“Adhaan” is one such piece of writing/ composition that awakens its readers to the affinity of Deen-o-Duniya and that of the body & the spirit.

That being said it no more concerns me whether the reader accolades me or not.

My sole motivation is to instil their hearts with conscience, sense and yearning.

AZAAN

It was in the year of 2011 that a movie was released to the best of my hopes titled as “Azaan”. I was delighted, finally a movie with true Islamic essence reflecting my culture’s purity and piousness. But on my way to the theatre I soon realized that air castles would have been much better than my non realistic hopes. This movie revolving around the character of a RAW agent named “Azaan Khan”, a detective, fooled me well until they showed a suicide bombing scene in a German meeting.

Namrah couldn’t stop getting laughter fits listening to “my plight”. Expressing full sympathy that sounded to me rather satirical, she said, “Dear brother, if I were you I would have at least gone for the trailer first”.

This story captures a few instances from the lives of persons belonging to a family, the one of which I’m a trivial but indispensable part. Namrah would often give a better introduction of mine as “the smallest & most irritating pigeon of the Zaidi-dove cote”.

میری یہ آرزو تھی کہ، میرے آنگن میں برسے وہ

عجب ھے یہ کرامت بھی، وہ رحمت بن کے برسا تھا

Meri ye aarzoo thi k, mere aangan me barse woh,

Ajab hai ye karamat bhi ,wo rehmat ban k barsa tha.

AZAAN-II

“By the way, who is Muhammad(PBUH)?”, hearing to this I realized how a single question could sometimes make you feel like a fish in the sands, left by the sea to dry and die. It was as if someone asked you what it was like to breathe.

I was faced with this question and many more while I was at the Seoul University of South Korea by none other than my classmate and friend, ‘Sarah Samar’. She would often confront me with such incoherent questions of hers, well, incoherent at least for me. She would irritate me by asking that why I still had faith in the concept of religion even in this modern era of technology.

And I, Dr. Meryum Kamal, would sink in the pool of shame at her ignorance. How was a pious Muslim Indian lady, who was a successful Islamic laureate and moreover who was proud at being a Muslim itself, be supposed to react any differently. How was I supposed to react any differently.

“You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in

Allah.”

Page 10: Azaan A lesson for listener

We Muslims believe that one could find answers to one’s problems regarding any situation prevailing in any century within the Quran itself. And these verses of Surah Imran came to my rescue in the situation with Sarah and ironically in the very century of technology that she talked about.

On one of the following mornings just before dawn I woke Sarah up and she came by the most soothing, heart-warming and angelic ‘call’ imaginable, or maybe it was completely beyond her imaginations. It was dark outside, quiet inside and bliss all around. Held by the charm she asked, “What the sound is Meryum?” With a pride I replied, “Azaan, Azaan, Azaan…..!

AZAAN-III

It had been 6 months to the day our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

took leave from this transient world on ALLAH’s will. A blissful morning breeze was blowing in the streets of Madina. It was ABU-Bakar(R.A)’s reign of khilafat. On one such day an old man was asked by the people to give call for prayer as it had been very long that they have been blessed with it. He went up to the calling place in MASJID-E-NABWI and called out Prayer.

ALLAH U AKBAR, ALLAH U AKBAR.

ASH-HADU ALLA ILAHA ILLALLAH.

ASH-HADU ANNA MUHAMMADUR RASULULLAH.

His eyes fell on the place Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to take during SALAAT. But as for that day it was empty, as empty as their lives without the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): Soul-less. He could’nt survive the pain of loss and lost consciousness.

This old man was none other than Hazrat BILAL Sayyadi. The same Mu’addin who hjad been given the privilege of calling out the very first AZAAN, by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). One about whom the Prophet (PBUH) had a vision of walking in the delights of the Paradise. On being informed by the Prophet (PBUH) of the same, one who replied, “whenever

Page 13: Azaan A lesson for listener

I perform ablution (wazu) I make it compulsory to offer two rakah nawafil salat-ul-wuzu , maybe it’s a rewarded by ALLAH SWT for this act.”

We are left two ponder over the intensity of faith of Hazrat Bilal (R.A) had.

His love for our beloved Prophet (PBUH) and his deviation to ALLAH SWT leaves us in awe. Till the time of Hijrat only Namaz(salaat) was practiced and there was no trend of AZAAN. After hijrat it was made obligatory to offer SALAAT in Jama’at by the order of ALLAH exalted. The Prophet(PBUH) consulted his Companions (Sahabaas) on way to gather Muslims for Prayers. Jews had the custom of blowing horns, Christians used to ring the bell while Zoroastrians lit the fire to call for Prayers. To this,Hazrat Abdullah-Bin-Zaid answered that he had a vision of a Pious Elderly Man suggesting him to call for prayer with Azaan. Hazrat Umar(R.A.) too have had the same vision. Listening to this the Prophet(PBUH) decided and asked HAZRAT BILAL to stand up and call for “AZAAN”. With these words ‘Yusuf Zaidi’s’ speech came to an end.

AZAAN-IV

I usually don’t mind things and loses but seeing a call-a connection hanging by a thread affects me and indeed affects me a lot.’

For long Yusuf Zaidi was listening to his friend and brother-in-law,’Shaheer kamaal’, saying these words with more or less of surprise and concern.

“I was describing you of a time when I was in a search for that call (Azaan) or to say that connection. I was looking to re-discover that lost call that eased suffering hearts. I was driven by my passion to find the reason that has made our hearts lifeless and our Azaans less enchanting.

