As expected, the journey to earn a BAC degree has been filled with life chang-ing development and constant reiterated situations. The previous assessment checkpoint seems to be centuries in the past while only holding a distance of barely three years. Accomplishments and failures of different concentrations have occurred which has only continued to fuel my energy to progress on this path, even though sometimes I feel like I’m trekking through a heavy forests within the middle of a blacken night. To help you become familiar with my events, I want to name an event that occurred which hosts both accomplishment, failure and challenges. I had establish a well rooted position at my current job at the time at a Contracting firm. This job shaped my skills of understanding time, detail, communication and building. I continued to men-tally jump back and forth whether this job was improving my education; the experience was like no other, but the con’s of being an architecture student were only highlighted. During a week in the summer, I encountered an unfamiliar pain in my knee joint which continued to spread among my leg within the following days. I was forced to visit the ER. After several visits, and different diagnoses of my pain, it was revealed that I had a developed case of Lyme Disease. I was restricted from physical activity, and sent to an antibiotic hibernation. The treatment helped health, however I have been told I will continue to struggle with the side effects of lack of energy and joint pain. I have had to reevaluate my decisions towards my future, and redirect my path. These situations help my growth as a student and designer, as my health cannot be something I undermine. As I continue to trek along this journey, I still have interests in studying and designing in the residential field. I have set new long term goal of being able to design affordable housing. I see that there is an opportunity to work with people that need help, constructing empathy that last longer than us. I still hold interests in being apart of building process which has matured into a pursuit of being apart of the technology advancement of architecture material, while having a focus of designing affordable hous-ing. The achievement of being apart of the Huxtable Fellowship this year has began to lite the path to these goals. I am pursuing internships among highly skilled firms (David Baker, LTL) with similar interests in my goals and an empathic vision towards social impact. My responsibilities have developed to become a more valuable and independent designer. I maintain a constant organized work environment with myself and when being apart of teams. I can document and analysis the research that is needed to explore the uncertainty of knowledge. I am given the responsibility been able to coordinate with other student, professionals and clients to create the designed product. These experiences and decisions are slightly haunted from the effects of my health me. I continue to seek treatment and rehabilitation to help improve my status, but I cannot help but be concerned for my energy needed to pursue my goals to be shadowed from the effects of this condition. Finding the correct balance of knowing my limits and pushing the constraints is an ongoing challenge to all aspects of my life. It has slowed down my personality, to give more thought to where I am and where I am going. I will continue to learn to adapt, to push myself, to make sure that I don’t get trapped in a mindset that leaves me off the path.

Huxtable Fellowship

Ada Louise Huxtable Fellowship BSA | NOAHEast BostonDesigner | Student

The Ada Louise Huxtable Fellowship is a competitive program that is hosted for BAC students. I was selected as a recipient of this program along with 5 other advanced students. This Fellowship is an intensive year long program that focuses on creating different opportunities that engage fellows in public, civic, and community-based design work, all based with a collaborative partnership with Boston’s Community Design Resource Center, Boston Society of Architects and Neighborhood of Affordable Housing. There is three segments that focus on different experiences within the concept of the Fellowship. We are currently engaged in part one, where we work with local professionals of Boston. Our focus is the current concentration of Boston’s Sea Level Rise. We have been introduced to its current progress with several research studies and design charrettes that have lead to the Living With Water Competition.

The Fellowship has been asked to help advocate this project. We are laying the foundation of community solutions, gathering the proper connections and establishments that will progress this critical situation

STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY RESILIENCE Community resilience maintains and enhances the cultural identity that de�nes a city through resiliency networks and social support systems. Strategies that strengthen social resilience can both cost less and provide meaningful bene�ts to participants.

INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION

LIVING WITH WATER PRINCIPLES

Boston Living with Water is an international call for innovative design solutions and strategies that address the regular coastal �ooding expected by the year 2100. Over 340 leading planners, designers, and thinkers submitted proposals for three sites in Boston in response to the challenge of sea level rise and climate change.

SITE 2 | The 100 Acres

SITE 1 | The Prince Building This building represents existing and historic, urban, waterfront buildings and properties that are common in Boston and similar vulnerable coastal cities.

This road represents vulnerable coastal infrastructure that is routed through historic, mixed-use, and new development districts and remains critical to growth and functionality of cities.

This neighborhood site represents urban waterfront mixed-use districts with a mix of existing, historic and new developments set in green and blue public spaces.

The Deer Island Sewage Treatment plant is constructed two feet higher than originally designed in anticipation of sea-level rise.

The City of Boston takes �rst climate actions with direction to reduce municipal greenhouse gas emissions.

Tufts and Boston Universities publish the Climate’s Long-Term impacts of Metro Boston (CLIMB) with EPA Funding

Boston adopts the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve energy e�ciency

The Union of Concerned Scientists publishes reports on the e�ects of climate change, projecting an increase of sea-level and average temperatures

Mayor Menino leads the City of Boston to prepare action plans for reduction of dangerous climate change e�ects and incorporates these into the City’s plans for emergency responses and development

The Climate Action Leadership Committee is appointed and prepares comprehensive recommen-dations for the Boston community on climate change mitigation on adaptation

This is a resident of East Boston, who happened to be outside during our tour of the Neighborhood. He introduced himself, and began to explain his experience with being an East Boston Resident for decades. He discussed how he has had clam shells grow in his basement cellar all the while mentioning the life and function that East Boston use to host with its relationship to the Harbor. We have continued communication with this resident, and aim to learn as much as we can from him.

We have directed our momentum from the LWW competition to begin designing solutions for the forefront of the Sea-Level Rise, East Boston. We have dove into the neighborhoods by documenting and experiencing the life of these areas.

