Accreditation

The Institute of Commerce, Nirma University is a constituent Institution of Nirma University. Nirma University and its constituent Institutions are accredited with 'A' grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous accreditation institution of the University Grants Commission, Government of India.

The letter grade 'A' is the highest grade awarded to an institution of higher education by NAAC. This accreditation status indicates that Nirma University and all its constituent Institutions meet the standards of quality as set by NAAC, in terms of their performance related to educational processes and outcomes covering the curriculum, teaching-learning, evaluation, faculty, research, infrastructure, learning resources, organisation, governance, financial well-being and student services.

About the Programme:

The Bachelor in Commerce (Honours) intends to prepare students for their career in Accounting or BFSI sector. It aims to develop requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes in them to meet the challenges of the accounting, auditing, taxation and BFSI sector domains. The programme focuses equally on theoretical and practical aspects of the above mentioned domains, promoting an attitude of life-long learning among the students and preparing them as a professional employee or a self-employed individual. It comprises of six semesters (two semesters in each year) over a period of 3 years. On successful completion of the six semesters, a degree of Bachelors in Commerce (Honours) [B.Com. (Hons.)] is awarded to the students.

Additional Learning Opportunities:

We believe that it is our responsibility to develop our students as professionals right on the campus while they are still students. We consider students as active partners in managing the Institute and its activities such as conferences, guest lectures, seminars, placement, etc., and ensures that they play an active role in the life of the Institute rather than being passive recipients. They are also given opportunities to enroll themselves into various courses like CGMA which is a Strategic Management Accounting program, NISM Certification Course and Tally with GST. Thus the time that students spend at the campus is designed to be the most fulfilling period of their lives.

Summer Internship

The students are required to undergo Summer Internship for a period of four weeks at the end of both 2nd and 4th semesters. The internship at the end of 2nd semester, with an NGO is aimed to enhance the skills and develop the character of students whereas the one at the end of 4th semester is arranged at corporates to enable the students to gain practical / real- life experience of industry/corporate world.

Publication of KALEIDOSCOPE is among many firsts that have taken place at ICNU during past academic year. Publication of ICNU newsletter aims to pave the way for our students to showcase the vivid colors of their intellect and personalities. The students seeking admission in the first year of Degree Programme leading to Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) [B.Com (Honours)] shall have passed the HSC examination (10+2) or any other recognized examination considered equivalent by Nirma University with English as a subject along with any one of the following subjects: Accountancy/Business Administration/ Economics/ Statistics/ Mathematics. They must have obtained a minimum of 60% marks in qualifying examinations. Infrastructure

The Campus

The University is situated about 15 kms from Ahmedabad city, on the Sarkhej – Gandhinagar Highway. A 110-acre lush green campus in picturesque surroundings provides a refreshing environment, stimulating intellectual alertness and creativity. The campus has an ambience that motivates the students to grow. The University building has several amphitheaters, flat classrooms, an auditorium with a capacity of 450 seats, computer centre, a communication lab, a fully automated library, an art gallery, faculty and administrative blocks, conference rooms, and other facilities. Modernity, aestheticism, and grandeur characterize the buildings. The campus also has modern sports facilities. The overall atmosphere is distinguished by serenity, which is conducive for intellectual pursuits.

Classrooms

The classrooms are equipped with multimedia and audio-visual equipment to facilitate effective learning. Classrooms are designed to promote maximum interaction between the faculty and students. Each classroom has internet connectivity through LAN and Wi-Fi.

Computing Facilities

Computing facilities for the students include a well-equipped lab. A state-of-the-art network connects every corner of the Institute. High-speed servers running on a variety of platforms to suit all kinds of requirements support the entire network. A 512 mbps dedicated optic fiber leased line and wi-fi hotspots enable round the clock internet connectivity. The Institute has also acquired the latest software, namely SPSS and Oracle among others. Internet and Intranet mail servers are available to students and faculty round the clock.

