Last week saw a fantastic showcase of Ayr High talent and academic success with both our Cultural and Academic Award's ceremonies being held on Tuesday and Thursday respectively. On Tuesday evening it was great to see our Concert Band and Choir perform with great enthusiasm! They sounded great and it was a treat for everyone as our performing arts ensembles have been very limited in performance opportunities in 2020. Congratulations to all our award winners on the night. On Thursday we had to split our Academic Awards into two sittings to be able to meet COVID-19 restrictions. It was a fantastic evening as we rewarded students for their high level academic achievements in front of the Ayr High Family. Once again, congratulations to all award winners on the night. On Academic Awards evening we also announced the newly chosen 2021 Student Executive. Next year’s student executive will comprise of JD Wilkins and Giselle Le Feuvre as School Captains, Sam Vaevae Pare and Brianna Whittred as School Vice Captains, Jasyti Tallis as Indigenous Vice Captain, Connor Brown as

Sport Vice Captain, Lauren Raitelli as Cultural Vice Captain and Chelsea Ravizza as Community Service Vice Captain. I congratulate these students and feel they will create a great team to lead our school in 2021. I am also very proud to say there were almost an equal number of applicants who unfortunately missed out on a position, who were also at a very high standard. This demonstrates the depth of leadership we have in the students at Ayr High and I’m sure these students will also form a big part of helping our school move forward in 2021.This week, the Year 12 external examinations began with English on Monday morning. I am very pleased to say that our students are progressing very well through their exams. This is due in no uncertain terms to the work the students and teachers have put in to prepare for these exams. As well as this, I want to highlight the effort the teachers are putting in to support their students throughout the three week exam period. Whilst many schools decided to ‘farewell’ students prior to the exam period, Ayr High has maintained its commitment to our students, offering revision sessions

for each subject, access to school resources and facilities to ensure our students stay connected and supported throughout the entire period. On Tuesday evening this week, I met with a team of six students, six parents and six staff members to work with me on the final draft of our new four year strategic plan. It was a very productive evening with some great discussion that will feed into the endorsed four year strategic plan and set a pathway for our school’s improvement journey over the next four years.Term 4 continues to be very busy with senior graduation celebrations and a range of assessments across all year levels. So let’s all keep busy and focused on the tasks ahead so we can finish 2020 in the best fashion.Yours in education

Famed tenor Luciano Pavarotti once remarked, “Music is the most joyful activity possible, the most perfect expression of any emotion.” This was aptly demonstrated by Ayr High’s Cultural Awards Evening. Sponsored by the Music Support Group and hosted by Cultural Captain Kalypso Karagkiozis, the night was a celebration of our students’ expression in the performing and visual arts. The evening’s program reflected our students’ continued commitment to the performing arts. Despite the spectre of the pandemic and the cancellation of almost every event on the cultural calendar, our students had continued practising, rehearsing and excelling, culminating in a night that was a celebration of both their talent and resilience.Jack Shaw opened the evening with a stirring rendition of I Don’t Know You Yet by Alexander 24. The concert band ensemble followed with the upbeat Come Go With Me, before the choir took to the stage and performed what can only be described as a simply breathtaking performance. The choir’s vocal arrangement and angelic delivery of Pink’s Barbies followed by You Will Be Found by Dear Evan Hansen brought tears to the eyes of many.Jessica Calligaro, on behalf of the Visual Arts department, presented a snapshot of the creativity and excellence evident across both the junior and senior school. Then, our senior Drama students combined multiple dramatic forms in their performance of Bald Heads and Blue Skies, before Clara Hutton commanded the stage with her powerful monologue. The brass quartet followed, lightening the mood with a musical tribute to Star Wars. All too soon, however, the night drew to a close. With awards conferred and speeches given, the only thing left to do was bid adieu to 2020 - and start planning for a spectacular 2021! From the Visual Arts by Mrs Lynda Hoey, Art Teacher

Through the year, all visual art students have addressed the responses of society, culture and contemporary influences in our world. The Cultural Awards recognises all visual arts students who challenged typical ideas and responses through a range of media; drawing, painting, sculpture and installation. The Cultural Awards event highlighted the importance of creativity being fostered in students to achieve lifelong learning outcomes through a visual collage presented on the night. In the senior school, both Visual Arts in Practice and Visual Art students operated at multiple depths of understanding by processing complex issues such as ongoing historical impacts on society, the complex nature of issues around the roles of women, contemporary women and art practice, local culture and landscapes; and even the issue of different types of impact COVID-19 has had on the social fabric of society and families. This kaleidoscope of colour and expression recognises and congratulates all students who participated in a wonderful evening. Special mention to Jessica Calligaro who compiled the presentation for the night.

