Schetsboeken gered uit de brandNa de brand in het oude Bouwkunde gebouw zijn een groot aantal handteken schetsboeken van studenten teruggevonden. Deze schetsboe-ken zijn al die tijd bewaard en liggen nu gesorteerd op jaar (startend vanaf studiejaar 2003/2004) in zaal M van BK City. Studenten worden verzocht deze schetsboeken bij de start van het nieuwe collegejaar op te halen.

Changing Contexts in Urban RegenerationOp 7 september presenteert bouwko Paul Stouten het boek ‘Changing Contexts in Urban Regeneration’ in de Berlagezaal van BK City. U bent van harte uitgenodigd de boekuitreiking vanaf 15.00 uur bij te wonen. Naast Paul Stouten zelf zullen afdelingsvoorzitter Urbanism Maurits de Hoog en Arjan Schakenbos (bestuursvoorzitter woningbouwcorporatie Woonstad Rotterdam) spreken.

Opening Academisch Jaar bij BouwkundeOp 30 augustus opende de TU Delft het nieuwe academisch jaar met het thema ‘No Time to Waste’. Decaan Wytze Patijn zal op maandag 6 september om 13.00 uur ook het Academisch Jaar van Bouwkunde openen. BK CiTY – The department of Building Technology, located on the first floor on the West wing, got a facelift. The results of this undertaking were revealed at the opening of the department on July 1st. When entering the refurbished wing, the first element that comes into view is a storey-high, sculptural element, completely finished with mirrors. These mirrors double the spatial experience of the corridor (or quadruple it, or multiply it to infinity, depending on the angle of view). The niches within the element are used to display various structures.

Behind this mirrored wall, the employees of the department have their office. The secre-tariat is housed right next to it, behind a purple polycarbonate counter. A newly installed staircase leads to the mezzanine floor, where more offices are located, as well as the much needed closed off meeting spaces: all those mirrors and openings aren’t exactly soundproof. BT student association BouT is also provided with office space, after their midsummer purge from the ground floor. BT students got their new space on the second floor, directly above the employee wing. The proximity to the employees to the students should improve co-operation.(MS)

BK CiTY – For years, the faculty chair collection was hidden from view. After miraculously emerging unscathed from the burnt remnants of the old faculty building in 2008, the collection was moved to storage, again out of sight. Finally, the collection has earned a place of its own in BK City where an exhibition will be constructed in the hallway next to the Architecture library making the chair collection permanently avail-able to students, professors and visitors. As there was no room in the limited faculty budget to fund the exhibition, the financial means were found outside BK City at Stichting Sofa, a foundation that stimulates furniture art and design.

The exhibition has an open character and will be integrated into an existing circulation route. Robert van der Linde of Kossmann.dejong exhibition architects, designer of the exhibition: “We wanted to present the collection as monu-mentally as possible to communicate the quality of the total collection at once. For this reason we settled on an open depot set-up. All the chairs will stand in tiers on steel industrial shelving which has been refined to museum quality, spaciously organized and accompanied by descriptions of the pieces.” on the cupboard touch screens will be fastened where more information can be found: how they were made, who designed them and in what time period. For those who are concerned about the safety of some of the chairs, Van der Linde responds: “Both cupboards have a moveable stair so that the chairs on the top floor can be viewed from close by. This is where the vulnerable models can be found. By placing an acrylic screen on the stair the visitor can see the chairs, but not touch them. (AG)”

BK CITY – As the new academic year is about to take off, thousands of Bouwkunde students flock once again to the studios and lecture halls of the faculty. Past May, all of these students had to register for the courses and/or semesters of their choice. During the summer the Bouwkunde student administra-tion did their best to fulfill each student’s wishes, though not every student could be catered to. Some courses and graduation studios were cancelled due to too few participants, while others were so overwhelmed by registra-tions that they soon exhausted their capacity: any further registrations were then to be put into their second-choice (or even third-choice) course.

At the time of writing, it is still unclear which graduation studios are cancelled and which are not, hence their exclusion from the data. The data presented here are the registrations for the specific semesters and studios of MSc-1: as the final adjustments have not yet been made, these numbers will most likely change a bit. Though even with these small margins for errors, the numbers do show where most of the students are concentrated: and how many colleagues/contestants you most likely will have in your next twenty weeks of classes.

In total 520 students are starting their MSc-1 at the faculty. The most cosmopolitan MSc-1 tracks are Architecture with 54% international students and Building Technology with 51% of international students. The least international Master Track is Real Estate and Housing, where only 8% of MSc-1 students are intern-tational. As for Architecture the most cosmopolitan MSc-1 studio is Winy Maas’ The Why Factory, where 5 out of 6 students are international, closely followed by Kas Oosterhuis’ Hyperbody where three quarters of students are international. The least internatio-nal Architecture MSc-1 studio is Dwelling with “only” 44% international students. (MS)

leve Bouw-kunde!

