100 YEARS OF FOOTBALL

The Balmain Australian Rules Club has had a long and distinguished career. Being a foundation Club it had to overcome early prejudices and lack of support to establish itself as an important cog in the Australian Football development in New South Wales.

The club was formed in 1903 and for 7 years played in the first division of Sydney football, making the finals for the first four years with a best result of runner up in l 904. The Reserve Grade team was premiers in that year. In l 909 the Club decided to field only one team in the Sydney competition and for the years 1910, 1911 & 1912 the Club played in the Reserve grade competition only and participated in 3 grand finals for one premiership.

In 1913 we combined with a team called Northern Districts from Ryde and once again played in first division under the name of Central w~stern. In 1915 the name changed back to Balmain and for 2 years we were one of the leading clubs.

In 1916 we lost one game throughout the year and then lost the grand final to Paddington, whose star player on the day was an ex Balmain player, Wally messenger - the brother of Dally Messenger who is arguably one of the best ever Rugby League players that Australia has ever produced. (Wally also is credited with playing a Rugby League match for Australia).

The club disbanded in 1918 due to the effects of the First World War. Many SFL players enlisted - some of course never to return. A. Steptoe was the first Balmain player killed during the war. He came to us from the Maitland area and was killed in action at Lone Pine during the Gallipoli campaign.

From 1919 until l 925 we again played in the SFL and fielded a reserve grade team as well. During these 7 years we managed to win only 16 games - an average of just over 2 games per year. In 1926 the SFL restructured under a "District Scheme" and the area of Balmain was merged into other surrounding Club's districts, as a consequence of the SFL's actions the Club was absorbed into these Clubs.

The club reformed in 194 7 and again played in the SFL from 1948 until 1987. During this period we made the Finals series twice. Once in 1969 where we were beaten by Newtown in the first semi final and again inl 983 under Barry Breen when we were runners up to Easts in a hard fought game. Reserve grade and Third grade both made the grand final during this time but they both lost by less than one goal.

At the end of the 1987 season the SFL decided to place Balmain in the SF A Competition where we participated for the next 6 years. We played in the Grand Final every year during our stay in the SFA, winning 3 premierships. In season 1992 we went through undefeated and in 1993 we lost just the 2 games - the second semi final and the one that mattered - the Grand Final!

Because of our dominance in the SF A, we were invited back into the SFL in 1994 and the Club embarked on a 3 year rebuilding program .1995 saw just one win and 1996 six wins before 1997 gave us our first ever Senior Premiership in the First Division SFL. 1998 saw us take back-to-back senior premierships with our reserve grade being runners up.

1999 saw us in our 3rd Grand Final in a row and in season 2000 we again made the finals. Sadly we narrowly missed the finals in both 2001 and 2002, but look out for the Tigers in 2003, our Centenary Year!

PRESIDENTS REPORT

Season 2002 was, in many instances, one of under achievement, both on and off the field. The beginning was full of promise with Troy Luff accepting the position as coach of the Balmain Australian Football Club. Troy's commitment and professionalism from pre-season training to the last game against Pennant Hills was exceptional and I thank Troy for his efforts. It was a fitting reward that Troy won the club's Best & Fairest and also the League's Phelan Medal.

Thanks also must go to Fred Hummell and Mark Reid for coaching the Reserves and Under- l 8's respectively. Both grades showed early promise, but had mid-season slumps, leaving them out of the finals.

The Seniors also showed excellent early form, being tipped by some experts as 'The team to beat'. But after the round 9 game, against Pennant Hills at Drummoyne Oval when we suffered our second defeat, the side lost its momentum and never really got back to its full potential. Thanks to all players who represented Balmain AFC for their efforts and support on and off the field during the season.

The medical team, led by James Sutherland again completed their tasks in a most professional manner and the Club is indebited to them all. The Club is very fortunate to have such dedicated support staff to assist the players at training and on match days. Special thanks to Annette and Adrian Ferris.

