The world may turn red, pink and white come Febru-ary, but environmentalists urge the public not to forget about going green this time of year. Valentine’s Day can be made more earth-friend-ly with a few extra tips and some heightened awareness with regard to the planet.• Send a card made of re-cycled materials. Save paper and trees when purchasing cards by choosing those made of recycled materi-als. Or make your own cards from materials found around the home. A handmade card may appear more heartfelt anyway.• Give eco-friendly choco-lates. Purchase chocolates that were made under sus-tainable conditions and from companies that pro-vide farmers and other workers with good working conditions. The Rainforest Alliance, for example, lists companies that are certifi ed as environmentally respon-sible.• Research jewelry produc-tion. Gold mining can be destructive and cause en-vironmental blight. Aim to purchase from retailers that limit mining waste and envi-ronmental damage. Another
idea is to recycle old gold jewelry into new items. Jew-elry stores can melt down precious metals and turn them into entirely new and beautiful pieces.• Give thoughtful gifts. If a loved one is involved with or supports a particular char-ity or environmental action group, consider giving a donation to that organiza-
tion in lieu of a traditional Valentine’s Day gift.
TURN VALENTINE’S DAY GREEN
Valentine’s Day evokes strong emotions in so many people. On the offi cial day of all things love, many eagerly anticipate the chance to spend time with their sweet-hearts.Couples who already have hearts in their eyes and are enamored with all things Valentine’s Day may want to tie the knot on this special holiday, and few can argue when a couple decides to become husband and wife on this day devoted to love and aff ection. Valentine’s Day is a popular day to tie the knot, as more than two million people choose February 14 to walk down the aisle in the United States alone. Valentine’s Day is an easy
day to remember, meaning it will be hard for husbands and wives to forget their wedding anniversaries.
Another benefi t to getting married on Valentine’s Day is the ambiance may already be taken care of by various establishments in the com-munity. Reception halls may be embellished with fl ow-ers, balloons and other dé-cor, while businesses may already be displaying hearts in their windows and twin-kling pink, red and white lights for Valentine’s-focused customers.
Couples who may not know which colors to choose for their wedding parties and table linens can just go with the colors and themes of Val-entine’s Day if they decide to
tie the knot on February 14. Chocolate brown, red, lav-ender, and pink are primary hues for the season, and any combination will comple-ment the festivities and cer-emony — whether they’re the color of the napkins or making up the bouquet.
Valentine’s Day treats and trinkets make for great wed-ding favors. Guests can take home individual boxes of chocolates or crystal candle votives, while buff et dessert tables can be embellished with vases fi lled with choco-late kisses or candied hearts.
Couples looking for a special day to tie the knot need not look any further than Valen-tine’s Day, a day devoted to couples and the aff ection they share for each other.

Building a home gym inside your home can motivate you to workout more often and adopt a healthier life-style. Fitness experts advise that homeowners building a home gym in their homes emphasize lighting in the room that will soon transform into a gym. A well-lit room, whether the light is com-ing from several windows, a door or recessed lighting in the ceiling, can help men and
women maintain their energy levels throughout their work-outs, whereas darker rooms can lead to feelings of slug-gishness, which can compro-mise workout routines. In ad-dition, when building a home gym, keep the room free of clutter and unnecessary items that will only be a distractions during workouts. Potentially valuable additions to home gyms include plants, which can increase oxygen levels
in the room, and at least one mirror, which can help men and women focus on their movements and ensure they are performing exercises cor-rectly. Homeowners build-ing a home gym also should consider nding room for a wall-mounted television to make time spent on ellipti-cal machines or treadmills less monotonous. If possible, homeowners should connect a streaming device to the
television so they can catch up on their favorite shows or watch movies as they burn calories. It’s also good to nd
space for a mini refrigerator in the gym, which should be kept well stocked with water. This can prevent runs to the
kitchen in the middle of a
workout.

