‘Twas a few days before Halloween. Vermont-based, best-selling author
Kane Gilmour and illustrator Matthew Sylvester delighted costumed students
and staff with demonstrations and hands-on activities. Art was created.
Comic books were read. Cafeteria staff prepared Batman Burgers, Catwoman
Carrots and Kryptonite Soup.
“LaraCon is a celebration to raise awareness of, and appreciation for,
comics and related popular art forms,” said Jenn LeBlanc, who coordinated the
event. “It’s a way to celebrate the historic ongoing contribution of comics to
art and culture.”
“This should happen every year!!” one of our students said.

Balancing stress during the holidays
The holidays can be a wonderful
time of gift-giving and celebrations
with family and friends. They can also
cause some anxiety and stress. “Will I
have enough money to buy the
presents I want to give?” “Are the
roads going to be too bad to travel?”
“Who’s going to be (or not be) at the
family or friends party?”
Our work at Laraway provides great
joy and satisfaction as we see our kids
discovering new things about
themselves while strengthening
connections with family and the
community. It can also bring about its
fair share of stress.
We recently took several pauses
across our agency to reflect on the
stressors we face and the things we
can do to reduce our stress levels. We
were reminded how helpful it can be
to have someone check in and just
ask how you are doing. We noticed
how encouraging it is to have
someone notice the extra effort you
put into a project. We observed how
refreshing it can be to take a quick
walk outside.
Maybe you are experiencing some
of those pre-holiday stressors. If so, I
encourage you to pause and reflect on
how you can find balance while
celebrating the joys in your life.
Maybe you’ll even help others do the
same. Happy holidays!

Youth in Foster Care: Skills for Life
Can you balance a checkbook or check the oil on
a car? Youth in Substitute Care, Laraway’s therapeutic
foster care program, are learning these skills and more.
“We help young people prepare for independence,”
said Morgain Raleigh, the Laraway staffer who coordinates our Life Skills
curriculum. Morgain partners with colleagues from Vocational Rehabilitation,
the Lamoille Restorative Center and other agencies to deliver
relevant content in a hands-on, youth-friendly way.
Topics include cooking and nutrition, job skills, substance
abuse and prevention, healthy relationships, diversity, and basic
first aid. Participants also engage in mock interviews with
administrative staff. These teens are preparing to return home,
continue their educations and/or enter the workforce...skillfully!

Notes from Nick’s Playbook: A Strategy for Success
Page 3 December 2015
Nick Nadeau knows his self-worth. The
Johnson State College senior in on track. He
attends college full-time and maintains good
grades while working multiple jobs. He’s set to
earn his Bachelor’s Degree this month. He
plans to go on directly to graduate school.
Nick is self-sufficient. He rents his own
apartment, owns two vehicles and a boat, and
has even started saving for retirement. He has
a dynamite smile and exudes
positive energy.
Nick is a mentor at
Laraway. He works directly
with youth in our therapeutic
foster care program. Nick was
once a foster child. He’s
walked in the sandals,
sneakers, flip flops and boots
of the young people we serve.
Nick was removed from his birth family and
placed in foster care at age two. Eventually, he
was adopted, but the family ended up abusing
and neglecting him. Nick found solace in the
positive relationships he forged with adults
and peers at school. Interestingly, Nick stood
up for a friend who was being bullied at
school. When Nick disclosed to his guidance
counselor the difficulties at home, that friend’s
parents stood up for him---inviting him to
move in with them.
Catching up with Nick can be tricky as he
maintains a very full schedule. That said, he
slowed down in time to offer bits of advice
from his own journey that we’re calling, “Notes
from Nick’s Playbook.”
When in Foster Care…Know your self-worth.
Know that you are more than what people tell
you, if it’s negative. Don’t let yourself be
labeled. Recognize that you have the power to
make your own decisions. Recognize that your
life experience may be different from others;
once you embrace that, it will lead you to new
places. Defy the stereotypes.
When leaving Foster Care…Have
a work ethic. Be thoughtful
about the people you choose to
hang out with. Find people who
will support you and have a
positive influence on you. Foster
your resilience and make a plan
for your life…day by day, month
by month, year by year.
Lessons Learned on the Road to Adulthood…
Schoolwork is important; don’t neglect it.
Avoid the self-pity trap. Follow the rules.
Recognize you can form positive relationships
with people; this may be hard at first. If you
give yourself a chance, something great can
happen!
Nick’s work as a mentor allows him to
spend time, one-on-one, with youth engaged
in recreational and skill-building activities.
When an interaction becomes challenging, as
they sometimes do, Nick is able to tap into his
internal “Notebook” drawing upon his
hard-earned, hard-won wisdom.
“A lot of people told me I wouldn’t go to college.”
