Mass Times in St. Paul’s Church
Greetings to all as we head into another holiday period. I especially wish the children and the
teachers and staffs of the parish schools every blessing as they begin the summer holidays and
may they enjoy their well-deserved break. In the past few months there has been lots of activity in
the parish. We had the First Communions and the Confirmations of the children attending the
Junior and the Senior schools. A special word of thanks to all involved in the preparation of the
children for these milestone events in their faith lives – parents, teachers, school and parish
teams, the ‘Do this in Memory; and the ‘Be my Witnesses’ teams who worked most committedly
with the children and their families to make the big day so memorable for them. We wish the
children in sixth class every blessing as they move on to the next stage of their education in
secondary schools and we look forward to welcoming the new classes in September.
You may already know that the principal of our Junior School, Síle Chuinneagáin, is due to retire
this year. I would like to extend a special word of thanks to Síle for her leadership of her excellent
team of teachers and for all the years she has been teacher and principal in the school. I would
like to acknowledge and offer our sincere gratitude to her for her dedicated and committed
service to not only generations of children in this parish but also to their parents and families, to
the parish and to the whole community for so many years. so I’m sure I speak on behalf of
everyone who is or has been in any way associated with the school and indeed on behalf of the
whole parish, the teachers and staff, past and present, when I take this opportunity to extend our
deepest appreciation and gratitude for the tremendous depth of committed service, of the highest
calibre, we have been blessed with during Síle’s time here in St. Paul’s and wish her every
blessing and the length of years to enjoy the next phase of her life’s journey.
On behalf of the parish community, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to Ms. Elaine McNulty
who will replace Síle as Principal on the 1st of September. We wish Elaine every blessing and success
in her new post.

Ms Chuinneagáin’s Retirement We would like to wish our principal Síle Chuinneagáin a very happy and healthy retirement. Síle has been principal of St. Paul’s JNS since 2004. She started working in our school in January 1979 and apart from two years spent in Trinity College studying for a master’s degree and a couple of years working in INTO headquarters in Parnell Square, all her working career has been spent at St. Paul’s JNS, Ayrfield. Síle’s enthusiasm for teaching and learning, her dedicated work to ensure that the children receive the best education possible, her leadership of her staff and the happy climate she cultivated within the school led to the continuing success of St. Paul’s JNS. We thank Síle for her work and wish her a fulfilling, adventurous future ahead.
Discover Primary Science and Maths Award St. Paul’s JNS has been awarded a 12th Discover Primary Science and Maths Award, with the plaque to prove it! We are proud of this achievement. Our thanks to Ms Foynes who co-ordinated the programme for us this year.
Graduation of Second Classes We wish to congratulate the children in our three second classes, Ms Fitzpatrick’s, Ms Cauldwell’s and Ms Munnelly’s who graduated from our school at the end of June. The children have spent four very good years with us in the Junior School and have been a pleasure to teach. We wish them every success as they move onto a new phase in their education in the Senior School and we look forward to hearing about their progress as they develop and mature.
Parents’ Association A word of appreciation to our Parents’ Association. Their hard work and fundraising efforts throughout the year contribute a great deal to the life of our school. Our thanks in particular go to Gillian Kenny who over the last number of years has been a most energetic and committed member of the Parents’ Association organising many events for the school. We are sorry to be losing her as she will have no children in the junior school next year.
Sports Day Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who supported us on our sports day this year. The threatened rain held off and and everyone enjoyed the races and activities immensely. The parents’ race was particularly competitive! Our thanks to Ms McCarthy for organising sports day and to the group of parents who organised a terrific coffee morning to coincide with it.
Over the Holidays We remind children to take care when swimming or out playing during the holidays. We also encourage the children to visit the library and have lots of fun reading great books filled with wonderful stories and characters. They can borrow books for those hopefully very few wet days!
The school will re-open after the summer holidays on Friday 1st September 2017.
St. Paul’s Junior School
My Communion 16th May 2017.
In School we were doing a count down to our First Holy Communion. We only had 5 more days. We were
doing a lot of preparation for this big day.
On the morning I felt very very nervous but also excited. I loved getting into all my gear. I wore my
Mammy's medal. Then I went to the church. I was so nervous I could not talk. Then I went to do the
actions of the our father. My Mammy was so proud. She was crying. I received the body of Christ. I loved
the taste. Some people say it tasted like cardboard! They must eat cardboard!
The choir sang lovely Hymns. Then I went home and played on the bouncy castle. I got a black forest
gateau that said Heidi's "First Holy Communion". I got the biggest slice. I want to say the biggest thank
you ever to My Mammy and Ms. Munnelly for all the things and all the preparation you gave me. I had the
best day ever. We had a ball. Heidi.