I wanted to know where the charm, the sweetness & the enamor of AZaaN that left its listener spell-bounded was gone.” Said Shaheer to Yusuf. And continued, “I consulted many Islamic laureates and studied volume of their experiences but none could teach me the charismatic Azaan of Hazrat Bilaal(R.A).”But as it is said ALLAH (S.W.T) sends help for us from the most unexpected of sources. So other day I met a person who looked like an irresponsible fellow.I don’t know why I started aconversation with him, lost in my reverie, I even put forth my dilemma with Azaan.” To this the fellow replied that my quest altogether was baseless. Shocked, I enquired, if he was being insane with his words. I was talking about a very crucial aspects of my religion and there he was calling it baseless and unworthy. Un-wavered in his

Page 16: Azaan A lesson for listener

opinion he asked me the motive behind calling(Azaan) for Prayer(SALAAT), I said it is a call, call to the followers of Islam to come together and bow-down to ALLAH , the exalted in SALAAT. Similarly the strange follow replied that, if AZAAN is connected to ALLAH (S.W.T) , the Creator itself then why was I searching for its essence in the answer’s of ALLAH’s (S.W.T) creation. With this he left but I was enlightened. Twilight was approaching, I was hungry but couldn’t eat, do you know why my bro, because that fellow get away with my wallet. That was the first time that I slept empty stomach, or to say I tried to sleep. I spent that night in a Mosque(Masjid) not having even a single penny to spare on myself, I had lost all my cards and ID-proofs with the wallet that the guy took away.

Waking up before dawn I stood up and gave the Call of AZAAN. The inhabitant of the place yet to the day exclaim the beauty of that day’s “AZAAN”. I often ponder and so will you I’m sure that what uniqueness that call had “had”.

‘Abbi, do tell me, why is bhaiyaa(elder bro) so much devoted to “AZAAN”??’ said Namraah Zaidi to her father Yousuf Zaidi about Imran, and he replied. My child, your mother and so your uncle are both devoted to Azaan and its Charismaas. Following their footsteps your brother too has started to live the aspects of Azaan and is enthralled by it.”

This made Namraah to think of the time of her beloved mother ‘Meryum Kamal, and doting Uncle ‘Shaheer Kamal’.

Royal Night Club was a renowned club in the city Brooklyn of NewYork. It’s evening were brighter than the evenings of Paris and night were prettier than the night of Iraan. I was a singer at that Club, the one who made the club more alive and whose enchanting voice is public there craved for. It was one such night, party begin on its epitome, that my eyes got rooted on a girl. She looked quite familiar and reminded me of someone I knew. She was with her guy friends deep unmerged in the beats of the music that was playing. It took seconds for my temper to surge and fraction of a second for me to act accordingly. I took her hand and dragged her out of the club. But soon realized that I was in serious trouble as the girl was just look alike if the one I thought her to be. Her friends did beat me and if they left me alive or not was something that I couldn’t be decide for a minute or two. It was 3’O clock in the morning, I was in my bed remembering the happening of the evening. As I close my eyes and was about to be engulfed by sleep. I heard a call. A call that reminded every Muslim that he is the most privileged among mankind. I was left amazed by the beauty this call presented in the deep silence. “Azaan” indeed is such a sweet call. I was reminded, It was perhaps the Holy Month Of Ramazaan. I should be observing FAST. As I jump out of the bed or “trying to jump” my cell phone beeped. It was a message,” Dear Brother, At-least do come today, it is the day of EID”. It was from my loving sister Namraah, the one I thought the girl in my club to be. The image still haunts me, ………., What if she really had been her, ….……,

Indeed ALLAH is the most merciful.

Last stanzas of AZAAN were being called out,______________

ALLAH U AKBAR, ALLAH U AKBAR !

‘So this is the story of your mother Meryum, uncle Shaheer , Brother Imraan, Father Yourself and Ex-Singer brother Rizwaan’ said Yousuf to his daughter Namraah, also adding that each of them though being differently motivated were connected to Azaan and hence to each other.

“Thanks a lot, ABBU”, with thes words Namraah headed to Imraan’s room.

‘imro bhai, tell me something about Azaan’, said Namraah. As a habit Imran steered her away to tease her, saying, “run away, I’ve jobs to do.’.

‘Namraah too sought her last card of emotional drama,’teel me now, if oyu don’t want abbu to come here and ask you the same’.

Imraan began: __

Azaan is not obligatory for women but if called out then not loudly. Azaan is to be listened with silence and to be repeated for once. Its good time for acceptance of supplications. Azaan & Aqaamat both can be performed by the same person or two

different persons as well. If one comes to acknowledge the true importance of Azaan, it will be

bigger a prize for him than winning a lottery. // due to it’s importance Moa’zzin will be chosen by lottery.

Page 24: Azaan A lesson for listener

Azaan is one & only voice/sound which can be listened anywhere at

any time due to it’s timing. Worlds can hear this gift 24 hours.**

Said Imran & added with a sigh: “I wish to have seen the trailer of “Azaan”.” Namraah burst laughing and Imraan ran away after her.

AZAAN-VIII

I ‘Imraan Zaidi’ am still in look out for ’the connection’. Azaan’s deep involvement in my family is still a mystery for me. Despite all this I often recall verses of Allama Iqbal (Alaihi Rahma),

Jo main sar- basjda hua kabhi to zameen se aane lagi sadaa

Tera dil to sanam aashna tujhe kiya milega namaaz mein

After all of that If it continues to happen with me (all sin which is done by me) then I should ashamed on myself, on my Zaidi’s family clan. It will change, so I !! Insha ALLAH I will spend whole of my life in the shadow of ISLAAM & I should do.

What do you think? What you have learnt?

In spite of that it can’t be :

Azaan se to ye sabaq mila

Tujhe kiya milega namaaz mein.

Thank you. And give me a favor please connect yourself To ALLAH, listen Carefully god-gifted soft soothing, Heart-warming AZAAN.
