Get to Know Our Board President, Peter MurchiePeter lives on Bainbridge Island with his wife Stephanie and their son Sampson. When he is not coaching youth sports or riding his bike, he is managing programs at the Environmental Protection Agency. Peter has served on the BSF board since 2014.

I got involved with BSF because I am a strong believer in the importance of public education and the role the Bainbridge Schools Foundation plays in our community and for our schools. By serving on the board, I know I am supporting a high quality education for every student.

My proudest moment as a board member I served as the moderator at BSF’s State of Education event this spring. Together with a panel of experts (Senator Christine Rolfes, Tom Ahearne, Amanda Ward, Mev Hoberg, and Dr. Peter Bang-Knudsen) and over 125 community members, we discussed the greatest challenges (and potential solutions) facing our schools.

My vision for BSF’s future As Board President, I want to continue the tradition of expanding the number of island families who actively contribute creativity, energy, and financial support to our schools. Please join us this year as we invest in our students and our schools.

Why are my property taxes not enough? • The state of Washington does not fully fund K-12 public education

• Bainbridge Island students do not receive the same level of support ($ spent per student) compared to many other Puget Sound Districts, including Mercer Island, Bellevue, and Central Kitsap.

• Public school revenues do not increase as property values increase. Bainbridge education levies are limited to 28% of what the district receives for education from state and federal agencies.
