BADGER METER INTRODUCES BEACON ADVANCED METERING ANALYTICS (AMA); NEW POWERFUL END-TO-END MANAGED SOLUTION FOR WATER UTILITIES IS “CLEARLY BETTER”

New solution provides greater visibility to water consumption, reduces technology risks and frees-up utility managers to focus on core competencies

MILWAUKEE – Badger Meter, a leading global innovator and manufacturer of flow measurement and control

solutions, today introduced its new end-to-end managed solution for utility management, BEACON Advanced

Metering Analytics (AMA). BEACON AMA combines the intuitive BEACON AMA software suite with proven

ORION® Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) technology using fixed and cellular networks to give utilities

greater control, more information and enhanced customer service. With the release of BEACON AMA, Badger

Meter also becomes the first major water meter company to release a cost-effective cellular based solution for

system wide deployment.

“Utility managers across the country have told us that while they are experts at running their water utilities, they

aren’t as comfortable with managing communications network infrastructure, system maintenance or software,

which are continually evolving. BEACON AMA is the perfect solution because Badger Meter does it all. Our

ORION Cellular endpoints, along with fixed network endpoints, minimize the need for costly infrastructure. We

also provide ongoing system maintenance and software support. Equally important, the BEACON AMA software

suite provides the decision-making information utility managers need to understand and monitor their water

operations and improve customer service,” said John Fillinger, director of utility marketing for Badger Meter.

“BEACON AMA is a simple and innovative approach that enables two-way communication virtually anywhere and

gives utilities the information and analytics they need without the time and expense of managing their own fixed

network system. With all of these features and benefits, BEACON AMA is the ‘clearly better’ solution in the market

today,” added Fillinger.

Built around a robust software suite, BEACON AMA can easily import meter data and utilize the information to

improve operations and processes for each specific utility’s needs. The software suite includes a customizable

dashboard, the ability to set unique alert conditions, a consumer engagement website and smartphone/tablet app

so customers can view their water usage activity, a secure hosted platform, and integration into current utility

business systems. Water utility managers can expect faster leak detection, easier revenue management, the

Page 87: Badger Meter Utility Solutions Group 2014 Public Relations Media Coverage Report

ability to quantify the effects of their water conservation efforts, easier compliance reporting, and an enhanced

customer service experience.

BEACON AMA is built on the time-tested ORION system for interval data capture and two-way communication.

By utilizing the traditional Badger Meter ORION (SE) Fixed Network endpoints and gateways, along with ORION

Cellular endpoints, a fixed network can now be configured to minimize infrastructure requirements and meet the

unique needs of individual utilities. These flexible options allow a utility to apply the BEACON AMA managed

solution to all services, or to immediately get started with more critical commercial or industrial customers.

BEACON AMA is available exclusively through a managed service designed to minimize costs for deploying and

maintaining the system. This allows utilities to focus their resources on directly managing their water delivery

systems. BEACON AMA comes with the hosted BEACON AMA software suite with regular updates, fixed network

and/or cellular endpoints and long term support and maintenance – all for an affordable one-time activation fee

and a monthly per endpoint fee. The BEACON AMA managed upgrade program is designed to keep utilities in

step with the latest technology advancements. Since there is no need for owned infrastructure, BEACON AMA

pilot programs with ORION Cellular endpoints can be implemented quickly.

To help utilities get the most out of a BEACON AMA system, Badger Meter also offers a comprehensive water

meter product line for residential, commercial and fire service applications that are all compatible with BEACON

AMA. All water meters from Badger Meter are also NSF-compliant and are available in a range of functionalities,

materials and sizes.

BEACON Advanced Metering Analytics is just one more way Badger Meter is Making Water Visible® to utilities

and their customers. To learn more, visit www.badgermeter.com/BEACONAMA, call 800-656-3837 or contact

your local sales representative.

MEDIA ADVISORY

Metering Technologies Expected to Shape 2015 Badger Meter experts can provide insights on metering technologies predicted to help utilities meet

their water management initiatives in 2015 – and beyond TO: Editors DATE: November 6, 2014 WHAT: When considering the current state of the water and wastewater industry, water metering

is an important part of the conversation. As we look back on 2014, a year that saw

many new innovations and advancements in the water and wastewater industry, Badger

Meter experts are available as a resource to discuss the water metering technologies

predicted to help utilities meet their water management initiatives in 2015 – and beyond.

