Re-start for Firehall expansion AAP Due to a clerical error, the City of Mer- ritt must cancel and restart the Alterna- tive Approval Process for “Bylaw No. 2223, 2017 a bylaw to authorize the bor- rowing of the estimated cost ($2,209,000 over 25 years) of the Fire Hall expansion.” The problem was the elector response forms for this process were not available after publication of the first notice to elec- tors; rather, they were only available after publication of the second notice. To rem- edy this error, the City of Merritt will re- issue public notices and recommence the voting process — ie. re-submit the ads in the newspaper with different dates. Anyone who might have submitted responses will have to go back to City Hall to re-submit their vote/form. If 10% of the electorate or 556 eligible voters in- dicate they don’t approve of this borrow- ing, it would then need to win a referendum for it proceed. Any ques- tions, contact the Director of Corporate Services [email protected], or 378-8634. Rear view MMMirror Close call for Adelphi Thursday noon, a work-guy was up on the Adelphi roof with a torch. (You know we could stop right there, right?)and a stud, inside a wall underneath where the guy was working - this stud caught fire. Began smokin’. The smoke started flowing down false ceilings, up false floors, and along those little tunnels where the wires and pipes run. And, of course it seeped out, eventually into cor- ridors and common areas in the hotel... Ron West, who works for Jay around the hotel, thought he could smell smoke, checked it out and sounded the alarm. Jay says firefighters were on the scene pronto, and took care of the situation quickly, ef- ficiently, and professionally. In fact, Jay was happy with the way everybody handled the crisis, staff, the cafe & barbershop folk, and his pub patrons. Hotel residents were ferried over to the ValNic by the Red Cross (a special emergency program al- lows for 3 days food and lodging under the circumstances) but most were back ‘home’ Friday. Close call. The Fire Chief says, “Five minutes more and the Adelphi woulda been a memory.” Thousands of years ago an Indian Chief in eastern Canada released a rave. At the same time, a Greek philosopher on the other side of the world released a dove.
