What is Visual Design

According to the Glossary of Desktop Publishing Terms, “Visual Design refers to the application of proper methods to produce a product that is both artistic and functional. This technique is very important in order to communicate the message effectively.”

“Design is a key element of any successful product. Good designers and their designs put technology into the hands of the user, making the product’s focus comprehensible and tangible through design.” (Dong and Agogino, 2001, p.314)

Colour

Colour refers to, “Specific hues and has 3 properties, Chroma, Intensity and Value.” (Elements and Principles of Design, n.d)  “Colours are all around us. They are used in our everyday lives to alert us against danger, to give us signals and directions, to lead us in recognizing certain product characteristics and more.” (Painting Brand with Colours, 2008)

Line

“A line represents a ‘path’ between two points. A line can be straight, curved, vertical, horizontal, diagonal, or zigzag.” (Berden, 2004, p.1) “Line can be considered in two ways. The linear marks made with a pen or brush or the edge created when two shapes meet.” (Lovett, n.d)

Texture

“Texture is the surface quality of a shape - rough, smooth, soft hard glossy etc. Texture can be physical (tactile) or visual.” (Lovett, n.d) “The most exciting aspect of texture is that, when used carefully, it adds to the meaning and depth of an artwork. (Using Texture in Painting, n.d)
