Today we celebrate the success of the students from the School of Continuing and Professional Education, City University Hong Kong, at our annual awards ceremony. I am delighted to welcome you to these celebrations because they are always a time of joy and pleasure.
Not only are the academic standards of our two institutions very high, our partnership is blessed with talented staff who teach ambitious students. Our staff and students are committed to achieving the best outcomes from an excellent educational experience.
Your qualification today is a testament to the energy, dedication and commitment that both your teachers and you as students have shown as you have worked together to succeed academically. You should be proud of your achievement and you should celebrate today with all those who have helped you along the way. You will never forget your award ceremony, or how hard you have worked to get here today!

University of Central Lancashire Our History
Our University has existed since 1992, but our roots go back much further. In fact, we’ve been transforming lives for nearly two centuries now. Our story began with the founding of the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge, our distant predecessor, in 1828, which brought life-changing learning to the people of Preston.
Over the years that followed we evolved into The Harris Institute (1882-1956), Harris College (1956-1973), Preston Polytechnic (1973-1984), Lancashire Polytechnic (1984-1992) and eventually the University of Central Lancashire (1992 onwards).
A lot has changed in 192 years. Today we’re an international, multi-campus university leading the way in modern learning and bringing the life-changing benefits of a university education to people all over the world.
We’ve built successful partnerships with many other institutions all over the world, including in China, Korea and Malaysia. Our thriving community of around 38,000 students and staff is made up of over 100 nationalities, while our global alumni network numbers
more than 180,000 people. In 2012 we became the first university to establish an overseas campus in Cyprus.
We’re proud to offer all our students a teaching and learning experience with a truly global outlook. We enable them to expand their horizons through opportunities to study overseas, immerse themselves in other cultures and acquire advanced skills and knowledge which will enable them to succeed in today’s globalised economy. By combining academic excellence with real-world teaching, we give them the skills and experience that industry need. That’s why our talented graduates are in such high demand across the world.
Many of our academics are internationally recognised experts. In 2017 Caroline Watkins, Professor of Stroke Care, was honoured by The Queen when she was awarded a damehood for her contribution to improving treatments for stroke patients. Lubaina Himid, Professor of Contemporary Art, won the prestigious Turner Prize in 2017. These are just two examples of our many acclaimed academics whose work is having a huge impact on the world.
We believe in helping people to seize every opportunity to flourish in education, at work and for life. Thousands of our graduates have told us that their time as a student at the University of Central Lancashire changed their lives and opened doors to careers they had always dreamed of.

Introduction of CityU SCOPEThe School of Continuing and Professional Education of City University of Hong Kong (CityU SCOPE, the School) has been a pioneer and major provider of quality professional and life-long education for professional practice, retraining and self-development to align with community needs as well as social and technological changes. Those who are keen to upgrade and improve themselves, regardless of their learning needs, will find that CityU SCOPE’s quality programmes facilitate their progression along the qualifications ladder.
Since 1992, the School has established partnerships with non-local universities to offer globally competitive programmes to nurture all-rounded graduates through well-articulated curriculum with strong emphasis on professional competence. Over the years, we have over 32,000 bachelor’s degree graduates, and the majority of them are now making significant contributions to various sectors of society.
This year, the School continues to offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes leading to non-local awards in various disciplines. The nine three-year non-local degree programmes and 18 non-local top-up degree programmes offered by CityU SCOPE have been successfully accredited by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ). The accredited status has not only assured the quality of these programmes but also the eligibility of our full-time students to apply for government grants and loans and to participate in relevant government internship and scholarship schemes. The academic qualifications of these programmes are also recognised by the Government of the HKSAR for civil service appointment.
We pride ourselves on the diversity of our programmes and the good standard of our graduates. With the concerted efforts of the dedicated and experienced teaching team of CityU SCOPE, together with our overseas partners, we will continue to provide you with an engaging and rewarding learning experience.
