A cruise on the hovseboat offers spectacular views of the

swaying palms, glimpses of the arabian see and beaches at

certain points and fascinating visualso of the idyllic village life.

The kemmannu hoode area is an ecological wonder and home to

numberous migratory birds on the sand reefs as well as shellfish

habitats in the shallow waters near thimman kudru. The flocks

of cormorant, egret, herons, four species of moorhens, water

ducks, siberian storks, purple horons, seagulls, teals and the

different types of kingishers are a sight to water.

1.2. The Backwater:

The undisputed main attraction of a trip to kerala is

traveling through the 90km networks of waterways that fring the

coast and trickle for inland. Long before the advent of roads

these waterways were the slippery highways of klerala and many

villagers today still use paddle power as transport.

Trips through the backwaters crose shallow, palm – firnged

lakes studded with cantilevered chinese fishing nets and travel

along narrow, shady canals where coir (Coconut fibre) copra

(dried coconut meat) and cushews are loaded onto boats. Along

the way are small villages with mosques, churches, temples and

school, villagers going about their daily chores and ting

settlements where people live on narrow spits of reclaimed lend

dewy a few metres wide.

1.5. Research Methodology

Research means thee systematic approach concerning

generalization and the formulation of a theory is re search as

such the term research refers to the systematic method

consisting of enunciating the problem, formulating a hypnothesis,

collecting his facts or data analyzing the facts and reaching

certain conclusion either in the form of solutions toward the

concerned problems.

Research methodology is a way to systematicully solve the

research problem. It has, it may be understood as a science of

studying how research is done scientifically.

1.6. Statement of research problem

Each destination in the country or state has its own geo

socio cultural identity. Therefore it demands specific tourism

6

Page 7: BACK WATER TOURISM

development plans and actions within the umbrella of an overall

tourism perspective for the country.

Back water in BRP is an unexplored destination with

cultural, natural and manmade tourism attraction and it is

undisturbed by man. This itself indicates that excavating things

unknown or hidden has always a great import ant. Being a

resident of back water tourism in BRP a research project related

to the bhaclra river centre as an obvious choise.

There are number of other consideration also while

selecting the present problem for research. Besides the time of

cost consideration, familiarity with region, language advantage

and mainly feeling of doing some thing for the resident.

As regards thematic frame work of research topic i.e. back

water tourism, a case study at BRP was taken up.

Methodology

The data used in the study has largely been of primary

nature. This primary data has been a obtained through

questionnaires with the help of sampling technique. The

secondary data has been o0btained from interned, broachers,

book and publication on the subject of hospitality industry.

Questionnaire:

7

Page 8: BACK WATER TOURISM

2 set of questionnaire (One each for tourist and workers)

are prepared so as to get comprehensive information about

profile of tourism purpose of visit, preferences regarding

facilities, activities, attraction, teiv satisfaction levels etc. Most

of the questions are yes or no questions. some open ended

questions are also included.

Sampling:

Around 30 question natives were distributed randomly

among the visitors and localities to know their opinion about

tourism potential of back water in BRP.

Analysis and interpretation of data:

Keeping in view the objectives of the study, the data

collected through questionnaires is andlyzed and interpreted with

the help of statistical tabulations methods using average and

percentage approach where ever needed, though analysis and

interpretation of data are done by manually, computer facilities

are also used to translator relevant empirical information in to

illustrations in the form of diagrams.

1.7 Limitations of the study

Obviously all studies and researcher have their own

limitation. Need not to say, the researcher while working on this

8

Page 9: BACK WATER TOURISM

project had many limitations. To mentions the major ones are as

under.

Due to lack literature on back water tourism in BRP

primary information has been collected by field visits.

The size of the sample has been yet another timitation,

because many of the respondents were not accept to fill up

the questionnaire.

Duration of the study was limited and up to data details

about destinations were not available.

2.1 Introduction

2.2 Types of water based adventure sports

2.3 Water sports in India

2.4 River running and kayaking water sports in India

2.5 Boat tours in India

2.1 Introduction:

India's vast geographical diversity provides a wealth of

outdoors adventure. all tastes are catered for from the gentlest

to the fast placed and there is something for every level or

competence the beginner and the expert. Not only does India

have an immense variety of outdoor thrills, but price here are

extremely low by international standards.

