HUA HIN, THAILAND The recent announcement that Kan Air had been ordered to suspend more than half of its network due to licensing issues has caused some confusion for Hua Hin based travellers, as initial reports failed to mention the recently started flights between Hua Hin and U-Tapao (Pattaya) which we reported on in May (Issue 329), although the flights between Hua Hin and Chiang Mai which began in August last year are definitely not affected. We spoke to Kan Air to establish what the current situation is, and they confirmed that the service is not running now, but that it will resume once the licensing issues have been resolved. At the heart of the issue is that the operating licence issued for the suspended routes was for charter operations, whereas these were actually operating in a scheduled nature, with online and over the counter ticket sales for a fixed schedule. According to the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) to qualify for a charter flight permit, Kan Air would need to sell tickets on a wholesale basis and not through retail distribution channels. A number of airlines have launched and then cancelled routes out of Hua Hin Airport over the last few years, and while official announcements rarely give the reason, it has mostly been assumed that the services were not profitable; the list includes the original operators of the airport, Bangkok Air, who flew to Bangkok and Ko Samui, Nok Air (Bangkok), Thai Lion Air (Hat Yai), and the only international route that has been attempted with Berjaya Air’s flights to Subang Airport in Selangor, Malaysia. There have also been long running stories that Firefly will start services to and from Penang but firm plans have never materialised. Only time will tell, but for now flying to or from Hua Hin remains a rare pastime. GET RACING FROM ONLY 400 BAHT! TauruS apr 21 – May 21While you admire his technical

execution and admit he had a nice gimmick going, you have no idea who Michelangelo’s target market was supposed to be.

GeMini May 22 – June 21You can’t shake the feeling there

has to be more to life than “seductively unzip the jacket, primly zip up the jacket” all week long.

CanCer Jun 22 – Jul 22You’ve read the instructions on

how it’s made, talked to people who claim to have made it, even seen videos of people making it, but you can’t shake the feeling that when it comes to toast the toaster does all the work.

LeO Jul 23 – aug 22You’ll be shunned at work when

you go from indifference toward Whitney Houston’s death to bursting into tears over her in a disturbingly short time.

VirGO aug 23 – Sep 22You’ll receive hundreds of

unsolicited estimates from eager housepainters when you mention your love of Jackson Pollock while walking past a Home Depot.

LiBra Sep 23 – Oct 23Your short but remarkable career

as the Serge Gainsbourg of country music will end Thursday as disgustingly as it began.

SCOrPiO Oct 24 – nov 21You’re as envious of the moneyed

classes as you are disgusted by their distance from and disregard for everyday life, but you’re still no F. Scott Fitzgerald.

SaGiTTariuS nov 22 – Dec 21Just as you’re coming to terms

with the challenges and rewards of living alone, you begin to suspect someone else is still alive out there in the radio active rubble.

CaPriCOrn Dec 22 - Jan 19Sometimes you feel like the whole

world is spinning, spinning, spinning at a dizzying rate, causing the passage of day and night as well as fearsome Coriolis winds in the tropical regions.

aquariuS Jan 20 – Feb 18When future biographers address

your astoundingly large body of poetic work they’ll just skip right past it, partly because it’s fairly complex stuff but mostly because they’re writing your biography as punishment.

PiSCeS Feb 19 – Mar 20You’re the kind of boring person

doomed to be alone while trying to solve all the problems instead of hanging out with the cool people wh0 assign blame.

