handled design and production, Marcel and Fernand handled company
management.
The first Renault car, the Renault Voiturette 1CV was soldto a friend of Louis' father after giving him a test ride on 24 December
1898. The client was so impressed with the way the tiny car ran and how
it climbed the streets that he bought it.
The brothers recognised the publicity that could be obtained for their
vehicles by participation inmotor racing and Renault made itself known
through achieving instant success in the first city-to-city races held in
Switzerland resulting in rapid expansion for the company. Both Louis
and Marcel Renault raced company vehicles, but Marcel was killed in anaccident during the 1903 Paris-Madrid race. Although Louis Renault
never raced again, his company remained very involved,
including Ferenc Szisz winning the first Grand Prix motor
racing event in a Renault AK 90CVin 1906. Louis was to take full
control of the company as the only remaining brother in 1906 when
Fernand retired for health reasons.
The Renault reputation for innovation was fostered from very early on.
At the time, cars were very much luxury items, and the price of the
smallest Renaults available being 3000 francs reflected this; an amount it
would take ten years for the average worker at the time to earn. In 1905
the company introduced mass-production techniques, and Taylorism in
1913. As well as cars, Renault manufactured taxis, buses and
commercial cargo vehicles in the pre-war years, and during World War
I (191418) branched out into ammunition, military airplanes and
vehicles such as the revolutionary Renault FT-17tank. The company's
military designs were so successful that Renault himself was awarded
the Legion of Honourfor his company's contributions to the war. Thecompany also exported their engines overseas to American auto

It was eventually decided that the company's state-
owned status was detrimental to its growth, and Renault
wasprivatized in 1996. This new freedom allowed thecompany to venture once again into Eastern Europe and
South America, including a new factory in Brazil and
upgrades for the infrastructure in Argentina and Turkey.
Signed on 27 March 1999, the RenaultNissan
Alliance is the first of its kind involving a Japanese and a
French company, each with its own distinct corporate
culture and brand identity, linked through cross-
shareholding. Renault initially acquires a 36.8% stake at a
cost of US$3.5 billion inNissan, while Nissan in turn has a
15 percent stake (non-voting) in Renault. Renault continued
to operate as a stand-alone company, but with the intent to
collaborate with its alliance partner to reduce costs in
developing new products. In the same year Renault bought
99% of the Romanian company Dacia, thus returning after
30 years, in which time the Romanians built over 2 million
cars, which primarily consisted of the Renault 8, 12 and 20.
Following the sale of the Renault Vehicules
Industrials truck and bus division to Volvo in 2001, Renault
retained a minority (but controlling) stake (20%) in the
Volvo Group. (Volvo passenger cars are now a subsidiary
of the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group).
In the twenty-first century, Renault was to foster a
reputation for distinctive, outlandish design. The second
generation of the Lagunaand Mgane featured ambitious,
angular designs which turned out to be successful, with the2000 Laguna being the first European family car to feature
"keyless" entry and ignition. Less successful were the
company's more upmarket models. The Avantime, a
bizarre coup / multi-purpose vehicle, sold very poorly and

was quickly discontinued while the luxury Vel Satis model
did not sell as well as hoped. However, the design inspired
the lines of the second-generation Mgane, the most
successful car of the maker. As well as its distinctive
styling, Renault was to become known for its car safety;currently, it's the car manufacturer with the largest number
of models achieving the maximum 5 star rating
in EuroNCAP crash tests. The Laguna was the first Renault
to achieve a 5 star rating; in 2004 the Modus was the first to
achieve this rating in its category.
For 2004 Renault reported a 43% rise in net income
to 3.5 billion and 5.9% operating margin, of which Nissan
contributed 1,767 million. The Group (Renault, Dacia,
Renault Samsung Motors) posted a 4.2% increase in
worldwide sales to a record 2,489,401 vehicles,
representing a global market share of 4.1%. Renault
retained its position as the leading brand in Europe with
1.8 million passenger cars and light commercial vehicles
sold and market share of 10.8%. In 2005 the Renault
Nissan Alliance held 9.8% of the worldwide market (5.74%for Nissan and 4.04% for the Renault group) with sales of
3,597,748 (Nissan) and 2,531,500 (Renault Group), placing
the alliance fourth after GM, Toyota, and Ford. For the
calendar year of 2008, its total global sales were 6,090,304,
a decrease of 1.1% against a global industry market decline
of 5%, resulting in a 9.4% share, up from 9.1% in
2007. Renault has regularly topped the French car sales
charts, fighting off fierce competition
from Citron and Peugeot.[citation needed] With dropping sales
4800 jobs were cut in 2008, partly because of poor
performance of the Laguna.

NISSAN MOTOR:-
Nissan Motor Company usually shortened
to Nissan. It is multinationalautomakerheadquartered in Japan. It was a
core member of theNissan Group, but has become more independent
after its restructuring underCarlos Ghosn (CEO).
It formerly marketed vehicles under the "Datsun" brand
name and is one of the largest car manufacturers in the world. As
of 2011, the company's global headquarters is located inNishi-ku,
Yokohama. In 1999, Nissan entered a two way alliance
with Renault S.A. of France, which owns 43.4% of Nissan while
Nissan holds 15% of Renault shares, as of 2008. The current
market share of Nissan, along with Honda and Toyota, in
American auto sales represent the largest of the automotive firms
based in Asia that have been increasingly encroaching on the
historically dominant US-based "Big Three" consisting ofGeneral
Motors (GM), Ford andChrysler. In its home market, Nissanbecame the second largest car manufacturer in 2011, surpassing
Honda with Toyota still very much the dominant first. Along with
its normal range of models, Nissan also produces a range of
luxury models branded as Infiniti.
TheNissan VQ engines, of V6 configuration, have been
featured among Ward's 10 Best Enginesfor 14 straight years.