10

Page 11: BACK WATER TOURISM

Altitude range from 9.000 feet to 14.500 feet above sea

level and trekkers need only a reasonable degree of physical

fitness, prior experience not being necessary. In laddakh, the

lowest altitudes is 11.000 feet above sea level and with the

shortage of oxygen, acclimatization is compulsory, some passes

commonly encountered during a trek being as high as 1800 feet

above Sea level.

Each of India's coastal state gujavat, mahavashtra, goa,

karnataka kerala, tamil nadu, andhra prodesh and orissa have

choice of beaches. Those in goa are all popular, many offer

luxury resort hotels on the beach itself a few offer wind surfing

and yachting, Gopalur-on-sea in orissa, chorwad and ahmedpur

mandri in gujarat are but two examples of relatively quiet

beaches. Lakshad weep offers excellent wind surfing, snorkelling

and scuba diving in the crystal clear waters of the lagoons which

surround each island.

2.2. Types of water based adventure sports

In the following water based adventure sports:

1. Water skiing

2. White water rafting

3. Sailing

4. Canoeing

11

Page 12: BACK WATER TOURISM

5. Angling

6. Scuba diving, snorkeling and free diving

7. Spear fishing

8. Yachting

9. Kayaking

10. Windsurfing

11. Swimming and Diving

12. Boat Racing

13. Regattas

14. Ice-Boating Boating

15. Adventure cruises

16. Para sailing

17. Tubing

18. Discing

19. Surfing

20. Wake boarding

1. Water Skiing:

Water skiing is a sport / game and recreational activity and

is popular in many countries around the world where appropriate

12

Page 13: BACK WATER TOURISM

conditions exist an expanse of water unaffected by wave motion,

rivers, lakes, and sheltered bays are all popular for water skiing.

Standard water skis were origin ding made of wood but are

usually constructed out of fiberglass based composites. They are

of similar length to downhill snow skis but are somewhat wider.

Instead of a rigid binding, they have rubber molded binding in

which the skier's feet are placed skiers are pulled along by a rope

with a hatchel fitted at one end and attached to a powerboat at

the other.

2. White water Rafting:

River rafting is increasingly becoming the most popular

adventure sport in the conntry. Age groups varying from nine-

year-old school children to a seventy four year old grandmather

have rafted down rivers in India. No previous experience or

swimming ability is required.

3. Sailing:

The challenge of the elements and the spirit of adventure

inspired seafarers in their voyages in ancient time. The same

reasons that attracts people to water sports.

Mans relationship to water is one of the most paradoxical

and contrary things in nature. Human beings are physically

mostly water, they cannot live without it, yet water manifested as

13

Page 14: BACK WATER TOURISM

floods, storms and hurricanes at sea, is offal to man. Water cam

be beautiful and refreshing but it can also carry water born

diseases.

4. Canoeing:

The canoe developed from the seagoing dugouts of the

carib Indians of the Caribbean island. These dugouts were made

from Iarge tree trunks, which had been shaped and hallowed out.

The word 'canoe' comes from ' kanu' the carib word for such a

dugout.

Canoeing as a leisured activity has grown rapidly in recent

years with the onset of pakage holidays which usually combine

camping and white water rafting in an attraction parcel which

offers thrills, adventure and challenge.

5. Angling:

Where there is a river, there is a catch, and the whole of

India is garlanded with rivers has much for an angler so get

cracking and you bet it the snow fed streams definitely have

something to feed you, will like the taste.

With the numberous rivers streams and coastal areas, India

offers itself as the right catch. For truvellers fishing the various

coastal areas be a souvce of great joy to the fisherman. The wide

rivers are ideal for trait and masheer fishing.

14

Page 15: BACK WATER TOURISM

6. Scuba diving snorkelling and free diving:

The diving suit shared with the diving bell, the major

disadvantage of being heavy, often difficut to operate and of

tying the diver to the surface by his breathing tube. Although

these disadvantages, were see apparent. They were only

overcome through advances in technique made during the

second half of the 19th century.

7. Sking Diving:

A diver who merely wishes to make shallow descent

requiring few moments under water has only to equip himself

with a small mask. A great member of models are available. They

consist basically of alarge pane of safety glass over the eyes,

secured to the divers heads by a rubber membrance and rubber

straps improved models have small value for ejecting water

which gets inside the mask.