arieS Mar 21 - apr 20Your health continues to decline

apologies for last week’s incomplete english Corner - we reprint the full text this week, so in keeping with this section, last week we waned, this week we are waxing! This week it is..... Wax poeticSpeak in an increasingly enthusiastic and poetic manner.’Waxing poetic’ has nothing to do with bees, candles, or polishing cars. The verb ‘to wax’ is ‘to grow’; the opposite of ‘to wane’, which is ‘to decrease’. Grow and decrease have largely superseded the archaic terms wax and wane in almost all modern usages, apart from the waxing and waning of the moon. The other remaining contemporary uses of ‘wax’ with the meaning of ‘grow’, survive in various expressions like ‘wax poetic’ and ‘wax lyrical’. These are often explained as deriving from the imagery of the waxing of the moon. in fact, the word is extremely ancient and was used to mean grow in many contexts prior to it being used to describe the monthly increase in size of the visible moon. King alfred, in the translation of Pope Gregory’s Pastoral Care, which he commissioned in aD 897, used the Old english version of the word - ‘weaxan’.There are numerous examples of the use of ‘wax’, meaning ‘grow’, in mediaeval texts; for example, The Geneva Bible, 1560, in Deuteronomy 32:15:“But he that shulde haue bene vpright, when he waxed fat, spurned with his hele.”[the 1611 version has it in more modern english as “Jesurun waxed fat, and kicked.”]it isn’t until much later that ‘wax’ began to be used to refer to flowery and poetic speech or writing. This occurs in various phrases, like ‘wax lyrical’, ‘wax poetic’ and ‘wax eloquent’. Of these, it is ‘wax poetic’ that is still most commonly used. ‘Wax eloquent’ was the first of this group of phrases to be used to describe someone becoming increasingly expansive and expressive in speech. That dates from the early 19th century, for

example, this piece from Bracebridge hall, a collection of essays and literary sketches by Washington irving, 1824:“The whole country is covered with manufacturing towns... a region of fire; reeking with coal-pits, and furnaces, and smelting-houses, vomiting forth flames and smoke.” The squire is apt to wax eloquent on such themes.ironically, far from ‘waxing eloquent’, irving was suffering from writer’s block in 1824, following a family bereavement, and struggled to finish enough essays as to be worth publishing.‘Waxing poetic’ came next. The first example that can be found in print is in Sir henry Morton Stanley’s how i Found Livingstone, 1872:“One could almost wax poetic, but we will keep such ambitious ideas for a future day.”Stanley seems to have been an enthusiastic waxer. his book also contains “i waxed indignant”, “Farquhar and Shaw waxed too wroth”, “i accordingly waxed courageous” - all at a time when he reports that the sun “waxed hotter and hotter”. it would be remiss to leave out a Marx Brothers gag at this point. Groucho Marx’s role as Professor quincy adams Wagstaff in the 1932 film horse Feathers yielded this gem:Wagstaff’s Receptionist: The Dean is furious! He’s waxing wroth!Prof. Wagstaff: Is Roth out there, too? Tell Roth to wax the Dean for awhile.‘Wax lyrical’ followed in the early 20th century; for example, Gilbert Cannan’s translation of Jean-Christophe in Paris, 1911:“He had the genius of taste except at certain moments when the Massenet slumbering in the heart of every Frenchman awoke and waxed lyrical.”Time for me to wane lyrical and stop.

a.a.a.D.D. recently, a women was diagnosed with a.a.a.D.D. age activated attention Deficit Disorder. This is how it manifests: i decide to water my flower tubs.as i turn on the hose i look over at my car and decide it needs washing.i go to get the car keys from the porch and then notice mail on the porch table.i decide to go through the mail before i wash the car.i lay my car keys on the table, put the junk mail in the bin under the table and notice that the bin is full. So, i decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the rubbish first. But then i think, i can run down to the post-box when i take out the rubbish i may as well pay the bills first. i take my check book off the table, and see that there is only 1 check left. My extra checks are in the computer desk, so i go inside the house to my desk where i find the can of soda i’d been drinking. i’m going to look for my checks, but first i need to push the soda aside so that i don’t accidentally knock it over. The soda is getting warm, and i decide to put it in the fridge to keep it cold. as i head toward the kitchen with the soda, a vase of flowers on the window ledge catches my eye--they need water.i put the soda on the window ledge and discover my reading glasses that i’ve been searching for all morning. i decide i better put them back on my computer desk, but first i’m going to water the flowers. i set the glasses back down on the window ledge, fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote. Someone has left it on the kitchen table. i realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, i’ll be looking for the remote, but i won’t remember that it’s on the kitchen table, so i decide to put it back in the living room where it belongs, but first i’ll water the flowers. i pour some water in the flowers, but

some spills on the floor. So, i set the remote back on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then, i head down the hall trying to remember what i was planning to do.at the end of the day:- The tubs aren’t watered;- The car isn’t washed;- The bills aren’t paid;- There is a warm can of soda sitting on the window ledge;- The flowers don’t have enough water;- There is still only 1 check in my check book;- i can’t find the remote;- i can’t find my glasses;- i have absolutely nO idea what i did with the car keys. Then, when i try to work out why nothing got done today. i’m really baffled because i know i was busy all the darn day, and i’m really tired. i realize this is a serious problem, and i’ll try to get some help for it, but first i’ll check my e-mail. Don’t laugh -- if this isn’t you yet, your day is coming!

