THE SCIENTIFIC MONTHLY-ADVERTISEMENTS v

IMPRtOVED CLASS L SENSITIZING

for Eastman Speetroseopic Plates

Wedge spectrogram of the Improved Class L Sensitizing

EASTMIAN SPECTROSCOPIC PLATES prepared with Class L Sensitizing respond through the spectrum from the

near ul-Lraviolet to the infrared at ?9000 A. They are intencled for observations of broad spectral regions in a single exposure, and are specially useful for preliminary surveys in spectrographic analysis.

These plates have recently been materially improved -particularly by increasing the infrared sensitivity so that t;he response through the entire spectral range is much mnore uniform. The new Class L Sensitizing is applied to Types I, II, III, IV, 144, and VA emulsions.

(1) You cannot afford to miss even one important development in your own field, or an allied field of science.

(2) But you are much too busy on your own problems to read all the new scientific books.

(3) Therefore you would enjoy having sound, impartial advice as to which really ARE the most significant scientific books of each month--especially if that advice cost you nothing.

F the three foregoing statements are true in your case-as with most alert scientists-

then only one point remains: Do you buy six books a year? Six books of any kind-scien- tific or otherwise?

If you do, and if you will buy them from the Scientific Book Club at regular prices, then you may have sound, impartial advice at no cost as to the leading scientific books published each month. That advice will, come to you from these distinguished scientists who make up the Editorial Committee of the Scientific Book Club:

Kirtley F. Mather, Ph.D., Sc.D.

Arthur H. Compton, Ph.D., LL.D., Sc.D.

Harlan T. Stetson, Ph.D.

Edward L. Thorndike, Ph.D., Sc.D., LL.D.

These famous leaders in science do the pre- liminary work of discovering and studying the books worthy of club members' serious atten- tion. Their authoritative, concise reports are mailed free to members each month in the Sci- entific Book Club Review. Of course the committee only suggests what books are out- standing-they do not dictate your choice in any way.

Beyond your agreement to take six books a year in any field, there are no obligations of any kind implicit in your membership in the Scientific Book Club. No book will ever be sent you until you have had plenty of time to decide from the Editorial Committee's report whether you want that book.

Would you not appreciate such a service? You may start enjoying it at once by filling in and returning the coupon. There are no fees or dues; you need send no money.

A scientifically sound knowledge of the mnain facts of all the biological sciences

An appreciation of the far-reaching significance of these facts to man and the development of his civili- zation . . . . . .

An insight into the methods by which life in its many forms is studied, and into the vast network of rela- tionships between living things

All this is now offered in the new text for survey or orientation courses in the biological sciences:

MAN and THE LIVING WORLD By E. E. Stanford, College of the Pacific and Stockton Junior College

This book gives the student a sound body of scientifically reliable in- formation on all the chief discoveries about the living world, emphasiz- ing the great importance of these discoveries to mankind. It includes a complete survey of both the plant and animal kingdoms; an up-to- date account of important findings in bacteriology and microbiology; a full section on food and nutrition, poisons, disease and its prevention; much interesting material on plant and animal breeding, soil conserva- tion, and other aspects of the agricultural sciences; a clear discussion of the human body, its structure and functions; and a well presented digest of the facts of evolution and heredity, including some interesting ma- terial on present racial groupings. The whole book is lavishly illus- trated. To be published in October. $3.50 (probable)
