  • Up-to-date technology based onproven design

    Multi-purpose concept featuring standard modules

Customised sizing and layout to specific requirements

120 mill sizes with capacities ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 kW

Ball mills type UMS, TMS and TUMS

  • Versatile system based on standard modulesThe Unidan mill, type UMS, is designed for grinding of clinker, gypsum and dry ormoist additives to any type of cement andfor separate dry grinding of similar materialswith moderate moisture content.

The mill types TMS and TUMS are fullyand semi air-swept mills respectively, designed for dry grinding of raw materialsfor cement manufacture.

All mill types may operate in either open or closed circuit and with or without pre-grinder, to achieve maximum overallgrinding efficiency and high flexibility interms of product quality.

All mill types have large through-flowareas, which allows the mill to operate withlarge volumes of venting air and a low pressure drop across the mill. Hence theenergy consumption of the mill ventilationfan is low.

The mills consist of standard modules andare easily adapted to specific requirementsin terms of plant layout, mill drive, liningtypes and end product specifications.

Cement grindingIn two-compartment finish-grinding UMSmills, the first, coarse grinding compartmentis provided with a step lining that is suitablefor large grinding media and ensures optimum lifting of the mill charge. The shelllining in the second compartment or in aone-compartment finish-grinding mill is acorrugated lining designed to obtain maximum power absorption and grindingefficiency. For special applications a classify-ing shell lining may be adopted for finegrinding in the UMS mill.

The ball charge in the UMS mill consistsof grinding media in various sizes to ensureoptimum grinding efficiency and easy maintenance. The size distribution of thegrinding media in the coarse grinding compartment is designed to just crush thecoarsest particles in the mill feed materialand to ensure adequate fineness of thematerial passing the diaphragm. For finegrinding, the charge consists of small balls, which ensures the best possible grindingefficiency without obstructing the materialflow through the ball charge.

  • In two-compartment UMS mills, theSTANEX diaphragm between the grindingcompartments effectively screens the material passing from the coarse to the finegrinding compartment. The diaphragm isfitted with adjustable lifters to ensure anadequate level of material in the precedingcompartment. The STANEX diaphragm issuitable for all applications, even for millsoperating with high material flow rates andmoist mill feed.

An internal water cooling system may beinstalled in one or both grinding compart-ments to optimise mill performance and toensure an appropriate material temperatureinside the mill and at the mill dischargeend. The material temperature in thediaphragm, monitored by the Induthermequipment, and the temperature of the milldischarge material control the injection ofwater into the first and second compart-ments, respectively.

If the materials to be ground containmore water than can be dried off in thefirst compartment, the UMS mill will be fitted with a bolted-on drying compartmentwith lifters. A seal between the stationaryinlet and the drying compartment minimisesingress of false air.

Mill performance is monitored by contin-uous measurements of the material and airtemperatures as well as the pressure at themill exit. The venting of the mill is adjustedby a damper in the inlet to the mill fan. Thelevel of material in the mill is monitored byan electronic device (a Folaphone) thatmeasures the noise emission from the mill. For UMS mills operating in closed circuit, the circulation load is monitored by weigh-ing the flow of reject material from the separator.

  • ter of the cone has a flange for bolting-onthe coupling of the central drive. The millshell has four manholes, two for each grind-ing compartment.

Slide-shoe bearings. Each slide ring runs ina bearing with two self-aligning slide shoes. One of the slide shoes at the drive end ofthe mill is fixed in axial direction; the othersare supported by rollers on heavy bedplatesto allow longitudinal thermal expansion andcontraction of the mill body.

The slide shoes are water-cooled, andeach bearing is provided with a panelenclosed lubrication unit including oil tank, motorised low and high pressure oil pumpsas well as an oil conditioning circuit withmotorised pump for heating/cooling and filtration of the oil.

Each bearing is enclosed in a dustproofand oiltight casing with inspection doors. The bearings and the lubrication unitsinclude the necessary safety equipment formonitoring the bearing temperature, the oilflow and the oil pressure, connected to alocal control panel with safety interlockingfor both bearings.

Inlet. Mills of the UMS type have a station-ary steel plate inlet funnel that leads theventing air into the mill through a protrud-ing central cone bolted to the web of theslide ring. The funnel is equipped with athrottle valve and a pressure monitor toadjust the pressure at the inlet end, thuspreventing dust emission from the inlet. The feed chute, which is lined with bolted-on wear plates, slopes down through the airfunnel to the mill inlet opening.

