2 Brief Summary
The BA (Hons) Languages, Linguistics & TESOL programme offers routes in Modern Standard Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Urdu, Linguistics, and TESOL. Depending on the individual subject, single honours, joint honours or major-minor combinations are available. The programme is also home to a range of Combined Honours routes, which offers degrees in combination with other subjects.
All of the Modern Languages routes are open to complete beginners of the foreign language. Further, the programme fosters cross-cultural awareness and intercultural insight for students of all subjects at all weightings and levels of study.
Students on the programme have the opportunity to explore the linguistic, cultural, social, historical and political dimensions of the languages and countries studied.

Compensation Students taking a language unit as optional
Students taking a language unit as optional shall receive
compensated passes in whole units up to a total value of 30
credits at levels 3, 4, 5 and 6 where they achieve a weighted
average mark in the Marginal Fail category (30% to 39%) for
the summative assessment(s) within that unit, and have achieved
an overall average of 40% or greater across the full 120 credits
of the level of study. However, a student compensated in this
way in an optional language unit will be excluded from taking
optional units in that same language at a higher level, unless
they achieve a unit mark of at least 35%. Where a student is eligible for compensation in units amounting
to more than 30 credits, the unit(s) with the highest average
mark(s) shall receive a compensated pass up to the total of 30
credits. Where the application of compensation at Level 6 would
have a detrimental impact on a student’s final degree
classification, the student shall be entitled to undertake re-
assessment. Compensation shall be applied on the first occasion
that a student becomes eligible for it, subject to the above
criteria. Students with an incomplete credit profile for a
particular level of study will not be considered for

Trinity College London. We are at Stage 2 of the validation process (through Trinity College London) to become a provider of Trinity CertTESOL. At Stage 1, the organisational fact file was accepted, and the documentation for stage 2 was sent in October 2016. It is anticipated that accreditation will take place in due course. The National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL). In September 2016, we gained approval to deliver a degree (jointly with the Faculty of Education) with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) for French and Spanish.

24 Programme Rationale
The rationale for this proposal is framed within four key areas linked to the university strategic vision and aims.
The new programme title (BA Languages, Linguistics and TESOL, or BALLT) includes all individual subject areas and foregrounds the role of growth areas (Linguistics and TESOL).
2. Enhance employability
This proposal fits with the university’s mission to - place quality and employability as our top priorities - produce effective independent learners […] in graduate level jobs - triple the number of study abroad students
2.1 Professional accreditation
We are offering students the option to obtain TESOL Certification on completion of units TESOL 1 and 2. This will: (a) enable graduates to work as qualified English language teachers internationally; (b) significantly improve the attractiveness of the programme for potential applicants; (c) positively impact on our DLHE stats, accelerating the upward trend. Accreditation
takes place through Trinity College London, and students on the accredited course exit with a Trinity CerTESOL (an internationally recognised initial teacher training qualification).
Additionally, through this review we are introducing an ‘opt-in’ pathway in Spanish and
French Single and Major honours, which leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The pathway is run in cooperation with the Faculty of Education. This enhancement delivers all the outcomes listed above, including graduate employability, attractiveness of the programme, and positive impact on the DLHE stats for the department. Accreditation through this route takes place through the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL).
2.2 Named Interpreting and Translation pathway
We are introducing a named Interpreting and Translation route (for French and Spanish), which develops from the provision already in approval at L5 and L6 and is accessible from L5. This will: (a) attract students to a programme with a visible professional element; (b) provide key professional skills that lead to graduate employment.
2.3 Work or study abroad From 2016 entry, minor honours students studying a language with a Business School subject have the opportunity to spend some or all of their third year on a work placement (provided and managed by MMUBS) or studying abroad through existing study abroad networks.1 From 2017, in the interest of comparability of student experience, we suggest to expand the opportunity of a sandwich year to minor honours students from all other subject combinations, through existing or developing links (subject to the agreement of relevant HoDs).
2.4 Professional work placement