8. Spear fishing:

The greatest single under water sports attraction remain

under water hunting or spear fishing. The sports is of relatively

recent origin. It required the invitation of device to extend the

divers's range of vision under water and water proof goggles did

not appear until the early 1930s. The sport was publicized by

guy gilputric from this lute start it spread rapidly throughout the

world.

15

Page 16: BACK WATER TOURISM

9. Yachting:

Yacht may be defined as a power driven vessel used for

racing purposes or for pleasure. It is light and comparatively

small vessel. Boats propelled by paddles, oars or out pored

motors are not considered yachts. Yachting is considered as the

sport of racing and cruising in sailing craft.

10. Kayaking:

Most kayak trips use stable crafts designed for use by

novices. They seat two people in comfort kayak touring does not

require any special skills. At the start, the leader gives

instructions in simple padding technique.

11. Windsurfing:

Perhaps the fasterst growing water sport though is

windsurfing. It's exponents rank in millions worldwide and its

advancement into the competitive area has arrived with

breathtaking speed it's greatest exponents describe it as a

medley of sailing ballest, gymnastics and self expression which

the inventor of the sail board perhaps never dreamed possible.

12. Swimming and diving:

16

Page 17: BACK WATER TOURISM

Swimming is an action of self support and self-propulsion in

water as practiced by man. It is one of the most useful as well as

pleasurable accomplishment of man. It was very popular in the

training of warriors in the days of early Greece and Rome.

Many methods of swimming instructions have been tested

as changes in stroke took place. Types of swimming strokes

commonly used in order to present popularity are:

1. Crawling

2. Side stroke

3. Back stroke

4. Breast stroke

5. Butterfly

13. Boat pacing :

The major division in motor boat competition are stock in

board, stock out board, in board hydroplane and out board

hydroplane.

Boating:

Boating for pleasure and enjoyment has been in practice

for several years. later on it was identified as a sport and

17

Page 18: BACK WATER TOURISM

increased tremendously in popularity all over the world in 20 th

century.

Now we find that there are many pleasure boats:

The first modern Olympia was staged in Athens in 1896.

There was no rowing. In 1904, the game were held in st-louis and

the us made a clean sweep of the rowing events. In 1908 great

Britain won are four events of olympic rowing championship.

15. Ice-Boating:

Another adventure sports is the ice-boating. The sport of

saiding and racing ice boat once involved boats costlier. It also

required costly skippers and crew. In the second half of the 20th

century, the sport limited itself to small light but fast boats the

Butch men were the first to take active interest in ice-boating

sport.

16. Adventure cruises:

Cruises are to remote regions. These are different from

standard tourist cruises. Rather than indulging in luxury and

entertainment, they focus on wildlife and nature and the

remoteness of the destination is the strongest appeal adventure

cruises take place on rugged, practical ships designed for icy

cruises or shallow jungle rivers.

Cabin cruising:

A cabin cruiser can be many things:

1. It is a means of vacation, weekend overnight travel.

19

Page 20: BACK WATER TOURISM

2. It is a practicing seamanship and navigation on inland lakes

and streams or coastal waters.

3. It is pleasant base for entertaining, picnicking, exploring,

fishing, running a regatta boat, two boat, ferry boat or a

pretentious status symbol.

The typical cruise would have:

1. Sleeping births for four or more persons

2. Cooking gas/ stove

3. Sink

4. Ice box / refrigerator

5. Toilet facilities

6. Storage

7. Lockers

8. Water tank.

17. Para Sailing:

Human have always dreamed to be up in the air with

wings. Now tourism can help amateurs weighing between 40-70

kgs to releas this ambition. No advance training or special skill is

needed and the game is not expersive either.

18. Discing:

Discing consists of standing on a circular wooden disc and

being towed behind the boat. The disc supports the rider by

means of spreading the weight out evenly across the water. It

requires good balance, and as a result discing cannot be

20

Page 21: BACK WATER TOURISM

performed at extremely high speeds, meaning it is sometimes

viewed as due.

19. Surfing:

Surfing is a recreational activity in which individuals paddle

into a wave on a surfboard, jump to their feet, and are propelled

across the water by the force of the wave. Suring's appeal

probably derives from an un usual confluence of elements.