Wat zijn wij toch een unieke faculteit. Het broeit en bruist van de activiteiten. Studenten, docenten en andere medewerkers bewegen zich door BK City alsof het een bijenkorf is. Je vraagt je af: Wat gebeurt er allemaal hier? Wat doet iedereen en waar zijn ze mee bezig? Op het eerste gezicht is iedereen aan het praten, overleggen en maakt iedereen maquettes of werkt achter een laptop. Spannend! Het krioelt van mensen van allerlei soorten.

Waarom is BK zo aanstekelijk? Wetenschap is hier duidelijk dynamischer. Geen stille gangen met kleine gesloten kamers waarachter iets geheimzinnigs pruttelt of iets onduidelijks gebeurt. Openheid is bij BK het trefwoord.

Dat komt omdat bouw-kunde een vak is dat over mensen gaat en sterk verweven is met maatschap-pelijke vragen. Iedereen heeft met gebouwen en omgevin-gen te maken. Het is van alle dag. Tegelijk weerspiegelt het veel: gebouwen tonen onze geschiedenis, onze manier van leren, weten, wonen en werken, kortom: onze cultuur. BK is overtui-gend een ontwerpfaculteit: we leiden mensen op die in de toekomst onze leefomge-ving gaan bepalen. Hoe daarin gewoond, geleefd en hoe daarover gedacht gaat worden. Daarom is het zo wezenlijk dat wij ons met alle facetten van het vak bezig houden: de techniek van het bouwen, de maatschappelijke complexiteit, sociale en culturele ontwikkelingen, de processen en procedures maar bovenal met de synthese van dit alles. Daar draait het om bij het ontwer-pen, kortom: de Schoonheid van alle dingen.

ONDERZOEK OP HET OTB

DELFT “There have been some changes in the alumni policy over the years. We have come to recognize the necessity of and wish to build a more active relationship with our old students” says Agnes Wijers, the head of M&C at the faculty. The Alumni Symposium is seen as an excellent opportunity to show that the university cares about its alumni and is committed to advancing an active network of knowledge exchange and as an investment which the university hopes will pay off in the long run.

In the past, the so-called “Technologiedagen”(Technology days) provided the opportunity for the alumni to meet, but were not specifically tailored to this group. Last year in May (2009), a smaller event aimed specifically at alumni was launched. This year is the first time that this universi-ty-wide event is organized. The current plans are to organize such events either annually or biannually.

The program for the day is not yet finalized, but it will consist of a faculty part from 2 PM and a university wide get-together later in the day. The faculty programme will consist of a debate between the alumni and the dean, where a variety of issues regarding the education and curriculum will be discussed. “Alumni can provide feed-back about the applicability of the education we provided them with. In addition, they can suggest research initia-tives that arise in their field, and our faculty can provide the needed skill” Wijers adds.

As for the university-wide event, this will be held at the Aula and start at 4:30 PM. The keynote speech will be given by professor Francine Houben (an alumnus of the Faculty of Architecture and the head of Mecanoo). The speech will be followed by a reception where alumni can meet and network in a less formal setting.

DELFT – Het ‘Onderzoeksinsti-tuut Technische Bestuurskunde’ werd in 1985 opgericht. Al snel kreeg het instituut, dat vanaf het begin interfacultair en interdisci-plinair onderzoek verrichtte, vele uiteenlopende opdrachten. Van ministeries tot maatschappelijke organisaties tot beleggers. Toen in 1993 de faculteit TBM werd opgericht, werd de naam ‘Techni-sche Bestuurskunde’ voor die faculteit gereserveerd en ging OTB als naam (en niet langer als afkorting) door het leven.

Tegenwoordig is het OTB een onmisbaar wetenschappelijk insti-tuut van de TU Delft, niet in de laatste plaats omdat het goed is gebleken in het aanboren van derdegeldstromen en het publice-ren van wetenschappelijke artikelen en boeken. Het OTB heeft zeven onderzoeksprogram-ma’s en werkt op onderzoeks- en onderwijsgebied nauw samen met de faculteiten TBM, CiTG, BK, 3mE en zelfs LR en EWI. Wetenschappelijk directeur van OTB en oud-interim-decaan van Bouwkunde, Peter Boelhouwer: “OTB richt zich op maatschappe-lijke vraagstukken. We hebben ongeveer 50 promovendi die strategisch wetenschappelijk onderzoek doen naar maatschap-pelijke problematiek. Deze promovendi, evenals hoogleraren en andere onderzoekers, zetten we ook in op het gebied van onderwijs, hierbij samenwerkend met de verschillende faculteiten in hun onderwijsprogramma’s.”

