WHY CATALANO?

Evolution2000 – 20102000 saw the introduction of the Zero collection. A modular & versatile range, the success of Zero transformed the company.

Collaborations with respected designers soon followed, such as Matteo Thun, who signed the Roma and Muse collections, and the Fuksas Studio who helped design the Impronta range.

The architect Carlo Martino also joined the company, as artistic Director and head of Catalano’s Corporate Design Center.

Origins1967 – 2000Founded in 1967 by a small group of skilled individuals, Catalano took its name from an area near Civita Castellana, a town not far from Viterbo, now known as ‘Italy’s ceramic district’.

Current CEO Mario Rossi joined the newly formed company as a young man. He soon started to envision a different company; environmentally responsible, able to invest in quality, innovative, and with an attention to design and customer care.

OUR STORY

2010 – PresentA passion for quality and a desire to make a sustainable product, led Catalano to invest significantly in the manufacturing process in 2010. The introduction of high pressure casting, advanced automation & digital technology, has helped Catalano become one of the most iconic & technologically advanced ceramic producers in the world today, able to produce in such a way as to increase quality whilst reducing energy consumption.

Legacy & Looking to the FutureA ‘Think Green’ ethos, encompassing not only the manufacturing process, but also sustainability of the product itself with the innovative Cataglaze+ treatment, and the award winning Newflush WC’s. In recognition of their work, 2016 saw Mario Rossi & Catalano awarded with the Aldo Villa award for outstanding contribution to the development of the ceramic industry in Italy and Worldwide.

Industry 4.0 The first of its kind in the world of sanitaryware manufacturing, Catalano operates a fully digital production facility from product conception, to manufacturing, logistics and packaging.

This allows for ultra-efficient manufacturing at every step, leading to reduced wastage and less energy consumption due to the increased ability to monitor factory performance.

Advanced AutomationThe use of advanced automation throughout the production process enables Catalano to produce ceramic to a higher quality than traditional methods of production.

Because of this we are able to produce thinner, stronger and larger pieces of ceramic than ever before, pushing the boundaries of design and performance, ensuring the product you receive not only looks great, but lasts a lifetime.

Attention to DetailThe importance of raw material in ceramic production can be likened to a chef cooking with the best ingredients: The better the ingredients, the better the final product.

Catalano has created a careful blend of kaolin, minerals & fire clay, completely unique to them and responsibly sourced from only the best quarries around the world. Starting with our first class raw materials, we then monitor the production process through every single step, so that the Catalano ceramic which reaches your home is of the absolute highest quality.

THE ART OF CERAMIC

Sustainable ManufacturingIn the world we live today, great importance is placed on the need to produce sustainable products that are kind to the environment, but will also stand the test of time. A product which looks great for 1-2 years before its gradual deterioration in either quality or style, leads to wastage, and is therefore not sustainable.

One could also argue that there is no benefit in creating a sustainable product if the manufacturing process behind it generates a giant carbon footprint and a mountain of waste.

It is with these two viewpoints in mind that Catalano has been quietly revolutionising traditional methods of ceramic production; We have quite literally been Thinking Green.

In an industry renowned for its low product yields, which leads to high waste levels and intensive energy usage (especially during the use of intermittent kilns), Catalano leads the way from its state of the art manufacturing facility in Fabrica di Roma where all of its ceramic is produced.

Catalano operates a ‘Life Cycle Design’ or LCD production process, not dissimilar to the ‘cradle to cradle’ manufacturing concept modelled on natures lifecycle of waste being seen as nutrients, utilising waste by putting it back into the cycle to be reused.

A fully digital 4.0 facility from product conception, to manufacturing, to logistics and packaging, allows for efficient manufacturing at every step, leading to reduced wastage and less energy consumption due to the increased ability to monitor factory performance.

Sustainable Product Starting with the raw materials... Catalano is committed to sourcing raw materials of the highest quality; a unique blend created in Catalano’s in house laboratory. This helps reduce the risk of product defects which lead to wastage during the production process.

Waste is recycled at every stage of the production cycle. The use of a closed loop wastewater recycling system, where water is purified and recycled, dramatically reduces water usage. Even the use of single material and recyclable packaging is stringently controlled.

An onsite solar power plant generates 25% of the energy used for production, with plans to increase this to 50% in the near future. Recycling of heat from the kiln, which is one of the largest, most energy efficient tunnel kilns in use in Europe, helps reduce energy consumption throughout the rest of the factory. This has led to a 30% reduction in pollutant emissions and 50% savings in heat usage.

Ceramic by nature is an excellent eco material. A natural raw material mix of clays, minerals and Kaolin, it is hygienic, long lasting, non-toxic and recyclable.

With Cataglaze+, Catalano has dramatically improved upon this foundation. A technologically advanced, innovative glaze, Cataglaze+ makes the product easier to clean, eliminating the need for abrasive chemicals and cleaners which are harmful to the environment. In fact, Catalano suggests just one, eco-friendly cleaning method: Soapy water.

Cataglaze+ is also a lifetime treatment, blended into the ceramic at 1250 degrees, making the glaze unalterable and resistant to deterioration over time, ensuring a long product lifespan. A true Eco Solution.

EPDITALY0075

EPD is a certified environmental product declaration. With the EPD certification, Catalano substantiates the environmental performance of its products, calculated according to the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) study that defines the consumption of resources (materials, water, energy) and the impacts on the environment.

Our commitment and reseach on our product lifecycle, on energy saving, the installation of several photovoltaic systems, water recovery, heat recovery, control and reduction of emissions into the atmosphere, demonstrates Catalano’s efficiency and respect for the environment.

Our Cataglaze+ treatment makes Catalano ceramic the exception.

With Cataglaze+ as standard, Catalano ceramic is made to be ageless.

Under a microscope, ceramic looks like a mountain range; Deep crevices line the surface. Over time, these crevices fill with microscopic particles of dirt and grime, lessening the surface brightness, leaving it dull and lifeless.

Our unique Cataglaze+ treatment almost completely smooths out the ceramic. No more crevices for dirt to cling to, making our ceramic more resistant to limescale, easier to clean with a superior smooth brightness.

Easy to clean satin finish

The glaze developed by Catalano makes the satin finish easy to clean to guarantee maximum hygiene, unlike satin finishes provided by other manufacturers.

Unique colour

Catalano R&D has developed these new colours in-house, so they are exclusive and different from others available in the market provided by external suppliers.

High temperature single firing

To guarantee Catalano's signature quality, the coloured products go through a single firing at high temperature 1250° which gives them the same strength and durability properties of the Cataglaze+ gloss finish. This delivers a significant difference in quality compared to the current methods of firing, which usually require a second firing at a lower temperature (800°).

Combination of colours

New colours can be combined to suit the taste and needs of the end user and the creativity of designers. Washbasins and WCs with different finishes can be mixed and matched to create a unique look.

Thermal shock resistance

After the glazing phase, each Catalano satin product is tested for thermal shock resistance through three continuous cycles of progressive thermal shock, with temperatures ranging from 110° to 180°.

Resistance to chemicals

To test the resistance against chemical agents, glazed satin products are dipped in hydrochloric acid 5% solution and then in a sodium hydroxide 5% aqueous solution.
