This award is given to a professional in higher education who has displayed exceptional passion and spirit and made significant contributions to the

Fraternity movement.

Larry D. Philippi, Bowling Green ’76 / Delta Beta Xi ’85, served as a Chapter Consultant for Alpha Sigma Phi Headquarters from 1978–1979 and served on the Grand Council in 1992. He was the Founder of the Northeast Panhellenic

Conference in 1981, and the Executive Director of the Northeast Interfraternity Conference from 1981–1982. He orchestrated the merger of the Northeast

Interfraternity Conference (NEIFC) and the Northeast Panhellenic Conference (NEPC), which would later become the Northeast Greek Leadership

Association (NGLA). Brother Philippi was an executive board member for the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors from 1981–1982. The Larry

Philippi Award was originally established by NGLA and was given to a Fraternity Professional each year until 2005. The Fraternity adopted the

award that year.

In 2019, the Larry D. Philippi Award of Distinction was renamed the Philippi-Hughes Award of Distinction to honor Byron A. Hughes, Ph.D., Salisbury ’06 / Delta Beta Xi ’13. On a professional level, Brother Hughes served as the

Fraternity/Sorority Advisor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University from 2011-2018. Within the Old Gal, Brother Hughes has served as the

Grand Chapter Advisor for the Delta Upsilon Chapter at Virginia Tech from 2008-present and on the Grand Council from 2010-2018. He received the

Otto L. Sonder Chapter Advisor of the Year Award in 2009 and was recognized by the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors with the Sue Kraft Fussell

Distinguished Service Award in 2019.

This award is given annually to a chapter or provisional chapter advisor who displays exceptional passion, commitment, and drive in support of a chapter or provisional chapter during a given year. Created in 2006 at the 49th Grand Chapter, the award recognizes those alumni who have helped to advance the

vision and purpose of the Fraternity at a chapter level.

Otto Louis Sonder, American ’47 / Delta Beta Xi ’67 was awarded the Evin C. Varner, Jr. Distinguished Service Award in 1996. He served as faculty advisor of the Alpha Gamma Upsilon Fraternity at Lycoming College and is credited

with orchestrating the merger between Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity and Alpha Gamma Upsilon Fraternity. He served as the Gamma Rho Grand Chapter Advisor at Lycoming College from 1961–1974, then served as the Beta Xi

Grand Chapter Advisor at Hartwick College from 1974–2006. Brother Sonder gave more than 45 years of service to the “Old Gal” before entering the Omega

Chapter in 2010.

This award is presented for sustained alumni service to the Fraternity, generally for more than ten years. While potential criteria for the award are as varied as

our brotherhood, general criteria include years of service, type of service, and significant achievements.

In 1938, the special award of Delta Beta Xi was created by the Grand Council to honor those men who have given outstanding service to the Fraternity; one

hundred brothers were selected when the award was created. In each subsequent year, up to ten men may be selected to receive the Delta Beta Xi Award.

This unusual and single honor recalls the period from 1864 to 1875 when members of Delta Beta Xi secretly pledged their allegiance to Alpha Sigma Phi.

Their courage kept the traditions of the Fraternity alive despite a faculty ban on the organization.

This award is the Fraternity’s highest alumni award and is presented to a previous Delta Beta Xi recipient for sustained superior alumni service to the

Fraternity, above and beyond Delta Beta Xi. While potential criteria for the award is as varied as our brotherhood, general criteria include years of service,

type of service, and significant achievements. The award was established as the Distinguished Service Award by the Grand Council in 1959.

Evin C. Varner, Jr., Presbyterian ’58 / Delta Beta Xi ’76, was also initiated into the Beta Mu and Beta Zeta Chapters and served in many roles for the Fraternity. Varner was also Editor of The Tomahawk from 1974–1985 and the creator, author, and editor of the membership manual, to Better the

Man in 1976. He also served as President of the College Fraternity Editors Association, Grand Marshal, Grand Secretary, Grand Junior President, and

Grand Senior President. Varner was awarded the Distinguished Service Award in 1985.

In 1985, the Distinguished Service Award was renamed in his honor. A brother who exemplified the values of Alpha Sigma Phi through his continual and

untiring contributions toward the overall success of the Fraternity, Brother Varner entered the Omega Chapter in 1985.

This award is given annually to an undergraduate Brother in recognition of contributions exemplifying the purpose and objective of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. This award is the highest recognition an undergraduate brother can receive. The award was created by

the Grand Council in 1977.

Frank Foli Hargear, California ’16 / Delta Beta Xi ’39, served on the Grand Council as Grand Secretary 1937–1940, as Grand Marshal 1950–1958, was the originator of the

Delta Beta Xi Award for distinguished service to the Fraternity, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award in 1965. Brother Hargear entered the Omega Chapter

in 1982.

This award is given annually to an alumnus who has devoted their lifetime to Alpha Sigma Phi and made considerable contributions to the Old Gal.

Brother Thurston served as Chapter President, Interfraternity Council President, Grand Councilor, Grand Treasurer, Grand Junior President, Grand Senior President, Chairman of the Foundation, Member of the Board of Advisors, and on the Phi Alumni Association

and House Corporation. Brother Thurston was inducted into Delta Beta Xi in 1977, and was awarded the 2000 Evin C. Varner Distinguished Service Award and the 2007

Distinguished Merit Award.

The Victor B. Scott Award is awarded annually to the chapter whose academic grade point average most greatly exceeds its College or University’s all men’s average. Brother Victor Scott presented the scholarship plaque for the purpose of ‘creating an incentive on the part of each chapter of the Fraternity to strive for higher average in scholarship on the campus on which the chapter was located.’ After the merger with Alpha Sigma Phi, an

award was named in his honor for outstanding chapter scholarship.

Brother Victor Scott, a member of the National Council and Counselor of the Phi Pi Phi Fraternity, was born in Chicago on May 23, 1882. He entered the Law School of the

University of Michigan in 1906 and graduated in 1909. Brother Scott established the first motion picture theater at Ann Arbor. After graduation, Brother Scott came to Chicago and began the practice of law, later becoming a partner of the law firm of Meads and Scott. This partnership still continues, with offices now in the new Burnham Building, 160 N. LaSalle Street, Chicago. In 2018, Grand Historian Emeritus Robert Kutz established an

endowment to allow for this award to once again be bestowed.