Síle Chuinneagáin - An Appreciation
It was with great surprise and a feeling of sadness that the parish of Ayrfield learned of the upcoming retirement of the Junior School Principal, Síle Chuinneagáin. Síle has been the Principal for the last 13 years, having been appointed to the role in 2004. Since that time she has consistently and continually sought to improve all aspects of the school community in every possible way, through her own efforts and through her leadership of the staff, which has seen many changes since her initial appointment as a teacher in Ayrfield in January 1979.
Síle first attended third level education in UCD, obtaining a degree in Social Science, before continuing her studies in St Patrick’s College Drumcondra and qualifying as a National Teacher in 1978. Síle has had a rich and varied career in education, including time spent as a mainstream class teacher and as a teacher for Travellers. Síle also worked for a time in Head Office in the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation, and completed a Masters degree. In addition, she is a published author, having researched and written her book, ‘Catherine Mahon: First Woman President of the
INTO’, published in 1998.
Síle has overseen many celebrations and occasions in the school’s history, most recently among them the successful commemoration of the 1916 Rising last year, and sadly the tragic and untimely death of local parish priest Fr Tom Colreavy in January of this year, who was always a great supporter of the work carried out in the school.
Síle’s commitment to furthering the school and community, her development of educational initiatives, and her dedication to the welfare and progress of the pupils under her care was unwavering. The children attending St Paul’s were at all times the most important people in any decision and action she took on their behalf. Her office door was always open, and she always made time for those children who were sent to her office to present some brightly-coloured painting or carefully-written story, as well as attentively listening to hesitant readers and marvelling over spelling tests and projects. These children proudly returned to their classrooms delighted with their visit to the principal, and more often than not in possession of a bright new pencil or other shiny reward that had been dispensed from Síle’s prize drawer.
Síle knows every child in the school by name, an impressive feat of memory as there are over two hundred and thirty pupils currently attending, and always enjoyed her interactions with each child, who in turn loved recounting their news and stories for her. There are children attending the school now whose parents have been taught by Síle, and her connection with, and impact on, the community of Ayrfield will be felt and cherished for a long time to come. As Mother Teresa is quoted as saying, ‘I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to
create many ripples’.
The ripples that Síle has sent through this parish, this school, and the wider Ayrfield community, will be her lasting legacy. Síle has sought and achieved much for this school. Most recently the school was awarded its 12th Discover Primary Science award, one of very few junior schools in Leinster and Ireland to accomplish this feat.
Síle’s many interests outside of education include Dublin GAA, and she has been delighted to welcome the victorious Dublin team with the Sam Maguire Cup to the school on no less than four occasions in the past five years. Sailing, walking, and the arts, are some of her other pursuits, and she will have more time to enjoy all these and more from September onwards. We wish Síle all the very best in the future and a long, happy, and no doubt active retirement. The school and community owe her an enormous debt of gratitude, and on a personal and professional level we will miss her influence immensely.