Nu is het zo dat het OTB binnen-kort onder de vleugels van Bouwkunde gaat opereren, als gevolg van bezuinigingen bij de TU Delft. Boelhouwer denkt echter niet dat er heel veel gaat veranderen: “We worden een facultair instituut bij Bouwkunde met een eigen bedrijfsvoering. De samenwerking met Bouwkunde wordt uiteraard nog nauwer dan deze al was: we gaan bijvoor-beeld gemeenschappelijke onderzoeksprogramma’s opzet-ten.” Bang dat dit ten koste gaat van het interfacultaire karakter van OTB is Boelhouwer niet: “Eerst opereerden we direct onder het College van Bestuur en nu onder het bestuur van Bouw-kunde. Dat is eigenlijk het enige verschil. We hebben via diverse hoogleraren en onderzoekers nog steeds binding met de andere faculteiten.” Dat OTB zijn ervaring in het aantrekken van geldstromen kan delen is natuur-lijk mooi meegenomen. Boelhouwer: “OTB kan helpen om Bouwkunde wetenschappelijk te versterken. Financieel is dat inderdaad ook voordeliger. Het zal een geleidelijke overgang worden, maar de samenwerking tussen OTB, Bouwkunde en de andere faculteiten zal hierdoor alleen maar sterker worden.” Veel reden tot bezorgdheid heeft Boelhouwer ook niet: gezien het sterke wetenschapelijke netwerk dat het instituut inmiddels heeft opgebouwd en zijn bijdrage aan universitaire rankings (via wetenschappelijke artikelen en boeken) en inkomsten van de TU Delft, is het bestaan van het OTB de komende jaren in ieder geval verzekerd. de onderzoeksprogramma’s hebben de gebouwde omgeving gemeenschappelijk, vandaar de sterke binding met Bouwkunde.

JUBIlEUmcONgREs: ‘stedelijke ver-nieuwing: naar nieuwe perspectieven’

aangepakt staat centraal. ‘Het blijft een haast onmogelijke opgave om een architect binnen zes weken een compleet gebouw te laten ontwerpen en van hem te verwachten dat het vervolgens niet meer wordt aangepast. Elke architect zal bevestigen dat na de contractverlening het ontwerp-proces grotendeels opnieuw begint.’ Problemen in de besluit-vorming ontstaan veelal doordat de gunningscommissie niet over voldoende architectuurkennis beschikt. Men laat zich vaak leiden door mooie plaatjes en praatjes en kan moeilijk een inschatting maken over de werkelijke kosten en prestaties van het ontwerp. Volgens Volker is het echter ook niet verstandig om de mening van de bevolking doorslaggevend te laten zijn. ‘Het is vaak onmogelijk met beperkte informatie de kwaliteit van een ontwerp goed te beoordelen en in veel gevallen stemt maar een klein deel van de bevolking.’ Volker hoopt dat de sprekers op het symposium openhartig zullen zijn over de aanbestedingen waarbij zij betrokken zijn ge-weest. Zo zal Henk Nij Bijvank, projectleider bij het ontwerp en de bouw van een nieuw gemeen-tehuis in Almelo, spreken over de aanbesteding voor het gemeente-huis . Na tijdens de oorspronke-lijke aanbesteding tegen veel problemen te zijn opgelopen, heeft de gemeente Almelo de aanbesteding in zijn geheel opnieuw uitgevoerd. Uiteindelijk leidde dit tot een beter en gewenst resultaat. Ook zal Bjarne Mastenbroek aanwezig zijn als voorzitter van de Bond van Nederlandse Architecten. De BNA zet zich al jaren in voor vernieuw-de beleidsregels omtrent aanbe-stedingen en hij heeft ook een handleiding opgesteld die de aanbesteder helpt de juiste ontwerper in plaats van een verleidelijk ontwerp te kiezen.Door verschillende partijen aan het woord te laten wil het symposium een stap in de goede richting te zetten. ‘Het is een poging om de discussie te openen en alle betrokken partijen meer duidelijkheid te verschaffen over de aanbestedingsproblematiek.’ Of deze stap ook daadwerkelijk gemaakt gaat worden is in grote mate afhankelijk van de vraag of de sprekers werkelijk openheid van zaken zullen geven over de aanbestedingsprocessen waarbij zij betrokken zijn geweest.