DrunKi got home from the pub last night and my wife said, “i can’t believe how intoxicated you are.”Denying it i said, “i’m not drunk.”She said, “Yes you are.”i said, “no i am not.”She said, “Can you tell the time?”i walked up to the clock and said, “i aM nOT DrunK.”

SunnY DaYMy wife shouted upstairs, “The sun’s just come out.”i thought great, threw on some shorts and flip flops and shot down the stairs.i was rather shocked when i got down to find our lad holding hands with his mate Michael.

Do you like to cook?is cooking your hobby? is cooking a passion?

come and join us in our newHua Hin Hobby cooking Members group

The cooking sessions are once a month. Each member has a chance to host the group in their home and make dinner for them. There are no guidelines as far as what to cook, as long as the meal is homemade and they provide the recipes. Costs are shared and each member brings their

own drinks. My idea was to regularly gather people who have the same passion; cooking. As there are many nationalities it will be exciting to discover new food cultures and to share recipes. A cooking group is also a social event; cooking together is fun and is an opportunity to make new friends. You do not need to be a chef in order to join the group. Whatever your level of cooking is, most important is that you like cooking, are open to new ideas and are prepared to participate regularly at the members’ cooking sessions. If you are interested in receiving more information you

WinDOW LiCKerSSuffering from road subsidence? Don’t worry. it will just be due to surface erosion. nothing at all to do with the foundations, subsoil or drought, and anyway the highways Department will have it fixed in a week.My apologies for that small outburst but i feel much better for it. now back to reality, and all things internet. The time has finally come when a replacement computer just can’t wait any longer. The decision has already been put off several times, because with iT you just never know what all singing all dancing new product will hit the shelves next. But the diagnosis of a flaky hard drive was impossible to ignore, so this week i am trying out something called a ‘raspberry Pi’. One of those widgets that plugs into the TV, turning the TV into a computer screen which is simply operated by a separate keyboard. On the plus side it is a very cost effective alternative to a laptop, and much easier on the eyes than a netbook. On the minus side i will have to drop the habit of keeping one eye on TV programmes while using the computer. But for someone who is short of space, isn’t bothered about Skype, and doesn’t even use the disc drawer these days, (having discovered how to rip CDs using the DVD player) the raspberry Pi looks promising.quite how i will explain it to friends though is another matter. Some of them still haven’t got their heads around the fact that people can be linked to the big wide world without Windows. a handful even still think that you can’t possibly have an internet connection without a telephone landline.i blame Bill Gates for much of the Windows brainwashing/clever marketing, and hulls’ independent provider of telephones, Kingston Communications, for the rest. More on ‘KC’ as it is known another week. as for Windows, it is still almost the only operating system to be found on regular computers stocked by most major uK retailers, along with predominantly apple for small touch screens. even in the more specialist gadget shops,

where you will of course also find all things apple and Windows, requests for any other operating system draw blank looks, and so far uK wise only one major retailer, Tesco, has to my knowledge produced its’ own brand of android tablet, the hudl.no doubt such limited high Street marketing worked fine back in the days when people were buying their first computers, and operating systems were more limited. now though anyone who is online can of course shop on line for the newer products which the shop windows don’t seem to like, and usually find them at much more competitive prices too.But back to my Windowless Wifi existence.i ditched both Windows and the landline three years ago, had a Linux operating system installed on the already flaky hard drive, and - apart from the current little glitch - haven’t looked back.Of course there will be people who still swear by Windows, just as there are many who get along fine with apple Macs, but there are also increasing numbers dabbling with androids, along with 5 million raspberry Pi users. it’s just that very few of them seem to live in hull.Which is even more strange when you realise that scientists at hull university have, and still do, play a huge part in refining LCD technology and making it commercially viable. it was the universitys’ Professor George Gray who, in 1973, published his findings on a new type of liquid crystal which could be easily stabilised at room temperature, and the university continues to lead the way in the development of ‘next generation’ LCD technology, with the development of OLeD’s - Organic Light emitting Diodes.

Word of the week is ‘cotyledon’, which refers to the first leaf produced by a germinating seed.