Four key water themes predicted to shape 2015:

Cellular Metering Solutions: In 2014, Badger Meter became the first major water

meter manufacturer to release a cellular-based metering solution for system-wide

deployment with the introduction of its BEACON Advanced Metering Analytics

(AMA) managed solution. As utilities across the country adapt to changing

technology, the ORION® two-way cellular endpoint offered with BEACON AMA has

been met with positive acceptance. A recent IHS Technology report (“Water Meters

Report – 2014”) echoes this sentiment in forecasting that cellular-enabled water

meter shipments are predicted to grow rapidly in North America as utilities look to

minimize capital investments when installing a smart water network.

With cost for implementation a top concern, more utilities will continue exploring new

cellular technology in 2015. As your publication covers this topic, Badger Meter can

comment on the many benefits of cellular, including faster network deployment

through use of existing networks, as well as 24/7 access to metering data (cellular

networks are typically the first to be restored in the event of an emergency).

Managed Systems & Analytics: In a newly released study conducted by Zpryme

and the Smart Water Summit (“2014 U.S. Smart Water Utility Report”) surveying 75

utilities across the United States, it was found that the most important technologies

Page 98: Badger Meter Utility Solutions Group 2014 Public Relations Media Coverage Report

for smart water systems include smart meters (76%), data and analytics (69%) and

meter data management systems (55%). As evidenced by this study, utilities

continue to adopt automatic and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) technology

and, as they do, they are increasingly looking to third party providers to help them

do it. Enter the managed system approach.

Seeing the need for improved customer service, increased analytics reporting and

more efficient operations, utilities are more and more turning to end-to-end,

managed systems, such as BEACON AMA, to help meet their needs. Features of

this approach include built-in infrastructure management services, technology

upgrades and hosted cloud-based software suites, plus built-in customer service

tools. Another appealing feature? Vendor managed software and analytics solutions,

which will help address those utilities who acknowledged in the Zpryme study that,

while they realize they have technology skills gaps in their workforce, they do not

have plans to hire technology staff in the next year. A leader in managed system

technology, Badger Meter can comment on the differences between managed and

more traditional AMI systems, as well as serve as a resource on the factors that will

influence the rate of adoption for meter data management systems in the coming

years.

Proactive Consumer Communications: Encouraged by an increased focus on

customer service and more efficient use of resources, customer engagement

websites and smartphone/tablet apps came into play in 2014.

In today’s increasingly on-demand world where consumers are used to tracking

virtually every aspect of their lives, water usage data available at the click of a

button has proven to be very appealing for customer-focused utilities looking to save

money and resources. In January 2014, it was estimated that 58% of American

adults owned a smartphone – and over 86% of the time spent on smartphones is

being spent on mobile apps. Seeing an opportunity to proactively communicate with

customers beyond monthly statements, utilities are expected to further explore these

platforms, such as the EyeOnWater app/portal offered by Badger Meter, in 2015.

This trend is also supported by the same Zpryme study, which found that 40% of its

respondents have plans in the works for developing apps for both residential and

commercial customers.

Page 99: Badger Meter Utility Solutions Group 2014 Public Relations Media Coverage Report

Metering Matters: While the media, and even the general public, continue to

discuss advancements in AMR/AMI/AMA technology, it can be easy to lose sight of

perhaps the most important reporting tool of them all: the meter. As was reported in

2014, some utilities, even those in drought-stricken areas, either do not meter or

have very dated equipment – making new metering installations and upgrades a

heightened focus for 2015, especially for those utilities looking to install smart meter

networks.

And, just as metering software and infrastructure has evolved over the past several

years, so has the meter. Badger Meter remains committed to expanding its

innovative metering technology offerings, including comprehensive products for

residential, commercial and fire service applications. As part of this discussion, the

company can serve as a resource on a variety of metering technologies and

applications including solid-state metering; high frequency sound wave measuring

technology offered by ultrasonic metering; electromagnetic flow metering

advancements; or cost-effective, yet reliable meters utilizing nutating disc

technology.

WHO: As your publication explores metering technology advancements expected to shape 2015,

John Fillinger, director of utility marketing, and Kristie Anderson, product marketing manager,

at Badger Meter can serve as resources on key trends and innovations that will influence the

year ahead.