Thanks to our General Manager, Bill Walford, for all his efforts under, at times, very difficult circumstances. The Committee struggled throughout the year due to the lack of personnel and every effort must be made to increase the number of committee members so that a much more pro-active and effective committee can make season 2003 a memorable one.

The Club could not survive without the support of our sponsors. We thank them for their involvement this year and look forward to their continued support for season 2003.

We were fortunate to have the regular band of willing workers helping out at training and match days, but as in past years it is always left to the willing few. What we need is a genuine effort from past players, supporters and everyone connected to the Balmain Australian Football Club to put their hand up and offer to help in some way towards making this club the most professionally run and successful in the competition in 2003, our centenary year.

Peter Mackenzie Interim President.

GENERAL MANAGERS REPORT •,• { 1.1 "'' :c'

In general the 1001h season of2002 has been one of consolidation which will take the club into

its' second century. There have been some.highlights that should be recognised: • Steve Price accepting the number one member's card. • Troy Luff coming on board as Chib Coach and his excellent efforts in winning the club

best and fairest and capping that off with his great effort in taking out the 2002 Phelan Medal for the leagues' best and f~irest player.

• Michael Ghobrials' representation in the Sydney and NSW rep teams, culminating in NSW winning the Australian title

• Sponsorship taking on a new strucfure which will pave the way for the successful future of the club, it is pleasing to report that Mayfair Quality Foods and Caltex Australia are in the process of joining us as joint Platinum Sponsors, raising the bar greatly in this area. This arrangement will be for the next four years with an option of a fifth and is possibly the largest single sponsorship ever entered into with an SFL Club, with conservative estimates of $50,000 a year being touted as more than applicable.

It has been a very difficult year for all really, starting with unknown debts and virtually no sponsors. We now know where we are at financially and steps have been put in place to·ensure our continued viability, this could not have happened without the support of the Drummoyne Sports Club through its Board of Directors.

All coaches, support staff and players are to be thanked for their efforts in at times very trying conditions. The club is looking at building up a much larger and more efficient off field group for 2003, our Centenary Year.

Whilst short in numbers our volunteers have just been great, I sincerely thank you all for your efforts· this year. Hopefully additional people will be on board to lighten the load for us all in the near future.

Finally, thank you to the committee; Peter Mackenzie, John Taylor, Mitzi Fujiwara, Ron Dixon Bruce Arndell and John Coles. I have really appreciated the _support and work you did for the club this year, often under great duress.

Obviously we didn't reach the heights we wanted this year but all grades performed credita}?ly and a number of young players have started to come into the senior grades, performing well and giving great hope for 2003 and beyond. Congratulations to all trophy winners, well deserved. In particular Troy Luff has had a great year, not only winning our best and.fairest but joining Ray Moore, Bob MacDonald, Max Hodgson, Frank Gleeson and Mark Mackenzie in taking out the coveted Phelan Medal as best and fairest in the Sydney Football League.

Season 2003 will be huge; there are a number of big events in the planning stages to take this opportunity all the way; after all it's n_ot every day you get the chance for a Centenary Celebration!

SENIOR COACH'S REPORT Well 2002 was definitely a year in which we underachieved. We should have made the finals and gone on from there. However it certainly was a year that also saw many positives. We built up a solid bond amongst each other and saw the player group form one strong unit. Pre-season started with about a dozen players turning up to show their intentions back in early December. The numbers grew slowly during January and by February we had over 70 players who had turned up to try their luck with the Tigers of2002. Training had been reasonably solid, not what I would call over the top. It was about building up a good base fitness and at the same time getting the balls out early to sharpen up the skills and try and implement a style of play that was obviously a bit different to what the guys were used to. We had many different venues:- Taplin Park, Jubilee Oval, SCG training ground and Maroubra Beach. As we increased training to 3 nights a week, not just at my request but also of the senior players, everyone responded well. We picked up some good interstate players who brought a lot of experience to the club, Warren Cruse, who played 199 games for Lilydale in the E.D.F.L. in Melbourne, Joel Cooney from the Q.F.L, Josh May brought his S.A.N.F.L. experience with him and Michael Sier who played V.F.L. and also was on the rookie lists of Hawthorn and Essendon. It was unfortunate to lose Michael to an injury halfway through the season, added to what was already a talented line-up at the Balmain Football Club. Michael Carey was again announced captain with his new deputy being Mark Mackenzie, rewarded for his hard work over the past couple of seasons. Everything was shaping up to what looked like a great year for Balmain, the players had put in the hard work, got themselves fit and were raring to play. I also must thank the efforts of the support staff that put in a lot of time and commitment to be there a lot earlier and more often to what they are used to, and the biggest thanks has to go to John Taylor who worked tirelessly to make sure everything ran smoothly.