We are introducing an optional L5 placement unit to enable students to work in schools or other organisations for one term. This will: (a) allow students to develop key professional skills; (b) build students’ confidence; (c) provide routes into graduate employment. Training is provided prior to the placement, through the Faculty’s ‘Schools Outreach Ambassador Scheme’.
2.5 All units are designed to include professional and employability-related skills and outcomes, measured through unit specific learning outcomes and assessment strategies. The department is engaging with the central Employer-Curricula Pipeline Project to access support in the area of curriculum-employer engagement. That enables the programme to respond quickly to new or changing demands from employers and also allows for a more employer-facing curriculum.
3. Ensure parity of student experience in the languages provision
This proposal fits with the university’s vision to place students first, and with departmental and faculty ambition to achieve the highest levels of student satisfaction. BALP currently specifies 2 contact hours per week for some minor route students, and 3 contact hours per week for others. In practice, the department compensates for this structural anomaly by providing an additional, “unsanctioned” third hour where necessary. This is a temporary, localised, unofficial arrangement, so (a) not all students benefit from it; (b) it does not register on official university timetables or on KIS data; (c) attendance cannot be monitored effectively. In addition, the anomaly has potential effects on learning outcomes and proven negative effects on student satisfaction (as reported in ISS). Our solution to this problem is to ensure that parity in contact hours is embedded in the programme specification. We are harmonising contact hours across all languages: Uniwide languages’ contact time are increased to 3 hours a week. The additional hour includes elements of peer-to-peer learning, delivered through sessions led by the 30cr students (e.g. reporting in class on the findings of their research for their projects) and constituting the distinctive element between the 30cr and 15cr versions of unit.2 This change enhances student satisfaction, improves progression and engagement, and ensures the university meets its commitment to provide an equitable experience for all students. NB: This change has no financial impact at all, but formalises an existing practice, ensures accuracy of reporting information for internal and external monitoring purposes, and improves the student experience.
4. Ensure financial sustainability This proposal fits with the university’s aims to remain financially sustainable and achieve a balanced budget. (a) We are rationalising entry levels so entrants start language courses as Beginners
(including Foundation Year), Post-Beginners, Post-GCSE, or Post-A-level. This streamlines provision, eliminates the risk of unsustainability, and guarantees consistency of language competence on exit.
(b) We are extending entry at beginner level to French. This contributes to the rationalisation in (a) above and safeguard our numbers against the decrease in number of students taking A level languages.
(c) We are improving recruitment on TESOL and Linguistics routes by offering professional accreditation (see 2 above).

Section 5: Minor Subjects MINOR LANGUAGES Minor Language study is available for Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Urdu [A, C, F, G, I, J, S, U]. They can be chosen with French (except F), Spanish (except S), Linguistics or TESOL and a variety of other Combined Honours subjects. Recruitment to minor languages is possible at all levels of language competency (Beginners, Threshold, Intermediate, Advanced, Proficiency, Mastery). It is expected that students progress one language level per year of study, so the highest level to be recruited to is Advanced (B2). Because students start to major/minor at level 5, they take 60 credits of the minor language at level 4 (see also Section 3: Major Subjects) Level 4

