I’ve had way too much coffee today. As I write this, I’m shaking with too much caffeine-induced energy. It’s Monday, and if you’re like me, you stop by your favorite java joint to get your fix. Jennifer and thegang at the Filling Station downtown always hook it up, and they’ve got these de-lish coconut pineap-

ple muffin tops. Oh man, you must try them.Over the Jan. 10 weekend, I checked out three cool Bako events - LaughterComedy at The Empty Space,Sunday Snake Oil at Fishlips, then on Sunday I attended my first beer pong tourney back at Fishlips. Bak-ersfield was seriously buzzin’!The comedy show was packed out, and the laughs were splendid! Bravo, Bakersfield! Sunday SnakeOil’s crowd showed off some crazy dance moves, but the best part was watching the singer stomp hisboots to get the drummer to speed up on AC/DC’s “Highway To Hell.” I only laugh because I’ve been thatsinger stomping his foot before - come on, Cesareo! Haha …Sunday afternoon’s PONG661 beer pong tourney took me over the edge. The place was jumpin’, the

brew was flowin’, and these peeps were really into it! I have tons of pix and video postedat: www.bakotopia.com, so after you read this - go check ‘em out online at our Snap

galleries. Then you'll soon understand why I need coffee this morning. Thanks to all of this week’s contributors, and our fantastic advertisers for keeping

us free for you and yours. Show them some love by stopping and spendingsome dough to help the economy - and tell them Bakotopia sent you!

Peace,

B akersfield is about to get amuch needed dose of rock -melodic, riff ready and guar-

anteed to make your head bang indelight.

A rowdy bill that includes rockradio regulars - Avenged Sevenfold,Buckcherry, Papa Roach and SavingAbel - will be coming to theRabobank Convention Center 6p.m., Monday, Feb. 2.

Co-headlining with Buckcherry,Huntington Beach’s Avenged Seven-fold returns after a two-year Bakoabsence (the band’s last time per-forming locally was with Coheed &Cambria in ‘06).

This time around, the group istouring as part of the “4 Bands ForUnder 40 Bucks” tour. With a hitself-titled CD and a live DVD “Live inthe LBC,” the band is sure to remindmusic listeners that the live rockexperience isn't dead.

If you remember, Buckcherry

graced the Jerry’s Pizza basementsometime during the 2000s in thetradition of artists who’ve performedthe arena circuit. Hey, Weezer playedJerry’s too, so don’t laugh - look at‘em now!

That’s what makes them so cool -rock, no matter what your situationis. For that, Buckcherry, you get madkudos from Bakotopia.

Speaking of a flashback, what upwith Papa Roach?

I saw them for the first time whenmy band Mento Buru opened up forthem and local band, Juice, atRockin’ Rodeo before they weresigned.

Next thing you know, they were allover MTV and headlining the VANSWarped Tour (remember that, DJMikey)?

Papa Roach has come a longway since being a local bandfrom Vacaville, Calif. I think Ican remember when one ofthe guys was datingSteven Tyler’s daughter

(not Liv, they weren’t that popular)on MTV Cribs and when singer CobyDick was voted one of rock’s ugliestmen of rock on VH-1.

Man, that would suck, especiallywhen you consider you’re in thecompany of Lemmy from Motorheadand Shane McGowan of The Pogues- yikes!

If you notice, Coby and the rest ofPapa Roach have gone from lookinglike skater dudes to bonafide rockgods with cool hair, sleeve tats andlots of black - big-time makeover inthe name of all things rock.

Rounding out the bill are thepride of Corinth, Miss., Saving Abel.

Their hit singles, “18 Days” and“Addicted,” havebecome

radio staples on KRAB. If youhaven’t heard either yet, cruisearound in your ride for about 30 min-utes, one of them are sure to land inrotation.

