INDIAN WHISPERS ‘Never received any enquiries’

Rumours have been circulating throughout Batley in recent weeks of a cult organisation setting up in the area. It has caused much unrest in the Batley neighbourhood with residents feeling threatened it will cause disharmony to the commu-nity and misguidance to the younger generation if the ‘cult’ was to arrive and use the Crossland premises on the corner of Batley Field Hill as a centre for congrega-tion. Awaaz News has probed commu-nity leaders and the council to find out whether such allegations are true and if such a ‘threat to the community’ could be prevented. The Crossland House property is currently under construction and is the centre of allegations. Awaaz can exclusively reveal that there are no tenancies or sale being discussed regarding the rumoured site on the corner of Batley Field Hill and Bradford Road.

Speaking to Mr Vincent Kerr, owner of the building, it was confirmed that there has been no interest in the building to date and ‘At present we have had no tenants for letting purpose and have never received any enqui-ries for any congregational purposes or cults.’ Mr Kerr went on to tell Awaaz investigative journalist that the property was purchased by him some four years ago and initially had plans to convert the property

into residential apartments, but ‘due to various planning issues and the current climate it was decided not to pursue with the original plans’ Construction of the property began as the building had not been in use for a long period of time and not only was it soar on the eyes of passes by, it was also becoming dilapidated as a result of neglect over the years. ‘The building however had deterio-rated and the roof had collapsed in places, therefore due to safety issues we decided to replace the

existing roof along with the windows. Eventually the whole building will receive a full refurbish-ment and will either be for Let or for Sale.’ Mr Kerr informed Awaaz investiga-tive journalist that once the building is complete it will be to Let or for Sale on a commercial or industrial basis.

Legacy School Sport CIC partnered up with Heckmondwike Grammar and Cawley Lane Junior, Infant and Nursery to utilise the facilities at the Grammar School and provide a free Sports Summer Camp for the children from Cawley Lane School. The one week long camp took place at the end of July and has been very positive with 80 key stage 2 children signing up for the week long activities including fitness train-ing, Zumba, Dance, Martial Arts, quality assured coaching, sports parties and school holiday camps.

‘Legacy’ came about after public funding cuts meant the demise of the Spen Valley Schools Sports Partnership. Following lengthy consultations, with schools and community partners, four of the SSP employees, Shaun Fox, Jonny Nolan, Mick Troop and Antony Wood, decided to form a social enterprise which will continue the positive impact of the SSP. We work solely in the UK providing a variety of projects and resources to causes which are often neglected within our community.

There are many issues we refuse to discuss, or are even in denial about. Following the teachings of the Messenger of God (pbuh), it is our duty to care for the people in our wider community and this is a teaching that we have neglected.

W ith your support, there are many areas of work that MCUK is tackling, from feeding the homeless, providing support to hous ebound elderly members, helping prisoners & ex. offenders back into the community, and even youth crime & under - achieving children. Our website ( mcuk.org.uk ) has a lot more information – but do not be under any illusion, these are areas that are on our doo rstep and affecting our communities. For how much longer will we be in denial?

Former UK International Development Minister takes Aid to Gaza

Shahid Malik former Dews-bury MP helped lead a delegation into the Gaza Strip with over £2 million of medi-cal aid. Mr Malik, who was Britain’s first Muslim Minister and a Member of Parliament, went as part of an aid convoy with his wife Sundus and he drove one of over a dozen ambu-lances across the Sinai in Egypt to the Rafah crossing and then into the Gaza Strip. Mr Malik and the convoy were

met at the Rafah crossing by Hamas Government Minis-ters where they stopped for a press conference addressed by the Ministers and Mr Malik. Mr Malik urged unity between Hamas and Fatah and said that a divided people would always be ruled. He said that Israel had a right to peace and prosper-ity but that this was only achievable if peace and pros-perity was delivered for the Palestinians. Mr Malik welcomed the efforts at reconciliation of various Palestinian factions and he praised the patience and courage of the Palestin-ian people who he described as role models. Mr Malik later met with the

Prime Minister of the Gaza Ismail Hania who presented him with a gift and thanked him and the group for their efforts. They also visited a number of hospitals and medical sup-plies stores and talked to medics, nurses and surgeons about some of the challenges they face in their daily lives. Mr Malik said: “Nobody can be anything other than inspired by the people of Palestine - their resilience, their courage and their patience is a lesson for us all. The Palestinians are great role models to people every-where." The trip was Mr Malik’s seventh to Palestine with him first going to the Gaza in 1993.

“We’ve been able to demon-strate a community need for this cost price service”

Over 500 people have now been inoculated against Meningitis(ACWY) as part of a national campaign by the Council

of British Hajjis (CBH). Over a hun-dred of those attended and pre booked the Batley clinic which took place during July at the Al-Hikmah Centre Batley. The clinic was over subscribed with people traveling from all over Yorkshire and as far as Bolton and Blackburn to be inoculated against Meningitis (ACWY). The over subscription and high demand reflected not only the high level of pilgrims from the UK but also a reflection on how cost effective the service is compared to the high costs GP surgeries charge. Ismail Lajporia who travelled from Blackburn commented “the service provided by the CBH was very helpful and informative and saved us money, even though we travelled a fair distance. I would like to see more of these types of clinics and seminars taking place” Rashid Mogradia, CEO at the CBH receives almost daily requests for

the service in towns across the country said, “It is clear some GP’s are charging extortionate amounts for a jab, and all we are doing is making it more afford-able”, “We are also concerned at the rising costs of pilgrimages and will be looking in fine detail at the whole supply chain to bring down prices for the benefit of the public”