Section 6: Language with QTS The route leading to Qualified Teacher Status is open to students studying French and/or Spanish, as Single or Major Honours. The first year of the programme offers the full suite of undergraduate languages units as in the Single/Major Honours pathways, and embeds school taster sessions and school experience opportunities, designed to enable students to develop a sense of what teaching languages in school entails. The option to take the QTS route is offered from L5, subject to a number of restrictions.
The second year of the programme is where the QTS route diverges from the normal undergraduate route. The core differences are:
a. An earlier start to the year, enabling students to access the QTS programme in the Faculty of Education and preparing students for school placements. Students will then take 90 credit Languages units and 30 credit Education Studies units, devoted to aspects of educational theory and classroom practice e.g. how children learn, the psychology of adolescence, the national curriculum.
b. A Block A placement, which begins at the end of the exam cycle plus an additional short placement. This placement will include attachment to a primary school (3 days) and will form part of the 120 day requirement.
c. An assessment of student performance and progress in the placement that evaluates suitability for the next year of the QTS route.
To those students who do not complete their Block A placement successfully, two options will be offered:
a) To revert to the non-QTS Languages programme in year 3; or
b) To repeat the placement at the nest available opportunity (which will be at the same time the following year)
The choice of option will be done in consultation with tutors, taking into consideration the reason for the failure in the placement, in case they suggest unsuitability for the teaching profession.
Students spend the third year abroad (approx. 35 weeks) either studying in partner universities or working as language assistants in schools, currently with the British Council. Their language competence grows exponentially as a result of this experience. In addition, those who succeed in their application for language assistantships greatly enhance their understanding of the pedagogy of teaching languages.
In their fourth and final year, engagement is as follows:
a. Faculty of Education: students take modules in the pedagogy of languages, e.g., the teaching of grammar; vocabulary; the importance of intercultural awareness. Students explore professional issue such as behaviour management, the Prevent and safeguarding agenda and engage in the second set of school placement activities in partnership schools. The total number of days in school over the two years will exceed 120 days, as required by the Secretary of State’s ITT criteria, thus providing our students with a richer and
more intensive experience prior to entering the profession. A final review at the end of the placement will decide on recommendation for the award of QTS. Placements that have not been completed successfully will have to be repeated the following year.
b. Department of Languages: students take 60 CATS of subject specific modules and produce an independent project, e.g. a reflective account of their learning experience in the classroom.
This comprehensive programme ensures that students are classroom proficient and ready; prepared in areas such as classroom management, special needs, equality and diversity, and that they couple professional expertise with a thorough knowledge of their subject.

