I’m super proud of the effort and determination that our staff and students put into making John Adams the place to be. John Adams Middle School Honor Code

The John Adams Middle School Honor Code is based on the belief that true learning depends upon honesty. JAMS functions on the basis of mutual trust and respect between all students and faculty. As a result, students, faculty, staff, and administrators are expected to demonstrate integrity and individual responsibility, both personally and academically, in order to maintain a fair and honest environment. Students who commit themselves to upholding John Adams’ honor code will be instilled with a sense of honor and integrity that will last beyond their school years.

Honor Code Pledge: On my honor, as a student of John Adams and a member of this community, I will not lie, cheat, steal, or bully, nor will I tolerate those who do.

Honor Code violations include cheating, plagiarism, lying, theft, and the tolerance of any of the aforementioned violations.

Office Volunteers We need your help! Consider volunteering for a few hours each month by answering the school phone. If you are interested in providing help to the office staff, please contact Mrs. Norman at 304-348-6652. Office Volunteers also are in need of an individual who will assume responsibility as Lead Volunteer.

Open House Parents are invited to the annual Open House on Thursday, August 22 from 6-8 P. M. Come meet your child’s teachers and staff while learning more about John Adams! To allow time to park and visit informational booths and presentations, please plan to arrive no later than 5:30. The booths, which will be located in the lobby, will provide information on various events happening around the school. We will also have JAMS merchandise

for sale at that time. Bring with you a copy of your child’s schedule and money in case you wish to purchase merchandise or yearbooks. Parents will meet with the JA faculty at 6:00 in the gym for a brief session that will be followed by classroom visits. Parents will follow their child’s schedule to allow an opportunity to meet all of his/her teachers, hear classroom expectations, and ask questions concerning the upcoming school year.

Attendance Policy West Virginia Code 18-8-1 and West Virginia Board of Education Policy 4110 permit students to be absent from school for:

Clubs & Organizations Student Council

Congratulations to the following students who have been elected to represent the John Adams student body as Student Council officers.

President: Ireland Wiley Vice President: Ally Heath Secretary: Lexi Graham Treasurer: Delaney Jackson

After the start of the school year, elections for new class representatives for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades will be held. More information will be forthcoming.

Beta Club

The John Adams chapter of the National Junior Beta Club would like to announce the officers for the 2019-2020 school year.

President: Samir Jones Vice President: Riley Friend Secretary: Maryn Reed Treasurer: Zoe Charles

An informational meeting will be held during Developmental Guidance on August 29 for those students who have maintained a 3.76 GPA for both semesters during the previous school year. Students may begin accruing volunteer hours, 15 of which must be school-related while the additional 15 may be outside of school.

Lunch Parents are gently reminded that students/parents are not to order food from delivery sites such as Grubhub or DoorDash. Doing so is a violation of safe schools as we cannot have strangers bringing food to our students. Parents are also discouraged from bringing fast food into the school for their child, as we have had emergencies with food allergies in the past. Students may bring a lunch from home or receive one free of

charge from the cafeteria. We greatly appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Class News Sixth Grade

We are so excited for the new school year. We have included a few tips that might interest you:

• Remember that this is a new school year, a new school, and a new you. Leave all your baggage behind and start anew.

• Communication is key for students and parents-ask questions, email, discuss.

• Get organized and stay organized.

• Practice working with a combination lock. You will have a locker with a lock attached. You will also have a locker partner from your home base.

• Practice multiplication and division facts. Be sure you know all the facts through twelves by the time school starts.

• Read, read, and read!!!

• A supply list will be provided by each teacher via the syllabus for each class on the first day of school. Definite materials you will need include: paper, pencils, and checking pens. If possible, we would appreciate Clorox wipes and tissues for your home base teachers. Sixth grade is a “transition to middle school” year and a fresh start for everyone, so come ready to learn and ready for a fantastic year.

Dismissal Policy New pick-up procedure designed to aid bus traffic flow

With only one road in and out of John Adams, it takes cooperation to make morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up of students run smoothly. Stopped traffic can pose various safety concerns and prevent buses from arriving and departing in a timely manner. We can make the process efficient and safe by following these guidelines.

Important New Policy:

County bus officials now require that JA and GW buses load and depart each school BEFORE car riders are dismissed and leave the parking area. This means cars will not be able to load and depart from the JA parking lot until approximately 3:11 P. M.

For Morning Drop-Off:

Drop off students in the parking lot by the rain garden or the bus circle. If you are using the bus circle, please use a single circle and let students off at the curb of the sidewalk. Avoid the temptation of making two driving circles in the bus circle. This would cause students to cross in front of other cars.

For Afternoon Pick-Up:

Cars are not permitted in the circle area between 2:20 and 3:45 P.M. Cars also cannot park in the connecting road from the circle to the upper lot. All cars are to enter the upper end of the parking lot. Upon entering the lot, ALL cars will proceed to the lower parking lot by the portable classrooms to wait for students. If all parking spots are full on the lower parking lot, a line should be started on the edge of the lot on the side that is closest to the school. Do not block the main road leading to the upper parking lot.

You are not permitted to pull over and wait for students in the pick-up area, as this causes congestion and backs up cars or buses trying to get into the school. You can, however, stay in line if your child is ready and waiting. Do not park in areas that are not actual parking spaces in the upper or lower lot. Please be alert for students at all times. Students are not permitted to leave JAMS property to be picked up by car. John Adams is not responsible for the safety of students who leave campus property to be picked up by car.

Taking the Bus?

Knowing your bus number and schedule is one of the first assignments for many students. Bus schedules are usually published in Charleston newspapers just prior to the first day of school. Information is also available from the KCS Bus Garage at 304-766-0373 and on the KCS website. We recommend that new students ask their morning bus driver if they will take the same bus on the afternoon trip home.

Traffic will enter from Presidential Drive. Since the parking lot is one way only, please continue to move all the way around the big circle towards the softball field and then come back toward the portables. Do not take the smaller circle as it jeopardizes the safety of those in the parking lot. Please do not enter the bus circle after 2:20, as buses will be entering in preparation for dismissal.

Sports Athletic Boosters

JAMS Boosters, which supports the school’s excellent athletic program, is preparing for the 2019-20 school year. Any student who participates in one of the school’s 18 teams receives an automatic membership into Boosters, a policy started four years ago. The Booster’s board consists of 15 members, with the Principal and Athletic Director added as voting, ex-officio members. The group meets monthly with coaches and team representatives to plan activities, improvements, and discuss relevant issues. General membership meetings are held twice a year-once in the fall and once in the spring-to coincide with the annual meeting. One of the primary functions of the Booster’s board is to work with coaches and teams to raise funds to support team activities, including uniforms, pre-game meals, facility maintenance and development, and coaches’ salaries. If you wish to become involved or are interested in learning more, feel free to contact Bill Patterson at [email protected].