From the Deputy Principal (Junior Secondary)by Ms Anna D'Ilario, Deputy Principal

Can it really be that week 4 is upon us? In the space of a few short weeks, we have had a flurry of events where our students have outdone themselves. Our Awards Evenings celebrated the achievements of so many of our wonderful students and I am pleased that, despite the challenges we faced in light of current restrictions, we were still able to hold these events and acknowledge the students’ ongoing commitment to their personal best. Yes, we had to change a few things (I think both Mr Flynn and myself may have sprouted a few grey hairs in the process!), but we were able to adapt and overcome - and that is what the awards are really about; in the face of some pretty daunting challenges, our students have continued to “strive for better things” and done their best. Our Year 12 students are currently bearing testimony to the school motto as they strive to achieve their personal best in external exams - we wish you all the very best of luck!!Our school motto of “Meliora Sequimur” was also evident on the weekend when several of our students attended the State Honours Ensemble Program in Townsville and did our school proud. It was pleasing to see several junior school students selected for this prestigious program, especially when some of them had only started learning their instrument this year! Great job, guys! This week, we also hosted the final transition day for the year with East Ayr State School’s Year 5 students visiting. The students had a blast and made good use of their Year 7 mentors. Thank you to everyone involved, especially our Year 7 students who were great ambassadors and to Ms Schonenberg. As we move into assessment mode, I encourage all students to continue doing their personal best, and I look forward to lots of students attending Big Day Out.

    State Honours Ensemble Program Townsville

by Sophie Robertson, Year 7 Student with input from Zylon Dallecort, Year 7 Student

From 22 to 25 October, Zylon Dallecort, Lucas Donovan, Sarah O’Shea, Jye Ravizza and I attended the State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) in Townsville. Zylon, Sarah and Lucas were all a part of the vocal ensemble while Jye and I were a part of the wind ensemble. The wind ensemble was made up of 60 musicians while the vocal ensemble was made up of 58 singers. There were students from all over the district, some even coming from Mount Isa to participate in this wonderful program. The program was run by Griffith University and was held at Ryan Catholic College. This amazing opportunity allowed us to develop our sense of musicality and artistry even further, making it a very worthwhile experience. The program began on Friday at 4.00 pm and went until 7.00 pm. This was when we were introduced to our conductors, Mr Timothy Sherlock who was in charge of the vocal ensemble and Mrs Rachel Howley who was in charge of the wind ensemble. We were also introduced to our pieces which were from a wide range of musical genres. All ensembles got straight into practising these difficult pieces. On Saturday, we all woke for an early start because we had to be up at Townsville by 8.45 am. Throughout the day, we worked in detail on our repertoire and learnt new and exciting things. The wind ensemble learnt about how they should convey emotion to the audience through the art of music. They also learnt how to play slow music, which was challenging for many. On the other hand, the vocal ensemble learnt how to sing songs from a range of genres. The practice finished at 3.00 pm, with all of us walking away with valuable knowledge. On Sunday, it was another early start because we also had to be up in Townsville again by 8.45 am. During this practice, we all polished up our pieces and prepared for the grand concert at 1.00 pm. Unfortunately, only one parent could attend the concert because of COVID-19. However, we were all relieved that the concert and the program could go ahead. At 1.00 pm the concert began with the string ensemble starting off with a bang. The harmonious music they played was heaven to the ears as they all played expertly and with precision. Before we knew it, the choir performed, singing Sukura, Arirang, Riff City, I am Anne and Friend Like Me. All these songs were beautifully performed as each and every choir member sung their heart out. Finally, it was the wind ensemble’s turn. For me, to say it was a thrilling experience playing at the concert is an understatement. It was amazing! We played How to Train Your Dragon, This is Berk, Afterburn, Camel Train and As Twilight Falls. The music which came out of every instrument was stunning as we nailed all the dynamics and notes. Overall, this experience was awesome, and we have all walked away with something irreplaceable. We would like to thank Mr Phillips and Mrs Wall for nominating us for the program and giving us the opportunity to learn so much. We would also like to thank Ms D’llario, the office staff and the Music Support Group for providing us with information and their support.

I'm Outta Here Workshopby Cassandra, School Based Youth Health Nurse

On Monday 12 October, Ayr High held the Leaving School: ‘I’m Outta Here’ workshop. The night is designed to open up discussion and communication about the factors that influence the transition from school to life after school. Eleven past students returned on the night to share their personal experiences with the current Year 12 students about their journey since leaving school. They offered survival tips and reinforced the message that there are a variety of pathways you can travel to get to your final destination. A very big thank you to Franka Hicks, Shenikah Grabbs, Ben Bozzetto, Keagan Flynn, Jack O’Keefe, Brendan Kolb, Kacee Bromham, Aletheia Pacey, Ky Whittred, Mitchell Pearce and Hayden Menso for taking the time to join us on the night.