Mill types TUMS and TMS have a station-ary inlet, which leads the material and thedrying air into the drying chamber through

    Proven mill design

Raw material grindingIn raw material grinding mills (types TMSand TUMS) the first section of the mill bodyis a built-in drying compartment fitted withlifters. Hot drying air enters through an insulated inlet with feed chute. The driedmaterial is conveyed from the drying compartment to the grinding compartmentby built-in lifters and by the flow of air. Thegrinding compartment has a classifying lin-ing and a ball charge designed for grindingin one compartment only.

The TMS mill type is fully airswept, in other words the drying air sweeps all theground material out of the mill and lifts it tothe separator, whereas the TUMS mill type issemi air-swept, which means that theground material is carried to the separatorby an elevator except the finest portionwhich is conveyed by the mill exit air.

Proven mill design with innovative featuresThe mill types UMS, TMS and TUMS areshell-supported ball mills resting on slide-shoe bearings with two slide-shoes at eachend of the mill. The UMS and the TUMSmills may be supplied with either side driveor central drive, whereas the TMS type isalways with a side drive.

Mill body. The mill body consists of an all-welded mill shell and a T-sectional welded-up slide ring at either end, the cylindricalpart of which is welded onto the ends ofthe shell. Side-driven mills have a reinforcedshell section with a flange for bolting-on thegirth gear. Centrally driven mills have anoutlet cone with large openings for materialand venting air. The large diameter of thiscone is welded onto the cylindrical part ofthe outlet slide ring, while the small diame-

Outlet. Mill types UMS and TUMS have astationary steel plate outlet casing that isinsulated with mineral wool and providedwith seals between the casing and the rotat-ing outlet cone.

The outlet end of the fully air-swept TMSmill has a bolted-on cylinder including lining, lifters and flights that reaches into the sta-tionary outlet funnel. Here, material precipi-tated from the air is led back into the mill. The outlet funnel is lined with wear platesand provided with a flange connection tothe riser duct. An air seal is fitted betweenthe stationary funnel and the rotating parts.

Mill linings and internal fittings. In theUMS mill, the inlet cone and the inner sideof the inlet slide ring web exposed to wearare protected by bolted-on, wear-resistantlining plates.

The first compartment shell lining in UMSmill is a highly wear-resistant step type lining. A rubber backing prevents damage to the mill shell and lowers the noise emis-sion from the mill during operation.

The shell lining in the second compart-ment or in one-compartment UMS mills is ofthe semi-boltless corrugated or classifyingtypes. With both lining types, boltless liningbars are fitted between bolted-on liningrings, and a dovetail assembly between theparts keeps the boltless bars in place.

The STANEX diaphragm used for two-compartment UMS mills is of a rigid designand is supported on a ring of cast steel segments that are bolted to the mill shell. The structural parts consist of a rigid mildsteel supporting plate with spacers, ontowhich is bolted a mild steel front plate with large openings. The diaphragm is fittedwith radial, adjustable lifters between thesupporting plate and the front plate andwith a central screen plate with support.Facing the first compartment the STANEX

diaphragm is provided with segmented wearresistant grates bolted onto the front platewith throughgoing bolts. The openings inthe front plate allow screened material topass the diaphragm. The downstream sideof the diaphragm is provided with highlywear resistant segmented lining plates.

At the discharge end of the UMS (and theTUMS) mills, the wear resistant outlet grateis fitted on a supporting structure which isbolted onto the web of the slide ring. Alsothe discharge end is with radial, adjustablelifters behind the outlet grate.

The TMS and TUMS mills have a highlywear resistant bolted-on lining, comprising astep lining for the first 1.5 metres of thegrinding compartment, followed by a classi-fying lining.

Water cooling. A separate unit comprisingwater tank, pump(s) and valves for internalwater cooling of the material in one or inboth compartments of the UMS mill is usually provided. The flow of cooling waterinto the outlet end of the mill is controlledby the temperature of the mill dischargematerial. The water cooling into the inletend is controlled from a thermocouple in the diaphragm, connected to a wireless transmission system (Indutherm). Specialnozzles ensure optimum water spray withoutpressurised air.

The nozzle and internal piping for water injection into the second compart-ment of the UMS millwith central driverotate with the mill. The connectionbetween this internal piping and the stationaryexternal water supply system is established via a specially designed stuffing box.