Now it was time to put all our training into practice. What I saw from our first intra-club match impressed me greatly, the passion and commitment these guys showed, assured me of the great things that lay ahead. We started the Villi's Cup full of confidence as on paper we had a side that was going to be tough to beat. Unfortunately things didn't go to plan. Although we lost all 3 games, the signs were there. I played all those that deserved a game for their commitment to training and desire to play. It was an experimental time for me to see how everyone plays and to what position they are suited. I must say there was a slight feeling of worry but I knew that once our new style of play kicked in, the wins would start flowing.

After the Villi's Cup I had a fair idea who played best where. Mick Sier, who came to the club as a forward, was moved into the backline with outstanding results, Carey and Cooney proved their worth as onballers constantly getting the ball, Ben Howell showed what a good leader and goal kicker he was and Mick Ghobrial never let a thing past him. The best thing I got from the pre-season comp was to see the depth of players we had, and as we saw this year we are not a side that relies on too few. All that have played have shown their worth. We finished off the pre-season with a practice match against Pennant Hills. We won the game comfortably and this gave us the launching pad for our Round 1 clash with Easts.

With the season now only weeks away and everyone itching for it to start, I thought a fun social night was in order. An 80s party was organised to give the players a final opportunity to get to know each other and bond so we could build and maintain a unity that would hold us together through any battle. A great night had by all with DJ Luff spinning the tunes from what was the greatest era of music. Everyone dressed for the occasion with Warren Cruse doing a great Brian Mannix impression and a few dusting off their Mullets. However I think Mick Ghobrial was a decade too late but he did look good.

Round 1 finally and we were full of confidence, it had been a good pre-season and now the guys who were rewarded with a game in the first match couldn't wait to start. The game was very scrappy but we certainly looked the better side. A lapse in concentration in the last quarter allowed Easts to kick 6 goals and steal the game, a bit of a blow to what mine and the rest of the teams expectations were. But if we look at how we played that day compared to the weeks to follow, you would have thought it was a

Page 12

different side who had stolen our jumpers for the day. It really hurt everyone so someone had to pay and that was going to be St George. A very tough and physical game saw the boys have their first win and start the ball rolling. Winning becomes addictive, so in the weeks to follow, every player became more and more addicted to that feeling, so much so that we didn't allow anything to get in our way of continuing our habit. The 3rd match of the year was a special one as the club promoted it as a testimonial game for me. A huge thanks goes to all who was involved, especially Bill Walford, in organising this as I know it was a big effort. Special thanks to the players for making sure it was a memorable day by having a win against a side that didn't let up all day. It was great to see some of my old teammates and Swans people, including Rodney Eade, who made the effort to come and help celebrate the day. There were also a few T.V. people and other sporting identities that made the trip to Drumrnoyne, including Brett Lee, so I thank all those involved. I also need to thank John Meldrum and a Black Roger Moten for organising the eventful Karaoke night that followed