These spreads of images show features that need to addressed, as these homes are within the floodplain of 2030. Many issues have been found in entrances, foundation and circulation.

During the midst of the Lyme Disease hibernation, I was beginning to get anxious from boredom. I began to look for different projects that would be interesting to become a part of. After browsing different online pages, I came across a post to Reddit from a user in Denver, CO. He was asking for people’s opinions on creating an urban commune on a plot of land he had just purchased.

After getting in contact with the Redditor, we started to lay down some foundations to the project. He wanted to follow a concept based on principles of efficiency,permaculture, and a low budgeted community within the city. We began to explore the different possibilities of making a low budget house that would fit the environment of this project.

We came across this online diagram that shows the building process of Yurt structure. This became the anchor of our project, and we pushed off from this.

The first stage of this project was to design and create small living spaces for a community, focusing on the foundation piece first. After some research with local codes and zone, we came across the issue of the permits and licenses we would need to create this project. However, we found a loophole. We could keep this community up for 180 days, and then they would have to taken down, which gave us idea of modular units we could take down and rebuild to fit this law.

To keep a flexible stance towards iterating the project, we planned to create temporary structure into pieces. The diagrams represent the different sizes of Yurts, and how they could be broken into different forms.

Key Spline Note:

The top layer of plywood and insulation would cut and used to make the key. The foam can expand And create a tight connection with in the key joint, and the plywood will help secure the key.

Platform Notes:I had three di�erent thoughts on how the platform could attach to the framing.

Framing:

You could just get large deck screws, and attach it through the plywood. Or crawl underneath and hanger it in.

Keys & Framing:

With the Keys in use too, we could attach more fasteners to secure it better.

Keys:

Add in the Spline Joint and create a key that joints the pieces together. You could throw a few screws into the outside to secure it.

The Keys would be split evenly through-out the seem. It was common to have a rectangular 4”x 8” Key

I spent most of years in Segment II working within construction field on many different projects. I wanted to highlight this project because of intensive and aggravating experience it brought.

The company had been contracted to gut and rebuild a dinner within an old H.H. Richardson train station in Framingham, MA. The building was in a bit of a rough shape, as previous owners had had the same aspirations,

Framingham is a bit of a tough place to be working. We were constantly interlaced with aggressive drug users, homeless gangs and roaring commuter rail that shakes the building when approaching. Our team was constantly communicating in order to keep a safe and secure job site. As petty as it sounds, it brought a whole new view of professionalism among the contracting field. I help the responsibility of material orders, equipment maintenance, sub contractors, delivery orders that all needed to secure on site.

A big event during this process was south facade falling apart. This exterior brick wall had began to fall over due to the trains vibration from passing by. The engineers informed us we needed to act fast to secure this wall. In these images was the first step of solving this issue. Creating temporary columns to help support the roof load. What’s not shown was the bracketing process, which consisted on anchoring the wall from new metal beams that were installed, and tying the capstones back to

This project is an example of experience that continuously changed each week. The description of this project called for “experienced students” to analysis and design a solution for a historic Nail Factory in Wareham, MA. We were informed that we had no funding and holds several different constraints that block the process of this project.

This project sat between the towns opinion of keeping the historic treasure as it was, and others saying that wanted it burned down. In order for this project to gain any progress towards becoming beneficial towards the town, we had to produce a space that could create funding and offer town activities.

After working with some of the other students, it had been clear that most of the students were young in the BAC and the process we were in. At the beginning of segment II, I began an apprenticeship at a fine woodworking company. During my time there, I had the chance to design and build two built in cabinets for a piano room. The client had asked us to recreate his current crown molding, have sliding recessed doors, and be able to hold his speakers to his piano. This job required a bit of acoustic research among many other subjects, however most of the beneficial moments came from the mistakes I made during the building process.

With that being said, this experience marks a checkpoint of when my responsibilities and experience started to increase. I found the process of designing and building furniture to be something I really enjoyed,however was not what I wanted to pursue as a career.

The process began with modeling different parts of the project, beginning with the carcass. I was assigned with the tasks to create and present the process of creating this project. This consisted of the measurements of each piece, the order of materials, the cut-list, patterns of cuts and measurement locations of joints.

We encountered a bit of an issue with the installation when we came to find out the wall was heavily off plum. A simple solution was created to caulk and seal a series of shims that would hide the gap.

2.05 STACKING GREEN

A tubular structure that hosts a single family residences, Stacking Green is

seen as a sustainable benchmark with its two Green Facades and Rooftop

garden. Located in the polluted and chaotic city of Saigon, this project stands

tall and sets an example of using natural elements to protect its inhabitants

from direct sunlight, street noise and pollution. Natural ventilation pours

through the facades with its passive design methods and two skylights,

which creates a savings in energy and a low electricity bill of 25 USD per

month. The automatic irrigation systems attends to the plants, using only

the rainwater collected with rooftop tank. Designed from Vo Trong Nghia and

Associates, they pushed to improve Saigon’s town-scape characteristics

of developing greenery. “We intended for this house to inspire people to

re-define and re-increase the greenery”

Constant airflow is treated by the facade, creating cleaner air for those around while also supplying a solid break of greenery into the cityscape

Noise cancellation and temperature cooling controls the structure and its nearby surroundings

The main technology of this project location. These pieces create the identity of the building and works as a suggestion for the future of Saigon

This layer is considered an exterior element that serves as the circulation to each floor. To create a protected interior space, a moveable glass partition is positioned on each floor. These layers give protection to the residents, while allowing for visual and physical access to the sustainable elements.

PLANTER DETAILThe planters act as a stronghold facade. The plants are irrigated with recycled rainwater that is stored in a rooftop tank. Noise from the city is absrobed. the plants also act as protection against direct sunlight. The strong sunlight passes through the leaves and changes to ambient light.