This has been another busy and productive year at St. Paul’s SNS. We have had many highs such as the National
Children’s Choir, The Nativity, our sporting achievements and the visit of the planetarium, to name just a few.
But unfortunately, this year saw the passing of the wonderful Fr. Tom Colreavy. He is greatly missed by all of us. We will also greatly miss our esteemed colleagues – Mr. Michael Hanrahan and Ms. Ní Chuinneagain and Ms. Regan, (Junior School), who are all looking forward to well deserved retirements. I wish everybody in our school community a restful
and enjoyable Summer.
National Children’s Choir
Our three 6th classes got the opportunity to take part in the National Children’s Choir during the school year. The children learned a very challenging repertoire of songs which required a huge amount of dedication. Having participated in a regional concert in the National Basketball Arena, thirteen children from our school were selected to sing in the final grand concert in the National Concert Hall on Saturday 27th May. We were very proud of all of them. A big “thank you” to
Ms. Moriarty, Mr. O’Seaghda and Ms. Di Murro for all their dedication and hard work with the choir.
Parents’ Association
Our Parents’ Association has worked tirelessly throughout the year on behalf of the students in St. Paul’s. Throughout the year they organised Cake Sales, Art Competitions and donated lovely prizes, given the children Selection Boxes and Easter Eggs, collected copper, manned the Book Fair and the school book sale, arranged clothes recycling collection and presented our 6th Classes with a graduation gift. We really value the hard work of the Parents’ Associa-
tion members. Thank you on behalf of the teachers, pupils and parents.
Sports
Well done to our Junior Girls’ Football Team in the Fingal League. Although we were defeated in our matches, the girls never gave up, they persevered and showed inspirational teamwork at every match. A special “thank you” to Stephen
Senior, who coached the Girls’ Junior Team and has been a huge support to our team.
Congratulations to our Junior Hurling Team who were victorious in the Go-Games Hurling League, winning all of their
matches. This team showed great sport and dedication throughout the year.
Following on from the quarter final appearance by our Senior Football Team in the Cumann na mBunscol, our Junior Team had an excellent campaign in the Fingal League. They showed a great enthusiasm for our native sport this year and their never say die attitude is to be commended. Thank you to David Needham for all this work throughout the year organising training within the school and over in O’Tooles GAA club. We would encourage all our students to take up the challenge of representing our school teams and I look forward to building on our success this year. A huge “thank you” to all the parents who supported the teams from the sideline and provided lifts to and from each match, your
support is much appreciated. Míle buíochas.
Athletics
Our Athletics Team took part in the Cuman na mBunscol Athletics competition which was held in Santry. Over sixty children had the opportunity to represent the school and they were a pleasure to work with. This year we managed to win a silver medal in the hurdles, congratulations to Jamie Murphy, and we were unlucky in a number of other events. We would like to encourage as many children as possible to go down and take part in the park runs which take place at the weekends in Malahide Castle and St. Anne’s Park. These events are free of charge and are a great way for children to maintain fitness. A special thank you to Ms. Cahill and Ms. Downes, who helped train the team throughout the year. Thank you also to all the parents who came to cheer on the school. “Thank you” to Mr. Treacy for all his work with the
boys’ football and the Athletics.
Austin Hackett Cup This is an annual soccer competition in which all children in 3rd and 4th classes take part. It commemorates Austin Hackett,
the first Principal of St. Paul’s Senior School. Congratulations to the winning team: Bournemouth
Teresa Collins Cup The Annual Teresa Collins Cup was played in June. This is the 21st year of this competition which is eagerly played by all the
children, boys and girls in our 5th and 6th classes. Congratulations to the winning team: England “
A few Words on My Retirement from St. Paul’s S.N.S. – Mr. Hanrahan
Carol Hunt in the Irish Times recently, writing on a different subject, states ‘One of these days my body will be returned to me- stamped used and useless and no longer the property of the state’. After an Army career of twenty five years,
followed by twenty years in National school, finally, I can look forward to being ‘me’.
What guided me to and St. Paul’s is explained in the faith of our generation as the spirit. Wonderful changes in education since include computers, internet, interactive boards in classes etc. for lessons and projects. Science approaches have been developed with plans and resources. Reading and Music are very much a focus. But perhaps
the greatest change since starting is the emphasis on our special children. We grow and learn from experience.
One constant has been the wonderful pupils and staff of St. Paul’s. I give thanks also that I ‘soldiered’ with Ms. Chuineagain and staff in the Junior School as well as working in St. Mary’s Special School Baldoyle, Scoil Chaitríona Girls’ School and Scoil Chiaráin Boys’ School in Donnycarney. Last but not least, thanks to all who worked
with me in class. During a recent illness I couldn’t say enough about my own colleagues, led by Mr Brougham.
Of course, I wish all the best to our hurlers who carry the torch of our national game forward. All we need is twenty or so
good committed hurlers to win the All Ireland for the Dubs.
Finally, we wish our 6th class pupils all the best in secondary school and look forward to welcoming our new third classes who will be joining us from the Junior School. The school will re-open on Friday 1st September.

