundmode or tuner frequency of any of the configura-tion settings are changed. The semi-OSD systemis helpful in that enables you to have feedbackon any control changes or remote commandsusing the video display when it is difficult toview the front-panel displays. However, you mayoccasionally prefer to turn these displays off fora particular listening session. You may also wantto adjust the length of time the displays remainon the screen. Both of those options are possiblewith the AVR5000.

To turn off the semi-OSD system, you will needto make an adjustment in the ADVANCEDSELECT menu (Figure 9). To start theadjustment, press the OSD button L to bringthe MASTER MENU to the screen. Pressthe ⁄ Button D twice, until the on-screen ¤cursor is next to the ADVANCED line.Press the Set Button F to enter theADVANCED SELECT menu.

At the ADVANCED SELECT menumake certain that the on-screen › cursor is nextto the SEMI OSD line by pressing the ⁄/¤

buttons D as needed. Next, press the › but-ton ! so that the word OFF is highlightedin the video display.

Note that this setting is temporary and willremain active only until it is changed or until theAVR5000 is turned off. Once the unit is turnedoff, the semi-OSD displays will remain activated,even if they were switched off for the previouslistening session.

To change the length of time that the semi-OSDdisplays remain on the screen, go to theADVANCED SELECT Menu as out-lined earlier, and press the ⁄/¤ buttons D asneeded, until the on-screen › cursor is next tothe SEMI-OSD TIME OUT line. Next,press the ‹/› Buttons E! until the desiredtime in seconds is displayed. Note that unlikemost of the other options in this menu, this is apermanent setting change, and the time-outentry will remain in effect until it is changed,even when the unit is turned off.

If you wish to make other adjustments in themenu, press the ⁄/¤ Buttons D until the on-screen › cursor is next to the desired setting orthe RETURN TO MENU line and pressthe Set button F. If you have no other adjust-ments to make, press the OSD Button L toexit the menu system.

Full-OSD Time Out Adjustment

The FULL-OSDmenu system is used tosimplify the setup and adjustment of theAVR5000 using a series of on-screen menus. Thefactory default setting for these menus leavesthem on the screen for 20 seconds after a periodof inactivity before they disappear from thescreen or Time Out. This Time Out is a safetymeasure to prevent the menu text from burninginto the CRTs in your monitor or projector, whichmight happen if they were left on indefinitely.However, some viewers may prefer a slightlylonger or shorter period before the Time Out dis-play.

To change the Full-OSD Time Out, you will needto make an adjustment in the ADVANCEDSELECT Menu (Figure 1). To start theadjustment, press the OSD button L to bringthe MASTER MENU to the screen. Pressthe ⁄ button D twice, until the on-screen ¤cursor is next to the ADVANCED line.Press the Set Button F to enter theADVANCED SELECT Menu (Figure 9).

At the ADVANCED SELECT menumake certain that the on-screen › cursor is nextto the FULL-OSD TIME OUT line bypressing the ⁄/¤ Buttons D as needed. Next,press the ‹/› buttons E! until the desiredtime is displayed in seconds. Multiroom Operation

The AVR5000 is fully equipped to operate as thecontrol center for a multiroom system withoptional remote external Infrared (IR) sensors,speakers and power amplifiers. Although somemulti-room installations will require the servicesof a specially trained installer, it is possible forthe average do-it-yourself hobbyist to install asimple remote room system.

Installation

The key to remote room operation is to link theremote room to the AVR5000’s location withwire for an infrared receiver and speakers or anamplifier. For complete installation instructionsfor Multiroom use, see page 18.

Multiroom Setup

Once the audio and IR link connections have beenmade, the AVR5000 needs to be configured formultiroom operation using the steps below. Pressthe OSD button L to bring the MASTERMENU (Figure 1) to the screen. Press the ⁄ /¤button D, until the on-screen › cursor is nextto the MULTI-ROOM line. Press the Setbutton F to enter the MULTI-ROOMSETUP menu (Figure 10).

When the MULTI-ROOM SETUPmenu appears, the on-screen › cursor will be atthe MULTI-ROOM line. Since this line isused to turn the system on and off, do not makean adjustment here unless you wish to turn thesystem on at this time. To turn the system on,press the › button E! so that ON is high-lighted. If you do not wish to turn the system onat this time or to proceed to the next step, pressthe ¤ Button D once so that the › on-screencursor is next to the MULTI IN line.

