DON’T LET THE PIGEON DRIVE THE BUS

The bus driver leaves his bus and tells the reader to not let the pigeon drive the bus. The pigeon begs and begs to drive the bus but never gets to. The bus driver returns and hopes that the pigeon didn’t drive the bus. Eventually a semi-truck comes along and the pigeon dreams of driving the truck.

Literature Extension Activity: Have the students draw their own version of the

pigeon and a type of vehicle that the pigeon cannot drive. Then put the pictures together and make a classroom book.

THERE WAS AN OLD LADY WHO SWALLOWED A FLY

An old lady swallowed a fly and then kept swallowing different things (cat, dog, etc.) in order to “catch” the last thing she swallowed. At the end of the book she swallows a horse and ends up dieing.

Literature Extension Activity: Print out pictures of each animal the old lady

swallows. Each child will receive a picture and while telling the story they will bring them up to the board and put them in order as the lady swallows them.

NO DAVID!

A little boy named David keeps doing things around the house that his mom does not want him to do. She keeps telling him “No, David.” At the end of the story she makes sure David knows that she loves him no matter what.

Literature Extension Activity: Have the students write their own versions of this

story with things that have happened in their own lives. Then go around the classroom and have each student share one of their “No” statements and pictures.

Overnight it had snowed and the little boy wanted to go out and play. He played in the snow and made a snowman. He made snow angels and anything else he could do outside in the snow. Once it got late he went inside and went to bed and woke up only to find more snow outside.

Literature Extension Activity: Go around the classroom and have a discussion with the

students about their favorite things to do outside when it snows. Then have each student draw a picture of them doing their favorite activity and post them up around the room.

CLICK, CLACK, MOO COWS THAT TYPE

The cows and the hens are cold so they type up letters to the farmer and demand electric blankets. Then when the farmer refuses he does not get milk or eggs from the animals. The famer eventually makes a deal to give the animals blankets in exchange for the type writer. The cows and hens are happy, but then the ducks type up a letter to the farmer and demand a diving board for their pond.

Literature Extension Activity: Have the students write a letter from an animal, either one they have

at home or one of their favorite animals. Then have the students share the letters so that the class can hear what their classmates think animals might say.

OFFICER BUCKLE AND GLORIA By: Peggy Rathmann Copyright: 1995 Category: Caldecott Synopsis:

Officer Buckle gives safety tips and no one ever listens. The police station gets a dog named Gloria. She helps get the student’s attention and demonstrate the safety tips when Officer Buckle gives his speeches. Eventually the officer thinks that no one is listening to him and they only like Gloria. Letters come flooding in that they miss him and it’s not the same without him. He then learned to never leave his friend and to stick by her side no matter what.

Literature Extension Activity: Have the students write their own safety rules for the classroom and

then post them up around the room so that every student can see them and remember what the safety rules are.

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH A TAIL LIKE THIS?

There are different pictures of parts of different animal’s bodies. The reader has to guess the animal and what the body part is used for. The author then provides information about what kind of animal the body part belongs to and what it is used for.

Literature Extension Activity: Print out pictures of each animal and give each

student an animal from the book and then have the students research something about each animal to teach to the class.

Literature Extension Activity: Have the students color a picture of a pig and give

the pig a name. Then have them write their own story about what the pig would do during the day when he/she has a lot of energy.

Max starts having a forest grow in his room one night. He travels to where the wild things are. He meets them and they make him king of the land. Eventually he decides he needs to go back home and sails back home. Once he is back home he notices that he has a hot dinner waiting for him to eat.

Literature Extension Activity: Have the students create masks so that they can be “wild

things.” Then have the students act out the book with one person being Max and the rest of the students being the “wild things.”

Despereaux is a mouse that loves music, stories, and a princess named Pea. Roscuro is a rat who lives in the dark. Miggery Sow is a serving girl with a wish. These characters go on a journey where they go down into a horrible dungeon, up into a glittering castle, and into each other’s lives.

Literature Extension Activity: Have the students watch the movie version of this book.

Have them write down all of the major similarities and differences they see between the book and the movie. Then come back as a class and discuss the things they saw.