Coming Up Next: Hajj Vacines

delivered on Friday 9th September 2011. To book

Gujar at r io t cover up? The Nanavati Commission probing the 2002 Gujarat riots have directed Additional Director of Police (intelligence) to file a report stating which State Intelligence Bureau (S.I.B) records have been destroyed and which are available. This comes amidst conflicting statements by the BJP run Gujarat Government and the Gujarat Direc-tor General of Police (D.G.P). A further twist was added when a state officer commented; "The S.I.B records pertaining to communications that took place during the 2002 riots have been classified as of permanent nature and have not been destroyed and are available," a home department official said on condition of ano-nymity The records have gained greater importance after Senior IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt filed an affidavit to the commission claiming that, on 27th February 2002 Gujarat Chief Minis-ter Nerendra Modi had called a late night meeting of senior officers at his residence, during which he instructed them to ‘let Hindus vent their anger’ against Muslims, after the burning of the Sabarmeti express near Godhra railway station earlier that day. Bhatt further alleged that Modi wanted ‘Muslim’s to be taught a lesson’. Sanjiv Bhatt, who was the DCP at the state intelligence bureau in 2002, further told the commission he could reveal ‘much more’; “If this commission is interested in finding out the truth and if I am given the opportunity to speak out the truth, then I can come out with all the facts that I know and can

recollect at this time.”he said . Bhatt had given an application in May 2011 to the commission seek-ing direction to the disclosure of records and documents pertaining to the 2002 riots by the government and S.I.B. On 30th June 2011, in a startling official admission, the Gujarat government said all records of the S.I.B relating to the 2002 riots (telephone call records, registers of officers’ movements and vehicle log books) were destroyed after five years in 2007, as per regula-tions. This however contradicts Gujarat D.G.P who in May 2011, after Sanjiv Bhatt asked for the records, said; “Those records can only be shown to a court, or a commission legally appointed by a court. S.I.B records are confidential and we cannot give them to any government officer like this”

BJP Accusations mounting The 2002 Gujarat riots were one of the most horrific massacres in India’s history. The world watched footage for days on end in shear disbelief as scenes of destroyed homes and villages aired across the globe. Murder, rape, looting, and buildings torched by an angry mob of Hindu militants targeting Muslim men women and children mostly in and around the city of Ahmedabad, whilst eye witnesses told the worlds reporters of the police standing aside and allowing the extremist mobs to carry out their attacks. Sanjiv Bhatt’s affidavit confirms these very eye witness accounts, as well as the long term suspicion that Nerendra Modi and the BJP were behind the attacks. I. K. Jedeja, BJP spokesman, had already been accused of being present at the Ahmedabad police station during the riots, allegedly issuing instructions to the police not to intervene. Zakia Jafri, wife of murdered congress MP Ehsan Jafri, filed a petition alleging that Modi, Jadeja and 61 others including his cabinet colleagues, police officials and senior bureaucrats aided and abet-ted the riots which left over 1000 people dead across the state. Amongst those murdered were Saeed Dawood, Mohammed Aswat and Sakil Dawood along

with their driver. The individuals were local men from Batley West Yorkshire and were on hoiliday in India at the time.

4,145 rioting incidents Modi has denied Bhatt’s presence at the meeting held on 27th Febru-ary 2002, however a head constable of the Gujarat police and Bhatt’s driver have given clear accounts of the day, both confirm-ing Bhatt’s summoning by the Modi office and eye witness account of his presence at Modi’s residence that night. The Nanavati commission com-prising of retired justice Nanavati and Akshay Mehta began their inquest in March 2002. Since then they have had sixteen extension periods, the latest last month which takes the commission up to the 31st December 2011. To date they have probed 4,145 rioting incidents. The Gujarat riots were the worst asking for is the minutes from this meeting.

communal riots in the history of the state. With an ongoing inquiry it makes no sense for the S.I.B docu-ments to be destroyed by the ruling government, unless the documents are incriminating. This is the view many are taking, as they watch one of the longest inquest’s continue with still no sign of conclusion, in which Nerendra Modi has been accused time after time. Sanjiv Bhatt has asked for adequate security for himself and his family, which the Gujarat government has denied. Citizens from India including historians, actors, musicians, scholars, jour-nalists, activists and academics, have written a letter to the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, urging him to ensure Bhatt and his families safety. The letter stressed that Bhatt is entitled to witness protection programme in accordance with the supreme courts directive in respect of witnesses in riot cases. They further point out the assassination of former Gujarat home minister Haren Pandya who was assassi-nated after making similar accusa-tions regarding the 2002 riots. When Sanjiv Bhatt was asked if what he says will have any bearing on Modi and others, Bhatt said “It would have a bearing even on the history of India”

By Shaykh Faisal Bodhania- compiler of ‘ HAYAA- The Forgotten Branch Of IMAAN

cont. from front page In the Islamic calendar Ramad-haan is the 9th month of the year. The Islamic calendar is based upon the lunar calendar which is approximately ten days shorter than the solar/Gregorian calendar. This means that the month of Ramadhaan moves around the seasons, enabling Muslims to experience fasting in all the seasons. A decade ago, fasting was during the winter months with relatively short fast whereas this year the fast’s come in summer and approximate duration will be nineteen hours each. To many this may seem daunting, but just a quick reminder similar length fasts were kept last year, with relative ease. Fasting during Ramadhaan is one of the five fundamentals of Islam and is obligatory on every sane, mature, healthy Muslim. Almost every religious community that exists or existed are associated with some form of fasting. In its essence, fasting in Islam means to abstain from eating, drinking and sexual intercourse from dawn till sunset, with the intention of fasting for the pleasure of almighty Allah and was ordained in 2 AH, the second year after the Prophet Muhammad’s migration to Madi-nah.