At the MULTI IN line, press the ‹/› but-tons E! until the desired Audio/Video inputto the multi-room system appears in the high-lighted video. When the selection has beenmade, press the ¤ button D once so that the› on-screen cursor is next to the MULTIVOL line.

At the MULTI VOL line, press the ‹/›

buttons E! or hold them pressed until thedesired volume level for the multi-room systemis entered. DO NOT use the regular volume con-trol knobs for this setting. When all settings forthe multiroom setup have been made, press the¤ buttons D once so that the on-screen ›cursor is next to the RETURN TO MENUline and press the Set button F. If you haveno other adjustments to make, press the OSDbutton L to exit the menu system.

Multiroom Operation

When operating the AVR5000 from a remoteroom location where an IR sensor link has beenconnected to the AVR5000’s rear panelMultiroom IR Input %, you may use eitherthe Main remote control or the Zone II remote.To turn on the multiroom feed, press any of theInput Selector buttons on the Zone II remote∫ç∂ or the Main remote 456.Press the AVR Selector 5∫ to turn theunit on to the last source, or any of the otherSelector buttons to turn on to a specific source.

As long as an IR feed to the AVR5000 has beenestablished from the remote room, using any ofthe buttons on either remote will control theremote location volume $î, change thetuner frequency uè, change the tuner preset Q© or mute the output �˚.

If the Remote IR Output jack % on theAVR5000 is connected to an IR Input jack oncompatible Harman Kardon audio componentssuch as CD, DVD or cassette players, the trans-port functions of those machines may also be controlled using the Transport ControlsxɃ©˙∆ on either remote control.

To turn the system off from the remote room,press the Power-Off button 3å.Remember that the AVR5000 may be turned onor off from the remote room regardless of the system’s operation or status in the main room.

NOTE: When the tuner is selected as the sourcefor the remote zone, any change to the frequen-cy or preset will also change the station beinglistened to in the main room, if the tuner is inuse there. Similarly, if someone in the main roomchanges the station, the change will also impactthe remote room.

To activate the feed to the remote room, pressthe Multiroom button # on the remote.Next, press the Set button F. Press the ⁄ /¤buttons D to turn the multiroom feed on oroff. When the multiroom system is on, the Multiindicator P will light in the Main InformationDisplay Û , and the Main InformationDisplay Y or OSD will display MULTI ON.Press the Set button twice F to enter the set-ting.

When the multiroom system is turned on, theinput selected using the Multiroom Menu will befed to the Multiroom Output jacks on therear panel. The volume will be as set in the samemenu, although it may also be adjusted using anoptional IR sensor and the Zone II remote in theremote location or on the optional audio poweramplifier connected to the Multiroom Outputjacks .

Once the multiroom system is turned on, it willremain on even if the AVR5000 is placed in theStandby mode in the main room by pressing thePower Off Button 3 or the System PowerControl 2 on the front panel. To turn off themultiroom system from the main listening room,even when the AVR is in Standby mode, pressthe Multiroom button # and then the Setbutton F. Press the ⁄ /¤ buttons D so thatthe Multi indicator P in the MainInformation Display Û goes out, and theMain Information Display Y or OSD willdisplay MULTI OFF.

Even when the AVR is turned off (to Standbymode) and the Multiroom system is turned offtoo, the multiroom system may be turned on atany time from any room by pressing any of theSelector buttons 456∫ç∂ onthe remote in the remote room.

Programming the Remote

The AVR5000 is equipped with a powerfulremote control that will control not only thereceiver’s functions, but also most popular brandsof audio and video equipment, including CDplayers, TV sets, cable boxes, VCRs, satellitereceivers and other home-theater equipment.Once the AVR5000’s remote is programmed withthe codes for the products you own, it is possibleto eliminate most other remotes and replacethem with the convenience of a single universalremote control.

Programming the Remote with Codes

As shipped from the factory, the remote is fullyprogrammed for all AVR5000 functions, as well asthose of most Harman Kardon CD changers, DVDplayers, CD players and cassette decks. In addition,by following one of the methods below, you mayprogram the remote to operate a wide range ofdevices from other manufacturers.