Library Resource Centre (LRC)

The library provides access to a wide range of business related sources that include leading national and international business periodicals in addition to an impressive collection of business databases, digitized corporate annual reports, and CDs/DVDs. The library has more than 33,500 volumes of books.

The library subscribes to 13 databases. Around 15000 e-journals are subscribed through databases such as EBSCO's Business Source Complete, and Academic Search Complete, Elsevier's Science Direct: Business, Management & Accounting package, Emerald Management, JSTOR archival e-journal package and Oxford e-bundle. The library subscribes to ISI Emerging Markets database which provides trade related information from all over the world. The financial and economic databases subscribed by the library are Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy's- Industry Outlook, Ace Equity and Ace Mutual Fund from Accord Fintech, India Stat, EPWRF India Series, Frost and Sullivan, and SCOPUS. The library also subscribes to Indiastat.com and has Springer e-books collection. All databases are accessible on Campus IP's and remote access is given on request as well.

The library is fully automated through Koha: an open source software, accessible on the campus LAN. This user-friendly package facilitates issue and return of books with Web-catalogue. The library has adopted the latest information technologies like CD, DVD, multimedia kits, barcode scanners, and text and graphic scanners for effective use of library services.

Life on Campus Life on campus for the students of Institute of Commerce is thrilling and exciting. The years that students spend on the campus of Nirma University turn out to be the most fulfilling years of their lives. Life at the Institute is vibrant and exhilarating, studded with events and celebrations that enrich the students intellectually, transforming them into more complete individuals. Students of the Institute plan, organise and conduct all types of activities – academic, social, cultural and sports – thus developing their leadership and teamwork skills.

Expert Lecture On Ethics & Corporate Governance

Prof. Anil Kumar of Shri Ram College of Commerce, University of Delhi addressed ICNU students on the theme "Ethics & Corporate Governance". Prof. Kumar discussed the need of ethics in various professional fields such as financial accounting, reporting, and marketing quoting "SATYAM" case of financial and accounting irregularities.

Employability Skills Workshop

The ICNU in association with All India Management Association (AIMA) conducted a four day employability workshop on 26 - 29th September, 2018 for the graduating batch of B. Com. (Hons.). The highlights of the workshop were: mock interviews, behavioral skills, etiquettes in formal as well as informal environment, body language, Rule of 12 etc.

ELYSIAN - Elegant Fest of ICNU!

ELYSIAN 2019 – the first edition of cultural and literary festival of Institute of Commerce was launched with the theme – “HIGH ON COLORS”. The two day cultural and literary event had 9 competitions in its store. A total of 557 students participated in various events of which 400 plus students belonged to other colleges and universities not only from Ahmedabad, but also from Gandhinagar, Vadodara and Indore. Elysian 2019 concluded in style with India’s RAW STAR – Darshan Raval performing live at Dome Ground witnessed by 4500 plus gathering of students making the venue of his performance too “HIGH ON COLORS”.

“RUN FOR CAUSE” - Run to Educate

The first of its kind – Run for Cause, a CSR Activity at the Nirma University campus was organized by Institute of Commerce with the support of its NGO Partner – Navjeevan Seva Sansthan. The fund raised by the registrations shall be utilized to provide scholarships to the students of underprivileged and poor section of the society.

Chase Happiness, not Success or Money

Addressing the students of Institute of Commerce, Prof (Dr.) Ross Vandiar, visiting faculty at University of Amsterdam and CEO of “Royal Dutch Advisory”, Netherlands, shared his life experiences. He reminded students that the key to success starts with “them” and their pleasing personality in today’s competitive and digital world. “Be aware of Intolerance – This is a silent killer of knowledge and it will reveal to the world your exact stock of ignorance” was his personal advice to ICNU students.

