In the midst of one of the most significant downpours of rain anyone in Sachse can remember, the Annual Meeting of the Sachse Historical Society was held on Sunday, March 19, 2006. The business portion of the meeting was held in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home. President Jeff Haupt conducted an auction of an officially authenticated brick from William Sachse’s home. Mrs. Dorothy Nixon, a great- granddaughter of William Sachse, captured that brick for $100. President Jeff Haupt continued to conduct the meeting up to the election of officers and board members. Jeff has served as president for four years, and has led the Historical Society through the remodeling process of the new museum. It seemed a long time in coming, and now the Historical Society is able to consider hours of operation for visitors, and continue to move forward to additional projects. Jeff has put in countless hours for the Historical Society, and will continue to serve as Vice President. Karen Reed was elected President. Karen has served on the Board of Directors for two years prior to this position. Karen has been part of the construction committee for the museum remodeling, she writes for the newsletter, and participates in the Sachse Historical Society booth at Sachse’s annual FallFest. The guest speaker at the 2006 Annual Meeting was Sachse Police Chief Richard Benedict. Mr. Benedict was a police officer when the current Museum was Sachse’s police station. It was a treat to hear him describe the years of Sachse’s recent history, and how the town— particularly police activities—has matured. Often humorous, always pleasant and professional, Chief Benedict shows what an asset to the community he is. -photo by Charlene Haupt From Left, President elect Karen Reed presents to Mrs. Dorothy Nixon the His- torical Society framed Certificate of Au- thenticity for the brick as President Jeff Haupt holds Mrs. Nixon prize brick. -photo by Charlene Haupt Transition as Outgoing President Jeff Haupt congratulates Incoming President Karen Reed. -photo by Charlene Haupt Our guest speaker Police Chief Richard Benedict engaged us with his story telling about how our Museum used to be the Sachse jail with bared cells and once some- how the key got misplaced to one of the occupied cells. Change always seems to come even though so many of us hate it. Thismonth you will be having a new editor. Sue Dillard has done a terrific jobas editor, but she has now chosen to pursue cataloging and researching ofthe artifacts coming into the Sachse Historical Society. Imagine that! Weare getting so many artifacts that someone has to do the job of inventorying, describing, and possibly even trying to figure out what they are! As far asyour new editor is concerned, I will do my best to keep you up to date witheverything happening with the Society, refreshing your memory with someof the history of Sachse and the people whoplayed such a big part in the rich and im-pressive history of this growing city ofSachse. I would also like to bring you someof the history of the Pleasant Valley side ofSachse. I was the historian and editor of thenewsletter for the little white, Texas prairietype church at Merritt Rd. and Pleasant Val-ley. Even though the Pleasant ValleyMethodist Church was established in 1863,it was not until November of 1990 that from the vast J. E. Newman land inthe most westernly southern corner the 2.49 acres of land on which thechurch was situated became annexed into the city of Sachse under MayorLarry Holden and afforded all of the city privileges that Sachse citizens re-ceived.

Your Board of Directors has worked hard to bring you to this point in timewhen we have a newly renovated building with showcases for all of the his-torical articles. There is still much to be done with the grounds. The city hasbrought in the large farm equipment, but we still need a place for the greatold Sachse fire engine. It will not be too long before the Society Museum isopen for the Sachse folks to browse and discover their history. For now, wecan accommodate those interested in looking around by appointment. Onthe third Saturday morning of each month when the Board of Directorsmeet, the Museum will be open.

REMINDER!!!!

YOUR DUES ARE PART OFWHAT THE SACHSE HISTORICAL

SOCIETY USES FOROPERATING EXPENSES

So if you have not paid yet for this

year, consider doing so soon.

The members andguests of the HistoricalSociety adjourned tothe Museum itself, where refreshmentswere served in theconference room, andthe display room wasopened up for the firsttime to the public. Itwas fine to see manyhours of effort come tofruition, and hear thestories of several ofSachse’s citizens asthey viewed the histor-ical items displayedthere.

Arizona Street is featured this month in theStreets of Sachse. Arizona runs parallel to Highway78, north of Salmon and south of Williford. Thereis a Clinton Street that is connected to Arizona, andshould have been mentioned in the last article inthis series that featured Dewitt Street named afterDewitt Clinton Sachse, third son of WilliamSachse.

Arizona Emily Sachse was the first daughter born toWilliam Sachse. She was born on September 11,1859, and died September 21, 1881. She marriedJoseph S. Billingsly, and they had two children:James Clement and Birdie. She died when her chil-dren were two and four years old. There is beauti-ful picture of her in Sachse Remembered, 1840-1940, available at the Sachse Historical Society.

There was another Arizona, also: a granddaughterof William Sachse. Missouri Ann Sachse (daughterof William, sister of Arizona) and William WorleyIngram had 13 children, and they named one oftheir daughters Arizona. Arizona Ingram marriedRobert Leon Yarbrough, and they had 10 children,31 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. Letus not forget the pioneers that went before us andfounded our community. The Streets of Sachse re-mind us.