Note: The Input Selector button Video 4 4cannot be programmed with codes as it functionsas input selector for the AVR only. Moreover, onlythe default code "001" can be programmed onthe AVR Selector button 5.

Direct Code Entry This method is the easiest way to program yourremote to work with different products.

1. Use the tables in the following pages to deter-mine the three-digit code or codes that matchboth the product type (e.g., VCR, TV), and thespecific brand name. If there is more than onenumber for a brand, make note of the differentchoices.

2. Turn on the unit you wish to program into theAVR5000 remote.

3. Press and hold both the Input Selector 4for the type of product to be entered (e.g., VCR,TV) and the Mute button � at the sametime. When the Program/SPL Indicator 2turns amber and begins flashing, release the but-tons. It is important that you begin the next stepwithin 20 seconds.

4. If the unit you wish to program into theAVR5000 remote has a remotable Power on/offfunction, follow these steps:

a. Point the AVR5000’s remote towards the unit tobe programmed, and enter the first three-digitcode number using the Numeric buttons H.If the unit being programmed turns off, the cor-rect code has been entered. Press the InputSelector 4 again, and note that the redlight under the Input Selector will flash threetimes before going dark to confirm the entry.

b. If the product to be programmed does NOTturn off, continue to enter the three-digit codenumbers until the equipment turns off. At thispoint, the correct code has been entered. Pressthe Input Selector 4 again and note thatthe red light under the Input Selector willflash three times before going dark to confirmthe entry.

5. If the Power function of the unit to be pro-grammed cannot be remoted, follow these steps(max. 20 seconds after step 3 above, or else step3 must be repeated first):

a. Enter the first three-digit code number usingthe Numeric buttons H and press theInput Selector 4 again. Press the remotebutton of any transport function remotablewith the unit, e.g. Pause or Play fl N. Ifthe unit being programmed starts that func-tion, the correct code has been entered.

b. If the unit does not start the function whosebutton was pressed, repeat steps 3 and 5aabove with the next three-digit code numberlisted in the setup code table for that brandand product type, until the unit reacts properlyon the transport function transmitted.

6. Try all of the functions on the remote to makecertain that the product operates properly. Keepin mind that many manufacturers use a numberof different combinations of codes, so it is a goodidea to make certain that not only does thePower control work, but that the volume, channeland transport controls work as they should. Iffunctions do not work properly, you may need touse a different remote code.

7. If the unit does not react to any code en-tered, if the code for your product does notappear in the tables in this manual, or if not allfunctions operate properly, try programming theremote with the Auto Search Method.

Note on Using the AVR5000 remote with aHarman Kardon CD Recorder.As shipped from the factory the remote is pro-grammed for controlling Harman Kardon CDplayers. But it is able to control most functionsof the CD Recorder CDR2 and CDR20 (see func-tion list on page 44) too after the code ”002” isentered to the CD Selector button 2 asdescribed above. For returning to the CD playercontrol commands the code ”001” must beentered.

Auto-Search MethodIf the unit you wish to include in the AVR5000’sremote is not listed in the code tables in thismanual or if the code does not seem to operateproperly, you may wish to program the correctcode using the Auto Search method that follows.Note that the Auto Search method works only

with units whose Power functions can beremoted:

1. Turn on the product that you wish to include inthe AVR5000 remote.

2. Press and hold both the Input Selector 4for the type of product to be entered (e.g., VCR,TV) and the Mute button � at the sametime. When the Program/SPL Indicator 2turns amber and begins flashing, release the but-tons. It is important that you begin the next stepwithin 20 seconds.

3. To find out if the code for your unit is pre-pro-grammed, point the AVR5000 remote towards theunit to be programmed, and press and hold the ⁄buttonD. This will send out a series of codesfrom the remote’s built-in data base, with eachflash of the red light under the Input Selector4 indicating that a code has been sent. Whenthe device to be programmed turns off,immediate-ly release the ⁄ buttonD. Note that it may takeone minute or more until the right code is foundand the unit turns off.