Adrenaline, skill and high paced maneuvering are set

against a naturally unpredictable backdrop.

20. Wake boarding:

Wakeboarding is a board sport. It was created from a

combination of water skiing, snow boarding and surfing

techniques.

2.3 Water sports in India:

Water sports in Goa:

Diving, windsurfing yachting, scuba diving and snorkeling.

Those visiting goa. Will find ample opportunity to indulge in all

Ganga is a more popular stretch with several interesting patches

like the galf course and so on however, to the initated rafter, this

might seem like tame stuff. They might find the swifter beas,

with unpredictable temper, a much better challenge.

For a truly unforgettable and ( tumultuous) experience

3.3 Kerala Houseboats

The houseboats in Kerala, south India, are huge, slow

moving, exotic barges used for leisure trips. They are a reworked

model of kettuvallams (In the Malayalam language) kettu means

“tied with ropes”, and vallam means “boat”] which, in earlier

times, were used to carry rich and spices from kuttanad to the

kochi port Kerala houseboats were considered a convenient

means of transportation.

The populating of Kettuvalloms has returned in the function

as major tourist attractions. Many find the kettuvallam an ideal

means of exploring the beauty of the Kerala backwaters.

Such a houseboat is about 60 to 70 feet [about 18 to 21

meters] long and about 15 feet [about 5 meters] wide at the

middle. The hull is made of wooden planks that are held together

by ropes of coconut fiber. The usual wood is ‘ Anjili’, the root is

made of bamboo pales and palm leaves. The exterior of the boat

is painted with protective coats of cashew nut oil.

3.4 Water sports in kerala

32

Page 33: BACK WATER TOURISM

Keralas, the land of fascinating backwards and lacked, is

famous for its aquatic sports. The snake boat kace of laeraua is a

unique feature of this state with its 544 kms of curving palm-

shaded camals and lagoons and her 42 mountain –borne rivers.

There are many special aquatic events that are being held

every years on the backwaters, particularly during August-

September period. The place of pride among these events goes

to the snake boat Regutta at Arammula, which is well known for

the parthasarthy temple. The pampa river at arammual is the

venue of the race. Arammula is situated around 10 kms to the

east of cchengannur and important railway and roadway station

michway between. Thiruvanthapuram and Kochi.

3.5 Kerala Boat Races

Chundan vallams or snake boats are narrow boats over 100

feet long with a raised prow that stands 10 feet above water and

resembled the hood of a snake. Traditionally these were used by

local rulers to transport soldiers during waterfront wars. In

modern times, it has spawned a new spont, the vallam kali [boat

race]. Each chundam vallam accommodates about a hundred

muscular oarsmen.

Boat races are accasions of great excitement and

entertainment with thousands gathered on the banks to watch

33

Page 34: BACK WATER TOURISM

and cheer. Most of these races are held in the kuttamad region of

Alappazha.

Where Jawaharlal Nehru visited in 1952, four traditional

chundan valloms went to receive him. A snake boat race was

organized for him. He was so impressed that when he went back

to Delhi, the sent back a gleaming sliver trophy for a boat race.

Chapter-6

Findings and suggestions

6.1 Findings:

Back water tourism in BRP is a well know destination in

Shimoga district Karnataka state. The shimoga is famous for data

64

Page 65: BACK WATER TOURISM

water destination for Jog Sarvati back water, tuka river in

Gajanure back water and Bhadra river back water is there.

Bhadra back water tourism development in BRP is very

slow. Certain problems which hinders the pace of growth of

tourism in BRP, those are mentioned below:

BRP back water is potential tourist destination which is

accepted by all tourist respondents, who were considered as a

sample for the research but in case of existing facilities available

at BRP tourism destinations most of the respondents are partly

satisfied. The level of satisfaction is important for a tourist as it

enriches the experience, which in turn also serves as a

continuing source of recreation for them. But in context of BRP

the basic facilities like food and accommodation, transportation,

guide services etc. Are inadequate to satisfy the basic needs of

the tourist.

As reveled in the earlier chapter it is indicated of the tourist

visit BRP back water for pleasure trip. But unfortunately effective

supply fr the kind of recreation and entertainment activities that

are greater in demand among the pleasure seekers is not up to

their expectations.