HOLES

The Yelnats family believes in a family curse that happened years ago. The reason the family is cursed is because of Stanley’s great-great-grandfather. Stanley is convicted of a crime he didn’t commit and is sentenced to going to Camp Green Lake. At this camp they dig holes to build character, but eventually Stanley finds out why they are actually digging holes. Eventually Stanley learns new things about his family and breaks the curse without knowing it.

Literature Extension Activity: Once the students are done reading the book, have the students watch

the movie in class. While watching the movie have the students write down the differences and similarities they find between the movie and the book. Then discuss as a class what everyone has written down.

SARAH, PLAIN AND TALL Author: Patricia MacLachlan Copyright: 1985 Category: Newberry Synopsis:

A family loses their mother. The father needs help around the house and puts out an ad for a mail order bride. Sarah is the woman who eventually answers this ad and she goes and moves in with the family. She misses her life in Maine but she adapts to the prairie life and the family starts to become very close to her. The whole time you are reading you do not know if Sarah is going to stay or if she will be moving back to Maine.

Literature Extension Activity: Give each student a silhouette of a character from the book and

have them decorate it with the characteristics of that character.

Sarah Louise feels less important than her sister. She says her sister robbed her of everything: her hopes for schooling, her friends, her mother, and even her name. Literature Extension Activity: Give the students a silhouette of a character from the

story and have them draw pictures and color and explain the characteristics of the character they have.

Annemarie Johansen is a 10-year old girl living in Copenhagen during the 1940’s when the Nazis were going to “relocate” the Jews. Ellen Rosen, a neighbor of Annemarie’s, is Jewish. Annemarie’s family does everything they can to help Ellen and her family.

Literature Extension Activity: Have the students write letters as if they were either

Ellen or Annemarie. Have them write the letters as if they were writing to one another after Ellen and her family moved away. Have them share these letters with the class.

Carl the dog is left home to watch the baby. He gets the baby out of his crib. They jump on the bed. They run around the house, the baby on Carl’s back. Carl gives the baby a bath and cleans up the mess they made. He then puts the baby back to bed. Mom gets home and can’t tell that anything happened and she says, “Good Dog, Carl.”

Literature Extension Activity: After reading the book for the first time go over the story

with the students. Then read the book again and have the students tell the story from what they see in the pictures.

CARL GOES TO DAYCARE

Carl is in charge when the daycare teacher gets locked out of the classroom. Carl saves the day and teaks care of all the children in the daycare as the teacher tries to get back into the classroom.

Literature Extension Activity: Have the students think of a time when they were in

daycare or being babysat. Then have them draw pictures to tell a story about that time. Post these pictures up around the room and have the students tell a story that isn’t theirs.

create an illustration for the stories. Pick one story and post all of those pictures up around the room for everyone to see.

BEST MOTHER GOOSE EVER

A collection of all the classic Mother Goose stories with pictures from Richard Scarry. The stories are all told the same but just different illustrations accompany the stories.

Literature Extension Activity: Have the students create their own Mother Goose

type story. Once they create their story they should make an illustration to go along with the story and then share it with the class. Then put all of the stories together to make a classroom Mother Goose book.

Paul, Judy, Kay, and Gordon go on a walk on a farm and see several different animals on the walk. The child reading the book gets a chance to pet the animal because there is fur on the body of the animals in the book.

Literature Extension Activity: Have the students create their own animals out of felt or

any other kind of fabric/craft supplies they would like. Then have them tell a story about going on a walk and seeing that animal.

Teaches children the alphabet by having the letters go up to the top of a coconut tree. Once they are all up at the top they all fall out because there are too many up there.

Literature Extension Activity: Have a big palm tree on the wall and give each student a

letter of the alphabet. Once each student has a letter read the story and have the students put the letters in the tree as the story is being told.

Teaches children their ABCs through rhyming and pictures.

Literature Extension Activity: Give each child a letter of the alphabet and they

have to come up with a rhyme starting each phrase with the letter they have. Once they are done creating their rhymes they can be put around the room for everyone to see.

Teaches children their numbers (1-10) with pictures of animals equaling the number the page is on and a pull tab at the end where they can count on their own.

