Delightful Diwali

DelightfulDiwali

Diwali - the festival of lights is one of the biggest and brightest of all Hindu Festivals.

This year Diwali begins on 13th November.

Diwali celebrates the triumphant victory of good over evil , the glory of light over darkness and the celebration of knowledge over ignorance. It’s a festival of hope and joy.

The word Diwali or Deepavali, means ‘a row of lamps’ that’s marked by a five day celebration, which literally illumines the houses with its brilliance, and dazzles all with its joy. Each of

the five days in the festival of Diwali is separated by a different tradition, but what remains true and constant is the celebration of life, its enjoyment and goodness.

During the Diwali festival people exchange gifts with friends, family and loved ones and decorate their houses with colourful diyas and decorative items. People share their joy and happiness and pray for prosperity and well being.

Every year on the dark nights of Diwali the sound of firecrackers announces the celebration of the favourite festival of Indians. Homes are decorated, sweets are distributed by everyone and thousands of lamps

are lit as part of the celebrations. Of all the festivals celebrated in India, Diwali is by far the most glamorous. Enthusiastically enjoyed by people of every religion, its magical and radiant touch creates an atmosphere of joy and festivity.

Historically, the origin of Diwali can be traced back to ancient India, when it was probably an important harvest festival. However, there are various legends pointing to the origin of Diwali or ‘Deepawali.’ Some believe it to be the celebration of the marriage of Goddess Lakshmi with Lord

Vishnu. Whereas in Bengal the festival is dedicated to the worship of Mother Kali, the Goddess of strength. Lord Ganesha, the symbol of

auspiciousness and wisdom, is also worshiped in most Hindu homes on this day.

In Jainism, Deepawali has an added significance to the great event of Lord Mahavira attaining the eternal bliss of nirvana. Diwali also commemorates the return of Lord Rama along with Sita

and Lakshman from his fourteen year long exile and vanquishing the demon-king Ravana. In joyous celebration of the return of their king, the people of Ayodhya, illuminated the kingdom with earthen diyas (oil lamps) and burst fire crackers.

Diwali, the glorious festival of lights indeed marks a new beginning, a renewal of commitment to family

values, and represents all the good virtues we

seek such as love, reflection,

forgiveness and knowledge

“Of all the festivals celebrated in India, Diwali is by far the most glamorous.”

The Festival of LightsDiwaliDeepawali or

Diwali is one of biggest

and brightest of Hindu festivals. It’s a celebration of life, knowledge and goodness. Mrs Mala Kumar, the wife of HE Dr Mohan Kumar, the Ambassador of India in Bahrain, talks to Pooja Rajpal Kasala about the significance of Diwali in her life and her plans for the upcoming Diwali!

What is the significance of Diwali for you and your family?

Diwali for us, like for the rest of India, is the most popular festival, a festival of lights, that heralds new beginnings and celebrates the triumph of good over evil; an occasion to get together with family and friends and strengthen existing bonds.

How will you celebrate Diwali this year? Have you planned anything special?

I plan to invite friends from Bahrain, the diplomatic community as well as expats which include Indians of course, to an evening reception at my residence where they can mingle with each other and eat Indian cuisine in a relaxed, traditional festive atmosphere. The celebrations continue at Sofitel on November 15th where I along with Renuka and Irwin of La Bonn V plan to recreate the Diwali theme along with a dance performance by a renowned Indian Kathak dance troupe followed by dinner and dancing, a continuation of the Irresistible India series initiated by me.

Are there any traditions or customs you follow every year?

Diwali in the south of India where I come from, would traditionally start with the proverbial “oil bath” at the crack of dawn followed by dressing in new clothes, doing a puja or an offering to the Gods, meeting friends and family and exchanging sweets. I try to replicate most of the traditional customs every year whichever part of the world I am in.

The Festival of Lights

What kind of attire and jewellery will you be wearing on Diwali? Do you have any favourite designers?

For me, Diwali is all about tradition and my attire would be a lovely, traditional Kancheepuram silk saree with ethnic jewellery and henna on my hands. I have some favourite shops in Chennai from where I pick up these exclusive sarees and I have already chosen one to wear this year. I also have my designer Prabha Narasimhan in Chennai who designs my saree blouses with embellishments and she does a marvellous job of it.

What do you enjoy the most about Diwali?

Diwali is all about lamps, flowers and festivity that I enjoy so much. And of course the sweets! Unfortunately one has to watch calories these days! I love the parties too since this is an occasion to wear one’s finery and get together with friends.

What are some of the fondest memories of Diwali that you remember?

My fondest childhood memories of Diwali are lighting the oil lamps with my mother and sister, surreptitiously eating the hot gulab jamuns that my mother made and eagerly waiting to wear the new “pattu pavadai” or silk skirt and blouse bought specially for the occasion and feeling very important carrying trays of sweets to friends and relatives’ houses! My not so fond memory was hiding under the dining table, stuffing my ears with cotton and trying to block out the loud sound of firecrackers!

Do you have any theme in mind for Diwali celebrations this time?

Diwali is also a time for giving and although we’ve given to the poor in the past, my husband and I want to be more committed to a cause

and starting now, we want to give back more and help the poor and uneducated in any way we can.

Ideally how do you think Diwali should be celebrated?