But fasting is not just about staying hungry and thirsty, it encompasses many spiritual and physical ben-efits. Spiritually it leads a person to sincerity of devotion, develops: patience, discipline, steadfastness, unselfishness, social conscience and will power. Fasting also enables the Muslim to feel for the poor who daily experience hunge-and hardships, and to become active in compassion and charity towards them.

At this point it may come into the readers mind as to why the poor are poor. Firstly poverty is not a punishment as wealth is not a reward. The fact is without wrong man would not understand right, without poverty man would not understand gratitude. The Muslim believe is that this world is like an examination room, surrounded by situations upon which we are being tested to then be rewarded in the everlasting life of the hereafter, and as any teenager will testify, there is no real comfort in an examination room. The physical benefits of fasting are quiet often overlooked. Fasting brings a wholesome physiological rest for the digestive trait and central nervous system, normalises the metabolism, can be a means of cure for many diseases such as cardiovascular and circula-tory diseases, diseases of the loco motor system, mucus diseases such as colds, flu’s, asthma, hay fever, sinus. In fact contrary to what one might think, the fact is Muslims

feel healthier in Ramadhaan than outside it. Probably due to the numerous ben-efits of fasting, many non-Muslims also fast. Yahya Emerick writes ‘A surprising number of non Muslims also fast here in North America’. Muslims motive for fasting is not the benefits attained through fasting but the fulfilment of the command of their Lord and Creator Allah. In the month of Ramadhaan work colleagues and friends will see a change in the Muslims. They see the Muslim shun all those acts which will decrease his reward and objective. Even when they are in situations where normally they would succumb to using foul language or showing anger, instead in Ramadhaan they will bite their tongue and resist declar-ing, ‘I am fasting’ as a means to stop the provocation. For many such Muslims, they become so accustomed to the altered routine of Ramadhaan and experience such an intense spiritual life during it that when it ends the desire to maintain some of the changes leads to a more enlightened life style. Little changes though may be seen as by those looking in, the peace of heart is something only he experiences. Towards the end of Ramadhaan there is both a joy and sadness. The joy at the day of Eid, a day of rewards given to the Muslims by their Creator for a month of obedi-ence, and sadness at the leaving of the month of Ramadhaan. A month in which charity and com-passion saw new heights, Masajids filled with recitors of the Qur’an, families united together at the time of eating, savouries being received and distributed to neighbours and friends, a kindness and together-ness spreading throughout the community. All in all, it was Ramad-haan.

Ramadhaan Poem ‘O’ people lets come together as one,

To welcome this most blessed of months, In the days we’ll be fasting,

Pray Taraveeh by night, Reciting the Qur’aan ,

To be our guiding light, Praise Allah for giving us Islaam,

His mercy descending througout this Ramadhaan,

The most common misconcep-tion about wearing a veil is. ‘Were you forced to wear the veil?’ I am a Muslim woman wearing a veil for many years, I can whole heartedly say that it was my decision to wear the veil, and under no circumstances was I forced. Muslim women also have a right to make decisions about their lives, just like anyone else. This veil provides me with an identity. I wore the veil because it represents me as a Muslim woman. Another thing is that when a woman is covered, men cannot judge her by her appear-ance but are forced to evaluate her by her personality, character and morals. Niqab (veil) is not a responsibility, it’s a right given to me by my creator who knows me best. It benefit’s me so why not. In my opinion it’s something every woman should strive for

and want. Another misconception is that ‘do you wear the veil in the house as well?’ The truth is that Muslim women only cover themselves in front of men who are not direct relatives such as brother, father, uncle, to prevent indecent acts or thoughts. My daily life with Niqab is as normal to me as drinking water, it’s so natural. There are many Muslim sisters, in veils, who go about living everyday life along side women from all faith back-grounds. They work together, study together and so on. The veil only conflicts with secular values if it is misunderstood and

taken out of context. Women in Niqab also have desires like any other women. I myself like to dress up and do my hair, but the only difference is that I will only show my beauty to my husband and those who are allowed to see me. For everyone else I cover my self up. I love the fact that I don’t give anyone anything to look at. Islam encourages women to be modest in their dressing and cover the body, but that does not mean you cannot dress fashionably and express your own sense of style. Modern Muslim women have a lot of different option’s to express themselves in a way that respects their belief and Islamic law. Wearing a veil frees a woman from the tyranny of beauty industries and its exploi-tation of the female body. I’m going to tell you a small incident that happened not so long ago, me and a friend had gone

to the market to buy some clothes, my friend was not cov-ered but I was, my friend went up to a stall and she came back fuming saying “that man is chat-ting me up, who does he think he is, I’m not that kind of person” she asked me to go and buy the dress for her, she didn’t want to go in front of that man again. When I walked up to the stall I noticed the same guy had nothing but respect for me. He addressed me with sister and lowered his gaze, I was shocked to see the level of respect differs in the way you cover and dress your self. Niqab is like everything, in the beginning it takes time to adapt but then once you’ve got use to it you don’t want to take it of. In my opinion the veil gives you respect from people around you, as well as comfort in the knowledge of living a life the way I want to.