4. When the ⁄ button was not released in timeafter the unit turned off, the proper code will be”overrun”. That’s why a function test should bemade: Turn the unit on again and, while theInput Selector 4 still lights red, press the ⁄buttonD once, than the ¤ button D oncetoo. When the unit turns off, the right code wasfound, when not, the code was ”overrun”. To re-find the correct, while the Input Selector 4still lights red, press (not hold pressed) the ¤button D repeatedly to step backwardsthrough the codes available and observe thereaction of the unit at each press. As soon as theunit turns off the correct code is found.

5. Press the Input Selector 4 again, andnote that the red light will flash three timesbefore going dark to confirm the entry.

6. Try all of the functions on the remote to makecertain that the product operates. Keep in mindthat many manufacturers use a number of differ-ent combinations of codes, and it is a good ideato make certain that not only the Power controlworks, but the volume, channel and transportcontrols, as appropriate. If all functions do notwork properly, you may need to Auto-Search fora different code, or enter a code via the DirectCode Entry method.

Programming the Remote

Code Readout

When the code has been entered using the AutoSearch method, it is always a good idea to findout the exact code so that it may be easilyreentered if necessary. You may also read thecodes to verify which device has beenprogrammed to a specific Control Selectorbutton.

1. Press and hold both the Input Selector 4for the device you wish to find the code for andthe Mute button � at the same time. Notethat the Program/SPL Indicator 2 will ini-tally turn amber and begin flashing. Release thebuttons and begin the next step within 20 sec-onds.

2. Press the Set button F. The Program/SPLIndicator 2 will then blink green in a sequencethat corresponds to the three-digit code, with aone-second pause between each digit. Count thenumber of blinks between each pause to deter-mine the digit of the code. One blink is the number1, two blinks is the number 2, and so forth. Notethat a rapid sequence of three blinks is used toindicate a “0.”

Example: One blink, followed by a one-secondpause, followed by six blinks, followed by a one-second pause, followed by four blinks indicatesthat the code has been set to 164.

Learning Codes from a Remote

In addition to using codes from the remote’sinternal code library, the AVR5000’s remote isable to “learn” codes from remotes that may notbe in the code library. In addition, you may usethis function to “learn over” the codes from apreprogrammed device to add functions notincluded in the preprogrammed codes. To learnor transfer codes from an IR remote to theAVR5000’s remote, follow these steps:

1. Place the front of the original remote with thecode being sent so that it is facing the IRTransmitter Window 1 on the AVR5000remote “head-to-head.” The remotes should bebetween 2 and 4cm apart.

2. Select the button on the remote that you wishto use as the device selector for the codes aboutto be entered. This must be any of the InputSelectors 4 (except for VID4).

3. Press the Input Selector 4 button chosenand the Learn Button 7 at the same time.Hold these buttons until the Program/SPLIndicat 2 flashes amber and the light underthe device selector button turns red. Release thebuttons. It is important that you begin the nextstep within 20 seconds.

4. Press the button on the AVR5000 remote thatyou wish to program. Note that the Program/SPL Indicat 2 will stop flashing.

Important Note: Codes cannot be taught to allbuttons on the remote. The buttons with thefollowing numbers are not learnable (fornumbers, see drawing on page 11): 6, 7, 8, 36,37, 9, 12, 33, 19, 29, 20, 21, 22, 23, 26, 27, 28.

5. As long as the Program/SPL Indicator 2is on, press and hold the button on the originalremote that you wish to “teach” into the AVR5000 remote. When the Program/SPLIndicator 2 turns green, release the button.Note that the Program Indicator will then beginto flash amber again.

NOTE: If the Program/SPL Indicator 2 turnsred during Step 5, the programming was not suc-cessful. Repeat the steps to see if the code will“take.” If the indicator keeps flashing red in step 5, this code cannot be taught.

6. Repeat steps 4 though 5 for each button onthe source remote that you wish to transfer tothe AVR5000 remote.

7. Once all codes have been transferred from theoriginal source remote to the AVR5000 remote,press the Learn button 7. This will turn off allLEDs and turn off the learning mode.