No matter what side of music youare on, rock, emo, hip-hop or coun-try, you can’t deny the live musicexperience, and this show has it all.And if you think you aren’t prettyenough to rock out with the best of'em, just take a look at these big-timers, there is hope …

Rock ‘n' roll loves you!Enter to win free tickets to the

Q: I got pulled over and the police found a joint in my car. They gave me a ticket. What should I do?

A: Possession of less than an ounce of marijuana is a misdemeanor punishable as an infraction. You can only get a fine and not jail time. You could just take the fine and get it over with. The court or D.A. might also offer you a counseling program, which, if you complete it, would result in the dismissal of the charges. Or you could consult with a Public Defender or private attorney to see if your rights were violated during the stop, which could result in the evidence being suppressed and the case dismissed.

First of all, let me say that eventhough Bakersfield didn’t win theWorld Series of Beer Pong (WSOBP),Jan. 1-5, we definitely made our markon the Las Vegas scene.

Here’s a little play-by-day break-down:

Day 1, Jan. 1: My partner and I -Shane Mcrae of team Floatin’ Keyzand our friends, John Dodsworth andZak Corsi of team Taste My Juice allheaded to Las Vegas with family andfriends for check-in, registration andto see what teams we were upagainst for the next couple days.

Day 2, Jan. 2: This was a wholenew experience for the four of us! Wewalked into the Sunset Ballroom ofthe Flamingo Casino to see vendorbooths, TV cameras, the Jumbo Tronwith team stats and scores from over800 beer pong players like us!

Even with all the new scenery, Day

2 went pretty calm. Floatin’ Keyzended the day breaking even at threewins and three losses, while teamTaste My Juice came in close at a twowins and four losses. Both of ourteams were on an emotional roller-coaster with high hopes of winning, and fear of defeat with the agony thataccompanies it!

This was when the gloves cameoff! We all four worked together withour family and friends to distract theother teams!

Floatin’ Keyz went up against ateam from Maryland. We already

knew we were outside of the winningspots to make it to the finals, so wecame down hard on these guys!

Back and forth we battled down toone cup on each side of the table, after countless shots by both teams. Then we started to look around … wewere the only game still going on inthe arena! Then from out of the still-ness, our friends and supportersstarted chanting “661!” Soon we hadaround 200 people screaming, “661!661!”

Now with that pressure, we afraidto let anyone down, so we did what

anyone would do - we clutched ourlast shot and ruined the perfectrecord of our opponents from Mary-land!

After we finished, we headed overto watch our buds in Taste My Juice, who had a respectable 4-2 finish onDay 2! They were up against theirnext team.

They started to make work of thecups fast with both teams back-to-back sinking balls!

The rest of our crew began chip-ping away at the challenging team, who actually lashed back out at thecrowd. After they began to lash out atus, we knew their heads were nolonger in the game! We all exchangedwords I wouldn’t say in front of mymother! Fortunately, Taste My Juicecleaned up house on these guys!

All in all, the WSOBP was a greatevent where we laughed, screamed, made new friends, made people hateus, played beer pong and drank beer!To find out more about upcominglocal beer pong tourneys, contactPONG661 at: [email protected]

Some stories are more complicat-ed than just following a yellowbrick road. Such is the case with“Wicked: The Untold Story of The

Witches of Oz,” a musical based on thenovel by Gregory Maguire, currentlyonstage at The Orpheum in San Francis-co after a hugely successful run at ThePantages in Los Angeles.

The musical is thought provoking asis seen when the phrase, “Animalsshould be seen, not heard,” is present-ed on stage during one of the powerfulmoments of the musical, which drawscomplete silence from the audience.

The musical focuses on the lives ofthe two witches from the belovedclassic “The Wizard of Oz,” prior tothe arrival of the naïve young girl,Dorothy, and up to the point ofdeath of the so-called WickedWitch of the West.

The musical takes us on ajourney depicting a differentview of what really hap-pened in Oz and how agreen little girl came tobe known as “Wicked.”

