Editor’s Letter … Once again, Branton will host a fun day at Kilham Hall Playing fields on Sunday 23rd June for 11am till 4pm.
This year the event is in aid of the Harry Matthews Bowel Transplant Trust which helps to cover some of the costs parents need to meet to be able to support their very ill children. Costs which are not covered by the NHS. The organiser, Emma Gebbie, has arranged lots of fun activities for all ages as well as many stalls of different kinds. All in all, this promises to be a fun family day out for a very good cause.
The Auckley Show, which will be held on Saturday 17th August has released tickets for it’s evening do. The theme is ‘Flower Power’ and the entertainment will be provided by ‘The Presidents’. Sixties gear is optional! Tickets are £25.00 each, for more information, contact 01302 770818.
On Sunday 26th May, Reverend Louise Tinniswood, the curate at St Oswald's and St Saviours will be ordained by the Bishop of Doncaster, The Right Revered Peter Burrows, at St Oswald's Church in Finningley, followed by a ’good bash’ at the village hall. Everyone is welcome to come along and celebrate this special event.
Another date to remember, Fathers Day is on Sunday 16th June this year! I’d best put that one in the diary now!!
The deadline for the July issue for advertising and articles is Wednesday 19th June and The Arrow will be distributed from Friday 28th June 2013!
Best Wishes Michelle Sidebottom

The Cinnamon Trust Needs You. Dog walking volunteers urgently required in Auckley.
The Cinnamon Trust is a national charity for the elderly and terminally ill and their much loved, much needed pets.
Volunteers help to keep owners and pets together either by walking a dog for a housebound owner, fostering pets when the owners need hospital care and even cleaning out a bird cage.
Unfortunately we have a shortage of volunteers who are able to offer some much needed walks for a dear little Cavalier King Charles spaniel. The Cinnamon Trust is desperate for volunteers in this area even if you can only offer an hour a week it will improve the dog’s quality of life and give the owners peace of mind.
If anyone can help please call Sally on 01736 758707 or email [email protected]. Please check out the web site for more details www.cinnamon.org.uk Registered Charity No 1134680. The Cinnamon Trust is a limited company registered in England & Wales. Company Number 07004861

Kilham Hall News Our Tuesday morning Coffee Club held its Easter Special on Tuesday March 26th and was a resounding success! Coffee, tea, biscuits and hot cross buns were FREE on this occasion and we enjoyed an Easter themed quiz with extra special prizes, our usual Bingo and our Easter monologue offering from Christine. Christine's monologues are always eagerly anticipated and she never lets us down - Christine is our home grown Pam Ayres! Sheila's Easter Raffle prizes were well worth buying tickets for but the much heralded Easter Bonnet Parade was the crowning glory of the morning! Our members turned up trumps with their fabulous creations; in fact the Royal Wedding titfers had nothing on those created by our Coffee Club members, the results of which can be seen in the adjoining photos. Councillor Yvonne Woodcock joined us for the morning and very graciously agreed to judge the Bonnet Parade. This is indeed an event to be repeated next year - and not to be missed!
Councillor Woodcock will be joining us again, hopefully on Tuesday 4th June, to give a presentation on the Doncaster town centre development. We shall aim to finish at 11.30am and we shall start, as always, with Bingo followed by Christine's monologue but may amend the remainder of our morning's programme to accommodate Councillor Woodcock's informative talk. It goes without saying that everyone is welcome to join us for tea/coffee and a chat on this particular morning and on any other!
If there is anyone out there able to offer a community activity and in need of a venue, then contact our Booking clerk, Bev, on 07856221470 and she will hopefully be able to organise a weekly slot for you. The more variety of activities on offer at Kilham Hall the better! Maybe you are a Weight Watchers or Slimming World consultant who would be interested in running a weekly Branton session in Kilham Hall, then Bev is the lady to speak to!! (Other slimming groups are welcome)!!
Finally, remember that Kilham Hall is a great venue for private parties on Saturdays and Sundays but its reputation has grown, therefore if you have a birthday or celebration coming along then contact Bev to reserve the Hall for your special date. Don't leave it 'til the last minute to book and miss out on this 'second to none' venue.
Check us out! You won't be disappointed!

