History

Cantrina is a tiny country hamlet in the Valtènesi. It lies deep in the western hinterland of Lake Garda, in the commune of Bedizzole, on the moranic hills formed many thousand of years ago by the glaciers that gave the Garda area its present contours.

“When, at the beginning of the 1990s, I created the estate that I run today together with Diego Lavo, I decided to give it the name of our little village, Cantrina. The Estate is small and completely family-run. In all we cultivate just under 6 hectares of land, split up between two different sites. We have planted 33,000 vines, initially concentrating mainly on international varieties, although we are now “rediscovering” some local vines as well. Following out first (somewhat experimental) bottles in the 1990s, the wines began to take on a distinctive style with the 2,000 vintage.

Our goal is to express in our wines the unique characteristics that our small plots of land confer on the various types of grapes that we grow. We like to interpret our work in the vineyard and in the winery as an open-minded “exercise de style”, that is to say free from preconceived ideas or conditioning of any sort, but with maximum respect for the singular characteristic the nature bestows on the fruits of our vines.

Our wines convey the character of their terroir and of the people who make them, based on these elements and on my past experience in the sphere of the arts, I have sought to give our wines a very creative-and consequently unique-imprint.

The dominant factor in our wines is our splendid territory, with its extremely varied soils in which the glaciers and the river have left an obvious trace of their movements over the course of thousands of years. We have soils of medium texture and with a high clay content, which yield wines of considerable structure but also notable freshness, two characteristics that guarantee the remarkable longevity of our products”.

Libero Esercizio di Stile

LIBERO ESERCIZIO DI STILE Libero Esercizio di Stile has always been the best description for Cantrina’s entire philosophy of production: ”Open-minded” because I like to be creative; “exercise” because I think of my wines as exercises of the intellect; and “style” because each one of us has his or her own.

As from this year, Libero Esercizio di Stile is also the label for a wine based on absolute creativity. Only in certain years, when a small parcel of wine – resulting from our special research – has those “experimental” characteristics that make it border on a divertissement, will that product be given the L.E.S. moniker. The style of the bottle will always be the same, but the wine designated as L.E.S. each year may well be different. The back label will of course, though, display all the statutory information regarding the wine in the bottle.

LIBERO ESERCIZIO DI STILE 2007 chardonnay 100% (chardonnay “OLD STYLE” , ripe grapes, the wine aged in wood for a year ) LIBERO ESERCIZIO DI STILE 2010 petit verdot 100% ( rosè wine, aged in barriques about a year LIBERO ESERCIZIO DI STILE 2010 It’s a Rosè wine obtained from the vinification 100% Pinot Noir grapes.

We made the first vinification in 2009, it was a successful experiment. We decided to keep on producing it, the 2010 has been a very good vintage for this wine, at the moment fruit and freshness are the main characteristics. The must was in contact with the skins for about 9 hours, followed by careful vinification and maturation in stainless steel. In our opinion it is a wine that has good potential for development: we’d like to see what it’s like in a year’s time… after all, we’re talking about a rosé made from a well-structured grape like Pinot Noir.

La grappa del poeta

The Grappa del Poeta is another new product: Pilzer has distilled the pomace from the 2008 Nepomuceno for Cantrina . My dear friend gave me an idea for the label: a tribute to the poet Gabriele d’Annunzio, one of the iconic figures from our area. The poem was written by Eugenio Farina and is really moving.