De ambities van de gemeente rot-terdam voor het stadskantoor waren hoog: het moest het duurzaamste gebouw van Nederland worden, met architec-tuur van internationale allure. Al snel maakten architecten openlijk bezwaar tegen de toelatingseisen voor de aanbesteding. Een omzet van 2,4 miljoen euro en een portfolio met een groot kantoorge-bouw en een woontoren werd gevraagd, waardoor vele jonge architecten buitenspel werden gezet. Uiteindelijk wees de vakjury het ontwerp van OMA, het architectenbureau van rem Koolhaas, aan als meest geschikte van de vijf inzendingen voor het stadskantoor. De jury legde hiermee de voorkeur van de bevolking, die met een meerder-heid had gekozen voor het ontwerp van SeArCH, naast zich neer. De vier andere bureaus, Claus en Kaan, Mecanoo, Meyer en Van Schooten en SeArCH, spanden een kort geding aan en eisten dat de beoordeling van de ontwerpen zou worden overgedaan. De gemeente zou zich niet hebben gehouden aan de eisen van transparantie en objectiviteit, die gelden bij een aanbestedingspro-cedure. Het ontwerp van OMA

zou door het gebruik van peper-duur bouwmateriaal onherroepe-lijk tot grote kostenoverschrijding leiden. Ook zouden er grote procedurele fouten zijn gemaakt: de gemeente zou na sluiting van de inzending nog aan het ontwerp van OMA hebben gesleuteld, omdat het ontwerp in eerste instantie te duur bleek. De rechter oordeelde vervolgens dat het niet aannemelijk was dat het gebouw duurder zal uitvallen. Bovendien zag een onderzoekscommissie ook in de ontwerpen van Claus en Kaan, Mecanoo en SeArCH risico’s met betrekking tot de financiële haalbaarheid.Leentje Volker, promovendus aan de tU Delft en medeorganisator van de Building for Bouwkunde prijsvraag, focuste in haar promotieonderzoek op de aanbe-stedingsproblematiek, en heeft voor haar onderzoek verschillende aanbestedingen op de voet gevolgd. Volker beschijft dat zij in veel gevallen pas na zeer veel moeite werd toegelaten tot het

proces van aanbestedingen en dat is volgens haar dan ook direct één van de grote problemen. ‘Er is niet of nauwelijks transparantie in de procedures omdat men teveel vreest voor rechtszaken.’ trans-parantie in de besluitvorming zou kunnen leiden tot een hogere mate van objectiviteit, maar heeft ook een verhoogde kwetsbaar-heid voor de opdrachtgever tot gevolg. Volker pleit voor meer openheid omdat in veel verschil-lende aanbestedingen steeds dezelfde fouten worden gemaakt. ‘Door van in het verleden gemaak-te fouten te leren, kunnen aanbestedingen in de toekomst beter verlopen. Er moet duidelijk zijn welke fouten precies zijn gemaakt. Nu blijft dit nog vaak binnenskamers.’ Dit is ook een van de redenen dat Volker het initiatief heeft geno-men om een symposium over de huidige aanbestedingsproblema-tiek, genaamd Opdrachtgever zoekt architect, te organiseren . Het symposium richt zich op alle partijen die mogelijk bij een aanbesteding betrokken zijn. ‘De organistie wil een wetenschappe-lijke discussie voeren over professioneel opdrachtgeverschap in de context van Europese aanbestedingsregels. De vraag hoe aanbestedingen in de toekomst beter kunnen worden

Jildou KliJnsma and Carlos Castillo – [4:69am] arChiteCten ‘sometimes it feels like we started off totally unprepared, and we still haven’t actually got enough knowledge to complete a full project,' jildou Klijnsma and Carlos Castillo remark with smiles on their faces, when we meet to talk about the beginnings of their architectural office [4:69 AM] Architecten. they started by creating a website and formula�ting a strong design vision. next to that they had to officially register at the Chamber of Commerce, buy computers, software licenses and so on. ‘We were confident about being strong designers, but it’s amazing how much more you need to succeed than just the things you learned in university. every step we take in our current projects is completely new for us, but it’s great to experience the positive and enthusiastic reactions of people we ask for help. Because that’s what we do, we use our network. And it works, if you're just not afraid to ask.’ Castillo remembers that most people were surprised to learn that he and his wife Klijnsma would be starting their own architectural office. the naysayers said we would never manage, especially during the crisis. ‘i strongly believe that this attitude

is based on a cultural difference. dutch people seem to worry all the time and concentrate on the opinion of others way too much. Why should you always be afraid to fail? We went for it, and if we fail, well than we just start over again.’ ‘every project we do originates from our network in one way or another. We did a house exten�sion for a client we met at the Tango, a bar in delft, and are preparing several projects for a client in France, we came in contact with through a photogra�photogra�pher friend of ours. Castillo is from Chile and always planned to start his own office after graduation. Klijnsma graduated two years earlier and started working for the real estate & housing department as there was a job opening at the time and they could use the money. especially considering the fact that Castillo couldn't work on a student visa. A few months after Castillo graduated they started their own office. ‘We chose the netherlands because i graduated at the tU delft with a very high mark. i thought this would help us get off to a flying start. if it doesn't work out then plan B is to go to Chile, live there, start over, and teach.’ For Klijnsma, remaining patient is the most difficult part of having their own office. ‘We have had and continue to have those uncertain moments in which we realize that we really need a project to come in or otherwise