6th Class Graduation Mass
On Wednesday 28th June, St. Paul’s 6th class boys and girls completed their graduation from Primary School with a celebration mass held in St. Paul’s church. The 6th classes and their teachers, Ms. Moriarty, Ms. Di Murro and Mr. O’Seaghdha, have put huge effort into this ceremony and it was lovely to see all parents and family members there on this special occasion. This marked the end of one chapter in their lives and the beginning of another.
The 6th class boys and girls chose “I’m on my way”, as their theme for their graduation and their appreciation for
family and friends. They also sang “When I grow up”, the words in this song have a very special meaning, the
message is for the parents from their children, “Panis Angelicus”, “Don’t stop me now” & “May we never have to
say goodbye”, which they performed at the Regional Concerts at the National Basketball Arena in Tallagh.
Special thanks and appreciation was expressed towards the childrens’ parents, teachers and friends for their help
to bring them towards this milestone. Many words of encouragement were given as inspiration for their future. The
Parents Association provided refreshments in the Pastoral Centre afterwards. A great celebration was had by all
who attended.
What Being Confirmed Means To Me To me being confirmed means a whole lot, not
only was it a day to get dressed up and
celebrate with family, but it was also a really
important step in our future Catholic and
religious lives. To me, my confirmation was a very
special and enjoyable day, and I am so glad I got to
share that day with my family and friends. Making my
confirmation was a great achievement in my religious
life and I was honoured when I was asked to do a
reading, I felt so proud standing there in God’s house
and being able to profess my faith aloud in front of
all those people.
Although the preparation before confirmation was
hard to learn, I’m happy that I did learn it because I
will now have that information for the rest of my life,
thanks to my wonderful teacher Mr. O’Seaghdhá.
Some people will remember what they wore and who
did their makeup, but I’ll remember the prayers and
preparation we did and the 2 hours long mass. I will
remember this day for the rest of my life.

What Being Confirmed Means To Me
To me being confirmed is becoming a true
Christian. It is a very important occasion
and also a happy celebration. It is not only
about getting dressed up for the day, but about how
the holy spirit will descend on us like it did on the
apostles long ago. I enjoyed making my
confirmation especially with my family, friends and
teachers by my side.
To me being confirmed was a very special
occasion, not to be forgotten about. Some people
remember the party after the mass, I will
remember the party, but will never forget the hour
and a half in the church. I enjoyed my confirmation
and I wished it would never end.
Confirmation is one of the most important
Sacraments and I am happy to have made my
confirmation and to be a true Christian for the rest
of my life. A lot of hard work was put into the
confirmation, but I am glad because all of the work
paid off. Being confirmed was one of the most
enjoyable days of my life. Lauren McBride
Parish Pastoral Council
Over the past few months we have been busy piecing together a new Parish Pastoral Council. Choosing a
new Council is a process which requires time, patience, discernment and a lot of prayer for guidance from
the Holy Spirit. I am happy to tell you that the new Council should be ready to start its work in September
when the holiday season is over. Once again sincere thanks to the previous Council for all the work it did
on behalf of the people of the parish. I would ask your prayers for the parish and for the new Council.
‘Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of you love, send forth your
Spirit and they shall be created and you shall renew the face of the earth.’
Summer Mass Schedule
Since the passing of Fr. Tom, on the 30th January 2017, there has, effectively, been just one priest in each
of the two parishes, ourselves and Donaghmede. While it has been a challenge, we in Ayrfield have man-
aged to keep a full Mass schedule. Donaghmede have had to reduce the number of Masses some time
ago. This Summer, July and August, we will be cutting back a little.
During these months, there will be no 7:30pm Monday evening Mass nor will there be a first Saturday
morning Mass at 11:00 am
The Miraculous Medal devotions will be held immediately after the 10am Mass on Mondays as of the 3rd
of July.

Padre Pio Corner
On the 22nd September 1968 the International Convention of Prayer Groups brought
an enormous crowd to San Giovanni Rotondo. A massive show of respect and love
to their founder and Spiritual adviser, Padre Pio. Little did this huge crowd realise
that the very next day their beloved Padre would be called from this life to his Eternal
reward in Heaven.
Everything that day was adorned in bunting, red roses, and red flowers in abundance. The hospital,
home for the Relief of Suffering, and the Church of the Friary looked fantastic and everyone joined in the
festivities and celebrations. Padre Pio on seeing the magnitude of the crowds was confused and
bewildered that he sought to hide from it all.
Records show that this day, 22nd September 1968 would linger in the minds of everyone present and of
course the mass ("his last") in honour of his prayer groups was so full of emotion and love that no one
wanted the day to end. At 5 am Padre Pio wanted to say his usual low mass but the Guardian, seeing
how weak and feeble he was gently insisted that he celebrate a Solemn High mass for the Convention of
Prayer Groups and Padre Pio agreed.
As soon as the Church doors were opened the people literally swarmed to the aisles and pews and in a
matter of minutes every inch of space was occupied and full, leaving many people still out in the square.
Padre Pio was assisted by two priests and walked with great difficulty to the Altar to celebrate Holy
Mass. The crowd went wild with the joy of seeing him. It took some considerable time and effort to obtain
silence and order. The red roses and red flowers all around the altar symbolised the final sacrifice of the
man of God whose life had been spent for the good of souls. It was a Mass of agony for him. When he
raised the Sacred Host and Chalice he stared at them as if he was seeing in them, the actual mystery of
the invisible.
He dwelt so long that his eyes became glossy and he could no longer perceive human things around
him. People were truly one with him and when Mass had ended there was a tremendous and
thunderous applause as the people chanted " Viva Padre Pio, Viva Padre Pio" as they observed how
frail and fragile he was getting off his chair and going down the steps of the altar. Padre Pio stumbled,
bent over and almost fell. Brother Bill promptly got hold of him, held him up and eased him into his
wheelchair and accompanied him into the Sacristy. The good Padre no longer seemed like himself,
weak and pale, his hands cold, he stared at everyone with a faraway look and looked unaware of what
was happening around him.
At 10.30 that night he succeeded in going to the window of the old Church Choir area to greet the crowd.
Fr. Onorato seeing how ill he was, tried to dissuade him from doing so. Padre Pio, even though his body
was broken his heart was still overflowing with love and he said, "I want to greet my children for the last
time". It was a moment of sheer joy of energy and passion. Then the Padre with a lot of help retired to
his room.
Have faith and trust in the Lord.