We encounter clas-sic characters like theTin Man, the Scare-crow and the Lion, but get introducedto others, such asFiyero, a gallantyoung lad whocatches the eye ofboth of the protag-onists, and Nes-sarose, the womanwe have come toknow as the Wicked

Witch of the East. The performance is

filled with humor, amaz-ing costumes and great

musical numbers, suchas the upbeat “Popular”

and “One Short Day” butalso with profound songs,

such as “No Good Deed” and myfavorite, “Defying Gravity,” which talksabout going against the norm and fight-ing for the rights of all.

While the play delivers all theromance, action, color and glamour musi-cals usually do, it also addresses asocial issue that has taken center stagearound the world and even here in Bak-ersfield: how to deal with so-called sec-ond-class citizens.

In the musical, Elphaba, the greenwitch, along with the animal inhabitantsof Oz - who display all the qualities ofhumans, except they look like goats, monkeys and lions - are looked downupon by the denizens of Oz.

The animals, productive members ofsociety who work as everything from nan-nies to professors, are persecuted andfeared for being different.

Eventually, their voices are literallytaken away - sound familiar? Prop. 8 any-one?

These acts of discrimination eventual-ly lead Elphaba to take matters into herown hands, as she revolts against thebigotry of the Wizard of Oz, and therefore, becomes the target of a smear cam-paign, which has the denizens of Ozbelieving she is truly evil.

The treatment of animals in Oz as sec-ond-class citizens can’t help but remindus of how our own society finds ways todiscriminate against, silence anddemean productive members of societybecause of their differences in race, reli-gion and sexual orientation.

Elphaba’s dedication to equality even-tually takes her down a tragic path, butthe musical’s message is clear: Doingnothing to fight for what is right mightmake you the most popular person, but itleaves you as nothing more than anempty shell to be manipulated by higherpowers.

The musical takes you back to thedays when you sat in front of your screenwatching Dorothy skipping down the yel-low brick road, but also allows you to dealwith issues we tend to ignore in our soci-ety.

“Wicked” provides a colorful, excitingand insightful time for the whole family.

While the origin of a “blog” is uncertainand varies depending on the person youask, one thing is certain: Blogs havebecome mainstream and are here tostay.

But what is a blog, exactly? The word “blog” comes from the words, “WEB LOG.”

In other words, you can log your personal feelings or youcan log your favorite books, favorite bands, etc.

And if it’s on the WEB, and you’re keeping a LOG, it’sconsidered a blog.

Another way to think about it is that it’s an online diary. So how do you start?

Well, you can buy your own domain and host yourown blog, although that way is more complicated

and should probably be left for the computerexperts.

You can also find a host through:wordpress.com, yahoo.com, or

google.com.The most obvious and better

choice, of course, is choosing toblog on your friendly, local sitefor blogs, bands and socialnetworking: Bakotopia.com

Once you choose whichsite to host your blog, it’stime to pick a name for it.

This name/titleshould reflect a little bitabout your personality.

It should becatchy, but informa-tional.

For examples, you can look at afew Bakotopiansblogs and their

blog titles, such as Julie Jordan Scott’s “My Life OnStage - The Stage In My Life.” Julie uses her blog toshare her own personal journeys during the many differ-ent characters she portrays in the plays and monologueswithin the local underground theatre groups.

She also shares her poetry from time to time, and it’susually a mirror into her soul and whatever she’s goingthrough at the moment.

Then, there is Annie L White. Annie’s blog title is “My Ideas Are Better Than Yours,

Always.” She shares her political views and challengesyours. As you guessed from the title, Annie is alwaysright. Period. Well, I mean, in her own little world, any-ways!

Annie is feisty and nonapologetic, and her title reflectsthat.

Bakotopian blogger, Lost Hills is a musician/activist. His blog title is “Lost Hills Road,” and he blogs about

anything from his political stances, a news article hefeels is noteworthy, and about music that he feels is wor-thy of sharing with the world, or, err, Bakersfield.

My own blog title “Kick Off Your Shoes and StayAwhile” reflects what I hope my blog to be.