we'll be out of money. We almost decided to go to Chile several times, but up till things have always worked out at the right moment. you just have to wait and see. it’s a very uncertain though free feeling to be your own boss and to be able to work the way you want to work. you can say that we're like kids trying to play with grown�up things. i’m sure we've picked stuff up that you’ll never get when you start off working for a big architectural company.’

simon de ruiJter – rarWhen the work dried up at the firm he was working for as a result of the economic crisis and his contract was not renewed in the summer of 2009, simon de ruijter decided to start his own company. the fact that he had done hts Bouwkunde (HTS is the Dutch higher technical school where the Architecture course is taught on a more practical level.) as well as university gave him en extra edge as he was able to do both design as well as detailing work. he knows one thing that is necessary in having your own business: being able to build and use your network. ‘i can definitely say about myself that i really like making new contacts thereby creating opportunities’. these traits have kept a steady stream of work coming in to his 6�month old design company. After graduation in 2007 he looked for work at architect’s offices. the

economic crisis had not yet struck at the time. he quickly found a position as a designer at a well�known firm in rotterdam. ‘Architecture is a hands�on trade, something that you learn by doing. Looking over the shoulder of more experienced architects and bouncing ideas off of each other in a design team was what i was looking for in my first job.’ his hope for a design team experi�ence was short�lived however: ‘though the firm i was working for did interesting and challen�ging projects, as the ‘new kid’ i was too often left to my own devices and didn’t get the kind of guidance i was hoping for. i was thrown in the deep end and often had to guess what was expected of me. the lack of communication and everybody doing their own thing at times led to misunder�standings and improperly worked out assignments.’ though the times were often tough for a designer just starting out, he has remained positive throughout. this positivism as well as an abundance of energy and enthou�siasm were necessary for the step to full�time freelance work. the work didn’t roll in overnight however. the foundations had been laid years earlier during his studies when he would occasion�ally do drawings for acquaintan�ces. he laughs, ‘i pretty much told everyone i knew that i was intere�sted in doing freelance work.’ At this time he also did a Feng shui course which led to a couple of jobs. ‘i followed the path that was

redesign of a farmhouse, which is being constructed at the moment. ‘i got involved in these projects by chance, so from the outset i was self�employed. this offered me the possibility to choose my future workplace very carefully.’ six months after graduating with a combined Architecture and Building technology masters, Van sabben started working at Hootsmans Architectuurbureau in Amsterdam. ‘they offered me the opportunity to work on the façade of a very complex project, namely the new Court of justice in Zwolle. it was very important for me to work in an office where i could combine architecture with my interest for building techno�logy. it’s always important to choose your office with care as it should definitely fit your design style. it’s pointless to work on projects that you don't actually like.’After finishing the project at Hootsmans, Van sabben moved to Imagine Group, the office of Ulrich Knaack, for whom he already worked during his studies. Knaack is a professor at the Faculty of Architecture and his office is specialized in complex façade technology. ‘i always had in mind that i would work for several offices in the beginning of my career. it’s interesting to experience different working styles.’ Looking back, it was a smart choice up till now. i worked on very interesting projects at good offices.’ Van sabben has been working for Cepezed in delft for a year now and it really suits him. ‘i have the opportunity to work on big and challenging projects, which focus on building technology and sustainability.’ next to his work for Cepezed he teaches in the Bachelor program at the Faculty of Architecture. ‘i really enjoy it and at the same time it's a very valuable experi�ence. if there is time left, i work on competitions with friends from the university, like the Building for Bouwkunde competition.’i always had and still have the idea of eventually starting my own office, but at the moment i find working on a contract basis the best choice. A great advan�tage is the opportunity to work on big and complex projects. you learn a lot about how an office works, and the work is challen�ging. it’s not likely that you’ll start with that if you have an office of your own.

Solar Decathlon is originally a US Department of Energy sponsored competiton between 20 universi-ties, aimed at designing and building a 100% solar powered, sustainable and forward-looking dwelling. In the year 2010, this competition was brought to Europe for the first time, sponso-red by the Spanish Ministry of Housing, and the first fully solar powered houses were built.