The team strives to research and apply of information about the current and possible future career prospects of our graduates in a number of ways. We make use of data to identify graduate destinations. Most of the information we have on our alumni is supplied by the Graduate Employment Marketing Statistics. In 2009-10, 13% of languages graduates were employed as managers or senior officials, or were in professional occupations. Around 46% were employed in associate professional and technical occupations, or administrative and secretarial occupations. Around 27% were in sales or customer service occupations. In 2014-15, 54% of languages graduates were employed in graduate jobs, of which 40% decided for a teaching career or other educational profession. This trend towards a career in education is also evident in the fact that of those opting to obtain a postgraduate qualification, about 44% choose a course that leads to a teaching qualification. As a result, two professional accreditations are introduced to the undergraduate curriculum. From 2017-18 onwards, students can choose to study French or Spanish with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The status allows graduates to enter the professional market more quickly and provides excellent value for money. Also, the TrinitCert TESOL is offered to students on any undergraduate TESOL route and can be obtained in addition to a TESOL degree. Again, by obtaining both a degree and a professional qualification, students are better equipped to enter the job market and have become more employable. This is just one example of the ways in which research into our graduates/ career destinations has guided our programme design. Since 2014, we have been able to make use of social media to keep in contact with our graduates and gather data about their employment. The groups are managed by a number of staff and the Student Experience Support Tutor. Every year, the faculty’s employability event “Soon is Now” gives our students the opportunity to see presentations by recent graduates and gives ideas and inspiration for potential career pathways.
Students studying a language as joint or major subject, spend a Period of Residence Abroad (PRA) as part of their degree. The PRA is offered on the four year version of all language-related programmes. Combined honours students (MMUBS) on minor routes in languages have the opportunity to spend a year abroad, either studying or working. The students’ third year activities are supported by the MMUBS. Previously, this was not possible for students majoring in subjects other than languages. The PRA year has always been a strength of our languages programmes and is very attractive to organisations wishing to recruit talent.
Option Units Option units listed in the curriculum structures (section C28 above) are all approved for delivery, but may not all run in any one academic session. By creating 15-credit units, more optionality has been created (see the separation of “Translation and Interpreting” into bespoke units focussing on a particular skills set each.) The translation and interpreting pathway, for example, which is offered through option units, enables students to specialise and prepare for either postgraduate studies or a professional accreditation. Through student representation and feedback channelled through our Programme Committee structure, students have been heavily involved in the design and constant review of our programme. For example, the oral expression component at all levels has been modified to accommodate student suggestions for more topic-based classes. Most units on the programme are ‘long and thin’ and permit co-study of a Uniwide language unit (where not part of the degree route). The introduction of a placement unit at level 5 is a direct response to students’ desire to experience the professional market in a subject-related area while pursuing an undergraduate degree. In close collaboration with local schools (articulated through a memorandum of understanding), students can work as language assistants in a number of ways: to assist in the classroom, to run after-school clubs, or to organise language-related homework clubs, or bespoke 1-2-1 sessions with individual leaners. Appropriate training is provided through the faculty’s Language Ambassador Scheme, and regular teaching observations and feedback ensure the students’ development of professional skills and their progression. Student Mobility Students on the Student Mobility schemes will study the same curriculum as MMU home students. Where appropriate, 15 credit unit specifications (based on the same curriculum content) have been development to accommodate students’ study at MMU for less than a full academic year.
31 Learning and Teaching
The programme design is based on the university’s Learning, Teaching and Assessment strategy (LTA), and the incorporation of its 6 principles is outlined in the accompanying Course Development Plan. Student Mobility Students on Student Mobility schemes will study the same curriculum as MMU home students. Where appropriate, 15 credit unit specifications have been developed to accommodate students studying at MMU for less than a full academic year. The content of the 15 credit units will be a truncated version of the existing unit.
32 Assessment
Our overall approach to teaching and learning has been shaped by a number of factors, for example: 1. The desire to provide early formative feedback to students has led to the use on a number of units of the Portfolio as a form of assessment. Tutors are able to stagger the input into the
different items in a Portfolio across the teaching year, facilitating workshops and feedback not just at an early stage but regularly throughout the delivery of the unit. 2. The desire to develop content units based on colleagues’ research expertise. A feature of this iteration of the BALP degree has been a prevalence of team-taught units, in which staff are able to deliver sessions based on their own research without the need to create dedicated units that would perhaps be more appropriate at PG Level. 3. The desire to produce graduates that are excellent team-players as well as communicators. The group video element of assessment in Level 4 Minor Language units is a very good example of this, since it demands not only academic knowledge but also people skills and technical know-how. 4. The desire to create graduates with fit for an increasingly internationalised world. Much of this is self-evident in a Language programme, but it has nevertheless also driven the design of other units on the programme. By way of example, the Level 5 unit “Intercultural Communication” has been designed to introduce students to key concepts in communication and meaning negotiation in intercultural interaction, and to equip them with the tools for carrying out empirical research and presenting research findings. The content of the unit covers culture and communication; identity; nationality; stereotypes; interpersonal relations across cultures; power, distance and social structures; conflict and culture; culture and world view; and ethics, processes and issues in intercultural communication research. All students entering the Minor Route receive individual placement advice. All students who do not hold GCSE, ‘A’ Level, Cambridge or ‘standard English level test’ certificates or their equivalents are interviewed by tutors at the point of enrolment to ascertain their language level and the most appropriate class for them to attend. Students may be more or less proficient in one or more skills and guidance is given where compensatory individual study might be indicated. For example, some students may have experience of reading aloud a classical written form of a language, without being able to generate natural utterances, while others may have a ‘passive’ aural understanding of the informal register of a language, possibly using dialect forms, without having seen written texts. Intensive in-country language acquisition experience, even if relatively short, can mean a student has the basis to progress more quickly than one with classroom knowledge only. Therefore, tutors talk both in and about the language with each individual in order to guide the student to the most suitable class. The assessment design is closely mapped to both the programme’s learning outcomes and the university’s graduate learning outcomes (see section on mapping of outcomes and the Course Development Plan). Student Mobility Students following the 15 credit units on Student Mobility schemes will be assessed via types of assessment other than formal written examinations. Where students complete their assessment outside the standard timescale for consideration by Board of Examiners, Chair’s Action will be taken to confirm the outcome of their assessment.

