Back to School!
Welcome everyone! It’s been a while since our last update and we have lots to share with you! The new school term started at the beginning of September after a month’s holiday and the children are happy to be back. The children of LWCC had a great holiday and enjoyed the
extracurricular activities, especially as the weather in Arusha has also been so lovely and warm at the moment! A few of the students studying at Yakini School shared with us what they loved most about school and what they were looking forward to ahead of the new term.

LWCC Issue 2: September 2013
The Class of 2013
It was a big week for Class 7 recently at Yakini Primary School.
After studying hard for the past seven years, the students took their
final examinations which was followed a few days later by their
graduation.
Many guests came along to help celebrate the special occasion
with the students including parents, teachers, the LWCC children
and the Kimaro Family all joining together in dance, singing, a
fashion show, music, food and speeches.
From all the team at Yakini , we would like to say a BIG THANK-YOU
to everyone who has supported our students to reach their
graduation, it was an unforgettable event and we are so proud of
them all!
Emily Weinlick travelled to Tanzania with her mother for two weeks in September
and at the age of 12, Emily has been LWCC’s youngest volunteer. Her passion
and efforts to help have amazed other volunteers and the LWCC team. We invited
Emily to share her story about her time volunteering in Africa. You can visit her fundraising page at http://www.gofundme.com/2x2h74
“My grandfather has been coming to Africa every couple of months for several years so when my mom asked if I wanted to go to Africa with her, of course I said yes! About three months before we were planning to leave, I put together a GoFundMe page about my trip at LWCC. I was able to fundraise all my travel costs plus a $2,000 donation for sponsorships. I love kids and I wanted to help them in their education ( I teach my two youngest siblings a lot when we are homeschooling at home). I wanted them to feel that people still care about them. The kids are very sweet and kind. They are so open to meeting new people. After I learned about the lives of some of the kids before they came to LWCC, it became even more important to me to do whatever I can to continue working with the Kimaros. The centre provides everything a child needs – food, shelter, education, friends – but most of all, hope and love. I have decided to come back here every four months and I’m lucky I homeschool and can travel. Before I came, I decided to try and raise funds for a new playground at Yakini. When I return home, I will continue fundraising to make that happen. Being a kid myself, I know playing is 70% of who we are!”

LWCC volunteers get digging!
As the busy month rolls on, current volunteers Ricardo, Daniel and Diana from Venezuela have been working hard to build vegetable gardens for the children of LWCC with the help of our friends at The Green Living Planet – Benson, Maricel, Adrina and Benjamin. Thanks to the GLP team, Daniel, Ricardo and Diana, we have now built three gardens! These gardens will help the centre to grow its own spinach, carrots, amaranth, green pepper and many other types of vegetables during the dry season.

Our new partner…
We’re really excited about working with Joseph

One of their main funders Mr Matthew Thomas

children with education, food and also helping to
renovate the centre. Finger’s crossed!