The following month we had some tough games against North Shore and Wests. I threw the challenge out to everyone and they all responded by doing what they know best, winning. It was such a huge disappointment to lose to the bottom side at home and I think the best thing we got out of it was the lesson that we learned. You can't just tum up and expect to win no matter whom you play. The loss hurt everyone. The second half of the year was very disappointing, as we didn't beat any of the top sides. We found ourselves in winning positions against Easts/UNSW, Wests and North Shore but failed when it really counted. These losses saw us fall from top of the ladder to eventually finish fifth. We proved to ourselves and to everyone that when we stick to our game plan we become invincible. We played some of our best footy against the bottom sides with some huge wins. Unfortunately when it counted we lost our way and had a sad ending to a year that promised so much. We have built up a very good unit within the team and club and this must continue if we wish to have success. We have shown how well we can play against the top sides when it counted earlier in the year but this has to be maintained. We still have a lot of hard work ahead of us.

There are so many people I need to thank. Firstly John Coles, for making the initial contact in regard to me coaching; the way he went about it made my decision so much easier. Then the follow up work done by both Duncan McCrae and especially Bill Walford to seal the deal. As mentioned earlier the tireless work done by John Taylor makes training run so much smoother; and I had a lot of help earlier in the year from Mitzi Fujiwara. The medical staff head by James Sutherland and Jason Bendall did a great job with help from Anna Dingwall and Chelsea Lane plus our ever reliable masseuse, Wes McPherson who was there every week. Annette and Adrian Ferris are so dedicated to their work and do a fantastic job week in and week out. Thanks go out to my bench, which changed a lot during the year. There were Greg Schlein and Fred Hummel; earlier Andrew Kyprianou; later John Meldrum with a bit of help from some of the players at various times; our main runner in Dave Dawson and also all those who donned the lovely lime green uniform at some point during the year; my statisticians led by Skinny and John Coles did a great job as I certain! y added a few things to score on which they had never had to do before; Andrew Mills for getting us organised before a game; and the great support I have had from our on field leaders in Michael Carey and Mark Mackenzie. A huge thanks has to go out to every player who played this year in all grades for making me feel so welcome and for the effort that everyone has put in. Last of all a thank you to every person that has assisted in any way during the year as there have been many.

Despite missing the finals the season has been enjoyable for me and the club and I am very proud of each player that has pulled on the Balmain Guernsey. Now we all have to make sure that this great feeling around the place continues. There are a lot more great times ahead for the Balmain Football Club but at the end of the day there is only one prize that makes all the effort and commitment worthwhile, a PREMIERSHIP!! So to all involved, lets make this happen.

RESERVES COACH'S REPORT

Looking back with Freddy Hummel.

Training was hard, numbers were plenty, footy fever was back in the air. Working off the excess kilos was going to be fun (not). After the first few training sessions the squad of men were already feeling fitter, enjoying the smell of leather in their hands.

The skills were rusty but the spirit was building as the season was getting ready to kick off. New faces, old faces, who's in, who's out and who's going to help, it's on again.

The season was a roller coaster with some good wins, some narrow losses and some games that we would like to forget. Lack of numbers through injuries and elevation to the seniors reflected in these results but the loyal 10-12 players who turned up to training on cold winters nights and persevered are to be congratulated, a true reflection of their characters. To you few, from me, thank you!

The year showed a lot of the 18's playing up a grade to help the club after playing their game. To you young men, thank you and good luck with your senior football aspirations.

To my players, their partners and families, I thank you. It has been a year of doing something we like to do, playing football.

To all the helpers around the club, Jonno, Yoda and Darren Carle (to mention a few), thank you. It takes the support of people like you to help build a successful season and more importantly a successful club. My joys during this season have come through seeing the continuous improvement of players new to football, their determination to learn and bettering themselves for the team. So Hoffy, Wilko and Trotty, keep up the good work and well done.

Finally, to all the people I've known and met over the years through the Balmain Football Club, thank you for the memories and thanks for the football. Good luck in 2003 and remember to keep up the "yabba".

Go Tige's!!