Now, TU Delft wants to assemble its own interdisciplinary team in order to join the 2012 competition in Madrid. The brief: a 75 m2 home that uses solar energy to provide for its electricity and hot water. In addition, each home must function as a micro power-plant, meaning it generates more energy than it uses. Other important aspects of the design include marketability (price as well as aesthetics) and the ease of assembly. At the end of the competition, all twenty teams will build their designs and exhibit them to the public, exactly as in the US, where the different houses were on display at the National Mall in Washington DC.

For this endeavour, the Building Technology department and the Energy Club is looking to put

together a dedicated team of 25 to 30 students with different backgrounds not only within, but also outside the Faculty of Architecture, as a very wide range of knowledge is necessary to build such a house. And not only knowledge about building techniques, materials or the modern way of life is needed. In order to make this project financially viable and known to the public, people responsible for sponsoring and PR are also needed. And on top of that, due to the competition being held in Madrid, the TU team hopes to have some members that speak Spanish. These would help not only with the actual organisation of things in Madrid, but also double as tour guides for the Spanish-speaking visitors.

The department of Building Technology aims to integrate the Solar Decathlon into its curricu-lum, so that students that participate can receive ECTS for their hard work: BT candidates can use them for their research and design project and other students can receive 12 ECTS. For receiving them, they should join the “design challenge”, organized by the centre of entrepeneurship on designchallenge.tudelft.nl .

In principle the project lasts for two years. The process is broken down into five phases: each phase lasting about five months. The first registration deadline is September 9th. For students who

cannot meet that deadline, it is possible to join the team in a later phase. Students register for a minimum period of six months, but if they want to continue after that, that is of course possible.

So after the world-famous Nuna Solar Car and Marine Techno-logy’s Solar Boat, Bouwkunde now finally has its own solar powered project. If this project is going to be as high-profile and as widely covered as the previous two examples, the faculty is certainly in for a treat. As the registration posters read: “We conquered the racing frontier!It’s time to compete for homes in Europe!”

The Sense and Non-sense of Numerus Fixus

When I became a student in the fall of 2007 very little was required to get accepted. Getting into the architecture program was easy, all I had to do was pass high school and have taken the right subjects. That year, about 540 of us came to the Faculty of Archi-tecture, though we were promptly warned that half of us would not make it past that one year. All was well.

Crisis coupled with long term policy changes brought the BSa (Bindend Studieadvies- Binding Study Advice) measure in 2009, which is meant to eliminate the first year Bachelor students that are not performing adequately. The first year will become a sort of filter in which the unmotivated will be eliminated, so that they don't waste the faculty's resources during a second or a third year before eventually dropping out.

However, it seems like this is not enough for the school manage-ment. Even more savings need to be achieved, so more students need to be eliminated. Funnily enough, this reminds me of the headmistress in the film adapta-tion of Roald Dahl's “Matilda” which goes on to say that the perfect school is “one without children”.

There would be two student selection rounds. The first round would involve “gewogen loting” (loosely translated as “weighed random selection”) in which applicants' final high school results would be taken into account. I see this as a sort of “random of best” (instead of “best of random”). However, high school grades indicate very little about motivation to study in general and the motivation to study architecture in particular. So while it would stem the flow of students getting in, it would not necessarily reduce the percentage of students dropping out, conside-ring the fact that our faculty is in

many cases the waiting room for people who did not get randomly selected for medicine. Should these students reapply for medicine after their first year of architecture and be selected, it is quite likely they will drop out anyway.

The second selection round would consist of a test that would examine the “designing qualities and spatial understanding” of the candidates: seemingly reasonable but (alas) fatally flawed. While we should expect that architects possess spatial understanding and are able to go through a design process, we cannot expect objective results from this test.

First of all, very few of these aspiring students have been exposed to any design courses as the faculty does not require students to have a background in art and design, but one in natural and social sciences. Secondly, our faculty is not only about architec-ture but rather “Architecture, Urbanism and Building sciences” with each field having a different emphasis not only on spatial qualities, but also technology, planning, management and social sciences. To disqualify a potenti-ally great building manager/theorist/planner for perhaps having less spatial insight than the pur-sang architect is unjust. Thirdly, the faculty is plastered with posters which proclaim “Ontwerpen kan je leren” (“You can learn to design”). Talk about hypocrisy.

If we really need to limit the amount of first year Bachelor students, there are other measu-res that could be implemented to filter out the unmotivated in a fair manner.

First of all, if the academic bar needs to be raised, let us raise the bar overall: from 6 to 6.5 on the candidates' high school subjects, for example. Let us demand a minimal background in arts & design (perhaps in the form of a subject or an extra-curricular activity in this field).

Furthermore, let the faculty discuss the usefulness and above all the effectiveness of the BSa. We might want to raise the bar here as well, for instance rather than having to complete 30 ECTs a student would have to complete 35 ECTs by the end of Bsc 2.