Information and publicity system is yet another area which

is short supply. Most of the respondents visit back water in BRP

by guidance friend and website non of the respondent visited

back water tourism in BRP on the basis of information received

65

Page 66: BACK WATER TOURISM

from tourism offices, travel agent advertisements and to unit

broachers.

The broachers, folders, advertisement and other publicity

material mentally prepare the customers about the realities of

the destination. Unfortunately we don't see such material about

back water tourism in BRP and these are remains conspicuous by

its absence.

Scenic or natural beauty is god gify to any tourist

destination. Analysis of questionnaires reveals the fact that

majority of the respondents like scenic beauty in back water in

BRP, unfortunately these beauty is gradually disappearing due to

the improper maintenance and lack of awareness in the local

people.

Accommodation is one of the basic requirements of the

tourist. But in BRP back water only one river tern lodge there,

and this lodge booking the online method, seem to be a major

short coming for tourism development in back water in BRP.

Guide service is yet another major deficiency.

It is indicated that majority of the tourist propose to visit

leisure, entertainment, and water adventure activities. But these

are the places, which aren't were connected by transportation.

And also researcher found that these are facing lack of hotel and

accommodations guide service. Back water in BRP even we don't

66

Page 67: BACK WATER TOURISM

see any hotel and also if tourist prefer public transport he has to

walk nearly 11/2 km to reach back water.

Development program by government is another area

which seeks suggestion. Many localities expressed government

did not take any developmental measures for promotion of

tourism in BRP. without government intervention it is not possible

to promote BRP back water as a popular tourist destination.

Transportation is another factor on which the success of

tourism industry largely depends upon. A good transportation

service gives a faster growth rate in tourism. what is required is

efficient, cheap comfortable and transport facility. In BRP the

road transport is not that much developed to link different tourist

destinations. Even the condition of road are good they are

lacking regular maintenance. Certain destination are ignored and

remain neglected by tourist because of lack of proper transport

mode.

6.2 Suggestions

The above existing short comings generally felt by the

majority of tourist. If we remove these draw backs, would

enhance the overall tourism potential of back water. Here a few

suggestion which need to be implemented in this regard.

Recreation and entertainment facilities at the destination

directly enhance the satisfaction levels of tourist. Moreover

the are also vital for mental and physical health of the host

67

Page 68: BACK WATER TOURISM

population. Therefore there is an urgent need to plan

recreation and entertainment amenities at different

destination according to its average personality.

This study indicates poor services in transportation

facilities. Therefore the problem of transportation needs to

be attended immediately. The only remedy for

transportional problem is encouraging private investment

for providing better tourist carriages and government

should take immediate steps to maintain the roads and

other facilities.

Shopping, local art craft, fairs and festivals local cuisines

and falk traditions, which constitute on integral part of

tourist product mix must be promoted in an integrated way

so that they could have synergetic impact towards creating

on ideal tourism magnetic environment in the taluk.

Various respondents in answering the questionnaire

complained for accommodation cost is more only one river

tern lodge is there. The river term lodge ten twin, beded

accommodations there future 20 tourist stay the lodge. In

order to improve the accommodation facilities hygienic

condition should be improved in BRP. So for as the tariff are

concerned govt must take some legislative measure to

regulate them.

68

Page 69: BACK WATER TOURISM

Willing and active involvement of local people is an

essential prerequisite for the success of any development

programme. It is more vital in case of tourism where the

success depends entirely on the human relations.

Therefore there is an immediate need to infuse tourism

awareness in the society to ensure a positive interaction

between hosts and guests as also to encourage tourism

entrepreneurship.

The publicity and marketing strategies are very poor.

Therefore there is an urgent need to design marketing and

promotional strategy so as to increase the tourism traffic in

the district headquarters. Broachers folders about opining

up of information center provide valuable information abut

destination. These are helps to increase the inflow of

tourist traffic by acting as promotional measure.

At the end the need for the close coordination between

private and public sector tourism organization at different

levels is the key to success in tourism development.

Government participation is very necessary any

development provides sufficient incentives and packages

to the tourist, it will increase the inflow of tourists. Bow

these facilities are largely depending on government

policies. A clear cut policy with on efficient strategy can

only improve the present situation. Government should

69

Page 70: BACK WATER TOURISM

open new tourism information offices within the destination

and up to data information about at the tourist destination

should be made available to tourist.
