Game #4 Chirps TEAM

YEAR TWO UNDER COACH NEU• This is year two for Ball State under head coach Mike Neu. He is one of 21 FBS head coaches who is coaching at his alma mater. The only change on the coaching staff is the addition of David Elson as defensive coordinator. Elson served as the head coach at Western Kentucky from 2003-09 and spent the 2016 season as Western Illinois’ defensive coordinator.

SUCCESS IN HOME OPENERS• Thanks to a 51-31 win against UAB on Sept. 9, Ball State has now won eight consecutive home openers at Scheumann Stadium. The Cardinals have won those games by an average of 16.6 points.

YOUTH SHINES IN SEASON OPENER• Sixteen true freshmen or redshirt freshmen saw action in the Sept. 2 season opener at Illinois. S Bryce Cosby, TE Nolan Givan and OL Kaleb Slaven were in the starting lineup. Givan notched the team’s first touchdown of the year while Cosby registered the team’s first interception.

TWO ALL-MAC PLAYERS RETURN• Of the four Ball State players who earned All-MAC accolades in 2016, two return to lead the Cardinals this season – junior RB James Gilbert and senior DE Anthony Winbush. Gilbert was a first team selection while Winbush was honored on the third team.

HIGH PRAISE FOR INCOMING FRESHMAN CLASS• Ball State has 38 true freshmen listed on its opening week roster. The incoming class was rated the second highest in the MAC by 247Sports. Assistant coach Chevis Jack-son was named 247Sports’ MAC Recruiter of the Year as he helped the Cardinals sign eight recruits from the state of Georgia.

NOT MUCH YELLOW ON THE FIELD• In 2016, Ball State led the MAC and ranked fifth nationally in both fewest penalty yards per game (35.5) and fewest penalties per game (4.0).

LOOKING TO GO BOWLING• Ball State aims to return to the bowl scene this fall. The Cardinals went to the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg follow-ing the 2012 season and the GoDaddy Bowl after the 2013 campaign. However, Ball State fell short of bowl eligibility each of the last three seasons.

2017 TEAM CAPTAINS• The 2017 team captains were named earlier this summer. They are senior WR Jordan Hogue, senior OL Vinnie Palazeti, sophomore LB Jacob White and senior DL Kevin Willis.

RED BIRD RIVALRY• Beginning this fall, Ball State and Miami will once again play every season as the schools have been granted rivalry status by the Mid-American Conference. The teams have agreed to play for the ‘Red Bird Ri-valry’ trophy. The mascots of both schools are red birds. Ball State has been known as the Cardinals since 1927. Miami adopted the RedHawks moniker in 1997. The rivalry between the schools dates to 1931.

BALL STATE ‘FAMILY’ CONNECTIONS• Junior QB Riley Neal and sophomore WR Riley Miller both have family ties to Ball State. Neal’s father (Jesse) and uncle (Jay) both played football for the Cardinals. Meanwhile, Miller’s father (Greg) was a part of the Ball State basketball team that made a run to the 1990 NCAA Tournament ‘Sweet 16’.

BALL STATE IN THE NFL• Following NFL preseason cuts, WR Willie Snead IV (New Orleans Saints) was the only former Cardinal to make an active roster. Other former Ball State players who were attempting to make an NFL roster were WR KeVonn Mabon (Tennessee Titans), OL Kitt O’Brien (Cleveland Browns) and S Aaron Taylor (Green Bay Packers).

STAT CORNER

4Ball State’s defense has made four fourth down stops in the first three games. Last year, the Cardinals stopped 13 of 17 fourth down at-tempts by the opposition.

2017 INDIVIDUAL HONORSJames Gilbert, Jr., RB, #34• Maxwell Award Watch List• Doak Walker Award Watch List

Vinnie Palazeti, Sr., OL, #75• Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

Anthony Winbush, Sr., DL, #98• MAC West Defensive Player of the Week (Sept. 4)

LB David Rueth recorded his first collegiate interception and freshman DE Christian Albright produced his first collegiate sack versus TTU.