Diwali, while being an occasion to celebrate and I’m all for it, should also be a moment of introspection and awakening to do more good. Instead of spending vast amounts

of money on firecrackers which are environmentally unfriendly and on exorbitantly priced clothing, the money should ideally be spent on more worthy causes. While charity should be a year round sentiment and not a one-time event, making it a point to contribute on an occasion would be a start.

How do you bring in the festive season on this island?

Unlike some other countries, Bahrain has a big Indian community and it’s not too difficult to celebrate Diwali! The festive season starts off with various Diwali parties including mine.

You must have travelled the world, do share with us some

unique customs or traditions that you really liked?

Since we did a couple of postings in Switzerland, one special event comes to my mind. It is the Fête de l’Escalade or the annual scaling of the ramparts in December celebrating the defeat of the surprise attack by troops sent by Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy. People dress in period costumes, beat drums, carry torches and parade through the streets of the old town. Celebrations include a large cauldron made of chocolate and usually the youngest (or oldest) person in the room has to break it. My daughter used to be the youngest in her class and was often asked to do this!

Whether it was the Sri Lankans declaring a holiday on full moon or Poya day or the French who always place their hands and elbows on the dinner table and never on the lap, the majlis that marks the Ramadan period in Bahrain, customs and traditions fascinate me!

How will you decorate your home this Diwali?

This Diwali like every year, my house will be illuminated by lights and lamps, flowers will adorn my door and float in my pool, a traditional rangoli with colourful powder or flowers will beautify my doorsteps, ready to welcome friends in celebrating this beautiful, colourful festival of lights!

“Diwali is all about lamps, flowers and festivity that I enjoy so much.”

Unique Celebration

Unique Ways Of Celebrating

• Add your own signature motif to all the gifts going out from your family this year. Choose a relevant motif-perhaps a peacock feather for colour and good luck.

• A creative way of keeping the enthusiastic youngsters away from mischief is to draw Lakshmi’s feet in sindoor mixed in a little milk. Let them follow her footsteps up stairs and all over the home, starting at the front door and meandering off to visit each room in turn.

• Instead of the mandatory nut-and -dried-fruit, why not gift family, friends, neighbours a pretty tray of spices this year? Order superior quality cardamom, vanilla and pepper online. Arrange in a pretty tray or tie in a bundle with a ribbon bow; seal with cling-wrap to give away. If you can add more exotic aromatics and make a really large box of it, why not get them all arrayed in a lightweight custom-made tray with a fitted

glass cover? That way, your friends and relatives have the option of proudly framing it to hang up above their dining table for extra savour at meal times.

• Go for marigold this year. Dress up your home in gold and green (money plants for luck). String curtain rings, hang from ceilings and wreath lights.

• Who says mehendi is for just weddings? Using this beautiful body art to accentuate party outfits - a pretty paisley (it need not be elaborate) instantly puts you in the celebratory mood. You can also throw a “mehendi afternoon” for friends. Sit out in the sun with spicy munches and tangy drinks.

• There are many people who cannot afford even one square meal so, how can they afford Diwali celebrations? In this season cut short your list of crackers and use that money in buying them food. Your joy will be doubled and your kitty will brim over with blessings and wishes.

• Lend a festive and an ethnic touch to your dresses. To really stand out, layer your chikan kameez with zari-bordered silk dupatta instead. You can also wear a delicate chikan top and add a brocade jacket or tote

Archana’s best makeover experience was at Bellacura during pampering sessions. “Bellacura makes sure their clients receive the best comfort and hospitality. My sessions included a fabulous manicure, pedicure, massage, body scrub and facial. I’d definitely recommend the ladies to visit Bellacura, they wouldn’t be disappointed,” Archana commented.

She is fully rejuvenated and excited about celebrating Diwali this year. Friends and family gather to take part in a puja, or religious ritual performed as an offering to various deities. “I also can’t wait to burst some firecrackers!” Archana joked

Shama UchilWahooo’s Marketing Manager, Shama Uchil

is an avid writer and has lived in Bahrain for 16 years. The best part of her makeover session was posing for the camera under the glare of lights. Shama also loved her visit at Bellacura. “I was offered a deep cleansing facial which was specially catered to sensitive skin and an invigorating body treatment that left me feeling pampered and relaxed. Having a stressful nine to five job, leaves me with very little time to care for my skin; I was especially impressed by the facial which had me radiating for days after!” Shama said.

She recommends Bellacura with its friendly team to anyone looking for a new look or relaxation. In addition to the wonderful staff at the salon, Shama was also impressed by the owner Fatima who was quite helpful and hands-on around the salon.

Shama will prepare various delicacies at home in time for Diwali. The festive celebrations include performing religious rituals, followed by fun parties and get-togethers with friends and family

It’s the season of Diwali and time to bring in the festivity with some delicious and mouth watering vegetarian dishes!

We cajoled Chef Arif from Spices Restaurant at Crowne Plaza, to share the secret recipe of the oh-so-delicious Navratan Kebabs!

Really! What’s more fun than indulging in this appetizing savoury with friends and family on the special occasion of Diwali!

Did you know Spices Restaurant has especially created a lavish ‘set-menu’ dinner for Diwali? There would be special Chaats and sweet stations! And complimentary henna along with a live band which would play semi-classical Indian music. This is what we call celebrating Diwali in style!

2.Add carrots, green beans and mushroom and sauté on a slow flame till cooked.

6.Insert the yoghurt and onion mix in the center and press it with your palms to shape it like a flat tikki (Flat/ Round Shape).
