Bacto Treat OWS Petroleum Oil Digestant for Oil Water Separators Due to mounting environmental concerns, the use of wastewater pre-treatment and reclamation systems in the vehicle wash and heavy manufacturing industries are becoming more prevalent. They are designed to conserve water and reduce the amount of untreated water being flushed into municipal sewer systems. While this approach to waste management seems practical, without tedious maintenance, sludge and solids rapidly accumulate. Failure to reduce the waste to an acceptable level will result in costly surcharges, generate offensive odors, and require frequent and costly pump outs. To solve this problem, Continental Research has engineered Bacto Treat OWS, a petroleum oil digestant for oil water separators. Using a unique blend of spore-forming bacillus bacterial strains, Bacto Treat OWS breaks down petroleum-derived contaminants such as benzene and toluene and converts them into carbon dioxide and water. Each strain was selected for optimum enzyme production to assure efficient and comprehensive breakdown of sludge and solids created by hydrocarbons such as gasoline, diesel fuel, motor oil, washing agents, dirt/dust particles, and traffic grime. Bacto Treat OWSPetroleum Oil Digestant for Oil Water Separators

Due to mounting environmental concerns, the use of wastewater pre-treatment and reclamation systems in the vehicle wash and heavy manufacturing industries are becoming more prevalent.

HYDROCARBON REDUCTION

Bacto Treat OWS substantially reduces the need for pumping out the oil/water separators because the bacterial strains digest the organic solids with the release of carbon dioxide and water. Digestion and utilization of solids by the bacterial blend was monitored in wastewater by measuring the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and suspended solids over time.

After 30 days, wastewater treated with Bacto Treat OWS showed a 50% reduction in BOD and 80% reduction in suspended solids.

Hydrocarbon Consuming Bacteria

REDUCTION OF AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS

Bacto Treat OWS is a proprietary blend of bacterial cultures specifically designed to degrade both heavy and light distilled oil fractions of hydrocarbons. These fractions along with a complex mixture of petroleum hydrocarbon compounds are found in gasoline, #4, #5 and #6 fuel oils, crude oil and coal tar. A study was performed measuring the degradation of the major aromatic compounds in gasoline by Bacto Treat OWS.

The concentration of the BTEX compounds (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene) was reduced 35%, 94%, 80% and 65% respectively.

Reduction of Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Gasoline by Bacterial Strains

SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN PETROLEUM DEGRADATION

Some aromatic compounds (e.g. benzene) are harmful to humans and the environment; therefore remediation or removal of the pollutants is necessary before disposal of the waste. Spore forming strains of bacteria were isolated and the hydrocarbon-degrading ability of each was measured.

After ten days these new bacterial strains, included in Bacto Treat OWS are capable of significantly reducing the concentration of gasoline, diesel, and motor oil by 45%, 64% and 24% respectively.

Oil/Water Separators (OWS) USE MICROBES TO DIGEST OIL IN YOUR OWS.

Bioremediation is a proven technique to minimize the oil content in OWS effluent and sludge and to reduce OWS cleanout frequency. Microbes added to an OWS break down petroleum products suspended or dissolved in the wastewater, floating oil, or sludge. Facilities using bioremediation have eliminated waste water violations and have reported reducing their sludge petroleum content by more than 80 percent. Such reductions can lower the regulatory status of OWS sludge, which will affect the required disposal method and disposal costs.

Bioremediation Benefits• Lower hydrocarbon levels in OWS effluent• Less contaminated sludge and lower volume of sludge• Reduction or elimination of odor

Heavier or Lighter Than Water? OWS’s treat vehicle and floor wash water by allowing substances lighter than water to float and substances heavier than water to sink. Many OWSs also have baffles, coalescers, and oil skimmers to speed-up or enhance separation of these substances.

Areas of use • Military Bases• Motor Pools• Fleet Maintenance Bays• Street Departments • Transit Authorities• City Municipalities• County Road Departments

• Manufacturing Plants• Airports• Auto Dealerships• Machine Shops• Marine Bilges• Truck & Car Washes

Bacto Treat OWS is a unique blend of bacteria specifi cally designed to degrade a variety of petroleum products including fuel oils, crude oil, coal tar, gasoline and diesel oil. Designed specifi cally for petroleum contaminated wastewater, car and truck washes, marine bilges or oil reclamation pits, Bacto Treat OWS diminishes need for pumping out the oil/water separators. It reduces contaminated sludge and lowers volume of sludge. Bacto Treat contains bacterial strains isolated for optimum enzyme production to assure effi cient and comprehensive breakdown of harmful pollutants. It digests organic solids with the release of carbon dioxide and water, while eliminating offensive odors.

FOR CAR AND TRUCK WASHES: It is recommended to clean the recycled water tank in order to remove as much biofi lm as possible and start with fresh water. Use the dosage directions shown below. Regular use of Bacto Treat OWS will keep the entire wash facility smelling fresh and will extend the life of the car wash brushes.

DIRECTIONS: Using a single dose or automatic continuous feed system, feed 18-20 ounces per day into a 500-1,500 gallon tank (65-200 cubic feet). For 1,500 gallon tank (200+ cubic feet) or larger, feed at a rate of 32-40 ounces per day. For best results, dose tank at the end of the day or during low use periods. This allows optional growth time for the bacteria. Regular usage allows the benefi cial bacteria to become established in the tank keeping odors to a minimum. Do not use any disinfectants or bleach in the tank.