While these measures might seem tougher, at least they are objec-tive an universal. Everyone should have the opportunity to study architecture if they are commited enough. Random selection and biased tests will not not solve any problems in our paradise.

Ceciel van Rinsum, BSc6I am not against plans to limit the number of first year students. I just do not think that the current proposal, part of which is random selection is a good idea. In this way, you can leave out the really motiva-ted people. I think a letter of motivation would work better.

Marjolein Elenbaas, International OfficeAs an outsider, I see that there are simply too many students here to provide the optimal level of education and facilities, therefore I think it's quite logical to limit the number of students that will attend this faculty.

Mirela Milosevic, BSc 6 On one hand, there the financial and qualitative argument, which makes limiting the number of students necessary. On the other hand, a part of the selection is supposed to be based tests that will test designing capabilities, which people don't really have when they leave high school. So how will they choose who gets through?

Diego Sepulveda, Urbanism I think the faculty needs to implement these measures for its future. There is a financial crisis now, and with the rising number of stu-dents, it becomes increasin-gly difficult to provide the quality of education that we strive for.

Lao ZhongNan, MSc 3 Architecture I am suportive of the measure. In China there are so many people that selection of students is normal. Also, it is the faculty's duty to the MSc and international students to provide the best possible education and space; we do pay quite a lot of money to study here.

wouden, vormt het de hoofdstad van de traditionele Ashanti cultuur. elf studenten van

Architectuur en Urbanism zagen het als een uitdaging

om hier hun afstudeerproject te verwezenlijken. Afgelopen maand juli heeft het veldwerk plaatsge-vonden en zijn we op avontuur getrokken.

het karakter van de stad Kumasi komt het meest tot uitdrukking in het centrum. De binnenstad staat in het teken van vervoer en handel. het hart van de stad is de grootste markt van West Afrika, de Kejetia market. ernaast ligt een even indrukwekkend bussta-tion en aan de andere kant een verlaten treinstation.De markt is de bestemming voor iedereen die inkopen wil doen. De artikelen variëren van levensmid-delen tot huishoudelijke spullen en kantoorbenodigdheden. Zo sta je de veelkleurige stoffen te bewonderen terwijl er een koeienkop op een schouder wordt langs gedragen en je bijna struikelt over de in piramidevorm opgestapelde sinaasappels.

De handel blijft niet besloten tot de centrale markt. iedereen wil iets verdienen en gaat daarom verkopen. het treinstation transformeert zich vanzelf tot een informele markt. De straten slibben dicht. De stoep wordt gebruikt als marktruimte en de voetgangers gaan aan de andere kant van de goot lopen. op de weg moeten zij toeterende auto’s en minibusjes ontwijken. Vanuit je autoraam is het niet moeilijk om een groot deel van je

boodschappen te doen. Zoveel mensen lopen tussen de auto’s met hun verschillende koopwaar. Van water tot beltegoed, van stropdassen tot ijsjes, van speelgoed tot wc-papier en van de krant tot autovlaggetjes.

er wordt beweerd dat er dagelijks een populatie is van ruim een half miljoen mensen die buiten de stad wonen en elke dag de stad in trekken om iets proberen te verdienen.Daarnaast trekken veel mensen uit het noorden naar Kumasi, wat een extra stijging van het aantal permanente inwoners teweeg-brengt. een deel van die mensen komt uit tamale, de belangrijkste stad in het noorden.

Zo’n tien kilometer ten oosten van het centrum ligt de Kwame nkrumah University of techno-logy (KnUst). een uitgestrekte groene campus die tevens de verblijfplaats was tijdens ons veldwerk, de samenwerking met andere studenten en gedurende de laatste WK-wedstrijden. er zijn naast de faculteit voor architec-tuur en stadsplanning veel andere opleidingen, zoals kunst- en sociale wetenschappen, genees-kunde, landbouwstudies en veel technische wetenschappen.Ayigya is een buitenwijk tegen-over de KnUst-campus en het onderwerp van een uitgebreid onderzoek van het institute for housing studies (ihs) aan de erasmus universiteit, rotterdam. De samenwerking met de ihs is de start geweest voor ons project.De wijk Ayigya is opgedeeld in een christelijk en een moslim gedeelte; twee geloofsgroepen die net als elders in het land heel goed naast elkaar leven. Beide gedeeltes hebben een eigen chief, maar kampen met dezelfde problemen zoals overbevolking in

de woningen (soms wonen er 70 mensen in één compound), erosie in de straten, weinig werkgele-genheid in de wijk en gebrek aan een aansluiting op water of elektriciteit.tegelijkertijd biedt de wijk een uitdaging om samen met andere subcentres het centrum te ontlasten, en liggen er kansen voor de ontwikkeling van duur-zame woningen, urban agricul-ture en het oprichten van een skill centre.