Life Behind The Veil

What is twitter and how can it help me? By Sumayyah Saloo Twitter is a social network site that allows people from all over the world to communicate and send information to one another through a simple tweet-message to tell people what they are doing. With a limit of 140 letters you can tell people the vital infor-mation they need to know (although you can send longer tweets through partnered sites).

Follow your interest So how is twitter different to all the other social sites? Well twitter, as it says on the website, allows you to follow your interest. This could be celebrities, companies, friends or family anyone with a twitter account really. Unlike facebook and other sites twitter doesn’t have any friend requests therefore you can follow who you like and receive their ‘tweets’ as they send them out. However you can’t talk to the person unless they are following you. This means you can follow your favourite celebrities and find out what they are doing. Through hash tagging (#) and mentions (mentioning the person) you can gamble at a chance of them seeing you tweet. As an example you could tweet: I #love @awaazmultimedia’s new twitter article. When you type @awaazmultimedia into the search bar you would be able to see our tweets and talk to us. Not only that, people who type #love into the search bar would also be able to view your tweet. But it doesn’t stop there twitter

also has things like popular and trendy topics where you can see what people in the UK or world-wide are currently talking about and searching for. You can send tweets through twitter and many connecting websites like twirl, snitter or tumblr, some of which are also blogging sites but these are a completely different story. Twit-ter is also portable which means you can access it through your phone (apps or androids) or iPad which makes the site easy to access. As a twitter addict I love using the site to send tweets out to people I know and new followers I gain through sending tweets. I find it easy to tell people what I am doing and to share my story with fellow ‘tweeters’. I also find the site very useful as I can hash tag a popular topic and instantly get answers to my questions or help-ful tips from other members.

Major advantage to busi-nesses Although twitter is good for anyone to use it is a major advan-tage to businesses and business people. It is a fast and informative way to send messages about your business and allows you to reach a wider market. Twitter also allows you to talk to customers to build a friendly link with your shoppers. You can message (also known as DM) or retweet tweets. Retweeting is simply clicking a button and sharing a tweet of a person you follow. Again it doesn’t stop there, you can adver-tise and promote you business on

twitter. There you have it, the wide world of twitter explained in one article. So sign up and join the millions of people enjoying the vast amounts of opportunities on twitter ,plus its free so you have nothing to lose and remember to follow us at: @AwaazMultimedia.

Around 140 youngsters aged 16-18 who took part in this years Explorer Programme, attended an awards night at the Force Training School, Wakefield, last week where they were rewarded for their hard work and achievements over the past four months. The Explorer Programme aims to inspire young people by giving them an exciting, behind-the-scenes look into 21st century polic-ing. One Explorer from each division was awarded the Explorer of the Year Award. The recipients are as follows: Louise Tolson - Bradford Sam Pearson - Calderdale Jade Tosney - City & Holbeck Zara Ellahi - Kirklees Connor Chadwick - NE Leeds Molly Carnall-Turner - NW Leeds James Stephenson - Wakefield The winners were presented with a Trophy by Chief Constable, Sir Norman Bettison. Chief Constable, Sir Norman Betti-son said: “The Explorer Programme is an excellent initiative which gives young people the chance to shine in their communities.”

“This is the third year that the Explorer Programme has been running and once again, these young people have shown dedica-tion and professionalism during their time here and I’d like to thank them all for taking part.” During the scheme one of the explorer’s, Zara Ellahi, 17 years old from Ravensthorpe, mentions one of her highlights was when she went on patrol in Huddersfield for four hours on the evening of 15 July. She hopes to join the police in the future where her dream is to work in Domestic Violence. After three long years of wait, cam-paigns and fears over thousands of staff losing their jobs, workers at fox’s biscuits in Batley were over-joyed to be told the plans to close the multi-million pound company’s three sites had been scrapped. Northern foods, the parent com-pany of Fox’s biscuits were taken over earlier this year by Ranjit Boparan under his 2 Sisters Food Group. Ultimately this has ensured the company’s future in Batley. Managing Director Graham Hunter released a statement to the employees saying, ‘last week we rolled out a short message to Fox's employees at Batley, Uttoxeter and Kirkham that following the comple-tion of Project Golden and the £26.5m investment, none of the three sites will close as a result.’ Modernisation at the factory and the shedding of a hundred jobs has

r resulted in the factory’s survival. Fox’s were kind enough to speak to Awaaz and confirmed that ‘Fox’s is a strong brand and the name of the company will remain’. Local residents will be pleased to hear the factory shop will stay open and continue to trade to the public. So good news all round.

Kidnapped on holiday four years ago, Madeline McCann has apparently been spotted in India. A British woman is said to have sighted the youngster in the city of Leh, Kashmir. Along with an American man they attempted to take Madeline and free her from the French women and her Belgian husband who were with her. The couple claimed the girl was their daughter and the

resemblance to Madeline was a pure coincidence. A spokesper-son for Leh police has said 'It all depends upon the evidence like DNA for which help from Madeleine's parents and the British police was required.' Uni Fees, A Different Out-look

A wise man with five degrees, who owns an Aston Martin and left university for the first time with a wife, picked up normal newspapers and laughed off media suggestions that students from a poor background shouldn’t go to uni versity because of the hefty un iversity loans.