Literature Extension Activity: Give each student cutouts of the animals from the

book. Make sure the cutouts are black and white so the students can color them. While the book is being read the students can put the animals in order they come in the book and count along with the story.

Teaches children how to count, 1-10, using pictures and rhyming. The books ends with a chance for the child to count something themselves.

Literature Extension Activity: Give the children some type of food (M&Ms, Goldfish,

etc.) and have them group them into the amount that would equal the number while reading the book. Then once the book is done being read go over the numbers again and have the students repeat, except this time do not go in numerical order.

This book goes through all the colors that make a rainbow. At the end it says “Now you know what makes a rainbow: rain, colors…, and sunshine.”

Literature Extension Activity: Once the children know all of the colors of the

rainbow have them make their own rainbows and make sure they have everything else to show how a rainbow is made.

This book shows different parts of clothing and asks what body part is hidden by that piece of clothing. The child lifts up the picture of the clothing to reveal the body part and its name written under the flap.

Literature Extension Activity: Once the children know the different parts of clothing

and the body parts they cover, go around the room and have each student point out something they are wearing and what it is covering.

THE FAT CAT SAT ON THE MAT

The fat cat sits on the rat’s mat. Throughout the story the rat tries to find different ways to get the cat off of his mat. The cat will not budge, not even for a meal of delicious fish.

and a cat and have the students think of new ways for the rat to try and get the cat off the mat.

This book goes through the good and the bad things about being a president. The book also talks about the different presidents we have had over the years and how if you want to be president you might have to go through things they did, or have the same name they have, etc.

important information about the presidents. Then have them create an illustration of the president to be hung up around the room. Have the students hang up the pictures in chronological order.

what it would be like if that animal was in the library. They can make their own story like Dewey’s but just with a different animal.

Rosa Parks fought for equal rights for blacks. She sat in the front of a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. This seat was meant for a white person, but she refused to move. She started the fight for equal rights for blacks. This book tells a lot about Rosa Parks’ life before and after this event occurred.

Literature Extension Activity: Have the students create a timeline of Rosa Parks’ life.

Have them start from when she was really young to the oldest they can find information on her about. Have them only record what they believe are important times in her life.

JACKIE ROBINSON

and what Jackie Robinson did for the sport. Have the students share the information with the class.

Everyone loved him and he got noticed for doing crazy things other musicians wouldn’t even want to try.

Literature Extension Activity: After reading this book have the children listen to jazz

music. Once the children have experienced jazz music have them research some famous jazz musicians and share their information with the class.

Ruby had the chance to go to an all white school. At this time black kids and white kids went to separate schools. She had to be brought into school by federal marshals. She was a good student and nothing bothered her, even the people who stood outside of the school protesting. Everyday when Ruby was on her way to school she would pray for the mob standing outside of the school.

Literature Extension Activity: Once the story has been read have the students put events

in the order they happened in the book. Create a list of events to give to the students so that they can put them in order.

solve this mystery and what they think is going on at the school and in the fraternity.

Nancy Drew is trying to solve the case of cyber bullying that has been going on. She believes she knows who the people are that are committing this crime but she is wondering if she is being lead down a false trail. She has to deal with all the troubles of the internet and finding out who truly committed this crime.

Literature Extension Activity: Have the students research cyber bullying. Make sure

they understand what cyber bullying is and how dangerous it truly can be. Have the students create a poster about cyber bullying and how to prevent this from happening to others.

Poems are all about animals such as: dogs, cats, rats, ferrets, and many others. They are all wacky poems the author made up. There is also a free audio download along with this book where the author will sing and read his poems.

Literature Extension Activity: Have each student pick an animal and write a wacky poem

about that animal. Nothing in the poem has to be true, they can just use their imagination for this poem. Then have them create an illustration to go along with the poem.

These are all poems, short stories, word games, etc. about things everyone wonders about. Poems are about things such as: why does dad make such good pancakes?

Literature Extension Activity: Have the students write down things they wonder about.

Then go around the room and share all the things they wonder about. Have the students write a poem, short story, or anything they want about one of the things they wonder about. Once everyone is done put their creations together into a classroom wonder book.


Recommended