    World Mental Health Day

by Cassandra, School Based Youth Health Nurse

World Mental Health Day is a day of global health education, awareness and advocacy. It reminds people to take time for themselves, look out for those around them and also aims to reduce the stigma associated with mental health conditions. 2020 has been an exceptionally challenging year with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now more than ever, it is so important to take time to acknowledge if you are ok, check in with those around you and know how to access support if needed. Ayr High acknowledged this important event on Monday 12 October. The students and staff wore odd socks to represent that anyone can have an odd day. There were different activities played throughout the lunch break to raise awareness about the importance of taking time for mental health.

Year 11 Leadership Campby Miss Irima Vee, Year 11 Coordinator

After a year of COVID-19 restrictions and event cancellations, the Year 11 Leadership Camp was up in the air too. Nevertheless, after several weeks of umming and ahhing our prayers were answered and camp was confirmed as Kinchant Education Centre increased the number of students allowed to attend. A surprise to the Year 11 students and a much needed get away for the cohort experiencing an important and unique year in their schooling journey. After unpacking, setting up our tents and safety briefings, the fun began. While those who would hold our safety in their hands undertook belay training and experienced those harnesses for the first time, the rest of us settled into camp and awaiting our first round of activities. With the kick off of the first round of activities, The Simpsons proved that thinking outside the box pays off as they tackled the wet team challenge, both The Kardashians and The Marvels faced their fears of heights on the g-swing and on the high ropes, proving that team work and support is paramount. The first afternoon walk down to the dam was deemed an interesting experience as many braved the weeds in the shallow parts and enjoyed the afternoon swim. Unfortunately Thomas, throwing his whole body into skidding along the water, was taken out by a stone to the knee and spent most of the first night at hospital with Jared and Mr Pickersgill… possibly a record broken here on fastest person to hospital on a school camp. The night’s activities of low ropes and Mr Ballin's infamous sock warfare proved a winner for the students with many showing their brutal might with some heavy hits from Eliza, Ben and many others, not to mention some skilled tackles from Jasyti. Ultimately, Kaydee and Colby took out the number one spots. The following morning the catchy sounds of Wham Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go echoed through the grounds as Mr Pickersgill woke up students and staff for their morning walk. The second day was yet another adventure packed day with groups working their way through canoeing, the high ropes, g-swing, abseiling and the wet team challenge. Again, another day saw students working as a team and supporting each other through challenging tasks. The Simpsons again showing key communication and team work on the high ropes. The Kardashians in the canoes was a hilarious sight showing that sometimes team work doesn’t make the dream work, but they made it in the end. The Marvels showed their competitive and strategic side with boys vs girls running the gauntlet in the wet team challenge with Mrs Vollema-Creek and Miss Vee helping the girls… trying to anyway. Our last day saw the school houses go head to head in the Survivor Challenge. Once war cries were created and chanted on their way to the starting point the challenge began. Many thought that Banks and Cook would be at a disadvantage as smaller teams, however, this at times proved the opposite. The challenges tested resilience, communication, leadership and teamwork amongst the House Family classes and saw the successful finding of each key lost out in the wilderness. Though Banks started off on the back foot behind in the first challenge, with strong teamwork and amazing attention to detail they won the well-deserved prize making it to base in first place, shortly followed by Cook, Macquarie in third and Phillip in fourth.

To finish off the night the camp talent show took place, whereby students faced the challenge of showcasing their amazing skills. Singing, dancing, catwalk poses, some great (and not so great) ukulele and recorder playing was shown by a very talented Year 11 cohort, entertaining all until we made our way to a camp fire with toasted marshmallows.A big thank you to all staff who attended camp, you were a huge support throughout - Mr Pickersgill, Mr Ballin, Mrs Vollema-Creek, Cassandra and Mrs Favero. All in all, the Year 11’s represented Ayr SHS with pride. Though exhausting and challenging at times the camp was a rewarding and bonding experience for all students and staff involved, and I can say with confidence that Ayr SHS will be led by an amazing strong cohort next year!

Visual Art in Focusby Mrs Lynda Hoey, Art Teacher

Year 11 and 12 Students, Jessica Calligaro, Shannon Cowper, Monica Kupke, Demi O’Shea and Eliza McMullen, celebrated their final pieces for 2020 in a display of informed artwork in the Resource Centre. The students completed months of intensive researching, experimenting, creating and justifying their visual art practice, then curated their work to present to family, friends and teachers. Students addressed topics of women’s issues, complex historical issues regarding early labour in the sugar industry, role changes in society for both men and women, marked boundaries and their personal significance and how conversation is lost through technology.Shannon opened the evening by acknowledging the traditional owners of the land which held great significance in the development of the display. Each student presented a 3 minute speech and answered questions from the audience about their work. These art pieces displayed a full cycle of learning and responding from the conception of an idea to the finale of curated works. The stylised invitation to the event was developed and skilfully created by Monica Kupke.Mr Whittred congratulated the students on their outstanding effort and praised the works of the Visual Arts team for their constant and vital commitment to arts education at Ayr State High School. I would like to acknowledge the consistent and dedicated commitment of all the students who gained excellent recognition and rewards from this visual art experience.

