Bacteria

Page 2: Bacteria

• All the bacteria reproduce using binary fission and they grow by reproducing

• Bacteria have a cell wall, DNA, a flagella, a pili, ribosomes, a plasma membrane, and a cytoplasm

• Bacteria can sense in their enviorment changes in molecular concentrations as small as 0.1 percent.

Helpful Bacteria

Page 4: Bacteria

Lactobacillus

• Lactobacillus helps reduce diarreha and help injest dairy products containing lactose more easily

• Lactobacillus is rod shaped

Page 5: Bacteria

Bifidobacaterium

• Bifidobacterium are rods in the shape of a Y or V

• Bifideobacterium helps reduce diarreha and MIBS (mitigate irritable bowel syndrome)

Page 6: Bacteria

Propionibacterium freudenreichii

• Swiss starter cultures include this bacteria, which produces carbon dioxide bubbles during aging, giving swiss cheese it holes

Page 7: Bacteria

Acidophilus

• When this bacteria is place in a sugar rich eviorment, they begin to eat the sugars. They convert these sugars into various things, including lactic acid.

• As you can see, Acidophilus is a rod shaped bacteria.

Page 8: Bacteria

Rhizobium

• The bacteria colonize plant cells within root nodules; here the bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen to ammonia and then provide organic nitrogenous compounds such as glutamine or ureides to the plant. The plant provides the bacteria with organic compounds made by photosynthesis.

Harmful Bacteria

Page 10: Bacteria

Streptococcus Pyogenes

• Streptococcus Pyogenes is the bacteria responsible for common human diseases like sore throats. It’s also responsible for serious conditions like toxic shock syndrome

• S. Pyogenes is a spherical shape

Page 11: Bacteria

Escherichia Coli (E. Coli)

• E. Coli is the cause of gastrointestinal diseases, diarreha, and symptoms associated with food poisoning

• E. Coli is rod shaped

Page 12: Bacteria

Vibrio Cholerae

• Vibrio cholerae is responsible for the outbreak of cholera, killing many poeple throughout history. It’s not as common anymore but it’s still a problem for people who travel to less develped areas

• Vibrio Cholerae is comma shaped

Page 13: Bacteria

Enteritis Salmonella

• Enteritis Salmonella is the most common cause of food poisoning. It mostly affects kids and infants, causing dehydration and vomiting

• Enteritis Salmonella is rod shaped

Page 14: Bacteria

Salmonella Typhi

• Salmonella Typhi is uncommon in developed countries but is a big killer in underdevelped ones. Symptoms include high fever, diarreha, and vomiting.

• Salmonella Typhi is rod shaped