Annual Parish Council Meeting Jennifer Worthington and Gillian Warrender were elected as Chair and Vice-Chair respectively at the annual parish council meeting on 1 May 2013 A full list of members of the council is given below.
Provision of Picnic Tables at Kilham Lane Recreation Ground The parish council has purchased three round picnic tables that will seat up to 12 people per table for the benefit and enjoyment of residents visiting the recreation ground and Kilham Hall Community Centre. The tables will hopefully be fitted in time for the May Bank holiday Weekend.
Parking on Pavements and Grass Verges Residents are asked not to park on pavements and grass verges in order to preserve the appearance of the village and to prevent obstruction to pedestrians. Please ring the police on ‘101’ if any vehicle is obstructing the public highway.
Meeting with the Environment Agency - Land Spreading Activity Members of the parish council attended a meeting with the Environment Agency to discuss land spreading activities following a series of complaints from residents concerning offensive odour being discharged from fields in the area. The parish council has also written to a local landowner to inform of the ongoing complaints received. At the present time the EA are unable to take any direct action and are monitoring the situation.
Provision of a Zebra Crossing on Doncaster Road It is hoped that the necessary funding will be made available following completion of the first 32 properties or when further properties have been completed at the Woodlands Walk development. The Parish Council will continue to liaise with District Councillors to seek to secure this for the benefit of residents.
Village Fun Day – Sunday 23 June 2013 The parish council hope that the Fun Day planned by local residents at Kilham Lane Recreation Ground will be enjoyable and successful.

AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER, MAY/JUNE 2013 New Village Signs Council has agreed to provide new village signs to be sited on the three approaches to the village. Decorative name plates will be attached to stone plinths to be built in weathered magnesium stone by Imn Contracts who recently constructed the new bus shelter at Main Street. Trimming of Wooded Copse Council has arranged for trees to be thinned out and overhanging branches trimmed back in the wooded copse to the side and rear of the town houses at Sandhill Rise. The trees have become very overgrown and are blocking light from residents’ properties. The work will be undertaken in Septem-ber when the birds have finished nesting. Recycling Boxes When recycling boxes are left out on the pavement ready for the collection lorry it is common to see empty plastic bottles and papers blown onto the road by strong winds. Residents who only have one box may not be aware that they can ring and ask DMBC to supply a second recycling box, and lids are also available if they were not previously been issued with these items. Telephone no: 01302 736000 Dogs Being Exercised Now that the play equipment is in situ and being used by children, we are pleased to see that dog owners are using an alternative route to the riverbank, thus avoiding taking their dogs onto the play area. This is greatly appreciated.

Tag Rugby Competition
On Wednesday 24th April, we took a team of 10 children to a Tag Rugby competition at Hayfield School. We competed against three other local primary schools. The children all demonstrated ex-cellent team work supporting and encouraging each other as well as taking it in turns to play. The children all enjoyed the competition and Miss Adamson and Mrs Barrass were very proud of the team’s accomplishments. Overall we came second in the competition and look forward to next year when we can try for the trophy once again.

Foundation visit from a snake On Friday 10th May Auckley Reception class had a very special visitor. Alfie and his mum brought in an Albino Burmese Python for his show and tell slot. She is called Betsy and was very friendly. We all had to use quiet voices as Betsy picks up on the vibrations. She is currently between eight and nine foot long and she has lived with Alfie’s family since she was only four foot long. She is now 17months old and all the children and staff got the chance to stroke Betsy and ask Alfie lots of questions about how they look after her at home. This was a lovely experience and we would all like to thank Betsy for visiting us.

Perspective
I know not everyone loves football, and I’m one of them. However, unless you took a trip to Mars recently, it can’t have escaped your notice that Alex Ferguson has retired as the manager of Manchester United. In fact, the news probably did make it to Mars, given that on the day every media outlet known to humankind was beaming the news around the planet (and beyond?) - Television, newspapers, Twitter, Face-book, Radio, pod casts, web casts, plaster casts, you name it!
This was the top story on my BBC news feed for over 24 hours. News not of the starving in the world, or of dictatorships, or wars, or battles, or injustice, or....but the news that a man of retirement age had retired from a job in the leisure industry! I know a man in Cantley who recently retired. He worked thanklessly for years, looking after people who were in great need, making a real difference to their quali-ty of life. Yet, he didn’t even make it into the Doncaster Free Press.
Perhaps we need some real perspective in the news, and maybe in life too. How do we measure success and achievement in the world. Is it by the inches of news print? Or if we trend on Twitter? Or what we have materially?
One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how people with less than they had lived. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, “How was the trip?” “It was great, Dad.” “Did you see how poor people live?” the father asked. “Oh yeah,” said the son. “So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father. The son answered: “I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a stream that has no end. We have imported lanterns and lights in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches into the garden and they have the whole horizon. “We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. “We have a housekeeper, cleaner and cook, who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food from Fortnum and Mason, but they grow theirs. “We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them.” The boy’s father was speechless. Then his son added, “Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are.”
It’s all about perspective.