8. Repeat Steps 1 through 7 for any additionalremotes you wish to “teach” into the AVR5000Remote.

Erasing Learned CodesThe AVR5000’s remote allows you to remove orerase the code learned into a single button for asingle device, to remove or erase all the codes thathave been learned for a single device, or to eraseall commands that have been learned for alldevices.

To erase a single learned code from within a singledevice’s settings, follow these steps:

1. Press and hold both the Input Selector456 within which the individual button tobe erased has been programmed and the Learnbutton 7.

2. When the red LED under the Input Selectorturns red and the Program/SPL Indicator 2flashes amber, release the buttons.

3. Press and release the Input Selector456 again for the device within which theindividual button to be erased has been pro-grammed.

4. Press the 7 button H three times.

5. Press and release the individual button forwhich the code is to be erased. The Program/SPLIndicator 2 will blink green two times andthen return to amber.

6. To erase other buttons within the same device,press them as noted in Step 5.

7. When all buttons to be erased have beenpressed, press the Learn button 7 to completethe process.

To erase all codes within a single device, followthese steps:

1. Press and hold both the Input Selector456 for which you wish to erase thecodes and the Learn button 7.

2. When the red LED under the Input Selectorturns red and the Program/SPL Indicator 2flashes amber, release the buttons.

3. Press and release the same Input Selector456 again for the device whose codesyou wish to erase.

4. Press the 8 button H three times.

5. The Program/SPL Indicator 2 will turn offand the red light under the Input Selector willflash on and off once to indicate that the codeshave been erased.

Programming the Remote

To erase all codes that have been programmed toall devices in the remote, follow these steps:

1. Press any Input Selector 456 andalso the Learn button 7.

2. When the red LED under the Input Selectorturns red and the Program/SPL Indicator 2flashes amber, release the buttons.

3. Press and release the same Input Selector456 again.

4. Press the 9 button H three times.

5. The Program/SPL Indicator 2 will turn offand the red light under the Input Selector willflash on and off once to indicate that the codeshave been erased.

Macro Programming

Macros enable you to easily repeat frequentlyused combinations of commands with the pressof a single button on the AVR 5000’s remotecontrol. Once programmed, a macro will send out up to 19 different remote codes in a pre-deter-mined sequential order enabling you to automatethe process of turning on your system, changingdevices, or other common tasks. The AVR’sremote can store up to five separate macro com-mand sequences, one that is associated with thePower On button 0, and four more that areaccessed by pressing the Macro buttons M.

1. Press the Mute button � and the Macrobutton M to be programmed or the Power-On button 0 at the same time. Note that thelatest selected Input Selector will light red,and the Program/SPL Indicator 2 will flashamber.

2. Enter the steps for the macro sequence bypressing the button for the actual commandstep. Although the macro may contain up to 19steps, each button press, including those used tochange devices, counts as a step. TheProgram/SPL Indicator 2 will flash greento confirm each button press as you enter com-mands.

NOTE: While entering commands for Power Onof any device during a macro sequence, press theMute button �. DO NOT press the actualPower ON button.

• Remember to press the appropriate InputSelector button 4 before functions arechanged to another device. This is also neededfor the AVR Selector button 5 itself, as longas it’s not lit red and AVR functions shall be pro-grammed.

3. When all the steps have been entered, pressthe Sleep button 9 to enter the commands.The red light under the Input Selector45 will blink and then turn off.

Example: To program the Macro 1 M buttonso that it turns on the AVR 5000, TV and a Sat-Receiver, follow these steps:• Press the Macro 1 button M and Mute �buttons at the same time and then release them.• Note that the Program/SPL Indicator willflash amber.• Press the AVR Selector 5.• Press the Mute � button to store the AVR’spower on command.• Press the VID 2 Input Selector button 4 toindicate the next command is for “TV Power On.”• Press the Mute � button to store the TVPower On Command.

• Press the VID 3 Input Selector button 4to indicate the next command is for “Sat-Receiver Power On.”• Press the Mute � button to store the Sat-Receiver Power On command.• Press the Sleep/Channel Up button 9 tocomplete the process and store the macrosequence.

After following these steps, each time you pressthe Macro 1 button M, the remote will sendall Power On commands.

