As a manufacturer of sports shoes, clothing and sporting equipment, asics has demonstrated a growing awareness for the preservation of our environment by addressing the issue in three ways.

As a first measure of our commitment, asics have undertaken to totally eliminate PVCs (polyvinyl chlorides), which emit gasses when burned, from our sportswear, shoes, bags and accessories. Furthermore the company is endeavouring to eliminate PVCs from all product packaging and even from point of puchase displays.

The second is to create products that do not waste resources. To do this we have begun to manufacture products made from recycled materials such as our fleece products made from recycled PET bottles.

The third is to create products that protect and strengthen the environment. We now use an extremely fast growing natural fibre source, hemp, as a material for our sportswear in an effort to preserve and encourage the world’s forests.

PVC is a very common and useful material in the manufacture of sports footwear and apparel. It is mostly used as a backing material for synthetics such as synthetic leathers. It is a particularly cheap product for manufacturers to use and is common in moulding, giving a 3D effect on footwear, plus a stiffening effect that can be useful.

It is commonly used on printed T-shirts and sweat tops, where the PVC helps to bind the paint of the print onto the cotton or substrate.

But none of these features denies the fact that PVCs are environmental ‘baddies’. They do not bio-degrade and give off toxic and carcinogenic gases if burned.

Prior to 2000, asics had decided to become a PVC-Free company and in no time we have achieved this goal.

asics use a polyurethane base to mould synthetic leathers on our footwear, which also has the advantage of being softer and less irritating to runners. To most of our competitors the feel of the synthetic fabric is most important having little regard to the back due to price constraints.

To asics, the backing used is very important.

asics also use PU on their printed T-shirts, using an Australian company, one of only a handful in the world to do PVC-free prints in this way. And asics carry bags are lined with EVA or PVA materials rather than PVC and the very popular asics key rings are manufactured in non-PVC materials.

Other environmental moves made by asics are to use water-based glues in their footwear, which are better for workers and use EVA in a new way so that the powder created in buffing causes no damage to the workers’ lungs.

Becoming PVC-Free has not hindered asics as a ‘purpose- built’ company that strives to produce the best sporting products.

In qualità di costruttore di scarpe, abbigliamento e equipaggiamento sportivo, Asics ha dimostrato un crescente interesse per la preservazione del nostro ambiente indirizzando i prorpri impegni in tre direzioni.

Come prima misura del nostro impegno, Asics ha aderito alla decisione della totale eliminazione del PVC (polivinil cloridrico), che emette gas durante la combustione, dalle nostre scarpe, borse e accessori sportivi. Inoltre la Compagnia sta ultimando l’eliminazione del PVC da tutto il materiale di imballo e da espositori di vendita

La seconda è creare prodotti che non intacchino le risorse naturali. Per fare questo abbiamo cominciato a produrre articoli fatti con materiale riciclato, come il nostro pile realizzato con l’utilizzo di bottiglie in PET riciclate.

La terza è creare prodotti che proteggano e rafforzino l’ambiente. Ora utilizziamo una fonte di fibra naturale estremamente veloce nello sviluppo: la canapa, come materiale per il nostro abbigliamento sportivo, rivolto alla preservazione e allo sviluppo delle foreste del mondo.

Il PVC è un materiale molto comune e usato nella produzione di scarpe e abbigliamento sportivo. È ancora più usato come materiale di base per i sintetici come le pelli sintetiche. E’ un prodotto particolarmente economico per gli usi manifatturieri ed è comune negli stampi, avendo la possibilità di dare l’effetto tridimensionale alla scarpa, oltre all’effetto rinforzante che può essere utile.

E’ comunemente usato nella stampa delle t-shirts e delle felpe, dove il PVC aiuta a fissare la vernice sul cotone.

Ma nessuna di queste specifiche nega il fatto che i PVC siano “dannosi” per l’ambiente. Questi non sono bio-degradabili e, se bruciati, rilasciano gas tossici e cancerogeni

Già prima del 2000, Asics ha deciso di diventare una Società PVC-Free (che non utilizza PVC) e in pochissimo tempo abbiamo raggiunto questo obbiettivo.

Asics utilizza una base di poliuretano per realizzare la pelle sintetica delle sue scarpe, la quale ha anche il vantaggio di essere più leggera e meno irritante per il corridore. Per la maggior parte della nostra concorrenza la mano di un tessuto sintetico è più importante del riguardo all’eliminazione delle scorie del processo produttivo, al fine di avere un prezzo contenuto.

Per Asics,la gestione delle scorie è molto importante.

Asics utilizza anche il PU sulle stampa delle proprie t-shirt, utilizzando una compagnia australiana, una delle poche al mondo nella stampa senza PVC in questo modo.

Altre iniziative a favore dell’ambiente portate avanti da Asics sono usare nelle proprie calzature colle a base di acqua che sono migliori per i lavoratori e l’uso dell’ EVA in modo tale che la polvere creata nella lucidatura non danneggi i polmoni degli operai.

Il fatto di divenire PVC-Free (senza PVC) non ha intralciato il proposito di Asics di diventare una Compagnia che si sforza di produrre i migliori prodotti sportivi.
