D rip Irrigation in spite of potential and
promotional efforts, has not caught on India.
Farmers still look up to monsoon rains for their
sustenance. The small size of the farms imposes
design constraint and small farmers find drip
irrigation expensive because of high energy costs.
Yet this has not deterred Mr. Hitesh Patel to
venture into the business of manufacturing drip irrigation systems.
A graduate in agriculture he forayed into manufacture of drip and
sprinkler systems in 1994.
Hailing from a farming family, 45-year-old Mr. Patel, gained much
experience in selling irrigation systems as a commission agent for a
Kolkata based firm. After completing studies he expanded his selling
activity in Janagadh, Gondal and Jamnagar and was eminently
successful. The success spurred him to start his own manufacturing
unit.
He is supreme confident that the day is not far-off when India could
become the world’s top drip irrigation arena, a position enjoyed by
Israel today.
Twenty years on Paragon Synthetic and Polymers Limited at
Vadodara not only produce drip and sprinkler irrigation systems
but has also diversified as a plastic processing group manufacturing
and marketing HDPE pipes, PVC pipes and fittings. The enterprise

Captain Tractors Pvt. Ltd.
Failure is the First Step Towards SuccessBest MSME Award 2012 for Quality and Environment Measures — Small Entreprise
The small and marginal farmers are usually reticent to own a
tractor mainly because owning them is a costly proposition. But
a revolutionary mini-tractor manufactured by a Veraval firm is
changing the scenario. Gujarat farmers are now giving thumbs up
for tractors.
This change has been brought about by Captain Tractors Pvt. Ltd.,
established in 1994 by the visionary farmer brothers
Mr. G. T. Patel and Mr. M. T. Patel, hailing from Rajkot. They innovated
and developed a Mini Tractor that was affordable and which
performed their useful chores everyday.
The mini tractor was the result of four years of rigorous efforts. With

an exclusive basis. This is a sort of marriage of Tafe’s expertise and

Techno Instruments
Success is a Journey to Elevate OneselfBest MSME Award 2012 for Innovation in Technology — Micro Entreprise
In the mid-nineties, three fresh graduates who
had began their career as assemblers of
temperature sensors equipment took a big step
forward to become manufacturers a cross section
of devices for temperature measurements. Their
decision led to the founding of Techno
Instruments to one stop solution for industrial
customers as well as laboratories.
The trio – Mr. Bhavesh Parikh, Mr. Daxes Shah and Mr. Abijit Gohil –
has steered Techno Instruments as one of the top notch enterprises
in the business of Thermometry, which is quite simply the science
and practice of temperature measurement.
The different equipment is called Temperature Sensors. They are
critical to industries which involve processes that generate heat and
constantly provide temperature feed about the processes. Whether
it is a plastic product or a car, or making of medical products, or
textile drying, failure to maintain process temperature could result
in poor product quality. Temperature sensors. The sensors ensure
stability and repeatability and help to measure the temperate after
heating and cooling cycles.
Since its inception Techno instruments has customized thousands
of sensors according to customer specifications. It builds sensors
from start to finish, manufactures its own sensing elements,
machines its own cases and assemble the finished parts. This

ensures complete control of product quality plus flexibility in
designing its products.
Their efforts have yielded great results. Techno Instruments is
registering an awesome annual growth rate of 30%. It is now a
registered vendor with GAIL, the Tata group, Indian Rails, Aditya Birla
group and many more. The Finnish major ABB has selected Techno
as a global supplier.
Mr. Abijit Gohil, the prime mover behind Techno Instruments defines
success as a journey not destination. It can be described as a
journey to elevate one-self.
According to him the five key elements for starting and running a
successful business are:
A dream to achieve some goal, Be passionate about one’s targets.
Be receptive to new ideas. Observe and analyze the world around
one self and Build a dependable Team.
24 Gujarat – Entrepreneurial Excellence of MSMEs
Mr. Parikh says his father is his greatest inspiration who consistently
encouraged him to see the world from a different perspective and
take up difficult tasks as a challenge.
He narrates how they came to promote Techno. He along with
Daxesh Shah decided to start a business to survive. Mr. Bhavesh
Parikh who was employed in a multi-national decided to join their
venture too.
Techno encountered many failures and the lesson from these was
that one should not run away from failure. Rather reasons for failure
should be analyzed and attempts must be made again till one
succeeded.
He had no specific advice to school and college students who want
to become entrepreneurs. But every human has to work to survive.
So it is one’s choice when to work. Whether work till 35 years or

second option is like farming where one keeps working hard.

Agriland Bio-technology Limited
Success is Consistent Work andWhat Best We Deliver to Customers
Best MSME Award 2012 for Innovation in Technology — Small Entreprise
“Our Best is Yet to Come” is the distinct
refrain of Agriland Bio-technology
Limited, a company based in Vadodara. It is a
simple but ringing message that the company is
delivering best products and is on the path to
deliver still better products in the future.
The refrain is a testimony to the fact the company
intends to draw on exciting innovations that have
given birth to new manufacturing technologies
for producing plant protection products. One such
innovation is the Surface technology, an
environmentally robust technology that is relied
upon for producing items like biopesticides which
enable farmers in achieving precision agriculture.
Agriland Bio-tech is one of MSME’s chosen for the Government of
Gujarat Awards for Best MSMEs for the year 2012.

masters in agriculture, the technology ensures production of
products with longer shelf-life, higher potency and results in better
field efficacies as compared to similar biological products.
High potency plant protection products are like a second big jackpot
to Indian farmers after the Green revolution. In simple terms the
Surface Manufacturing Technology carries a promise that each rupee
spent for plant protection is rewarded with good return.

Mukesh J. Patel
26 Gujarat – Entrepreneurial Excellence of MSMEs
This is evident from the fact the company is clocking a growth rate
of 15% to 30% every year and 20% of the output is being exported.
To Mr. Manguika and Mr. Patel, success is what best we deliver and
contribute to the lives of our customers. For achieving long term
success, we should continuously endeavor to do consistent work,
carry out product innovation along with team building, team aligning
and customer services.
According to them the five key elements for starting and running a
successful business are:
1. Aspiring ambition for financial strength, creating net worth and
contributing all worth to customers, employees and the society
2. Cultivating moderate to high risk bearing capacity
3. Commitment to the people around us and , commitment to self
4. Hard, consistent and smart work.
5. Imbue decision making power and be determined to find
solutions even in worst case scenarios.
They stress that there is no ready-made formula to become a
successful entrepreneur but a pattern can be evolved by solving
problems.
To the technocrat promoters the biggest motivating factors are two:
The needs of the customers. People who have achieved resounding
success in their endeavours.
On successful form of marketing, they are of the view that it is not a
single form of market but a bowl of many components that really
work for the developing market like India. Besides the conventional
dealer-distributor network system, the direct contact with farmers
helps in promotion of their products.

On experiencing failure: Failures are bound to be with almost all
the businesses. We succeeded in the first attempt but experienced
failures too with marginal impacts. They however taught us to
overcome fear by continuing our entrepreneurial journey by adopting