The media have speculated on university loans being difficult to pay back, putting students into debt for the rest of their lives. But, good old five degree, more qualified than one reporter (and all of them put together), commented on it b eing not a graduate loan but a graduate tax.

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and looks like a duck, then it must be a duck, says Mr Five Life. Similar things can be said about the £9000 a year price tag many universities have taken it upon them selves to roll out to all future applying students.

Although you are paying back £9000 a year, the government has made it possible to pay tuition fees after you’ve completed your course, so you take out a loan from the government to pay for the course, pay ing everything back after you have left university with better prospects.

At this point, many people imagine falling down a deep dark hole, never to find their way back out into the light. Nonsense.

You only start paying back your ‘loan’ once you start ea rning over £21,000 per year for students going to university in 2012 or later. So it doesn’t screech like a loan, but quacks like a tax.

Even then, you’re only paying back a small percentage of what you earn plus a little interest. If you’re not earning th e threshold amount, your payments are put on hold. So, this doesn’t walk like a loan, but waddles like a tax instead. Not quite so frightening.

Furthermore, as your wage increases to 50 - 60% more than a non - graduate, to high levels of dosh, your payments in crease a tad, by a percent or two. On top of all the tax you already have to pay back, this hardly seems to do much than skim the surface of the water. After 30 years from completing your course, all payments are stopped, regardless of whether you have pai d everything back or not. It does not affect taking out a mortgage or going to the bank for a loan to buy the United Arab Emirates. In fact, it isn’t taken into account by anyone except one middle aged accountant, armed with a calculator and very thick gla sses. So it looks like a tax, not like a boisterous loan you have to pay back that affects all your monetary decisions.

So what was it that good old five degree said? If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and looks like a duck, it must be a duck.

We ll, this ‘loan’ waddles like a tax, quacks like a tax and looks like a tax, then it must surely be a tax.

The only reason it’s called a loan is because when you’re trying to get elected, ta xes bring you down, waaay down in poll importance.

Right , so, we’ve got that sorted.

I must say at this point that although your loan from the government will not thrust you into a life of debt, what you decide to spend money on at university may. When it comes to winning the Nigerian lottery or buying some new clothes, choose the clothes, always the clothes. Fashion comes b efore lottery in the dictionary all the time.

How many of your friends have boyfriends? It’s a simple question that gets you thinking. Perhaps all your friends have one, and not having one may make you feel often left out to tempt you to into the trap too. But is it really what you want? Or even the right thing? Sometimes you end up being with a boy simply because you look good together or your friends say ‘its fate’, but what about your own choices and decisions. There are so many influences in this modern day that makes us grow up at such a young age. Take the example of cooking. As soon as a girl is born into an Asian family, she’s appointed the next cook of the household once she becomes a teenager, but with so many women going further to college and university to seek higher education, should we sit back, allowing our lives to be ruled by tradition? Tradition was not once tradition, there was something else there. Who can even look far back enough to remember, old tradition might have been that the men cook and clean, whilst the women spend all day hunting for something to eat or talking about the best elephant thrower of the decade. Over 51% of women go into higher education on a regular basis, surging over the last few decades, where maybe 20% or 30% would be the norm. Increasingly, it’s these women who are also setting up businesses, going into professional careers and taking control of their lives, not just being the designated cook for 7 days a week, but going forward and struggling against, what men say, ‘all odds’ to achieve something and gain respect, higher than a man at times. There is no need for us girls to bare all or throw ourselves to become helpless without the aid of a man. Simply by looking at tests us girls are proven to be smarter, more mature, professional and more creative than a boy ever would, so

why should we be forced to follow decisions made by other people? If a boy decides to go into the army, the likelihood of him making it is huge, but the likelihood of a girl accomplishing the same thing is tiny. Most families would applaud the boy for his patriotism and courage, whilst the girl is sent to work in the kitchen, without so much as a discussion. So many times are we pushed into corners we can’t get out of, told to do things that we don’t want to do, is this all we have to look forward to? Can we have no control over our own decisions and our own life? Remember, old tradition might have been that all men relied on women, and I suppose if they can’t eat without us being there, it probably does. When you turn on the TV or walk into a shop and buy a recipe book, many of these cooks are men, not just women. They’ve decided to go into a traditional career that was once marked for women, so why can’t we go into something that’s marked for men? Technology, science, owning businesses, accountants; when people see these careers, they usually imagine a man sat behind a desk in a grey suit. Boring really. What’s really depressing is that girls are being put down from these jobs by family and in some cases our own friends, as a result of which we are depriving ourselves of bringing some colour to the grey suits and some actual clear-minded intellect that isn’t just wasted in being pressured, say, into a teaching career. So why are we selling ourselves short? We have the skill, we have the intelligence, we can do better, we can achieve more. Bloom like the rose and let no-one rip out your tender petals of purity. Let no-one force you to make a decision you don’t want. Let no-one change us from the people we are and we can prosper.

Having had access to Google plus for a couple of days, I would say that Google has a chance to dominate the social network. The reason for this is due to the social feature being implemented on most Google pages, even their famous homage (the search engine). Google Plus has an elite look not too cluttered like Facebook. There is a slight issue with the colour theme being very bland, but this may change as it matures (it is still in beta testing). Another feature that separated Google+ from its rival social networks is the Circles Feature which is where you can define other members into sections such as Friends, Family and Blogs etc. This feature gives the impression that Google want people to have more

connections, this is not a bad thing as all the contacts would be organised more professionally unlike having everyone tagged friends (for example in Facebook). One letdown of Google plus is that the invitation system is not that friendly. There is no point if you cannot send an invitation to your friends (you can send out an invitation and if your lucky your invitation link will work). This may let it down like Google’s previously failed project, Wave.

