PROJEct SuMMaRy: Water from the Kurnell desalination plant will reach up to 1.5 million people. Sydney Water has designed the plant so it can be quickly upgraded to twice its size, delivering 30% of Sydney’s water supply needs if necessary.

aWMa designed, manufactured, installed and commissioned over 72 water control penstocks and stopboards, up to 4m x 4m in size. the super duplex stainless steel control gates were manufactured to the highest specifications including hydrostatic testing to over 200 tonnes.

PROJEct SuMMaRy: the 43m high tallowa Dam is an integral part of the Sydney catchment authority’s Shoalhaven Scheme and is essential to the bulk raw water supply system for Greater Sydney. this project involved the design and installation of an innovative fishlift system. Project accolades include australian Institute of Project Management nSW chapter Excellence award in the Sustainable Projects category.

Principal contractor, Leighton contractors engaged aWMa to develop a number of unique flow control structures for the dam and fishway. control structures included a positive cable drive on an 8m high overshot gate on the surface water draw off chamber, a hydraulically actuated spillway gate that was cut into the existing dam crest, and a segmented gate for the fishway entrance.

PROJEct SuMMaRy: Wide Bay Water corporation covers new ground to provide outstanding water quality. the incorporation of innovative processes produces water of such high standards that it may be considered as a supplementary water source in the future.

aWMa were engaged by contractor Bellero constructions to design and manufacture over 20 stainless steel penstocks. In order to accommodate the deep tanks required in the plant design, a number of aWMa penstocks were manufactured as modular structures to be assembled on-site.

aWMa were engaged by principle contractor Hudson civil to suppy uLF penstocks of up to 3m wide with an 8m headstock. the design specifications for this project required higher than normal engineering due to its risk profile.

PROJEct SuMMaRy: Perths second desalination plant will produce 50 billion litres (gigalitres) of drinking water annually with a capacity to expand to 100 gigalitres per year. the Southern Seawater alliance comprises of tecnicas Reunidas, valoriza agua, aJ Lucas, WorleyParsons and the Water corporation.aWMa designed and manufactured modular structures to isolate the plant from the seawater tunnel. the gates measure over 6m high x 2.8m wide and have been hydrostatically tested to withstand 1.5 times the required 80 tonne of head pressure. the inlet gates are manufactured from grade 2507 super duplex stainless steel for a 100 year design life.

PROJEct SuMMaRy: the Bendeela Pipeline control Structure is an integral part of the Shoalhaven water supply and power generation scheme. the control structure isolates the Bendeela Pipeline from water contained in the Bendeela Pondage, protecting the Bendeela Power/Pumping Station from flood events and allowing internal pipeline inspections and maintenance.

the stopboards and ancillary equipment (lifting frame and storage racks) provide double isolation. When isolating the Bendeela Pipeline during maintenance, four of the stopboards are fitted on top of each other, into the existing concrete chambers. the 4m x 2m top sealing stopboard segments provide complete sealing against a water depth of 16m. venting of the internal chamber to prevent a vacuum was provided via flexible pipe connected to the surface.

PROJEct SuMMaRy: MIL is australia’s largerst privately owned irrigation scheme. the MIL Mechanisation project was the first major program within australian irrigation authorities to meet OH&S, water accountability and efficiency requirements.

aWMa has design, manufactured, installed and commissioned approximatly 2,500 water control gates with associated automation, across over 1,000 sites within the Murray Irrigation District in a staged program over five years.

PROJEct SuMMaRy: Located 30km north-west of Griffith nSW and spanning 3,200 hectares, the Barren Box Storage and Wetland (BBSW) project is one of the largest water infrastructure projects in regional australia specifically instigated to return water to the environment. the project was awarded the prestigious Environment and Heritage award at the Sydney 2006 Engineering Excellence awards.

Murrumbidgee Irrigation engaged aWMa to custom design 32 control gates across eight sites. Inlet and Outlet Structures, Regulators, a cross Structure and an Offtake were designed, manufactured, installed and interfaced by aWMa into the water authority’s existing ScaDa system.