Do you know the benefits of joining a one of the oldest and undoubtedly the best GAA Club in Dublin? There are of course several……. If you have children/grandchildren they can learn to play our national sport in a safe place by qualified coaches. If they are 4 to 10 they can also participate in our annual Easter, Halloween & Christmas parties. The older kids aren’t left out either. And what about us adults I hear you say!!! Sponsorship is a very important component of any club. It has major beneficial attributes for both parties. This season we are delighted to welcome and thank a few new sponsors. Firstly, our Minor boys team proudly wear the kit donated by ex ‘In Tua Nua’ bassist & ‘Kanoodle’ proprietor Matt Spalding. Restaurateur Matt, a top chef and undoubtedly a superstar in his own right, has a keen interest in Gaelic football/hurling and Cumann Uí Thuathail. On the other hand, our senior footballers will freshen up any pitch in their ‘Crown Paints’ jerseys. Kevin Whelan from the Crown Decorating centre on the Malahide Road said, “We feel it’s important to promote sport” and they couldn’t support a better team and a greater club. We also thank Cosgrave Butchers, Clarehall for their sponsorship towards our juvenile section. It is wonderful to have them all on board with us.
O’Toole’s girls win in style……. our U13 girls played their socks off during the 2017 Féile and the proof was in the pudding so to speak. Lead mentor Ann was quoted saying “It was an amazing achievement, I’ve never been happier or proud of the effort and dedication these girls put in. All their hard work and hours of training paid off”.
The final v St Anne’s Bohernabreena proved to be a close game and our victory came thanks to our greater efficiency in front of the goal with fast breaks and classy finishing. O’Toole’s dominated the first half, with much of our better play coming through roving midfielder Saoirse Lawlor. It was, in fact her that that put us in front. St Anne’s levelled a couple of times but it was O’Toole’s who were finally to take the lead thanks to two swift attacks from our centre. The second – courtesy of a weaving run and confidently taken by Brook Campbell. It was the most cutting and skilful move of the contest, and eventually proved conclusive.
The low scoring game meant every point was crucial. St Anne’s briefly went ahead but O’Toole’s had a sting in the tail and she was Sophie Handbridge whose goal ultimately won the game for us.
It was also a great day for team mate Saoirse Lawlor representing the O’Toole’s Féile team in the ‘Féile Skills Star Challenge’. Saoirse finished second doing herself and the club proud.
Congratulations to one of the team Brook Campbell on her achievement of making the U13 Dublin Development squad. Her family thank her mentor Ann and O’Toole’s for training and guiding her.
Cumann Uí Thuathail has been training youngsters for many years, with great success. Not only are children learning the art of Gaelic football, Camogie & Hurling, but they also learn life skills, such as teamwork, respect, patience etc. Like all progressive GAA clubs O’Toole’s have worked hard on developments to provide quality facilities for our players and members. We therefore need to fundraise from time to time. Recently we had a great fun quiz night in aid of our juvenile section and a fancy dress darts night in aid of our senior section. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the organisers and those that participated, attended and supported.
Our Annual Golf Classic which, will be held this year in Balcarrick Golf Club on Friday 15th Sept 2017. This year, in response to the suggestion of several participants the format on the day will be a Scramble 4-person team event with the two best scores on each hole to count. There will be a shotgun start at 3p.m. A subscription of €300 per team will include a game of golf and dinner in the evening. We will also hold a raffle on the day for the golfers who participate in the event with many prizes on offer and one lucky winner will win 2 tickets to the All-Ireland Football Final. Dublin City Council have asked us to remind residents that the blue bags are provided for community use only and not for green waste from residents gardens. We have an ongoing problem every time we leave bags after cutting the grass around the flower beds people are putting their own bags with these. We would ask your co-operation in this, as if this continues Dublin City Council could refuse to collect from our estate.
Adopt a box!!! We are looking for people living around the green to 'adopt a box' - the large planters to commemorate 1916 need regular watering. If interested in help-ing in this way please let one of the committee members know. Save the date - Saturday evening 22nd July, we are planning a 'Meet your Neighbour' evening on the green in Rathvale - a note will be delivered to each household with details closer to the date.