Erasing Macro CommandsTo remove the commands that have been pro-grammed into one of the Macro buttons, followthese steps:

1. Press the Mute button � and the Macrobutton M that contains the commands youwish to erase.

2. Note that the Program/SPL Indicator 2will flash amber, and the LED under the AVRSelector 5 will turn red.

3. Within ten seconds, press the SurroundMode Selector/Channel Down button A.

4. The red LED under the AVR Selector will goout, and the Program/SPL Indicator 2 willturn green and flash three times before it goesout.

5. When the Program/SPL Indicator 2 goesout, the Macro has been erased.

Programmed Device Functions

Once the AVR5000’s remote has been pro-grammed for the codes of other devices, press theappropriate Input Selector 4 to change theremote from control over the AVR5000 to theadditional product.When you press any of thesebuttons, it will briefly flash in red to indicate thatyou have changed the device being controlled.

When operating a device other than theAVR5000, the controls may not correspond exact-ly to the function printed on the remote or but-ton. Some commands, such as the volume con-trol, are the same as they are with the AVR5000.Other buttons will change their function so thatthey correspond to a secondary label on theremote. For example, the Sleep and Surroundmode selector buttons also function as theChannel Up and Channel Down buttons whenoperating most TV sets, VCRs or Sat-Receivers.

For some products, however, the function of aparticular button does not follow the commandprinted on the remote. In order to see whichfunction a button controls, consult the FunctionList tables printed on page 44. To use thosetables, first check the type of device being con-trolled (e.g., TV, VCR). Next, look at the remotecontrol diagram or page 44. Note that each but-ton has a number on it.

To find out what function a particular button hasfor a specific device, find the button number onthe Function List and then look in the column forthe device you are controlling. For example, but-ton number 54 is the Macro 2 button for theAVR5000, but it is the “Favorite” button formany cable television boxes and satellitereceivers. Button number 32 is the Delay buttonfor the AVR5000, but the Open/Close button forCD players.

Note that the numbers used to describe the but-ton functions at the left for the purposes ofdescribing how a button operates are a differentset of numbers than those used in the rest of thismanual to describe the button functions for theAVR 5000.

Notes on Using the AVR5000 Remote With Other Devices.• Manufacturers may use different code sets forthe same product category. For that reason, it isimportant that you check to see if the code setyou have entered operates as many controls aspossible. If it appears that only a few functionsoperate, check to see if another code set willwork with more buttons.

• Depending on the brand and product type usedthe functions listed in the Function List tablesmay not correspond with the function the unitreacts on the command. In these cases it’s agood idea to edit the reaction of the unit into thecorresponding line of the table or to set up aseparate list.

• When a button is pressed on the AVR5000remote, the red light under the Input Selector4 for the product being operated should flashbriefly. If the Device Control Selector flashes forsome but not all buttons for a particular product,it does NOT indicate a problem with the remote,but rather that no function is programmed forthe button being pushed.

• The remote was pre-programmed with codesfor units of the latest generation, but some codesmay differ from those needed for earlier units.When your device doesn’t react as listed in thefunction list (page 44/45), let the AVR5000remote learn the appropriate codes from theoriginal remote (learning codes see page 40).

Volume Punch-Through

The AVR5000’s remote may be programmed tooperate the Volume Control $ and the Mute� from either the TV or the AVR in conjunctionwith any of the six devices controlled by theremote. For example, since the AVR5000 will likelybe used as the sound system for TV viewing, youmay wish to have the AVR’s volume activatedalthough the remote is set to run the TV.

To program the remote for Volume Punch-Through, follow these steps:

1. Press the Input Selector 4 for the unit youwish to have associated with the volume controland the Mute button � at the same time untilthe red light illuminates under the Input Selector4 and note that the Program/SPL Indicator2 will flash amber.

2. Press the Volume Up button $and notethat.the Program/SPL Indicator 2 will stopflashing and stay amber.

3. Press either the AVR Selector 5 or theInput Selector 4, depending on which sys-tem’s volume control you wish to have attachedfor the punch-through mode. The Program/SPLIndicator 2 will blink green three times andthen go out to confirm the data entry.

Example: To have the AVR’s volume control acti-vated even though the remote is set to controlthe TV, first press the Video/TV Input Selector4 and the Mute button � at the same time.Next, press the Volume Up button $, followedby the AVR Input Selector 5.

