Dear Parents,

On Wednesday night this week we celebrated the success of our sports teams in our annual sports dinner. It was a great night and the success of our sport’s teams this year was notable. Without a doubt 2011 is the best year for sports in the history of the college. With our first Auckland region success and notable wins over our near neighbours Orewa College it was certainly a proud night. As we draw near to the end of Term 3 it is important that learners in Year 11-13 start focusing on the NCEA externals which begin soon after the start of Term 4. For the last five years NCEA certificates can be endorsed with Merit or Excellence. This endorsement is attained by getting 50 credits at Excellence or Merit level. It has been very successful and it is viewed as being one of the major motivations for NCEA. This year there has been another addition in NCEA which I also believe will be very significant. Each subject can be endorsed with Merit or Excellence. A learner needs to get 14 credits at Merit or Excellence in a subject for endorsement. Therefore a learner could get an Excellence certificate for NCEA if they get 50 Excellence credits but they also could get an Excellence in Science and English if they get 14 Excellence credits in each of those subjects. Excellence and Merit endorsements will, I believe, become significant as employees and tertiary providers realise their importance, so please encourage your child to work towards those achievements. Every year learners in Year 13 apply for scholarships to attend University. Already this year two learners, Natasha Rishworth and Eve Bain, have been awarded significant scholarships to attend Victoria University. Our congratulations to these two girls. Yesterday I had a letter from the New Zealand Blood Service about two learners in Year 12, Morgan McSweeney and Chelsea Woodhall. Chelsea and Morgan publicised a recent Blood Collection and hugely increased the amount attained. As the letter from the Blood Service says “On the day targeted we registered 139 potential Donors, from whom we collected 127 units of blood – sufficient to save the lives of up to 381 patients. A magnificent effort, and due in no small way to the enthusiasm and organisational skills of Chelsea and Morgan. For that we applaud them.” Well done to these two learners. The last congratulation is to Eve Bain in Year 13 who won a National History award

titled “Why don’t we remember the Battle of Passchendaele?” This prestigious

award comes with a grant towards University study. Eve’s essay was judged the

most powerful by the judging panel and she will be awarded her prize by the

Minister of Veteran Affairs next month. Well done Eve!

Museum Trip - Year 13 Biology On Sept 20 the Year 13 Biology classes had the opportunity to visit the museum as part of their Patterns of Evolution and Human Evolution NCEA units. They were treated to an experienced educator who toured the Origins section of the museum and challenged them to answer merit and excellence style questions while looking at our various extinct species and fossilized remains. They then had a classroom session with skull examples from our extinct ancient ancestors and focussed on the changes in the skull features that linked in with changes in diet, brain size and cultural evolution. They were even serenaded by a tune on the nose flute replica dating back 40,000 years! Anne Rowlands Head of Science

School Visits Last week our Year 12 & 13 sports leaders were put to the test as they headed out to Whangaparaoa Primary, to run coaching clinics for some of the sports we have at the college. It was a great opportunity for our learner’s to pass on their skills and to share their enthusiasm for sport. For each clinic our leaders set up and supervised a skills station which Year 5 & 6 children worked their way through. After the children had completed all the stations, our leaders organised a mini tournament to allow the students to put their new skills into practice. At the end of each session the children were encouraged to ask any questions they might have about sports or college. The interaction between our students and the local primary school students was inspiring, it showed the ability our leaders have to step up and take charge, while still creating a fun learning environment. With the success of these coaching clinics, we now know this is a practice we want to continue to develop. From seeing the benefits these clinics have for both our leaders and the primary school students, we want to continue to build relationships between Whangaparaoa College and the primary schools. It is our goal to encourage our learner’s leadership skills and we believe that one of the ways to do so is through sports. It is wonderful to see the success these coaching clinics had and we are looking forward to creating more opportunities like this in the future.

Cross Country Auckland Champs was held on 15 September and 5 of our Year 7 & 8 learners who had qualified in the North Harbour Champs in May competed in this event. Qualifiers: Sonja Bain, Amber Ferreira, Rose Peddie, Jacob Galley, Blake Galley. All of our learners ran well and were up against some very strong competitors from all over Auckland, with about 150 in each event. Whangaparaoa College’s best result was from Sonja Bain who finished 4th.

AIMS 2011 Basketball Thrilling, exhilarating and fun are just some of the words that I’d use to describe my week at AIMS. The AIMS tournament is an amazing experience, there’s no chores, and you hang out with your friends all the time and best of all you get to play sport all week! My basketball team had 6 games. We won 3 and lost 3. Some of the games we played were nail bitingly close. Our final match went to 4 overtimes! We finished 12th out of 20 quality teams and along the way learnt some wicked moves. We stayed in cabins at Papamoa campsite, keeping them tidy was a bit hard, but we still had time to drive the camp carts and relax between games. Thank you so much to all the teachers and parents that made our trip possible, especially Mr. Raven, for being an awesome coach and Debbie Challis for being there to support us and help us along the way. AIMS Rugby 7’s 2011. This year’s AIMS 7’s team showed an excellent team spirit and developed a tremendous team culture and work ethic during the trainings leading up to and during the competition week at Greeton Marist in Tauranga. The team was Sandon Lisk, Jack Fuller, Cameron Strydom, Fletcher Corse-Scott, Josh Waretini, Matt Hellesoe, Jacob Galley, Blake Galley, Jacob Hollard, Zane Robertson, Jordan Evans and Caleb Bayley. We ended up losing 6 games, drawing 1 and winning 5, resulting in us coming 26th in the competition which was a creditable result. The highlight for Mr Pocock and I was the excellent comeback win over Bethlehem. We were losing 26 – 7 at half time and ended up winning the game 33 – 26, playing some outstanding 7’s. The team ended up scoring a massive 34 tries and 19 conversions. The top try scorer for the week was Jack Fuller who scored 16 tries. The team played very well and the great news is that 6 players will be back next year to compete again, and I am positive they will benefit from their experiences this year. Calvin Howarth Coach

NETBALL

Saturday 17 September saw the very last two games of netball for the season held at North Harbour Netball. All other teams finished their season last Saturday. Our Year 9 Team 1 and our Premier team played their final in torrential rain which was very challenging, both teams did remarkably well considering the conditions. Year 9/1 came first in their final against Rangitoto College, 22 – 15. Premiers came third against Takapuna Grammar, 28 – 20. Well done to all our teams for a fantastic season of netball for Whangaparaoa College.
