Description:
More and more SAP customers leverage AWS to run key SAP software solutions, such as SAP Business Suite, SAP All in One, and SAP HANA, now certified in production, on the highly elastic, stable, low cost AWS Cloud without having to make long-term commitments or costly capital expenditures for their underlying infrastructure. Please join us for this webinar, where AWS will provide an overview on the technical capabilities and benefits of the AWS cloud infrastructure services that we offer and how to deploy SAP solutions certified for production on the AWS Cloud. We will highlight several customer success stories, provide technical guidance on deployment and implementation of these solutions on AWS, review the AWS pricing model, and how to engage with AWS or an AWS partner on next steps.

SAP Deployment Options

Some SAP solutions are available as pre-

built system images on Amazon EC2. A

pre-built SAP system image contains a

pre-installed and pre-configured SAP

solution that enables you to provision a

new SAP system by simply launching an

Amazon EC2 instance from the

system image.

Pre-built SAP system images are

available from the following sources:

• AWS Marketplace

• SAP Trial Systems

• SAP Developer Images

• SAP Cloud Appliance Library

Primary option for deploying SAP applications on

Amazon EC2 is the standard SAP installation

procedure for the particular SAP solution.

The process to install an SAP solution on an

Amazon EC2 instance is very similar to the

process for any other physical or virtual

server.

SAP Support and Monitoring

In order to ensure full support of SAP solutions on AWS you must follow the guidelines

in SAP note # 1656250

To enable the built-in SAP monitors to retrieve information about configuration and

resource utilization from the underlying AWS infrastructure the following tasks must be

completed:

AWS CloudWatch Detailed Monitoring must be enabled on each Amazon EC2 instance to

ensure that the required AWS metrics are provided in one-minute intervals.

AWS Data Provider for SAP must be installed, configured and running on each Amazon

EC2 instance. The AWS Data Provider collects the required performance and configuration

data from a variety of sources including the Amazon EC2 API, Amazon EC2 Instance

Metadata Service and AWS CloudWatch.

Page 48: AWS Webcast - Implementing SAP Solutions on the AWS Cloud

services

VPC to Internet via Customer Datacenter

Page 49: AWS Webcast - Implementing SAP Solutions on the AWS Cloud

SAP Sizing on AWS

Sizing of SAP systems on AWS uses the standard SAP sizing procedure.

Information about SAP sizing can be found at

http://service.sap.com/sizing

The first step of any SAP sizing is to use the Use the SAP Quick Sizer to

determine the SAPS needed to support your business requirements.

Once the required SAPS are determines you can then use the SAPS

ratings of the SAP-certified Amazon EC2 instance types listed in SAP note

# 1656099 to architect you SAP environment on AWS.

Page 50: AWS Webcast - Implementing SAP Solutions on the AWS Cloud

Default Hostnames

The default behavior of an AWS Instance is to generate a new hostname at

the time an Instance is launched from an AMI and when an Instance is

stopped/started. This behavior is not appropriate for an SAP system and

can be disabled by following the steps provided below…

Windows 1. Start -> Programs ->

EC2ConfigService Settings

2. On the General tab, deselect “Set

Computer Name”

SUSE 1. Start yast

2. Navigate to Network Devices ->

Network Settings (press enter)

3. Select Hostname/DNS in the

menu

4. Change the values of the

Hostname and Domain Name

fields as required

5. Uncheck “Change Hostname via

DHCP”

6. F10 (to save)

7. F9 (to exit)

Red Hat 1. Edit file /etc/sysconfig/network

2. Change parameter HOSTNAME

and replace value with the new

hostname

3. Restart OS

For additional information about the allowed hostname length and characters see SAP Note #611361.

Page 51: AWS Webcast - Implementing SAP Solutions on the AWS Cloud

SAP Hardware Keys on EC2

SAP hardware key generation on EC2 instances is dependent on a

specific SAP kernel patch level. The required SAP kernel patch

levels can be found in SAP note #1697114

Before generating a license for a given “hardware ID” you

should insure that the SAP kernel is at the required patch

level.

If a license key is generated before patching the SAP

kernel then the hardware key could change making the

installed license invalid.

Page 52: AWS Webcast - Implementing SAP Solutions on the AWS Cloud

Instance I/O Performance

Each Amazon EC2 instance type provides a certain level of I/O performance. The

type of SAP system and its I/O performance requirements will determine which EC2

instance type should be used.

Like standard instances Cluster

Compute instances us a shared

interface for network and I/O

throughput. Cluster Compute

instances have very high I/O

performance using 10 Gigabit

Ethernet.

Cluster Compute Instances EBS-Optimized Instances

Certain standard instance types are

available as EBS-Optimized

instances. An EBS-Optimized

instance uses an optimized

configuration stack and provides

additional, dedicated capacity for

EBS I/O.

Standard Instances

Standard Amazon EC2 instances

types use a shared interface for

network and I/O throughput.

To ensure optimal I/O performance for SAP production systems, either

EBS-Optimized or Cluster Compute instance types should be used.

Page 53: AWS Webcast - Implementing SAP Solutions on the AWS Cloud

Sample EBS layout for Medium to Large SAP PRD / QAS DB server

For SAP production systems and other SAP system types that require high I/O

performance it is recommend to use Provisioned IOPS EBS volumes.

Standard EBS volumes are well suited for SAP test, demo, POC type systems.

Page 54: AWS Webcast - Implementing SAP Solutions on the AWS Cloud

Migrating an Existing SAP system to AWS

The standard SAP homogeneous / heterogeneous system copy procedure is the

recommended method to migrate an existing SAP system to AWS.

The high level steps to migrate an SAP system to AWS are:

1. Create export of the source system using Software Provisioning Manager

2. Copy or ship the export / DB backup data to AWS

3. Install new target system on Amazon EC2 using export of the source system

Two options to copy data to AWS:

Network Copy – For systems less than 1 TB. Consider acceleration utilities like

Tsunami UDP

AWS Import/Export – For systems greater than 1 TB

Page 55: AWS Webcast - Implementing SAP Solutions on the AWS Cloud

SAP Support Connection - SAProuter on AWS

When setting up a SAProuter on AWS and SAP support network

connection the following guidelines should be followed:

1. The instance that the SAProuter software will be installed on should be

launched into a public subnet of a VPC and should be assigned an

Elastic IP Address (EIP)

2. A specific Security Group should be created for the SAProuter instance

with the necessary rules to allow the required inbound and outbound

access to the SAP support network

3. The type of Internet connection that should be used is Secure

Network Communication (SNC), see

https://service.sap.com/internetconnection