THAT’S A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION• Making his first collegiate start on Sept. 2 at Illinois, LB Jacob White tallied his first career sack on the opening play of the game. The sophomore finished with a team-high nine tackles against the Illini.

ONE GAME, ONE INTERCEPTION• S Bryce Cosby was the only true fresh-man in the starting lineup in the season opener at Illinois. He came through with a highlight reel one-handed interception in the fourth quarter against the Illini.

FRESH FACES AT LINEBACKER• Ball State was one of four FBS programs that featured zero career linebacker starts on its roster heading into the 2017 season. The other schools were Kansas State, Old Dominion and UNLV. The three starters from last year – Zack Ryan, Aaron Taylor and Sean Wiggins – combined for 96 starts in their Ball State careers. Wiggins was an All-MAC third team selection last fall.

GET TO THE QUARTERBACK• The Cardinals racked up 31 sacks in 2016, which ranked second in the confer-ence. Senior DE Anthony Winbush led the team and ranked third in the MAC with 8.5 sacks. He put an exclamation point on his 2016 season with a then career-high 2.5 sacks in the finale at Miami.

DEFENSE

GETTING TO THE BACKFIELD• Thirteen defensive players have been involved in a tackle for loss in the first three games of the season. The team’s 28 tackles for loss leads the MAC and ranks second nationally. DE Anthony Winbush paces the nation with 9.5 tackles for loss.

4TH DOWN MAGIC CONTINUES• Through three games, Ball State has stopped four of six fourth down conversion attempts by the opposition. Last year, the Cardinals stopped 13 of 17 fourth down at-tempts. Ball State led the MAC and ranked third nationally in fourth down conver-sion defense (23.5 percent) in 2016. Only Alabama (17.4) and Appalachian State (21.7) had better percentages.

LOTS OF FIRSTS AGAINST TTU• Junior CB Josh Miller tallied his first interception of the season against Tennes-see Tech on Sept. 16. Meanwhile, freshman

MILLER MAKES IMMEDIATE IMPACT• Sophomore WR Riley Miller was award-ed a scholarship during the latter stages of preseason camp. He proved his worth right away in the opener at Illinois as he led all players in receptions (eight) and receiving yards (86).

SAME PATH FROM H.S. TO COLLEGE• The quarterback-wide receiver tandem of Riley Neal and Riley Miller is one of just 11 in the nation that also played high school football together. The Rileys played locally at Yorktown High School. Other schools that have similar tandems are: Penn State, Southern Miss, TCU, UAB, UMass, USC, Utah, UTEP, Virginia and Wake Forest.

LOTS OF EXPERIENCE AT QB AND RB …• The Cardinals return both quarterbacks

OFFENSE (cont.) who took snaps last year (junior Riley Neal and senior Jack Milas) as well as five of their six top rushers. RB James Gilbert, Neal and RB Darian Green combined for 2,183 rushing yards in 2016.

… THE OPPOSITE IS TRUE AT WR• Ball State lost more than 70 percent of its production at wide receiver from last year’s stats, which includes WR KeVonn Mabon who participated in the NFL preseason with the Tennessee Titans. Mabon left Ball State as the program’s leader in career re-ceptions (244). Senior WR Corey Lacanaria is the team’s top returning pass catcher. He tallied 33 receptions for 341 yards a year ago.

RUN CARDINALS, RUN!• Ball State averaged 220 yards rushing per game in 2016, good enough for the third best average in the MAC. It was also the most rushing yards per game for the Cardi-nals since the 1978 season (238.6 ypg).

PALAZETI ON WUERFFEL TROPHY WATCH LIST• Senior OL Vinnie Palazeti was selected as a candidate for the 2017 Wuerffel Trophy. Palazeti, one of this year’s team captains, has made 20 career starts on the offensive line. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy Win-ner, Danny Wuerffel, the Wuerffel Trophy is known as “College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service”.

