Matthew 18:21-35 Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how of-ten will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times…
As we begin this parable, we see once again where Christ starts of with “The kingdom of heaven is like…or the kingdom of heaven can be compared to…” Jesus gives us inside access as to how the Lord operates in his kingdom (a place full of God’s people where God rules). The overwhelming punchline to this parable is this: God is, and always has been, serious about how his people interact with others. We see threads of this very truth all throughout the Old Testament. In Genesis 12, when God makes his cov-enant with Abraham to lead him to a promised land and make his name/family great, he also includes this state-ment: “I will bless you so that you will be a blessing.” In Genesis 12, God took seriously how his people interacted with others. Moving forward to Exodus and the 10 Com-mandments, if you look at those on a broad scale you can see how those break down into dealing with man’s rela-tionship with God, his family, and others. Even under the Mosaic Law, God cared about how his people interacted with others. In this context, in the kingdom of God, God expects his people to be forgiving people. The expectation of God’s people is that they would respond to his for-giveness with forgiveness of their own. In the kingdom of God, forgiveness is an expectation, not a suggestion. Forgiveness is not always the easy thing to do, or the thing that even feels right. But forgiveness is the life that the Lord calls us to. Forgiving others requires us to give up control of the situation. We, naturally, want to be in control as much as possible. We feel more comfortable that way, we know how things work and how things should go that way. Living a lifestyle of forgiveness means that I trust that God’s way is better when my way may FEEL better. Any time that I choose to not forgive (or really not live in the way that the Lord calls us to) what I’m saying is that how I want to live is better for me than how the Lord expects me to live. I’m saying, with my actions, that my life and my own decisions are too important to trust the Lord with them.
Matt