PROJEct SuMMaRy: the alkimos Wastewater Scheme is essential to the growth and development of Perth’s north west corridor. the new plant will service this area and reduce pressure on existing wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations. Built over a period of three years, the entire scheme totalling $366 million will ultimately benefit an estimated 800,000 people.

Multiplex Macmahon Zublin Joint venture awarded aWMa the contract to manufacture penstocks and stopboards for control and isolation of flow within waterworks channels. a portable actuator was also supplied to allow manual and automated operation of the penstocks.

PROJEct SuMMaRy: Glenelg Hopkins catchment Management authority, GWMWater, Bell Environmental, Earth-tech and aWMa partnered to construct a new water management structure for fish containment and the accurate delivery of environmental flows.

Progressive works have seen the design, manufacture and installation of manual and automated flow control structures for australia’s first carp management system. Improved infrastructure not only assists the containment of carp within Rocklands Reservoir, but ensures larger volumes of water can be passed into the Glenelg River for environmental flows.

PROJEct SuMMaRy: the north Head StP is the fourth largest sewage treatment plant in australia. upgrade works will ensure improved plant performance and reliability.

Over 50 control gates were designed, manufactured and installed for the Sydney plant. Industry first specifications required the research and development of new design options. Investigations were required both on and off site in an effort to meet the challenging design criteria.

PROJEct SuMMaRy: Pheasants nest Weir and Broughton’s Pass are critical infrastructure in Sca’s upper nepean Water Harvesting System.

aWMa partnered christie civil and the Sca on this environmental project incorporating flow management and fish passage works south west of Sydney. aWMa designed and supplied a range of hydraulically actuated stainless steel gates including a sidewinder, v-notch penstock, overshots, undershots and a downwards opening penstock 5.2m wide.

PROJEct SuMMaRy: the Eastern treatment Plant in Bangholme victoria, treats about 40% of Melbourne’s water. the plant, which was built in 1975, is in the process of being transformed into one of the most sophisticated facilities of its kind in the world.

Over the past five years aWMa have worked with contractors including the John Holland Group, tenix alliance, StaPS alliance and the Eastern tertiary alliance on many staged upgrade programs to supply approximately 200 custom designed control structures. aWMa penstocks, segmented stopboards, stoplogs and specialised odour control gates all contribute to the operation of the EtP.

PROJEct SuMMaRy: State Water owns, maintains, manages and operates major infrastructure to deliver bulk water to approximately 6,300 licensed water users on nSW’s regulated rivers along with associated environmental flows. aWMa have partnered with State Water on the majority of their infrastructure projects over the past decade.

aWMa partnered Gleesons Excavations to supply State Water with flow control structures for the colligen creek Weir and Fishway. Works included a LayFlat gate and undershots, to be operated via electric actuation systems. the LayFlat gate included an extra high headstock to accommodate flood conditions.

PROJEct SuMMaRy: the nSP will increase the capacity of the sewerage system for Melbourne’s growing northern suburbs and help protect local creeks by virtually eliminating sewage spills that can occur after heavy rain.

aWMa’s unique capacity to deliver innovative designs using grade 2507 stainless steel resulted in a custom manufactured top sealing penstock for the nSP. the penstock is required to operate in an unventilated sewer main and will be subjected to a highly corrosive and aggressive environment. the on-seating design is required to seal against a 12m head pressure and operate under an electric actuation system.

PROJEct SuMMaRy: this project demonstrates SunWater’s commitment to safety as they make a state-wide investment in their water supply schemes to protect staff and the general public.

aWMa were responsible for the design, manufacture and installation of over 300 water control gates, walkways, hand rails, trash racks, safety screens and pit covers along approx 2000km of channel systems. aWMa’s open platform designs allow for easy conversion to automated channel control, if required at a later date.

aWMa were engaged by the thiess Degrémont Joint venture to design, manufacture, supply and commission over 100 flow control structures with associated lifting mechanisms and storage solutions. Installation of flow control structures was supervised by aWMa to ensure product integrity and effectiveness. top sealing segmented stopboards isolating the main inlet tunnel are 4m wide x 8m high, designed to withstand over 11 tonne of head pressure.
