Creating a shared vision of asustainable and desirable futureis the most critical task ofhumanity today. This visionmust be of a world that we allwant, a world that providespermanent well being within theEarth's biological limitations andand ecological constraints in afair and equitable way to all ofhumanity, to other species, andto future generations of both.

Sustainability &SustainableDevelopment

Every one uses these terms butwhat do they really mean?

Both are misused terms. Theirmeaning depends upon the user'sworld view

Sustainability Solutions

Sustainability may be themost important word in ourlanguage, and also the mostmisused

Sustainable Development

is an oxymoron

Not if “growth in quality” egimproved education andhealth and well-being)

The study of sustainable developmentfocuses on fostering the transition to asustainable future for PNG

… involving

… process which aims to create anecologically and economicallysustainable and socially equitable society

and ……..

Improving the quality of life / humanwell-being within the carrying capacityof supporting ecosystems & maintainingecosystem services

We must now move into the“Sustainability Revolution”

The future of all Nature and ourEarth depend upon it.

Hence it is crucial that weunderstand clearly what“sustainability” and “sustainabledevelopment” mean and whatthey require.

We must work toward strong sustainability solutions

The Earth has biological limits / ecological constraints

At present humans’ ecological footprint exceeds the Earth's carryingcapacity by 1.5-1.7 times; by 2050 by 2 times – we NOW consume 1.7Earths. This is clearly UNSUSTAINABLE due to economic growthand too many people and too much consumption.

The idea of continuous (so called sustainable) economic growth is basedon a false assumption , in fact on 'ecological absurdities'. This is whatenvironmental scientists and ecologists have been saying for years andschool children learn in biology classes at school!!!!

“In overdeveloped countries peoples must live moresimply so others in developing countries can simplylive”; so over-developed countries must of necessityDE-DEVELOP

Page 25: Bachelor of Sustainable Developmentdevpolicy.org/Events/2015/2015-PNG-Update/... · justice and a culture of peace. Towards this end, it is imperative that we, the peoples of Earth,

Two important lessons from Ecological Footprint

1. Over-developed countriesmust DE-DEVELOP astheir ecological footprint isfar too large eg Australia

Australia must reduce its EFgreatly to below itsbiocapacity and to besustainable / not greedy

2. PNGians and other developingcountries ought not to aspireto this prosperity and GREED

3 PNGians need aspire toVision 2050 aims but staywithin lower ecologicalfootprint than biocapacity. andremain sustainable

strong sustainability==

No substitution for criticalNatural Capital

The new economy will be based on a genuine vision of life's ultimate meaning and purpose – an economythat does not cut us off from Nature and community but fosters true human potential, fulfillment andhappiness.

What is sustainable and what is unsustainable

Sustainability is

List 26 points on whereterm sustainability mightapply

Sustainability ensues the sustenance ofhealthy and diverse ecosystems forexisting and future generations ofhumans and other species. For thiswe need to recognise biologicallimitations and ecologicalconstraints and that physical growthcan not be endless.

Unsustainability

Lists 14 points on whereterm unsustainabilitymight apply

We are living unsustainably

The endless growth economy is a keydriver of unsustainability

Page 29: Bachelor of Sustainable Developmentdevpolicy.org/Events/2015/2015-PNG-Update/... · justice and a culture of peace. Towards this end, it is imperative that we, the peoples of Earth,

More precise Definition of Sustainability

Sustainability refers to the ability ofecosystems, or a society or any suchongoing system to continue functioningand persist into the indefinite future.

ELABORATION

Sustainability

Is a way of life and approach to environmental, social andeconomic activities for all societies, now rich and poor, which iscompatible with ensuring maintaining an environment suitable forall living things now and for ever;

is a commitment to ecocentric values or an Earth-centred worldview and to the continual coexistence of humans with other livingthings on Earth; recognising that both human cultures evolve as doall living things adapting as their environments change;

is where the ecological processes on which all life depends aremaintained, and where humans live within the carrying capacity ofsupporting ecosystems; using more renewable resources andworking to restore and enhance degraded ecosystems;

Is about matching wants and needs of human societies to the bio-capacity of Earth's ecosystems such that humans minimise ourecological footprint by changing our ways so we do not in futureexceed the Earth's bio-capacity;

is about ensuring the social and economic well being for all peoplesand ecological justice for Nature as well as social justice forpeople;

and constraints on human impact preclude endless growth ofhuman populations and material consumption and destructivetechnologies.

Situation in PNG Today

An enlightened view from Hon Charles Abel

Recognises global environmental issues andproblems of unsustainability in PNG

We need to find a new PNG way

We need a new paradigm – to change frombrown to green development.

The PNG Way Forward to ResponsibleSustainable Development

PNG has two key documents: Vision 2050 andNational Strategy of Responsible SustainableDevelopment.

It has a PNG Long Term Plan 2010-2030..Recent release ? It now needsan Action Plan for Sustainability to ensure success

Vision 2050 and

National Strategy of Responsible SustainableDevelopment. With its 21 principles.

The problems and government actions inconsistentwith a sustainable development strategy arerecognised clearly by Minister Abel and his staff.They suggest 'new PNG way' or 'development orsustainability revolution' and commitment to thenew paradigm of green development.

Education for sustainabledevelopment is an essentialingredient. It helps usunderstand and address theneeds for change,encourages changes in ourattitudes and behaviour andgives us the knowledge andskills to effect that change