NOTE: Should you wish to return the remote tothe original configuration after entering a VolumePunch-Through, you will need to repeat the stepsshown above. However, press the Video/TVInput Selector in steps one and three.

Programming the Remote

Channel Control Punch-Through

The AVR 5000’s remote may be programmed tooperate so that the channel control function foreither the TV, cable or satellite receiver used inyour system may be used in conjunction withone of the other devices controlled by theremote. For example, while using and controllingthe VCR, you may wish to change channels on acable box or satellite receiver without having tochange the device selected by the AVR 5000 orthe remote. To program the remote for ChannelControl Punch-Through, follow these steps:

1. Press the Input Selector button 4 for thedevice you wish to have the channel control asso-ciated with and the Mute button � at thesame time until the red light illuminates under theInput Selector 4 and the Program/SPLIndicator 2 flashes amber.

2. Press the Volume Down button $. TheProgram/SPL Indicator 2 will stop flashingand stay amber.

3. Press and release the AVR 5 or InputSelector button 4 for the device that will beused to change the channels. The Program/SPLIndicator 2 will blink green three times andthen go out to confirm the data entry.

Example: To control the channels using your TVwhile the remote is set to control the VCR, firstpress the VID 1/VCR Input Selector button4 and the Mute button � at the same time.Next, release them and press the Volume Downbutton $, followed by the VID 2/TV InputSelector button 4.

NOTE: To remove the Channel Control Punch-Through and return the remote to its original con-figuration, repeat the steps shown in the exampleabove. However, press the VID 1/VCR InputSelector in Steps 1 and 3.

Transport Control Punch-Through

The AVR 5000’s remote may be programmed tooperate so that the Transport Control Functionsx (Play, Stop, Fast Forward, Rewind, Pause andRecord) for a VCR, DVD or CD will operate in con-junction with one of the other devices controlledby the remote. For example, while using and con-trolling the TV, you may wish to start or stop yourVCR or DVD without having to change the deviceselected by the AVR 5000 or the remote. To pro-gram the remote for Transport Control Punch-Through, follow these steps:

1. Press the Input Selector 4 for the deviceyou wish to have the channel control associatedwith and the Mute button � at the same timeuntil the red light illuminates, under the InputSelector 4 and the Program/ SPL Indicator2 flashes amber.

2. Press the Play button x. The Program/SPLIndicator 2 will stop flashing and stay amber.

3. Press and release the AVR 5 or InputSelector button 4 for the device that will beused to change the channels. The Program/SPLIndicator 2 will blink green three times andthen go out to confirm the data entry.

Example: To control the transport of a CD playerwhile the remote is set to control the TV, press theVID 2/TV Input Selector button 4and theMute button � at the same time. Next,release them and press the Play button x,followed by the CD Input Selector button4.

NOTE: To remove the Channel Control Punch-Through and return the remote to its original con-figuration, repeat the steps shown in the exampleabove. However, press the VID 2/TV InputSelector in Steps 1 and 3.

NOTE: Before programming the remote forVolume, Channel or Transport Punch-Through,make certain that any programming needed forthe specific TV, CD, DVD, Cable or SatelliteReceivers has been completed.

Reassigning Device-Control Selectors

Although any of the Input Selectors 4 is nor-mally assigned to the category of product shownon the remote, it is possible to reassign one ofthese buttons to operate a second device ofanother type. For example, if you have two VCRsbut no cable box receiver, you may program theCBL/SAT 4 button to operate a second VCR.Before following the normal programming stepsfor either Three-Digit entry or Auto Search codeentry, you must first reassign the button with thefollowing steps:

1. Press the Input Selector 4 you wish toreassign and the Mute button � at the sametime until the red light illuminates under theInput Selector 4 and the Program/SPLIndicator 2 flashes amber.

2. Press the Input or Video Device Selector4 for the device, whose function you wish toprogram into the reassigned button.

3. Enter the three-digit code for the specificmodel you wish the reassigned button to oper-ate.

4. Press the same Input Selector 4 pressedin Step 1 once again to store the selection. Thered LED under the re-assigned Input Selector willflash three times and then go out.