On Friday 9th June the proceeds from this year’s sponsored
swim, €7,000, was presented to Antoinette Kelly, Community
Fundraising Manager, Children’s Cancer Research, Crumlin
Hospital. This money has gone towards the Julie Wren Trust.
The Julie Wren Children's Cancer Support Centre in Crumlin
was set up by Esther Wren, the mother of Julie Wren who
battled with cancer from when she was a beautiful
17-month-old baby until she died just after her eighth
birthday. The Centre funds the Julie Wren Complementary
Therapy room on St. John's Ward. The therapy room is the
only one of its kind in Ireland. The main aim is to ease some of
the pain, anxiety, stress, nausea and suffering of children with
cancer and their parents.
Your generous support will have a huge impact. On the front-line in
Our Lady's Children's Hospital, these critical and urgent services will
transform the lives of children battling with cancer and recovering
from serious illness. It will also ease the burden of their families and
loved ones as they cope with what must be the greatest stress and
trauma of their lives.
Sincere thanks to all who took part and to all who sponsored the
swimmers. Our thanks to the staff of O’Toole’s Clubhouse, for their

When Ayrfield Active group began almost three years ago with 20 members, who would have envisaged
that when we celebrate our 3rd anniversary in October the membership would be 130 plus, which just
goes to show how much a group like ours was needed. Our club is very much member driven, in that
you only get out of it what you put in. We are very sociable, you can come along on your own but we can
guarantee that you won't feel alone for very long!
Before we take our summer break we will have a talk on the use of essential oils from Carmel Howard.
Anita will lead us in dance and exercise. At the moment Anita is putting together plans for another
fundraising night in October. This year the night will have a “Strictly Come Dancing” theme with
members of our group pairing up with members of the Men's Shed. Anita plans to donate this years
proceeds to Ayrfield Community Centre. As she says herself the centre is where she perfected in her
dancing skills as a young girl as part of the Disco Flyers coached by the late Anne Loughney. Anita feels
this is her chance to give something back and is hoping for the same support she had for her past
events.
During May our group headed to Wicklow Gaol where “Matron Mary Storey” regaled us with the history of
the gaol. It was a wonderful exhibition informative and entertaining. It was a strange combination of a
fun trip mixed with sadness and horror as we found out about how men, women and children had been
treated there. We had a lovely lunch in the gaol where Eoin and his staff looked after us admirably. We
had a few hours to kill before we returned home and on Eoin’s recommendation we made our way to the
Mariner Pub there we found that Eoin had phoned ahead and they'd organised some music to entertain
us. We had a terrific afternoon with Joe Doyle leading us in an impromptu sing song. We also had a
lovely overnight stay in the Rivercourt Hotel, Kilkenny on what proved to be two of the best days of the
summer so far. Kilkenny is a city which along with historical places such as the Castle and Rothe House
to visit has plenty of shops which proved a big hit with our members. We have two more trips in June
firstly the group are going to the Casino in Marino we are also heading to Epic the Irish Emigration
museum, an interactive exhibition where we can discover the stories of Irish emigration around the world
and across the ages.
The Club closes on June 23rd with our glamourous “Ladies Day at Ascot”. We will have afternoon tea
and a little flutter on the races. After the races we will give our new Karaoke machine a whirl so start
practising girls!!
The club will reopen 3rd August with its new name and voting for this will be taking place shortly. Anita
will be taking a dance class and we will play some bingo. One of the outings being organised is a trip on
the Shannon. That'll be something exciting to look forward to. Other activities being planned, discovering
your families military history, knitting knockers, premature baby knitting
and much much more. Not forgetting one of the highlights of the year,
our Birthday party in October. Have a lovely sunny and safe Summer.