SNYDER STEPS RIGHT IN AT PUNTER• True freshman P Nathan Snyder has been a steady contributor in his first year on the squad. He booted a season-best 52-yard punt last week against Tennessee Tech that was fair caught.

DUNNER’S SPLASH PLAY AGAINST UAB• RB Malik Dunner returned a third quarter kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown against UAB on Sept. 9. That play gave the Cardinals a 38-24 lead. It marked the first Ball State kickoff return for a score since former WR KeVonn Mabon scampered 89 yards to paydirt on Oct. 24, 2015 against Central Michigan.

MOORE BLOCKS PUNT VS. UAB• CB David Moore blocked a fourth quarter punt in the win over UAB on Sept. 9. It was Ball State’s first punt blocked since Sept. 10, 2016 at Indiana.

MR. CONSISTENT• Junior K Morgan Hagee made 78.9 percent (15-of-19) of his field goal attempts a year ago which ranked fourth in the league (minimum 15 attempts). Hagee made eight of his final nine attempts to conclude the 2016 season. His career long field goal is 47 yards. Hagee was also one of just three MAC kickers to make every PAT attempt in 2016.

NEW FACES IN THE PUNTING GAME• For the first time since 2014, the Cardi-nals will have new faces fill their punter and long snapper roles. Kyle Schmidt served as the punter for the previous four years and averaged 41.0 yards per punt, which ranks third in the Ball State record book. Nick Traub held down the long snap-ping duties from 2014-16.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Game #4 Chirps

YOUNG UNIT WITH NEW DC• New defensive coordinator David Elson will be working with a lot of fresh faces on that side of the ball this year. Only three returnees entered the season with more than 10 career starts – DT Kevin Willis (24), CB Marc Walton (13) and DE Anthony Winbush (11). Walton ranked fourth in the league in passes defended (14) last year.

DIPLOMA IN HAND• Senior DE Reggie McGee is the lone Car-dinal entering this season who has already earned his collegiate degree. He earned his diploma in general studies in May.

Last Time vs. WKU (Oct. 11, 2008)

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The nationally ranked Ball State Cardinals (7-0) remained un-defeated after posting a 24-7 win at Western Kentucky (2-5) Saturday night.

Ball State’s defense continued playing strong with a near shutout over the Hilltop-pers, one week after posting a 31-0 shutout at Toledo. Western Kentucky did not score until 58 seconds were left in the game.

The Cardinals took the early lead after junior quarterback Nate Davis threw a 5-yard pass to freshman wide receiver Briggs Orsbon with 13:50 to play in the first quarter. The touchdown marked the 23rd game in the last 24 which Davis had thrown a touchdown pass.

MiQuale Lewis, a junior H-Back for the Cardinals, jump started the offense in the sec-ond half with a 1-yard touchdown run with 6:14 to play in the third stanza.

Ball State’s Trey Lewis made a big play late in the fourth quarter when he intercepted the 10th pass of his career. The momentum continued to go the Cardinals’ way and Louis Johnson capped off the Ball State scoring with a 20-yard touchdown reception from Davis. With his 14-of-22 passing performance, Davis has moved into second in Ball State history in career pass attempts.

Last Week vs. Tennessee Tech (Sept. 16, 2017)

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State football team will certainly find things it hopes to clean up from Saturday’s performance against Tennes-see Tech.

But at the end of the day, the Cardinals (2-1) posted another home victory. Riley Neal threw three first-half touchdown passes, the Ball State defense refused to break, and the Cardinals led from start to finish in a 28-13 Family Weekend victory.

Ball State sophomore Malik Dunner made a momentum-changing play for the second straight week to keep the Cardinals comfort-ably in front. After a TTU field goal cut the lead to 21-13 with 2:57 to play in the third quarter, Dunner took a handoff and broke through for a 66-yard touchdown run. It proved to be the final scoring play of the day.