Fred Hummel

COACH'S REPORT FOR U18'S SEASON 2002 I First of all I would like to thank all the U 18's players for their efforts this year, especially to ! the captains, Tadd Walford and Matty Richardson for their great team leadership. i Also a big thank you to our team manager Warwick Richardson for doing a great job all year keeping the boys organised. Not to mention all the people that made things happen, encouraged and supported the boys all year like Bill and Janne Walford, John Taylor, Bob 1

Kirby, Bruce Arndell, John and Mary Coles, Duncan McCrea and our assistant coach Funky! Miller for his encouragement and support on game days. Also a big thanks to all the boys' 1

parents who came to game days.

Well, from a coach's point of view, we may not have made the finals this year, but 2002 has I been one of the most successful seasons for Balmain U18's to date. The team won a total of 1

seven games, six more than previous seasons and defeated clubs like Pennant Hills and the I Eagles for the first time in the club's history. Sadly, many times the score on the scoreboard· did not fully reflect the boys' determination and team work in their efforts to win. ,1

I I'd also like to mention the great effort from the boys from the Central Coast for travelling all the way for training and games. They' showed real dedication.

Many of the U l 8's will be too old to play this grade next season. However they will be prepared for senior levels as many of the U l 8's backed up week in, week out to play reserve I grade with some of the boys getting the opportunity to play 1st grade. Well done boys! !

Great effort! Great effort by all!! Be proud of yourselves, as I have been very proud to have coached the Ul8's this year.

Good luck to all of you in future seasons to come.

Mark MacKenzie gained selection in the All Australian Countl)j Team for Season 2000

Michael Sier played for Sydney against Riverina 2002 but was unavailable for selection for New South Wales in the Australian Country football carnival. I

Michael Ghobrial played for Sydney against Riverina in 2002 and then New South Wales in the Australian Country football carnival at Riverland on 26-28 July12002. New South Wales were undefeated and the first State outside Victoria to win the championships in its current format.

JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT REPORT Based on what we saw this season, the future of Junior Australian Football in the Balmain district looks promising. However without the enthusiasm and tireless efforts of a number of dedicated parents, it might well not be the case. Now is the time for this club to play an increased role in fostering junior development. Management, players and supporters must do what they can to nurture our junior clubs and their players and ensure the progression of graduates of junior football, to senior football, in the black and yellow colours, for years to come. Some highlights were: I LITTLE LEAGUE GAMES & CLINICS 1 .

I During the season a handful oflittle league games were organised between local teams at half time,1

I

in first grade games, at Drummoyne Oval. Most teams were comprised oflocal junior players, but teams from Gosford Tigers, Pittwater Tigers, All Hall owes School, Abbotsford and St Marks School, Drummoyne also competed. Our appreciation goes to all junior officials and coaches involved in the little league. Thanks to the Richmond Tigers Sydney Supporters Club, Ben Holland and Marc Dragicevic, were in attendance at our Round 15 clash with Wests to conduct a clinic for young players and Auskickers. With more notice to the junior clubs and local schools, such clinics will be of tremendous value to the local junior clubs and ultimately to the Balmain AFC.

SYDNEY CITY ASSOCIATION

I

The Drummoyne and Glebe Clubs have been members of the Sydney City Association since it was formed in 2000. Currently it is the most productive nursery of Auskickers in Sydney and the I standard in its U 10 and U 12 competitions continues to rise. Congratulations to all players and thosb hard working officials and supportive parents from all clubs concerned. More established I associations have grown a bit apathetic. I

SYDNEY CITY JUNIOR UMPIRES A significant contribution to the success of the Association thus far has been made by its junior umpires. David Jacobs a former SFL umpire has fostered his charges for three seasons and the results of his dedication and commitment are evident in the performance of the dozen or so umpires that he coaches and co-ordinates each season. The efforts of these umpires were recognised at the annual junior umpires dinner at DSC, at seasons end, when the following awards were made: Golden Whistle - Ben Slee (former East player): Most Improved Umpire - Justin Fox (Glebe):

