BUILT-IN SUCCESS

Graduates of the Frankfurt School are in great demand– worldwide. Many of them rise quickly to achieve topmanagement positions. Although this is also partly due

to the reputation they have as graduates of a leadingbusiness school, what is really decisive for their continu-ing success is their own performance and the skills theygain during their chosen study programme.

A high level of practical orientation is one of the hall-marks of the programme. Our teachers and trainers havea wealth of practical experience, and the Frankfurt Schoolmaintains close contact with cooperation partners at thefinancial hub Frankfurt. We use case studies and exercisesto facilitate the transfer of theoretical knowledge to theworld of practical work, and students complete intern-ships to gain even more in-depth knowledge.

Shaping the future and taking responsibility

Students at the Frankfurt School learn to be active in

shaping change. We encourage and support their indi-vidual strengths and decision-making ability. As learn-ing groups are small, innovative and interactive teachingmethods are possible, allowing visions to be developedsystematically. QUESTIONS TO THE PROGRAMME DIRECTOR

A few questions to theProgramme Director

as well. In this respect the Frankfurt School doesn’tdiffer much from other international business schools. There is, however, something special about the German

approach to business. The country has for many decadesmaintained a highly competitive economy withoutneglecting social equality. The German “social marketeconomy” is characterised by amicable relationshipsbetween management, labour and other stakeholderswithout compromising flexibility and excellence. This hasenabled the German economy to corroborate its positionas the world’s fourth biggest economy and third biggestexporter. Students at the Frankfurt School will becomedeeply familiar with the German approach to manage-ment – concepts that are highly relevant to other con-

texts, in particular to dynamic emerging markets thatstrive to maintain not just high growth rates per se butto transform them into inclusive, quality growth.

Combining academic learning and practical ex-

perience is an important aspect at the Frankfurt

School. How do you ensure that students aquire

both theoretical and practical knowledge?

The Frankfurt School is known for placing great empha-

sis on the integration of knowledge and practical expe-rience. All our students have to gain work experienceduring their time here, primarily through internships inGermany and abroad. We also frequently bring in seniorexecutives from banks and multinational companies asguest speakers or adjunct faculty. Finally, we regularlyinvite outstanding personalities for talks at our campusbecause we want our students to be exposed to thesepeople and their ideas first-hand.

If you had to sum up the Bachelor experience at

the Frankfurt School, how would you describe it?

We provide a rigorous and very solid academic pro-gramme that teaches our students everything they need

to know to start their career in business. We believe inlaying a solid foundation of relevant knowledge thatour graduates can draw upon later in their work. At thesame time we expose students to the latest concepts inmanagement thinking. While we demand a lot from ourstudents we support them in every aspect to help themsucceed. This makes for a very friendly atmosphere oncampus that values team work and collaboration. Ourgraduates leave not only with a top-class degree butalso with friends for life.

Is studying at the Frankfurt School different from

doing a Bachelor at another top international

business school in, say, the US or the UK?

Many of the principles and concepts of managementand business administration that students will encoun-ter during their Bachelor studies are taught elsewhere

How is the mix between international and Ger-

man students?

We attract both international students and top Germanstudents with a global mindset. The percentage of for-eign students has been rising over the past years, butGermans still constitute a majority on campus. Thatbeing said, the teaching language for the Bachelorprogrammes Business Administration and InternationalBusiness Administration is English and the groups arealways mixed. Foreign students are integrated quickly bytheir German counterparts, who are eager to make themfeel at home. Special initiatives such as “FS Buddy” alsohelp to settle in.

You recently moved to Frankfurt after working

in Stockholm and Geneva. How’s life in Frankfurt?

Frankfurt is easily Germany’s most international city.Home to many banks and financial institutions and toEurope’s third biggest airport, foreigners have been apart of the city for a long time. Even if you don’t speakGerman you won’t feel out of place. At the same time,Frankfurt is centrally located and an ideal starting point

to explore Germany and the neighbouring countries. It is acosmopolitan place, but not too big to be inconvenient.

What are you planning for the Bachelor pro-

 grammes?

We are constantly enhancing our programmes. TheFrankfurt School is as dynamic as the world around it.Currently, our aim is to expand the number of coop-

European Central Bank – a close neighbour ofthe Frankfurt School campus, as a matter of fact.

Building on the terrible experiences of politi-cal failure which led to the Second World War,Germany developed the Social Market Economyas the guiding principle of mediating betweenbusiness, politics and society, contributing onefoundation stone for prosperity and peace in thegrowing and deepening European community ofnations. The Social Market Economy takes for

granted the responsible nature of business andits deep-rooted setting in the larger context ofconcerns for social justice, constructive and in-clusive political debate and sustainable ecologi-cal development.

Germany is a federal system with a large variety ofregions, which have distinct traditions in businessand social contexts, ranging from coastal stateswith their long historical tradition of global trade

to the southern states with their unique clustersof engineering excellence. You only need to takea few steps to pay a visit to Germany‘s Europeanneighbours in the east, west, south and north, offering a wealth of different historical legacies, lifestyles and cultures. The diversity of Europe andsix decades of internal peace are the root causesof European competitiveness and creativity. The European experience will make a profoundimpression on you and will exert a lasting positiveinfluence on your own professional life.

Germany is widely acknowledged as the birthplaceof the modern university education system. In theearly 19th century, Wilhelm von Humboldt pro-posed that research and teaching should effective-ly represent two sides of the same coin – an edu-cational principle that has successfully establisheditself worldwide as the basis for scientific collabo-ration, and is enshrined in the methodology of

Frankfurt School of Finance & Management. Other German innovationsinclude mechanical engineering, the chemicalindustry, medical technology and, most recently, environmental technology – all industries thathave had a worldwide impact, along with manyothers. Today, Frankfurt is the major financialmarketplace of continental Europe, home to the