Advance screenings of Reliance Entertainment’s eagerly awaited blockbuster release, ‘Singham’, have generated staggering praise among the industry’s most respected critics and stars. Rohit Shetty’s tribute to the classic, Indian action flick, starring a beefed-up Ajay Devgn, has earned widespread adulation among all the right circles, build-ing the anticipation and buzz among cinemagoers ahead of the film’s Opening Weekend. Leading film critic, Taran Adarsh, has given the film 4.5 out of 5 stars, commenting, “SINGHAM is a full-on masala film that works big time for varied reasons: The energetic drama, the terrific confrontations, the raw stunts and of course, for the three 'heroes' - Ajay Devgn, Prakash Raj and director Rohit Shetty. It's a complete package of entertain-ment for the masses and devoted fans of masala movies. This one is sure to roar at the box-office. It has Blockbuster written all over it!” Following a special screening of the film yesterday, veteran of Indian cinema, Amitabh Bachchan, commented on Twit-ter, “SINGHAM! Everything right for a complete masala enter-

tainer, going to be big! Especially in Maharashtra. Well done Ajay/Rohit.” ‘Singham is an action film that is based around an honest police inspector who is based in a small village in Maharashtra which is inherently rife with corruption and crooked politicians. It is Bajirao Singham’s single-minded vision to eradicate this corrup-tion in the region by any means necessary. Singham is an out and out action / drama film which we don’t get to see much nowadays in India. It’s the traditional hero Vs villain storyline, sprinkling of romance, lots of intense action sequences. All in all the film is entertaining and thrilling at the same time.’ ‘Singham’ pays homage to the age-old tradition of the classic, Indian action film, famed for gravity defying stunt sequences and a heavy-handed dose of ‘dishoom. It heralds the bygone days of fist-to-fist combat scenes and carefully coordinated fight choreography – a lost art in today’s screen age of high-tech gadgetry and superimposed special effects. With his feet firmly on the ground as always, Ajay Devgn told Awaaz;

London Olympia saw the inaugural Indian Wedding, Destination and Lifestyle Show (Ardhangini) make its grand debut on Friday 15th – Sunday 17th July 2011. Hrithik Roshan turns up the heat in the hottest film of the Summer - 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' Bollywood’s biggest pin-up star, Hrithik Roshan, has turned up the heat this summer with feel-good film ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, which released in the UK and worldwide on 15th July, and is still showing in cinemas. In the film, audiences will be treated to the breath-taking Spanish plains, in what is proving to be a refreshing Bollywood offering. Directed by one of the most formidable among the new wave of Indian filmmakers, Zoya Akhtar, Hrithik is joined by an exuberant on-screen ensemble including Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol, Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin. Fireworks explode as they unite for an on-screen fiesta that will welcome audiences of all ages and backgrounds to join in the fun and frolics, sure to leave a smile on the face, warm the heart and uplift the spirit. It marks the second time audi-ences are treated to the sound of Hrithik's vocals, lending a vibrancy to the movie's soundtrack, produced by Shan-kar Ehsan Loy. Hrithik Roshan took time out of his busy schedule to provide Awaaz News with an insight into how he came to be involved in this Summer Bollywood Block-buster. Simi Sehgal reports... You apparently decided to do the film after just one script narration. What was it about the script that drew you to this project? Zoya Akhtar, as well as being a close friend, is a hugely accom-plished and talented filmmaker. I

was excited at the chance of working with her again. As I expected, I loved the script from the outset. It is a completely fresh and innovative Indian film offering – I expected no less of Zoya. Much of the shooting for the film took place in Spain. How was your experience there? It was awesome – breathtaking landscape, big-hearted people and steeped in history and culture. Barcelona is just amazing and extremely rich in culture and beautiful architecture too. The film seems to be very “guy” oriented. Do you think there's enough to appeal to women in the film (aside from yourself, that is!) Absolutely, it’s a coming of age tale, and although it may focus primarily around three male friends, it is by no means a ‘lads’ movie. It’s a very human film and focuses on themes that cross gender boundaries – love, life, aspirations, fulfilling your dreams. I hope and have faith that female audiences will find the film extremely charming and endearing – they will love the guys and feel inspired by the ladies. What would you say is the main message of the film? It’s a film about navigating your way in life, following your dreams and your heart. Has this been one of your more enjoyable roles to play? You know, I’ve enjoyed all of the roles I have essayed, for different reasons. ‘Zindagi..’ was certainly a great amount of fun – I was working with two dear, child-hood friends (Zoya and Farhan)

