The Book Itself

The book Bud Not Buddy is full of hardships. These make this book very interesting and give it many cliffhangers and emotional changes. If you are a person who loves always being “ON EDGE” this is a good book for you.

BudThroughout the story Bud Not Buddy you are following the story of Bud Caldwell. Bud’s mother who was deceased many years ago due to illness is gone and without her all he has are his suitcase and his “special things” he has in it. Without his mother he must go on a quest to find his missing father. Through this quest he meets his old friend from “The Home” Bugs. He meets Deza Malone from Hoover Ville , and he meets his so called “father” Herman E. Calloway.

Herman E. CallowayHerman E. Calloway Bud’s thought to be father is just a mean old grump. Herman is bald, Negro and a “big bellied” man. His band may be great, but his attitude towards Bud is terrible. He constantly accuses Bud of stealing or spying on him. He very rarely talks to Bud but when he does it’s never for the sake of conversation. Bud really doesn’t “like him” too much either. But what Bud finds out in the end may change that for good.

Bugs

One of Bud’s best friends from “the home” Bugs is a great character. He got his name from well, bugs! One day at the home Bugs got a cockroach stuck in his ear. It took hours to do but eventually the workers got the roach out. That’s how he got his name. His role in the story is very important, he’s the one who took Bud to the Hoover Ville. Once he gets on the train though he’s gone for good. Bud misses the train and now may never see Bugs again.

Lefty Lewis

Lefty Lewis is another very important character. He helps Bud in many ways. He drove Bud from flint to Ossowa. He took Bud home and fed him delicious meals. And best of all he drove Bud to his “father”, Herman E. Calloway . He plays a big part in the story but I think he’s just more of a porter for Bud. Lefty Lewis looks like a tall man from the military.

Setting

The setting of this story plays a huge part. With this story taking place during the great depression, it shows how giving people can be to the less fortunate. Also since it takes place in Michigan the Negro population is let’s just say “less respected”.

Internal and External ConflictOne of Bud’s worst

external conflicts was missing the train with Bugs. Because I don’t know anything worse than loosing your best friend. Especially when you don’t‘ have any others

Bud’s biggest external conflict is to get along with Herman. While he knows he’s going to have to get along with him, he just can’t get over the fact that Herman just doesn’t like him.

Beginning Plot

The beginning plot of Bud not Buddy first takes place in “the home” (orphanage). Bud is in a line to get some food when he is told some family called the Amos would like to adopt him. But when he goes to their house he meets a mean kid that’s a few years older then him. The boy’s name is Todd Amos and they get in a fight with each other. Next thing you know Bud’s sent outside to sleep in their shed! There’s dead fish hanging from the door and even a beehive hanging from the ceiling! But Bud somehow mistakes the beehive for a VAMPIRE! In doing this he tries to hit the “vampire” with a rake. The bees get angry start to sting him so he books it out a window. Now he’s a lone kid living on the street with no family.

Middle Plot

Now Bud is out roaming the open streets on a mission to find his TRUE father. Along the way he meets back up with his old pal Bugs. They decide they'll ride a train to a different area to just get away but they stop at a Hoover Ville first. There Bud and Bugs meet some nice families, they also meet a girl around their age named Deza Malone. She gives Bud his first kiss and they become good friends. But, the next day the camp is raided by police officers and everyone scatters. Finally because of this Bud and Bugs flee to the train. But when the train starts going and Bugs hops on, Bud misses his chance and sadly cannot catch up to the train to get on. So once again Bud is alone on the streets.

Ending PlotLefty Lewis was a huge help to Bud with picking him up off the highway

and feeding him. But when he dropped Bud of at Herman E. Calloway's cabin he may not have known it but he changed Bud's life forever. When Bud met Herman that day Herman just seemed like a grump. And truthfully he was still like that for the next few days. But the band Bud met was nice they all just wanted to help him out. They even brought him to a fancy restaurant for dinner! Although Bud did cry he had a great time with the band. Steady Eddie the saxophone player even got Bud a recorder to practice with!!! But the next day with the mention of Bud's special rocks to Herman and throughout an argument with Herman the rest of the day Herman cried. With the rest of the band questioning Bud about his mother and what she was like. Everyone came to this final conclusion.

Herman E. Calloway IS Buds GRANDFATHER!!!!!!!!