While the Cardinals’ offense struggled to score points in the second half, the defense stood strong. Ball State limited Tennessee Tech (0-3) to only six total points in three red zone trips after intermission.

The Cardinals overcame three turnovers, but they also picked off two passes of their own on interceptions from David Rueth and Josh Miller. Ball State racked up 10 tackles for loss, including two sacks courtesy of the na-tion’s sack leader, Anthony Winbush.

Head Coach Mike Neu2nd season at Ball State | 8th season as a head coach (including arena league)

16th season as a football coachHometown: Indianapolis, Ind.Alma Mater: Ball State ’94Family: wife Charmin … three children – Graycen, Carson and Chase

@BSUCoachNeu

One of Ball State University’s very own, Mike Neu, is now in his second season as the Cardinals head coach. Neu played col-legiate football at Ball State where he was named 1993 Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

“We are delighted to have Mike as our head football coach,” Ball State Director of Athletics Mark Sandy said. “His football expertise, leadership traits and passion for Ball State are qualities that our student-athletes and fans will embrace.”

Neu has more than 15 years of coaching experience with stops in the National Foot-ball League (NFL), Division I FBS football and the arena leagues. Before returning to Ball State, Neu served two seasons as the quarterbacks coach for the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. In 2014 under Neu’s guid-ance, quarterback Drew Brees was selected to his franchise-record eighth Pro Bowl as a Saint. Brees led the league in completions (456), tied for first in passing yardage (4,952), ranked second in completion percentage (69.2) and tied for fifth in touchdown passes (33). In 2015, Brees once again led the NFL in passing yardage (4,870) while ranking second in completion percentage (68.3) and completions (428).

Neu, a native of Indianapolis, Indiana, started 38-of-41 games at quarterback in his four seasons at Ball State (1990-93). He was honored with the MAC’s Vern Smith Award as the league’s most valuable player and the MAC Offensive Player of the Year award as a senior. That year, Neu and the Cardinals went 8-3-1 overall and 7-0-1 in league action to capture the MAC cham-pionship. In one of his greatest games as a collegiate quarterback, Neu threw for a Ball State record 469 yards and completed 28-of-40 passes against Toledo in 1993 to help the Cardinals rally from a 30-3 deficit and record the largest comeback in Ball State history, a 31-30 Homecoming victory.

Neu played professionally in the Cana-dian Football League and Arena Football League (AFL) from 1995-97 before begin-ning his coaching career in 1998 with the AFL’s Nashville Kats. In 2000, Neu was named head coach for the first time as he took over the Arena Football 2’s (AF2) Au-gusta Stallions. He led that organization to a conference title in 2000 with a 14-4 record

and was named the AF2 Coach of the Year.In 2001 and 2002, Neu worked with

the AFL’s Carolina Cobras. He served as the offensive coordinator in 2001 and was promoted to head coach in 2002. During his stint as head coach, Neu led the team to the quarterfinals of the AFL playoffs, including the team’s first-ever playoff win.

Neu then spent four years as head coach of the AFL’s New Orleans VooDoo. There, he compiled a 33-31 record and earned 2004 AFL Coach of the Year honors. During his first season at the helm, Neu led the team to a franchise-best 11-5 record, a divi-sion title and a playoff berth.

From 2008-12, Neu worked on the New Orleans Saints’ player personnel staff. He then spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons with Tulane as the quarterbacks coach. In 2013, Neu helped guide Tulane to a 7-6 overall record and its first postseason appearance in 11 years – the 2013 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.

Neu received his bachelor’s degree in sport administration from Ball State in 1994 and served as a graduate assistant coach for the Cardinals during the 1994 season. He was inducted into the Ball State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.

Neu and his wife, Charmin, have a daughter, Graycen (16), and two sons, Car-son (15) and Chase (7).