with a great cast and crew in a beautiful location, and working with an amazing script. It was a hugely memorable experience. It was really refreshing to see you in a film like Kites – a film that was made to appeal to a Western audience as well as an Eastern audience. Do you have any plans to one day move into Hollywood films? I wouldn’t ‘move’ into Hollywood films as my roots are firmly set in the Indian film industry. How-ever, as an artist, it is important to challenge yourself and experi-ence different things. I would certainly consider Hollywood films, if the project was right. In fact, there may be a few projects in the pipeline (watch this space). However, I love Indian cinema, it is part of my genetic make-up and I hope to be a part of the industry for as long as audiences and filmmakers want me to be. What is the plot of the film? It’s about three friends from different backgrounds and life experiences, who take an extended bachelor party together, before one among the trio gets married. It’s a fantasy holiday trip of theirs that they planned to take in college, but which never happened. It centres on a road trip during which each one gets to do the ultimate sport of his choice and the other two have to honor their wish. However, it develops into a life changing journey of revelations and epiphanies. Tell me a little bit about the role you play. I play the role of ‘Arjun’, a London based financial trader. Arjun has had a tough life, growing up without a father, which has made

him extremely focused and driven. With reluctance, Arjun takes time off work to make the trip to Barcelona, but he ends up experiencing quite an awaken-ing along the way. You're currently filming for multiple projects, as well as judging on the Just Dance competition. How do you find the energy to do everything? With a lot of focus and a strict regime of exercise, healthy eating and rest. I imagine that Time Manage-ment plays a key role in your day to day life. How do you go about balancing work, family commit-ments and fun? I have a great support team who manage my diary and my daily schedule. When I am not work-ing, it is all about family time – my family is priority number one. In fact, spending time with them when not working is the best form of therapy and relaxation for me.

To women all over the world beauty is more than just a necessity, it’s a hobby and as most of us like to splash the cash on our fav products, we also like to know they’ve been tried and tested for that girl to girl approval. New to the world of writing beauty reviews, I’ve decided to start off in a familiar territory...Urban Decay. Trendy, fun and funky this cosmetic company are sure to bring out the hottest products in the widest range of colours. Their products are right on trend for summer and can create flawless looks on any skin. Unknown to many people, Urban Decay products are suitable for Vegetarians and Vegans! Not only that, they also include all sorts of good ingredients like vitamins E, C and A to nourish and protect your skin. So what do I recommend? Well a must for every girl’s make-up bag is tough eyeliner. Urban Decay’s 24/7 glide on eye pencil will be sure not to budge throughout your day. A dreamy-creamy liner, available in many tropical and vibrant colours, glides on the waterline perfectly and stays put due to its waterproof qualities. These award winning pencils can be used to bring a pop of colour to the waterline or as an all over eye shadow as a base to create any look. The lush liners are filled with jojoba oil, vitamin E and cotton-seed oil, so they won’t be causing any damage to your skin. My recommendations for an everyday liner would be in the shade zero, which is a jet black colour that will match any outfit or look. Also

perfect to create a smoky eye effect, the liner can be used on top of the lid and blended out using fingers and brushes. This eye liner has a weight-less, buttery-smooth feel with total coverage in one glide. Another product I would highly recommend would be the Naked Palette. Probably the most talked about Urban Decay product, this palette includes shimmery, matt seductive tones that are great for going to work and evening wear. This palette includes twelve different shades, including five new colours, ranging from nude neutrals to smoky dark shadows. Not only that, the palette comes with the pro-quality Good Karma Brush and the eye shadow primer potion! The originals of course. Although I completely love this product, my favourite points would be the brush and primer that come with the palette. Not only do you get highly pigmented eye shadows but you also get a good quality, cruelty-free brush, which is amazing as the brush is going to help you to apply your make-up better to achieve the look that you are going for. This brings me to the primer potion...an Urban Decay classic. With this part of the palette you’re guaranteed to have make-up that stays on all day, all night and the potion will give a soft base for your

shadow to make the colours POP! My favourite colours from the palette are Gunmetal, Half-baked and Toasted. I love how Toasted is a soft pink that can be worn through-out the day, but with its shimmery qualities can definitely be used to create an evening look. This is definitely a product that will drive your friends envious and is a good investment due to its versatile eye shadow shades. The final product I want to talk about is the Lip Junkie lip gloss. High gloss, great colour and surpris-ingly yummy taste! Available in 11 amazing shades this gloss works kinda like a lip plumper without the awful burning sensation. Instead this gloss cools your lips and makes them look fuller. This lip gloss has a soft feel when applied and doesn’t feel sticky or gooey at all. The highlight of this product would be its unusually addictive taste. Think sweet, minty and fresh and you can almost

imagine how gorgeous this makes your lips feel. The gloss is also compact and easy to carry around which makes it perfect to slip into any handbag. I personally love this gloss and have it in the shade Wallflower which is a dusky pink. I love how the shade is subtle yet makes my lips stand out. It suits many skin types/colours. I’m always finding my friends sneaking it out of my bag to put it on and it looks great on them. The only criticism I have towards this gloss is the tip of the tube, it’s very small and only applies a little at a time. However if I squeeze some onto my hand I can see that I don’t need a lot of product to cover my lips because it is very smooth and easily spread. Even though the products are a little pricey, they are of a high quality, sure to last you a very long time. So what are you waiting for? Get down to your nearest Urban Decay counter and stock up on these gorgeous products. Available at White Rose shopping centre (Debenhams), Meadowhall (Debenhams and House of Fraser); also available online at www.urbandecay.com

Ayurveda or Ayurvedic medicine, which is a traditional system of medicine native to India, suggests you include all tastes — sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent — in at least one meal each day, to help balance cravings. The following 12 foods can help keep you healthy and lose weight: Turmeric: Regular intake may help reduce low-density lipopro-tein (LDL) or bad cholesterol and high blood pressure, increase blood circulation and prevent

blood clotting, helping to prevent heart attack. Cardamom: This is a herb that increases metabolism and helps burn body fat. Cardamom is considered one of the best digestive aids and is believed to soothe the digestive system and help the body process other foods more efficiently.