The Group meet each Thursday from 11:00am until 1:00pm in the
Ayrfield Community Centre. New members are always welcome.
Competitions are well under way and our new members are very
welcome. This years Captain’s Day is August 12th, all looking

We are playing for the Mark McMahon cup on Sunday 25th June,
ex-members very welcome to join us. As usual we play Sunday

Preparations for the Tidy Neighbourhoods’ Competition are under way and we would ask all residents to
help to get the estate into shape so we can keep up our winning record. Unfortunately, our committee are
showing signs of wear and tear and we need all the help we can get. The recent inclement weather has
put further pressure to get the estate ready for the judging that will be done in June and July so please
come out and give a hand. It’s a fantastic opportunity to get to know your neighbours and to improve the
appearance of the estate at the same time. This year the Council have done away with the over 300
dwellings category so we will have to compete with smaller estates with 150-300 dwellings. While this will
make winning more difficult we are confident that we can rise to the challenge.
Unfortunately, dog fouling continues to be a problem on the estate and makes cleaning and planting all
the more difficult. We would remind residents of their responsibly both morally and legally in this matter.
It’s hard enough to keep the estate tidy without having to contend with dog faeces. Also, please do not
dispose of poo-bags in flowers beds/shrubs.
We would remind builders and those doing construction work that they must repair any damage done to
grass verges and signs.
Concern has been raised about recent articles regarding Dublin City Council plans for Social Housing on
their site off Slademore Avenue/St. Paul’s School boundary. The Council do not need planning permis-
sion but would have to present a design plan to the Councillors under a Part 8 planning proposal. As far
as we can ascertain there has not been any such submission to date. We will continue to monitor the
situation but we would ask residents to pursue the matter with their elected Councillors.

Men’s Shed update, June 2017
A new sporting craze has hit Ayrfield Men’s Shed over the past few months. ‘Walking football’ is a type of football aimed at keeping senior citizens fit and healthy. Many of us Shedders are big soccer fans, so this came as a source of amusement as it doesn’t involve running. Led by Jimmy Moulds, a representative from the FAI, he came to our meeting to teach us how to play. He also acted as referee on two occasions,
and brought jerseys and equipment for use during the game.
One 84-year old went flying down the wing (sorry, speed-walking), side-stepped two defenders and
slammed the ball past the keeper. Not bad for a bunch of seniors!
During May we also visited Kilmainham Jail, which is of course a massive tourist attraction. It is one of the biggest unoccupied jails in Europe, and offers panoramic insight into some of the most profound and disturbing times in Irish history. Opened in 1796, leaders of many of our rebellions were detained here. Most of the 1916 leaders including Pearse and Connolly were held here before execution in the Stonebreaker’s Yard. Particularly poignant was the story of Joseph Mary Plunkett who was allowed to marry Grace Gifford in the jail chapel hours before he was shot. Our visit included a guided tour of the exhibition, and lunch across
the road at the IMMA building.
But when Shedmen meet, we don’t always go out. Card games and pool games are always in action, as well as bowling and pickleball, which is a bit like tennis and enjoyed by the members. The main hall is
used for these games.
During the tea breaks we are invariably entertained with jokes by two of our witty members: Tommy
Clarke, and Shay Farrelly. And occasionally a song or two!
Plans are currently underway for more outdoor summer visits to Wicklow Jail, the Boyne Valley and Glendalough.

Well it’s that time of the year again, our clubs are now finished until September, what a quick
year. We finished up with a party night for all with pizza and games. We are all looking forward
to a long hot summer. We had a hectic few months with both the juniors and seniors.
Congratulations to all who made their communion and confirmation this year.
Since our last article the senior club have been to the Cavan Centre where they had a fabulous
time. They left Dublin on Saturday 20th May and travelled by bus where they were met with the
staff for a quick snack and then the fun started. They took part in canoeing, go-carting, high
ropes followed by a break for dinner (food highly recommended). After dinner they made use
of the indoor games room and had a night walk later on. After a very late night not much sleep
for all, they made their way back home after breakfast, hopefully this will be an annual event.
We brought the juniors to the Viking Splash tour, plenty of shouting and fun, afterward we took
a horse and carriage around Stephen’s Green and then off to McDonalds afterwards, again it
was a great day and the weather held up.
A big thank you to all the leaders who volunteer each week. Also to our other helpers, to Fiona
our art teacher, Brendan who coaches the group in table tennis, Noirin on projector each week
at mass and of course Freda, who no matter what we ask, is always there for us. A big thank
you to all the children and teenagers who come week in, week out, looking forward to seeing
you again in September. Enjoy the break
Coolside of God & Ayrfield Youth
The Annual General Meeting was held in April and everything was explained to
the members about the previous year’s events. Thank God we had a very good
attendance and all members were very forthcoming with their views etc. It was a
very good positive meeting and we even got some new Committee Members who
have proven themselves over the past few months in their help and support to the
club.
There is one thing I have to say and that is the people and members who use
the Centre are the best people you can meet. The help and support they have
given to their club is exceptional. If they were in the Dáil, we would have one
good country. As you all know Robert Hedderman is back running the Bar and
doing a brilliant job. Thank you to everybody. So please come along and give
the support to the Centre.