EXPLORE THE ALTERNATIVES TO GRANITE COUNTERTOPSGranite has long been a popular countertop mate-rial for homeowners look-ing to combine functional-ity with aesthetic appeal in their kitchens. But granite is no small investment, and homeowners looking to re-
furbish their kitchens should know there are a multitude of countertop materials available to those working on a budget or those who simply want to give their kitchens a di erent look.
• Solid wood: Wood counter-tops create a warm, homey interior. Butcher block coun-ters are less expensive than granite and do not neces-sarily need to be ordered from a speciality retailer. But wood can stain and dent and can even burn when hot kitchenware is placed atop it. Regular application of oil can help homeowners main-tain the appearance of their wood counters for years to come.
• Marble: Marble tends to be less expensive than granite without sacri cing aesthetic appeal. However, marble is softer and more porous than granite, so it can stain and be etched. Diligence in wiping away spills, routine sealing and a gentle touch is necessary for those who choose marble countertops.
• Soapstone: This is a natu-ral stone composed mainly of mineral talc that gives
the stone its smooth feel. Soapstone ranges from black to gray but can some-times have a green shade to it. Other materials in the stone can produce veining. Although softer than gran-ite, soapstone is still high-density and will hold up well. It’s impervious to stains and bacteria, and exposure to chemicals will not dam-age it.
• Quartz: Quartz is a manu-factured product made of stone aggregate and poly-mers compressed under high pressure. It has the look of natural stone but re-quires less work to maintain. Quartz has consistent colors and patterns and is a nonpo-rous material, so it will not need routine sealing and resealing.
• Glass: Glass countertops are back-painted, so home-owners can order just about any color they want. Glass
will be tempered, so it is safe and heat-resistant. Glass can scratch, though, so it is not as impervious as other ma-terials.
• Concrete: Concrete is an-other material that can be colored to match homeown-ers’ whims. Concrete is rela-tively inexpensive compared to other countertop materi-als, but it can crack or chip.
While granite is a popu-lar countertop material, homeowners who want something new have many additional options at their disposal.

PRAYER TO ST. JUDEMost holy apostle, St. Jude, faith-ful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honors and invokes you universally, as the patron of hopeless cases, of things almost despaired of. Pray for me, I am so help less and alone. make use I implore you, of that particular privilege given to you, to bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the con-solation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly (here make your request) and that I may praise God with you and all the elect forever. I promise, O blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, to al-ways honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to grate-fully encourage devotion to you. Amen. “Thank you again for the impossible. AC & DC
TO THE PARISHIONERS of Immaculate Conception Church Glenville: As I’ve been running into parishion-ers over the past two years, I would just like the truth to be known about my sudden ab-sence from the parish. In January 2013, I was called into a meeting. I was asked to resign as Director of Music, when I refused, I was told by your pastor Jerry Gingrass, Maryann Haskel, and Dan Sleeva that I would be termi-nated. I did not quit or move on, I was fired after 20 years of service, without notice or explanation. I truly enjoyed being a part of your lives and serving the community of the Immaculate Conception Church in Glenville. BERNADETTE PETERSEN

Motorists routinely check their tires for proper infl a-tion, top off engine fl uid lev-els and maintain oil change schedules. But some drivers do not understand the im-portance of keeping engine air fi lters clean.
Engine air fi lters are a rela-tively inexpensive vehicle part, but they perform a very important job. For every gal-lon of gas a car burns, it uses the equivalent of 12,000 gal-lons of air, and that air must be fi ltered to help keep an engine clean.
Air fi lters catch all of the dust, grime, insects, sap, leaves, and any other debris that may get sucked up past the air intake of the vehicle’s grill and into the engine it-self. Without the air fi lter, those contaminants may compromise the engine, causing corrosion and abra-sion. If the air fi lter in the en-gine becomes too dirty and is not changed regularly, the engine is starved of air.
Clean air fi lters allow just the right ratio of air to fuel to en-able the engine to function properly. Engines need ad-equate air for the combus-tion process to take place. Without the proper combus-tion levels, vehicles cannot perform properly or effi -ciently and the engine may burn more gas or get fewer miles to the gallon. A dirty fi lter also can rob an engine of power. Drivers may notice sluggish acceleration.
Air fi lters also can get so dirty that the engine stalls completely. But such a prob-lem only develops after con-
siderable neglect.
Air fi lters may not need to be replaced at each and every oil change service call. Many technicians advise replacing the fi lter every 8,000 miles. However, drivers who live in particularly dry and dusty
regions may need to replace fi lters more frequently.
Mechanics can often detect when an air fi lter needs to be replaced. If he or she notices the air fi lter is particularly dirty, then it’s probably time to replace it. Replacing the
fi lter is a relatively inexpen-sive repair for the amount of performance and peace of mind a new fi lter provides.