Example: To use the CBL/SAT button to operatea second VCR, first press the CBL/SAT InputSelector 4 and the Mute button � at thesame time until the red light glows under the

CBL/SAT 4 button. Press the VCR 4 button,followed by the three-digit code for the specificmodel you wish to control. Finally, press theCBL/SAT 4 button again.

Resetting the Remote Memory

As you add components to your home-theatersystem, occasionally you may wish to totallyreprogram the remote control without the confu-sion of any commands, macros or ”Punch-Through“ programming that you may have done.To do this, it is possible to reset the remote to theoriginal factory defaults and command codes byfollowing these steps. Note, however, that oncethe remote is reset, all commands or codes thatyou have entered will be erased and will need tobe re-entered:

1. Press any of the Input Selector buttons 4and the ”O“ button H at the same time untilthe Program/SPL Indicator 2 begins to flashamber.

2. Press the ”3“ button H three times.

3. The red LED under the Input Selector 4will go out and the Program/SPL Indicator2 will stop flashing and turn green.

4. The Program/SPL Indicator 2 will remaingreen until the remote is reset. Note that this maytake a while, depending on how many commandsare in the memory and need to be erased.

5. When the Program/SPL Indicator 2 goesout, the remote has been reset to the factory set-tings.

Troubleshooting Guide

Processor Reset

In the rare case where the unit’s operation or thedisplays seem abnormal, the cause may involvethe erratic operation of the system’s memory ormicroprocessor.

To correct this problem, first unplug the unit fromthe AC wall outlet and wait at least three min-utes. After the pause, reconnect the AC powercord and check the unit’s operation. If the systemstill malfunctions, a system reset may clear theproblem.

To clear the AVR5000’s entire system memoryincluding tuner presets, output level settings,delay times and speaker configuration data, firstput the unit in Standby by pressing the SystemPower Control button 2. Next, press theTone Mode 6 and the RDS @ buttons simul-taneously.

The unit will turn on automatically and displaythe RESET message in the MainInformation Display Y. Note that once youhave cleared the memory in this manner, it is nec-essary to re-establish all system configurationsettings and tuner presets.

NOTE: Resetting the processor will erase anyconfiguration settings you have made for speak-ers, output levels, surround modes, digital inputassignments as well as the tuner presets. After areset the unit will be returned to the factory pre-sets, and all settings for these items must bereentered.

If the system is still operating incorrectly, theremay have been an electronic discharge or severeAC line interference that has corrupted the mem-ory or microprocessor.

If these steps do not solve the problem, consultan authorized Harman Kardon service depot.

SYMPTOM CAUSE SOLUTION

Unit does not function when Main • No AC Power • Make certain AC power cord is plugged Power Switch is pushed into a live outlet

• Check to see if outlet is switch controlled

Display lights, but no sound • Intermittent input connections • Make certain that all input and speaker or picture connections are secure

• Mute is on • Press Mute button• Volume control is down • Turn up volume control

Sound is heard, but Front-Panel • Display brightness is turned off • Follow the instructions in the Display Brightness section Display does not light on page 36 so that the display is set to VFD FULL

No sound from any speaker; • Amplifier is in protection mode • Check speaker-wire connections for shorts at receiver light around power switch is red due to possible short and speaker ends

• Amplifier is in protection mode • Contact your local Harman Kardon service depotdue to internal problems

No sound from surround or • Incorrect surround mode • Select a mode other than Stereocenter speakers • Incorrect configuration • Check speaker mode

• Stereo or Mono program material • With (analog or digital) Dolby surround modes, the surround decoder may not create rear-channel information from nonencoded programs

• Speakers not properly connected • Check speaker-wire connections or use test toneto verify connections (see page 25)

Unit does not respond to • Weak batteries in remote • Change remote batteriesremote commands • Wrong device selected • Press the AVR selector

• Remote sensor is obscured • Make certain front-panel sensor is visible to remote or connect remote sensor

Intermittent buzzing in tuner • Local interference • Move unit or antenna away from computers, fluorescent lights,motors or other electrical appliances

Letters flash in the Channel Indicator • Digital audio feed paused • Resume play for DVDDisplay and Digital Audio stops • Check that Digital Signal is fed to the Digital Input selected
