In turn, many doors of opportunity are being opened to them. For example, Kevin Hamblin, an incoming senior welding student, is simultaneously enrolled at Grant County High School and Gateway Community and Technical College. His skills in this high-demand field will provide an impressive array of career options immediately upon graduation. Samantha Perry, a 2013 graduate, is currently using the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification she received at GCHS to work her way through nursing school. Dana Liggett (’14) plans to use what she learned in the CTC Bio-med program to jump-start her pre-med studies at the University of Kentucky this fall. Chris Back (‘13), a GCHS Mechatronics student, elected to accept Mazak’s offer of employment plus Mazak-paid tuition/books for a degree and career in advanced manufacturing. In addition to these opportunities for traditional Grant County High School students, the CTC is now prepared to provide similar opportunities to the community’s adult population. This fall, evening classes which lead to industry-recognized certifications in medical assisting (Certified Nursing Assistant), Mechatronics (a component of advanced manufacturing), and Welding will be offered at the Grant County Schools Career and Technical Center. These programs lead to careers in fields that are considered to be in high demand for the Northern Kentucky region and provide long-term employment opportunities. The classes to be offered at the Grant County Schools CTC are very competitively priced and will feature the same curriculum, assessment, and certification as provided by other regional post-secondary institutions. Additionally, thanks to partnerships with the Northern Kentucky Area Development District / Workforce Development Board, the Grant County Career Advancement Center, and their supporting agencies, it is possible that individuals may qualify for certain workforce development funds that will provide this training at no cost or reduced cost. To determine eligibility for work force development funds, please contact Katrina Harris- Greene at 859.813.8124. Additional information regarding the CTC adult programming may be found at www.grant.kyschools.us or by emailing John Sanders at [email protected]. Because a minimum class size will be required, those interested are encouraged to contact John Sanders as soon as possible. These efforts are being made by Grant County Schools as part of a larger initiative by several Grant County entities to ensure our community is making progress toward becoming a “Work Ready Community” as a measurement of the quality of our workforce. GRANT COUNTY SCHOOLSADOPTS NEW MISSION

When school starts this Fall, Grant County Schoolswill introduce its new Vision, Mission, BeliefStatements, and Goals.

“Our new mission statement is very kid-centered,”states Mr. Ron Livingood, Superintendent of Grant County

Schools. “We want every staff member, every student, and every family toembrace the idea that our focus is on providing the culture, instruction, and

activities that allow the individual student to perform at his/her best.”

The new Vision, Mission, Belief Statements, and Goals are as follows:

VISIONOPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL WITH PROMISE-PASSION-PURPOSE-PROGRESS-PRIDE

MISSION The mission of Grant County Schools is to appreciate each student’s unique potential and toadvocate for excellence in every child.

BELIEF STATEMENTS We believe: • There is PROMISE in every child.• Our PASSION activates teaching and ignites learning.• Our PURPOSE is to engage every child in learning and prepare every child for life.• Every child can and should make continual PROGRESS.• PRIDE in our profession, our schools, and most importantly, our students is foundational for

successful learning.

GOALS • Create a culture that fosters physical, mental, emotional and social well-being in students and

staff.• Provide robust aesthetic opportunities in extra- and co-curricular activities — including

athletics, academics, and the arts — that exemplify high level performance opportunities for allstudents and provides rich cultural opportunities for the community.

GCHS SENIORS PARTICIPATE IN KENTUCKYGOVERNOR’S SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Grant County High School was well representedthis summer by six of its finest students at theKentucky’s prestigious Governor’s ScholarsProgram (GSP). Incoming seniors, Samantha Gray,Harlee Havens, Conrad Jaconette, BethanyLawrence, Ben Willoughby, and Macy Wright, eachhad the honor of attending the stimulating, five-week residential program hosted at variousuniversities across the state.

The purpose of the Governor’s Scholars Program isto encourage the development of Kentucky’s next

generation of civic and economic leaders. GSP challenges students to consider their potential, and even their responsibility to aspire to future positions of leadership by posing the question, “Ifnot you, who? Who will be our leaders in research, politics, medicine, technology, education, ifnot you?” Academic and personal growth for each participant is nurtured in a challenging, non-traditional environment in which communication, ingenuity, creativity, team work, and similarskills are the focus, rather than the need to compete or excel in the pursuit of a particular gradeor recognition.

While the program is not competitive once the scholars arrive, the application process is. It isnot unusual for a student to invest 40 hours or more on their application, but participants say it’scertainly worth the investment. Conrad Jaconette reports, “I learned how important communityis and how one person can change the future for the better. My experience at GSP was lifechanging.” Ben Willoughby counted the relationships he built with other participants as beingmost impactful.

GCHS’s six students attended GSP as follows: Samantha Gray, Macy Wright, and Ben Willoughbyattended Murray State University; Harlee Havens, and Bethany Lawrence attended MoreheadState University; while Conrad Jaconette experienced GSP at Bellarmine University in Louisville. For additional information about the GSP program, visit their website at: http://gsp.ky.gov/ orcontact Nicole Davis, GCHS Counselor, at 859.824.9739.