Masujiro Hashimoto founded The Kwaishinsha Motor Car Works in
1911. In 1914, the company produced its first car, called DAT.
The new car's name was an acronym of the company's investors' family
names:
Kenjiro Den
Rokuro Aoyama
Meitaro Takeuchi
It was renamed to Kwaishinsha Motorcar Co., Ltd. in 1918,
and again to DAT Motorcar Co. in 1925.[1] DAT Motors built trucks
in addition to the DAT and Datsun passenger cars. The vast majority
of its output were trucks, due to an almost non-existent consumermarket for passenger cars at the time. Beginning in 1918, the first
DAT trucks were produced for the military market. It was the low
demand of the military market in the 1920s that forced DAT to merge
in 1926 with Japan's second most successful truck maker, Jitsuyo
Motors.
In 1926 the Tokyo-based DAT Motors merged with the Osaka-
based Jitsuyo Jidosha Co., Ltd. a.k.a. Jitsuyo Motors (established
1919, as a Kubota subsidiary) to become DAT Automobile
Manufacturing Co., Ltd. in Osaka until 1932. (Jitsuyo Jidosha began
producing a three-wheeled vehicle with an enclosed cab called the
Gorham in 1920, and the following year produced a four-wheeled
version. From 1923 to 1925, the company produced light cars and
trucks under the name of Lila.)
In 1931, DAT came out with a new smaller car, the first
"Datson", meaning "Son of DAT". Later in 1933 after Nissan took
control of DAT Motors, the last syllable of Datson was changed to
"sun", because "son" also means "loss" in Japanese, hence the name
"Datsun".
In 1933, the company name wasNipponized to Jidosha-Seizo
Co., Ltd. and was moved to Yokohama.

In 1928, Yoshisuke Aikawa founded the holding
companyNippon Sangyo (Japan Industries or Nippon
Industries). "The name 'Nissan' originated during the 1930s
as an abbreviation" used on the Tokyo stock market for
Nippon Sangyo. This company was the famous Nissan"Zaibatsu" (combine) which included Tobata Casting
and Hitachi. At this time Nissan controlled foundries and
auto parts businesses, but Aikawa did not enter automobile
manufacturing until 1933.
Nissan eventually grew to include 74 firms, andbecame the fourth-largest combine in Japan during World
War II.
In 1930, Aikawa purchased controlling(?) shares in
DAT Motors, and then in 1933 it merged Tobata Casting's
automobile parts department with DAT Motors. As Tobata
Casting was a Nissan company, this was the beginning ofNissan's automobile manufacturing.

Nissan Motors founded in 1934
In 1934, Aikawa "separated the expanded automobile
parts division of Tobata Casting and incorporated it as a
new subsidiary, which he named Nissan Motor (Nissan)".
Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. The shareholders of the new
company however were not enthusiastic about the prospects
of the automobile in Japan, so Aikawa bought out all theTobata Casting shareholders (using capital from Nippon
Industries) in June, 1934. At this time Nissan Motors
effectively became owned byNippon Sangyo and Hitachi.
Nissan built trucks, airplanes, and engines for the
Japanese military. The company's main plant was moved to
China after land there was captured by Japan. The plant
made machinery for the Japanese war effort until it was
captured by American and Russian forces. From 1947 to
1948 the company was called Nissan Heavy Industries
Corp.
In early 1950s, Nissan partnered with an established
European company to gain access to up-to-date automobile
and engine designs. Nissan chose Austin of the United
Kingdom, which later became the British Motor
Corporation by its merger with Morris et al. Nissan began
buildingAustin 7s in 1930, though the legitimacy of their

license at that time is debated. After the success of
Nissan, Hino and Isuzu followed to partner
with Renault and Hillman respectively.
In 1952 Nissan Motor Company of Japan entered into
a legal agreement with Austin, for Nissan to assemble 2,000
Austins from imported partially assembled sets and sell
them in Japan under the Austin trademark. The agreement
called for Nissan to make all Austin parts locally within
three years, a goal Nissan met. Nissan produced and
marketed Austins for seven years. The agreement also gave
Nissan rights to use Austin patents, which Nissan used in
developing its own engines for its Datsun line of cars. In
1953 British-built Austins were assembled and sold, but by
1955, the Austin A50 completely built by Nissan and
featuring a slightly larger body with new 1489 cc engine
was on the market in Japan. Nissan produced 20,855
Austins from 19531959.
Nissan leveraged the Austin patents to further
develop their own modern engine designs past what the
Austin's A- and B-family designs offered. The apex of the
Austin-derived engines was the new design A series
engine in 1967. Also in 1967 Nissan introduced its new
highly advanced four cylinder overhead cam (OHC)Nissan
L engine, which while similar to Mercedes-Benz OHC
designs was a totally new engine designed by Nissan. This
engine powered the new Datsun 510, which gained Nissan
respect in the worldwide sedan market. Then, in 1969Nissan introduced the Datsun 240Z sports car which used a
six-cylinder variation of the L series engine. The 240Z was
an immediate sensation and lifted Nissan to world class
status in the automobile market