It’s my very own personal journal where I share mythoughts, feelings and funny stories about my life, the-atre reviews, music reviews or anything I find noteworthy.

I want you to feel comfortable and at home while read-ing my blog. I want you to feel like I could be your neigh-bor or your cousin.

I could be anybody. I could be your best friend. My titlereflects that.

So now that you have a few examples of blog titles, let’s talk about different blog topics you could writeabout.

As I mentioned before, there are political bloggers, personal bloggers, music review bloggers, but what elsecan you blog about?

I’ll give you a few different types of blogs, and you canget an idea of what you want your own blog to reflect.

Now remember, these are just ideas. And you don’thave to stick to just ONE type of blog. I know I don’t!

1) Reviews: You canreview books, bands, restaurants, styles of clothing, etc. The list is endless.

2) Debates: You can choose a topic, give your own opin-ion, then challenge others to change your stance, or atleast get their take on the matter.

3) Lists: You can blog about “Top 10 Reasons to Say NoTo Drugs” or “Top 10 Movies of 2008” or “Top FiveBooks You MUST Read.” Bakotopian blogger by thename of Rubiconreader does this a lot. He’s an employ-ee at Russo’s bookstore, so he reads a lot and shareshis favorite book titles with you.

4) Informational: A perfect example of an informationblogger is N.L. Belardes aka “thenovelist” at: www.bako-topia.com. His blog, Paperback Writer, started off as amusic and book review blog but has slowly evolved intomuch more than that.

5) Personal: This type of blog pretty much covers every-thing above, but it’s also about you. What happened toyou today? What do you have to say about this or that?Rant about your neighbors. Brag about the new CD youbought. Discuss the latest movie you watched. Tell usabout your wonderful boyfriend or your funny kid, or yourstinky purse. Oh, there are more ideas!

Y ou’ve heard the song, but doyou remember the story? Ona cold stormy night, Feb. 3,

1959, three of rock music’s mostpopular, up-and-coming stars took aplane ride, never to return.

Frustrated with tour bus condi-tions after a gig the night before atSurf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa -rock hitmaker Buddy Holly, alongwith rising teen idol Ritchie Valens, and radio personality turned musicstar - J. P. “The Big Bopper” Richard-son, decide to board a small chartercraft headed to their next gig in Hec-tor Airport in Fargo, North Dakotaonce their show was over that night.

On their way to their destination, the plane crashed into a cornfield,

killing all four passengers, includingpilot Roger Peterson.

Immortalized in movies, “TheBuddy Holly Story” (1978), withactors Gary Busey as Holly; as wellas “La Bamba” (1987), with LouDiamond Phillips as Valens andEsai Morales as his brother Bob,many music fans will forever associ-ate the incident with Don McLeans1971 jukebox staple, “AmericanPie,” also covered by Madonna in2000.

While there is a lot of info avail-able on the Web regarding the crashitself - everything from Buddy Holly’sautopsy report to the official acci-dent report, there are a lot of twistof fate stories sprinkled throughout- including future country legendWaylon Jennings losing his seat toRichardson; Ritchie Valens winning

a coin toss to fly; and Dion DiMuccifrom Dion & The Belmonts choosingnot to fly due to the price of theflight ($36), among other trivia bits.

The influence of these talents onthe history of popular music willalways be felt and recognized. Gui-tarist Carlos Santana always citesRitchie Valens as one of the rea-sons he picked up the guitar as ayoung Latino. Beatle Paul McCart-ney has paid tribute to Buddy Hollynumerous times, even producingone of the best tribute projectsavailable on Holly, entitled, “TheReal Buddy Holly.”

And who can forget, dancing to“La Bamba,” saying “HelllllooooBabyyyy?” like the Big Bopper, orscreaming out “Rittchhhhieeee!”after you hear a Ritchie Valenssong?

So don’t forget to raise a drink, throw on “Peggy Sue,” “Donna” orone of your favorite tracks by theselegends on Feb. 3, and toast to theartists who gave us these immortalmusical classics.