35 Period of Residence Abroad (PRA)
The PRA allows students to spend a period of 18+18 or 36 weeks on placement or at university between Levels 5 and 6. This is not credit-bearing and the results of assessments at the partner institution have no impact on their degree title. It is, however, a requirement for all students, including Combined Honours students, wishing to study a language at Equal / Major/ Single Honours at Level 6. Students studying two languages equally, will split their period of residence abroad into 18 + 18 weeks in two different countries , whereas students on Major or Single Honours routes will spend the duration of 36 weeks in one country. In the past, most students spent this period studying abroad via the Erasmus Scheme. However, recent trends have shown that some students are now looking to spend this period working. The current favourite route for this type of student is to apply for a Foreign Language Assistantship via the British Council. The British Council provides preparation and training, but we are additionally preparing students for this role in a number of ways: 1. Induction Week talks by staff and returning students; 2. Video podcasts by previous Assistants outlining their experiences; 3. The designation of a returning Assistant as an “Ambassador” who is willing to talk and guide future applicants; 4. Practical training on how to give example language classes (held during Employability Week); 5. Blogs produced by previous Assistants chronicling their experiences on a regular basis; 6. Talks by MMU International on the funding opportunities. Additionally, students who are unsuccessful in their applications as undergraduates are not barred from applying as graduates. Indeed, the choice of destination countries for graduates in greater than for undergraduates.
36 Engagement with Employers
This is most visible on the unit level. For example, colleagues in TESOL are regularly in contact with their sector, and develop their curriculum accordingly:
1. The introduction of TrinityCert TESOL is prove of ongoing engagement with professionals, and a shared knowledge of desired graduate skills and accreditations for that sector; 2. Members of the TESOL team have worked with many relevant collaborative partners – Perm, TNU Vietnam, and Shanghai; As a result, the TESOL team has been able to map the CELTA/Trinity courses against the TESOL units offered at all Levels of the programme. Graduate schemes are regularly promoted through the Facebook group of the final year cohort, and recent graduates talk about their employers through employability events bespoke to the programme’s subject areas. Also, regular contact with local schools (as a major employer of our graduates, see section 30 and the Destination of Leavers in Higher Education (DLHE) analysis) is not only provided through 6th form days and teacher training in specific areas in form of CPD courses, but also through work placements offered to our students.
37 Personal Development Planning
The Programme Team has developed a series of employability booklets for each level to complement the series of personal tutorials. All students, including all our Combined Honours students (but currently not Foundation Year students) are allocated to a Personal Tutor for this purpose. In addition, myshowcase is introduced to level 6 students to help with their development of and reflection on professional skills before entering the professional market or postgraduate study.
SECTION E - PROGRAMME MANAGEMENT
38 Programme Specific Admission Requirements
Standard minimum points for University Admission at the time of admission. In line with MMU policy, current Foundation year students are offered the full diet of level 4 units, with their language progression to be expected in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (https://www.coe.int/t/dg4/linguistic/Source/Framework_EN.pdf ). The programme’s entry requirements are aligned to the institutional entry requirements for undergraduate study. For entry to Single Honours or Major Honours language degrees, the team requires evidence of formal qualifications in the language chosen, and at an appropriate grade (e.g. A2 or equivalent, normally grade C or above). Evidence of competence in the language not certified, e.g. acquired through other forms of experiential learning, is normally verified by the academic programme teams prior to an offer being made. All students on work placements in schools are subject to a Disclosure barring Service (DBS) check in order to complete the unit. NB Minimum admission points for entry to the University are reviewed on an annual basis. For entry requirements refer to the current University on-line prospectus
The programme has specific student mobility coordinators, that deal with both inbound and outbound students. The coordinators work in close collaboration with the International Office at the university. In addition, work placements (at level ) are managed by the unit leader and the faculty’s schools outreach teach (IDEA). NB: see guidance on University’s Management of Programme Delivery

Generic academic student support is provided to all students in line with the guidance outlined in the University’s Student Handbook.
Programme Specific Support The programme employs a Student Experience Support Tutor whose role it is to provide another channel of communication for the students. Also, Facebook groups for each cohort allow students to provide peer support.