Kurukshetra:2019 - ICNU Sport Festival

The sports club of Institute of Commerce, Nirma University organized Two days Inter- University sports fest: Kurukshetra on 7th and 8th February 2019 as part of Elysian 2019. Twenty-four teams of boys & girls of various reputed universities across Ahmedabad participated in the event. In each level, all the winners were felicitated with cash prizes and certificates. The title winner of boys’ team was GLS-IC and in girls’ team was GLS-BBA.

ICNU Signs an MOU with GIFT SEZ

Institute of Commerce, Nirma University signed an MOU with GIFT SEZ Limited, established as India’s first International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) under Section 18 of the Special Economic Zone Act, 2005 (“SEZ Act 2005”).

The MOU sets out the framework agreed between GIFT SEZ and ICNU to operationalise cooperation in the areas such as: introducing a course on International financial services centre (IFSCs); conducting programs in financial markets operations along with GIFT and other institutions based out of GIFT IFSC; conducting research in the field of International Banking, International insurance, International capital markets and organising seminars, guest lectures, workshops and conferences for creating awareness on International Financial Services Centre.

RANGOTSAV - Rangoli Competition

In order to promote the artistic skills of students, RANGOTSAV - Rangoli Competition was organized by ICNU on the theme "INDIAN CULTURE". The teams showcased their artistic skills beautifully.

Formal Freshers

A Formal Freshers' was organized on 27th July 2018 by the students of Second Year for the newly admitted B. Com. (Hons) batch of 2018-21 at Pharmacy Auditorium. The main purpose was to welcome the new students and make them feel an integral part of ICNU as well as Nirma University family. The event also reiterated on ICNU being a ragging free campus so that students can comfortably settle in the academic environment. The winners of all the games were felicitated in the prize distribution ceremony.

National Service Scheme (NSS) Activities

The NSS Unit of ICNU organized various activities including 7 days Special Camp at Kavitha Village from March 8 to 14,2019. The camp started with the participation of the volunteers in blood donation camp. Other prominent activities of the camp included Transformation of an unproductive land of ‘Shri Vinoba Ashram, Kavitha’ into a small beautiful garden, promotion of a number of government schemes like ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padao’, ‘Clean India Mission’ and ‘Vote India’ through rallies and door to door visits by our volunteers. On the last day of camp a ‘Cultural Evening’,‘Craft Exhibition’ and 'Prize Distribution ceremony' were organized. Talent Hunt Day

The Talent Hunt Day comprising of various literary and cultural activities was organized to identify talents of our students. The literary events, elocution on the topic "Gender Sensitization", Debate on "Whether movies change the opinion of viewers or not", and poetry recitation were highly appreciated. The cultural events Singing and Dancing were enjoyed by audience. All the participants impressed the jury with their wonderful performances.

Industrial Visits

A VISIT TO NEXTILE: A TILE FACTORY AND VARMORA SHOWROOM

It was a perfect start for the first year B.Com. (Hons.) students by visiting an industry and learning about it. While visiting the Varmora manufacturing facilities and its showroom, students had an opportunity to see different type of tiles and vast variety of sanitary ware. They learned about cost management of variety of products. The industrial visit was an educational and interactive experience for the students.

A VISIT TO GIFT SEZ CITY

It was an exciting moment for final year students to visit GIFT SEZ City and various companies operating from there. The visit provided the students with practical knowledge about the stock exchange and trading in international market. The students also visited the Solid waste management tunnel which has Automated Waste Collection System (AWS) and the waste treatment through Plasma Technology.

ICNU Shines

In a very short span of time, ICNU has outperformed its peers by claiming various prizes and medals in team as well individual categories of various games, sports and cultural activities organized by Nirma University as well as other Universities, Ahmedabad Art festival, ISTD state level case analysis competition, SBI National level quiz. Three of our students were selected by SP Jain Institute of Management for an all-inclusive trip to visit their Dubai campus. Our third year student, Mr. Vinit Udernani, was casted in MTV show "Elevator Pitch" which was aired in November, 2018. He also did a pre production shoot with Viacom.