Liverpool remain keen on Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, 24, but are still refusing to pay the £32m asking price - despite selling Raheem Sterling to Manchester City for £49m on Tuesday. (Mirror) Manchester United are ready to cut their losses on winger Angel Di Maria by selling the Argentine to Paris St-Germain for £42.8m. United spent £59.7m on the 27-year-old last summer. (Le Parisien via Star) Arsenal have made a £10m bid for Napoli defender Faouzi Ghoulam, with the 24-year-old being lined up to challenge Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal for a spot at left-back. (Mediaset via Talksport) Costa Rica striker Joel Campbell could be leaving the Gunners for good with former Manchester United boss David Moyes ready to spend £6m to bring the 23-year-old to Real Sociedad in Spain. (Mirror) Chelsea are confident of beating both Arsenal and Liverpool to the signing of Barcelona forward Pedro after meeting a £22m release fee in the 27-year-old’s contract. (Daily Star) Southampton are close to replacing Morgan Schneiderlin - who has joined Manchester United - with Feyenoord midfielder Jordy Clasie. The 24-year-old Netherlands international will cost £12m. (Daily Mail) New Everton signing Tom Cleverley, 25, hopes that his move from Manchester United to Goodison Park will help restart his England career. Cleverley last won a cap in November 2013. (Liverpool Echo) Cleverley’s team-mate at Everton, James McCarthy, is a target for Manchester City after they missed out on Aston Villa’s Fabian Delph. (Express) West Ham are ready to pay £9m to bring Mexico striker Javier Hernandez, 27, to Upton Park from Manchester United. (Metro)

Paris St-Germain’s Uruguay international striker Edinson Cavani, 28, is the “prime target” to replace Fenerbahce-bound Robin van Persie, 31, at Manchester United. (Talksport) Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski, 26, is at the top of Manchester United’s attacking targets as manager Louis van Gaal prepares to take his summer spending to more than £300m. (Daily Telegraph) Manchester City will attempt to push their summer spending towards the £100m mark this week by securing the signing of Wolfsburg’s 24-year-old Belgium midfielder Kevin de Bruyne. (Daily Telegraph) Ajax are in discussions with Arsenal about a season-long loan move for 22-year-old French striker Yaya Sanogo. (Daily Mail) Tottenham want £9m-rated Marseille striker Michy Batshuayi, 21, to play alongside Harry Kane next season. (Daily Mirror) Crystal Palace are attempting to sign QPR goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, 25, who has a relegation clause of about £3.5m in his contract. (Times) Dynamo Kiev midfielder Jeremain Lens, 27, is in talks with Sunderland. The Dutchman played under Black Cats boss Dick Advocaat at AZ Alkmaar and PSV Eindhoven. (Guardian) The inclusion of Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea, 24, in their squad for the pre-season tour to the United States has ruled out an imminent move to Real Madrid for the Spaniard. (Independent) Newcastle are interested in Tottenham winger Andros Townsend, 23. Sunderland and Aston Villa are also bidding for the England international. (Daily Star) Newcastle boss Steve McClaren will not confirm whether he is trying to sign QPR’s 26-year-old striker Charlie Austin. (Chronicle)

enGLanDLiverpool striker Raheem Sterling has joined the ranks at Manchester City, with him claiming to be relishing the chance to fight for a place on the bench at the City of Manchester stadium.Sterling appeared to have a golden chance to cement his place as a regular starter for Liverpool when Luis Suarez departed and Daniel Sturridge got a long term injury last summer, but instead decided he would be better off being a prima donna and having a spat with manager Brendan Rodgers. However, with his move to Manchester now confirmed, Sterling has spoken of his delight at the challenge that lies ahead. He told reporters, “City are a massive club, and they’re challenging for lots of trophies,

so I want to be a part of that by hopefully making a couple of match day squads before Christmas.”“I have to be realistic, so a few Carling cup run outs would be nice, too.”“It’s OK though, my new contract isn’t appearance or goal related – my agent

is pretty good at negotiations, just ask Liverpool.”Sterling took his medical in Manchester last weekend, as well as getting fitted for his bench seat.A club insider said, “It’s ergonomic and moulded to your body shape. We like our match-day subs to be comfortable.”“That said, we’ve already told him he’ll have to earn his place on the bench – we’ll keep the seat in storage until he makes the squad, probably some time in the new year when the injuries and suspensions start to hit.”“Still, it’s another Englishman for our quota, so he can clean the toilets for all we care.”
