Stagecoach is one of the biggest bus operators in the UK, connecting communities in nearly 100 towns and cities. Our network stretches from Devon in south-west England to Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland. We have major city bus operations in some of the UK’s biggest and best-known conurbations, including Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Hull, Sheffield, Oxford, and Cambridge. As well as local buses, we run inter-city coach and express services in many parts of the country, and contracted operations for local authorities, such as school buses. megabus.com, the UK’s first budget internet-based inter-city coach operator, serves around 40 major locations around the country, carrying two million passengers a year, while our high-quality Oxford Tube product is Europe’s most frequent city-to-city express service. In Scotland, Stagecoach is a joint venture partner in Scottish Citylink, Scotland’s leading provider of express coach services. Each year, its fleet of coaches transports more than three million passengers to more than 200 destinations in Scotland. Stagecoach is investing more money than almost any other UK bus operator in new vehicles as part of our commitment to put passengers first, spending around £60million a year on state-of-the-art low-floor buses that meet the latest tough European emissions standards. Hundreds of thousands of people rely on our services every day to access work, education, healthcare, shopping and leisure opportunities in both rural and urban areas. Stagecoach is also a major employer, providing jobs for around 18,000 people throughout the country. We are working hard to increase the quality, reliability and frequency of bus services to offer car users a realistic transport alternative and help cut congestion. Our commitment to innovation and focus on training and development of our people is helping to drive up the standard of local services. Partnership is also key to improving public transport and we work closely with central government, local authorities and other key agencies. Stagecoach is an award-winning rail operator and is involved in running around a quarter of the passenger network in the UK. We are one of the most dynamic and innovative players in the rail industry, with an excellent reputation for delivering high quality services, and experience of running both commuter and inter-city franchises.

The Group runs the South Western rail franchise, which includes the South West Trains and Island Line networks. South West Trains, the country’s biggest commuter network, centred on London Waterloo, has been run by Stagecoach since 1996. During that time, some £1billion has been spent on replacing the train fleet, 1,000 extra trains are running each week, and £15million has been spent on upgrading stations. Passenger volumes have grown by around 50%, while punctuality and customer satisfaction are now at record levels. Stagecoach has been awarded the franchise through to 2017 and is working hard to build on its success.

Island Line, the UK’s smallest rail network, operates on the Isle of Wight and has received two Government Charter Marks for excellent customer service.

Stagecoach also operates the East Midlands rail franchise, which runs until 31 March 2015. The franchise is a mix of inter-city and regional train services. It includes high-speed long distance services from London St. Pancras to Sheffield, Derby and Nottingham. East Midlands Trains also runs local services between Nottingham and Derby/Lincoln/Cleethorpes/Skegness, between Derby and Crewe/Matlock/and Norwich and Liverpool. The last year and 4 months of the franchise are conditional upon achieving pre-set performance targets.

Our rail business also includes our joint venture, Virgin Rail Group (VRG). Stagecoach has a 49% shareholding in VRG, which runs the West Coast Main Line franchise. The West Coast mainline is the backbone of the UK rail network and is Europe’s heaviest-used mainline. The franchise, which serves around 40 stations, runs until 2012. Virgin has been at the forefront of making train travel easier, better and faster over the last decade, investing £1 billion in a fleet of new high-speed tilting Pendolino trains.

Stagecoach Group continues to evaluate opportunities in both the rail and light rail markets to expand its portfolio.

Stagecoach Group is Britain’s biggest tram operator, running networks in the cities of Sheffield and Manchester.

The Supertram network in Sheffield, a 29km tram system incorporating three routes in the city, is operated on a 27-year concession running until 2024.

A major three-year project is underway to refresh the livery and interiors of the tram fleet, improving comfort and accessibility for passengers, as well as helping to maintain the fleet’s high standard of reliability. Stagecoach’s integrated tram and bus network in Sheffield, which offers joint tram and bus ticketing, has succeeded in attracting more passengers to both modes of transport.

Stagecoach took over responsibility for the Manchester Metrolink tram network in July 2007. The 10-year contract with Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) involves the operation and maintenance of the 37km system and the associated infrastructure.

The contract will include managing a number of special projects sponsored by GMPTE to improve the trams and infrastructure to benefit passengers. Stagecoach Metrolink will also be responsible for operating tram services on the new Metrolink lines to Oldham, Rochdale, Droylsden and Chorlton.