Hello Everybody, don't be too shocked, I'm back again to haunt you with more words of wisdom, even, if I
am wearing a different hat. It seems only like yesterday since I last engaged with you through the eyes of
Chairman of the Pastoral Council, now, I want to say a few words to you as Chairman of the Finance
Committee.
As a matter of courtesy I would like to express our appreciation to Paddy Robinson, Margaret Maher, Jim
Cunion and Roisin McElroy who stepped down last year after a lifetimes service to Ayrfield. They
displayed tremendous commitment and dedication to serving St. Paul’s Parish in Ayrfield by ensuring that
Parish Finances were carefully monitored and where necessary invested. It has resulted therefore in our
parish being in a sound financial position. Gratitude alone on our part will count for little if we don't
continue with prudence and careful money management. Entering the front and back doors of the church
in St. Paul's, one cannot but feel a great sense of pride and affection for its warm and welcoming em-
brace. Why is it now looking in such pristine condition you may well ask. Part of the answer has a lot to do
with the great work carried out by our early Finance Committee Members plus the insightful input of a
man who was both of and before his time--Fr Tom, sadly gone from us but never forgotten.
We are delighted to welcome Ms Patricia McLoughlin on board and she has kindly offered to act as
Secretary to the Finance Committee. I thank you, Patricia on behalf of the Finance Committee and wish
you every success in your new and challenging role. We could do however with a few more Patricias and
if there is anyone out there looking for an opportunity to serve the good people of Ayrfield in the field of
Finance, then lift the phone and ring Freda to let her know of your interest. The cost of running St. Pauls
is rising on a daily basis, we can’t in anyway be complacent about past experiences catering for our
current state of wellbeing. Therefore we need a fresh approach to deal with an ever changing set of
circumstances and that’s where your meaningful contribution would be appreciated. I await your early
response.
One other point which I hope will grab your attention is the number of parishioners who have been asking
what decision has been made in terms of honouring the memory of our beloved Fr. Tom Colreavy. May I
say that further to those enquiries, I understand that any decision on same will fall within the remit of the
New Parish Pastoral Council. This shouldn't in any way prevent you from submitting your proposals to the
Parish Office, off you go.
That’s it for the moment, I hope I have managed to persuade you to join the many volunteers who serve
St. Paul's so unselfishly. Their time has always made such a difference, I salute them, thank them and
wish them well.
My cup has now overflowed, I must refill and take my leave of you all, Fare thee well,

St. Paul’s Finance Committee
We are delighted to announce the appointment of or new Management team of Ciaran Mc Loughlin, Stephen Broughan and Keith O'Connell for the coming season. The three lads are all local and have come up through the ranks from schoolboy to senior level. We have left the AUL league and joined the Leinster Senior League where we
have a division 3 side on Saturday and a Major 1 side on Sunday.
As passersby can see our pitch on Blunden Drive is coming on great and we are so looking forward to coming home and playing in front of our home supporters on Sunday Mornings at 11am. I would ask parents to remind their children that the pitch is a Private ground and all non Ayrfield United activities are not allowed on the pitch. We have spent a lot of money trying to get the pitch up to standard and remove the eyesore that was there and we need the
communities help in keeping an eye on the pitch and not allow any non Ayrfield United personal to destroy it.
We had a great night of celebrations at Ayrfield United’s 40th Anniversary which was held on 16th June in the centre and hope everybody enjoyed themselves. So onwards and upwards and let the new season commence. Big thanks to Trevor Kennedy and his assistants for looking after our Schoolboy team as he does a brilliant job and never complains.