Duurzaamheid is een belangrijk kenmerk van traditionele bouw-methoden. Vandaag worden leem en klei vaak vervangen door meer westerse materialen. Beton en glas geven nieuwe gebouwen een moderne uitstraling. De oude gebouwen worden steeds meer vervangen door nieuwbouw.ook het gemeentebestuur heeft grote plannen. er zijn voorstellen om te investeren in satellietmark-ten in de hoop dat deze mensen hun inkopen niet meer in het centrum doen. De markt barst uit zijn voegen. het busstation levert een constant gevecht om ruimte met de markt. het is te klein voor de stroom mensen die iedere dag van en naar de markt willen. het gemeentebestuur kwam met een tussenoplossing. De verkopers die het verkeer belemmerden werden verplaatst naar een braakliggend terrein. in een koloniaal verleden was dit de race course. momen-teel is dit een voedselmarkt en de eerste stop voor veel mensen uit het noorden die daar hun heil zoeken.

De charme van imperfectie Het begon waarschijnlijk op de lagere school. Kreeg ik van de ‘juf’ een nieuw schrift, dan was mijn vastbesloten voornemen om dit van begin tot eind ‘schoon’ vol te schrijven. De eerste bladzij, stabiel op de dikte van de navolgende, beschreef ik meestal evenwichtig, maar de achterkant van deze bladzij, gesteund door slechts het dunne kaft, voelde al minder aangenaam en leidde dan tot de eerste vlek, doorhaling of verkeerde inschatting van het einde van de regel. De frustra-tie van de eerste fout ondermijnde dan verder mijn behoefte het schrift een kunstwerk te laten worden. Met ieder nieuw schrift herhaalde zich het ritueel en de mislukking. Verderop in mijn leven bleek ieder product, dat met de beste bedoelingen door mij was begonnen, nooit volledig perfect de eindstreep te halen.Mensen zoeken, vooral in hun onzekere jonge jaren, steun bij congruentie met anderen en in het bijzonder troost in de herkenning van onvolko-menheden van anderen. Is niet de mate waarin wij afwijken van of juist samenval-len met ‘de ideale mens’ precies dat wat we als karakter bestempelen? Beschouw ik daarom graag de imperfectie van de medemens en zijn creaties? Meer expliciet: zoek ik daarom, nu als architect, gebouwen, die om welke reden dan ook, kenmerken vertonen afwij-kend van de vooropgezette spelregels zoals die na analyse als leidend herkend kunnen worden?Een weekje vakantie in Frankrijk werd een feest door het bezoek aan een serie twaalfde-eeuwse kerkjes. De architectonische uitgangspun-ten van deze kerkjes zijn eenvoudig: symmetrie over de lengteas, een oneven aantal (1, 3 of 5) parallelle beuken, soms een dwarsbeuk, dikke muren, kleine rond-boogvensters, een zadeldak op de middenbeuk en kruisribgewelven in de zijbeuken. Afwijkingen van dit strenge concept zijn, zelfs voor een ongeoefend oog, na enige observatie goed te ontdekken. Is het de kwets-baarheid van rigide regels, de eindige concentratie van de bouwers, de starheid van de natuurwetten of een bewuste afleidingsmanoeuvre om het boze oog te weren? Ik weet slechts dat mijn vrouw en ik steeds opgetogen waren als we een onvolkomenheid, ‘een teken van menselijkheid’ - van imperfectie - ontdekten aan een gebouw dat voor de verering van ‘het goddelijke’ - de perfectie - gebouwd was.

beslissende factor voor lange termijn planningen. hierdoor drukt hij zijn stempel op de ruimtelijke ontwikkeling. on-macht kenmerkt de ideeën vanuit de gemeente en voor het hele

land. er is geen geld en met alle besluiten die genomen worden moet rekening gehouden worden met verschillende partijen. De problematiek is uitgegroeid tot een moeilijke opgave.

De History Wall, ‘Architec-ture and Planning in the Netherlands – 1900-2000’

Deze tentoonstellingswand werd vervaardigd op de Faculteit Bouwkunde in 2000 als onderdeel van de tentoonstelling ‘Past Modernism – three generations of Postwar Architecture in the Netherlands’ en gepresenteerd op de Architectuur Biënnale in Sao Paulo.

Sindsdien is deze chronologie op vele plaatsen in binnen- en buitenland te zien geweest. Bij de brand werd de originele versie vernietigd; een herziene versie werd daarna vervaardigd voor een presentatie in Beijing. Deze versie zal nu voor het eerst weer te zien zijn in BK City.