Chillies: Foods containing chillies are said to be as foods that burn fat. Chillies contain capsaicin that helps in increasing the metabo-lism. Capsaicin causes the body to burn calories for 20 minutes after you eat the chillies. Curry leaves: Incorporating curry leaves into your daily diet can help you lose weight. These

leaves flush out fat and toxins, reducing fat deposits that are stored in the body, as well as reducing bad cholesterol levels. If you are overweight, incorporate eight to 10 curry leaves into your diet daily. Chop them finely and mix them into a drink, or sprinkle them over a meal.

If you were excited and enter-tained by the Captain America film, you will not be similarly delighted by Captain America : Super Soldier. Though the game tries to be more than a movie tie-in, trying to replicate Arkham Asylum's sprawling atmosphere while offering an engaging combat-system, sadly it falls flat on its face. While the game is set during the film's time-line, the developers missed golden opportunities. You never get to guide Steve Rogers before his transformation and there is no point where you're re-enacting your favourite scenes from the actual film itself. Even

the Red Skull fails to have more than a glancing cameo. Instead, we're left with a plot that centres on a castle within the Bavarian mountains, home to Armin Zola's vile workshop. You'll spend a lot of time destroying antennas, sentry guns and tanks, as well as rescuing members of the Howling Commandos, though secondary characters play little to no part, focusing solely on the main character. The castle has many wings and is seperated out into several sections, though the thought of exploring every single nook and cranny is off-putting thanks to a

lack of detail, as well as limited interactivity with the environ-ments. The game is short, even if you aim to achieve everything, the cam-paign only lasts for a measly six hours, filled with uninspired enemies and boring boss fights which fail to excite, thanks to the lacklustre game play, which is a mix between plat forming and fighting. Though the plat forming is clunky and awkward, combat is actually quite fun and varied, though flawed. The Bottom Line: Captain America is a very average game. Stick to Arkham Asylum if you're looking

for a varied and exciting super-hero video game or wait, because I'm sure that there is something better on the way. A decent combat system which includes variety and requires skill might gain some pleasure, but at the end, it's not enough to save the game from mediocrity. Rating: 3/5

Captain America : Super Soldier

When anyone thinks of the UFC, people think of mats and faces covered in gore. The truth is actu-ally far different and the sport itself is much more complicated than simply trying to injure your opponent as much as possible. But trying to get along with this game – no, exercise programme is quite simply, as messy as a blood-bath. UFC Personal Trainer: The Ultimate Fitness System is avail-able on Playstation Move, the Xbox 360's Kinect system and of course, the Wii (reviewed here). This is one training “game” that takes itself seriously, which health-nuts will be sure to appre-

ciate. It's clear from the outset that effort has been made on the game's appearance. It's well-organised, the menu system is lucid and real UFC trainers have been included. You have a few options from the outset. You can complete a pre-made workout or you can create your own, saving them so then you can repeat them when you want. Each work out includes a warm-up and cool-down period. There are a couple of more “game” like activities too, and the chance to complete a 30 or 60 day schedule. It all sounds good but no matter what console you have, there are a lot of problems that plague your

progress. It will get you sweating, but for Wii owners, the experience is much less smooth than on other systems. The trainers are robotic, repeating the same line over and over, instead of offering valuable feed-back. You might be perform-ing a set using completely the wrong technique, but the game will continue praising you regard-less. There is also very little connection between your on-screen avatar and yourself. Often you'll complete a rep, but the game just won't register it, making for a discouraging experience. The Bottom Line: UFC Personal Trainer had potential to be some-thing great, but too many missteps means that it stumbles

badly. It's more annoying than motivating and there is a lot of focus on the upper body rather than the lower, thanks to technol-ogy constraints. It's not a well-rounded experience, and not even hardcore fans of the UFC will be inspired. Rating: 2/5

UFC Personal Trainer – The Ultimate Fitness System

AfterZoom is a quirky game that's been brought out on DsiWare, which makes pretend that your Dsi or 3DS camera is actually a microscope. Your task is relatively simple, walk around the real world and point the system's camera lens at differ-ent surfaces, such as a kitchen table, or a piece of fruit, or a cushioned chair. The game then “zooms in” and discovers hidden creatures living there. After you've found them, you can capture them, Pokemon style and even battle them against other creatures. It seems and feels daft, but you soon get sucked into it. It gets

addictive, pointing your camera towards different things and seeing what's living there. It helps that there's a large variety of creatures so you won't end up catching them all in the space of an hour. Another aspect that's handled well is taking care of your test tubes filled with organisms. You discover elements like hydrogen and oxygen during your critter-hunts, and you can feed them to your mini-beasts. You can fuse these elements together too, bringing in chemistry without any of the tedium.

It's just as well that it works well, because you'll have to keep your creatures well-fed and growing. The amount of cultures you have correlates to how many beasts you'll eventually attain as well as how strong they are. The Bottom Line: It's a game more for the kids, especially those who enjoy games where there's a lot of collecting, whether it's Pokemon or whether it's something more like Viva Pinata. The uniqueness of running around trying to find different surfaces means that it'll keep young monster-hunters

busy during those rainy days of summer while possibly teaching them something about Chemis-try in preparation for school in September! Rating: 4/5