    Inaugural JCU Heroes in Health

Programby Mrs Sarah Matthews, Guidance Officer

James Cook University and the Mater Private Hospital, Townsville, invited students from around the region to participate in the inaugural JCU Heroes in Health Program on the 21 and 22 October 2020. Twenty students in Year 11 and 12 from Townsville, Ingham, Ayr and Charters Towers were able to explore Medical, Nursing and Allied Health careers. Congratulations Ashley Green and Sarah McDonnell for earning a place in the program!

The program was about taking students behind-the-scenes so they could see what it’s really like to work in the health care industry and what’s involved with being a health care professional. The jammed packed two-day program included interactive sessions with Doctors, Allied Health, Nursing, Dieticians, Orderly Services and Pharmacy professionals as well as tours of the Hospital and Pathology Lab. Students got to try their hand at taking vitals, CPR, blood loss estimation, hand hygiene and simulate different scenarios on interactive mannequins. They learnt about individual health services, but also how important it is for all healthcare professionals to work together.

Students also had the opportunity to speak directly with JCU current students, Industry Professionals and JCU Academics to be inspired about their health career journey and open their eyes to other health career ideas they previously didn’t know about.

How To Manage Online Friendships It’s been a tough year for friendships given homeschooling, social distancing, not interacting in big groups and all the other weirdness…There has definitely been an increase in friendship problems at school due to miscommunication via social media and text. I am so glad that we are all putting our phones in the box during class times to help us concentrate on our school work. However, I am sure after a period of time having them constantly it would have been hard to let them go again. Communicating largely through written text can be a bit tricky sometimes. It can be difficult to explain your tone through words and misunderstandings can arise. Sometimes the best thing is to just hash things out in an actual verbal conversation. However, with online communication now a part of everyone’s lives, here are some handy ways to help manage your friendships.Don’t panic if someone doesn’t respond straight awaySometimes you may think if someone hasn’t responded to your message straight away that they’re ignoring you. Or perhaps if they just get back with a few short words they’re angry. However, that’s not always the case, so it’s important not to jump to conclusions. There may actually be something deeper going on, or they could just be busy! That’s why it’s important to check in and connect with your friends regularly online so you get to know their pattern of response.Keep the connection goingTalk to your friends and find out how often you should be touching base online. It’s a good idea to schedule time in with a friend and have it recurring in your calendar. It may feel a little formal, like a meeting, but when it’s in the diary there’s no hurt feelings about ‘forgetting about each other’ and you’ll also look forward to it! Sometimes when you have more conversations more often, it becomes more comfortable to share the uncomfortable things too!Make emojis your best friend When we are with our friends in ‘real life’ we can naturally convey what we want to say easily, because we have the help of our facial expressions and body language. When communicating with our friends virtually, sometimes we don’t see others’ facial expressions and body language. Because of this, sometimes friends can misinterpret what you’re trying to convey! When texting or writing, a really great tip is to use more emojis to help convey the tone. A simple heart or kiss emoji can go a long way.Get creative onlineSo just because you’re on your phone or computer a lot, it doesn’t mean that every online interaction has to be through your fingers! Why not set up a group chat and organise a Zoom call so you and your friends can all chat and see each other’s faces? Or else you could all arrange to watch a movie together whilst online. Your friends may be really wanting to connect, but might be thinking, ‘Oh, I don’t want to be a burden to my friends’, ‘No one else probably feels lonely like I do right now’ and so on. You’d be surprised by how many friends would be feeling the exact same feelings right now and could really do with a fun chat that doesn’t involve typing! How to respond to cyberbullying If you are experiencing cyberbullying, don’t be afraid to speak to someone you trust about it such as a friend, teacher or parents. It’s very easy to just push the bullying aside and ignore it, which can be a great strategy temporarily, but it’s important that you have the courage to talk to someone about it. If you are being bullied, understand that there is something deeper going with that person. Of course, this doesn’t excuse their actions, but you should know that bullying is never about you directly.Words by Mandy Dante - CEO and founder of Flourish Girl - an online program for Teen girls. We have copies of ‘teenBreathe’ Magazine in the Resource Centre. There are so many great articles for teens wanting to explore how being mindful in everything you do, and being curious, kind and positive can create a happier, healthier and more authentic life.