Page 32

Encouragement Award- Tom Fisher (Glebe): First Game Award - Tom Fisher/Luke Jolly: Level I Certificates - Tom Fisher, Michael Parker (Glebe), Max Friend (Glebe), Chris Murr (West) Congratulations to David, the junior umpires and all concerned. Balmain AFC should seriously consider some form of financial sponsorship for this successful junior umpiring body.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS My personal thanks go to John Taylor, the football operations manager of this club and various other titles. How John finds time to do all the things he does for footballers of all ages intrigues me, but also inspires me. At junior level we select Darren Lewtas and wife Francis, as the football personalities of the year. Their support for junior football throughout this district, in particular, our little league games was fantastic. Darren is.already organising, off his own bat, an inter school sports day competition for 6 schools within the Balmain area next season. A failure to support such an initiative financially, could prove costly to this club in the future. The pick of the junior players for season 2002 is Damien Bowles (Drummoyne) who graduates to senior football at the end of next season but already plays for Sydney Redbacks 016 squad, who were premiers in Ul8's. This season he gained U 15 State representation and was an emergency player for NSW U l 6's. He is also a very competent umpire. Well done Damo.

The two top junior teams, under the Balmain umbrella this season, were the Riverview U l 4s and the Glebe Black Ul4s. Both lost only one competition game on their way to minor premierships in the Northside and St George competitions respectively. Both were first into their grand finals and were victorious on the day. Riverview defeated Pennant Hills in a very close contest 7.3.45 to 4. 7 .31, having being down by two points at the final break. Congratulations to the boys and coaches Fiona Conway and Terry Ahem. Glebe were down by three goals at quarter time to Western Suburbs, but then kept them goal-less, to score a comprehensively victory 9.6.60 to 3.2.20. These same Glebe boys won only a single game last year in the same age division. A great effort by them and coaches Denis White (BAFC life member) and Dave Lucas .

.......... . ~ ~ -

There were plenty of other great efforts by our juriior teams and individual players as outlined in the junior club reports that follow. Congratulations and best of luck to all who have been involved in junior football this year.

Bob Kirby and John Taylor

GLEBE GREYHOUNDS 2002 marked one of the most successful in the 22-year history of the Glebe Junior Australian Football Club. Sadly it also saw the death of a real Glebe stalwart, club registrar Sue Parker. Sue for many years contributed hundreds of hours to the club in every aspect of our operations. She is deeply missed by us all.

Glebe has the smallest geographic area of any junior club in Sydney, yet is now the second largest south of the harbour. The Club has experienced strong growth in numbers over the past few years. For instance in 2002, 140 players registered with the Greyhounds - up from 115 in 2001 and 90 in 2000. Our Auskick program is the fifth largest in Sydney. This year the club entered two teams in the St George Association Under 14s competition and fielded teams in the Sydney City Association's Auskick, Under 10s and Under 12's.

On the field our older Under 14 team, coached by Dave Lucas and former Balmain on-baller Dennis White finished as Minor Premiers and Premiers. Our younger Under 14's side, coached by Tony Fisher, while not experiencing that level of success will be a formidable combination in next year's competition. Our Under 12s reached the semi-finals while the Under 10s were grand finalists.

Three Glebe players; Max Friend, Jack Wright and Tom Lindsay played in the Southside Under 14's representative side while a number of others represented St George. Another 12 players represented the Sydney City Association in Under 10s, 1 ls, 12s and 13s.

The club celebrated two important milestones this year. Thomas Lindsay passed the clubs goal kicking record of 170 - held by Adam Coles since 1993. Michael Parker became only the eighth (and youngest) Greyhound to play 200 games for Glebe. These youngsters will hopefully join other 200 game players currently with the senior club namely John, Peter and Matthew Feain, James Kirby and Cameron Wilson. (Adam Coles and Karol Foyle also played but have retired) In fact the Glebe Club has for many years proven to be an important source of players for Balmain. Current higher grade players include Glen Fowler, Matthew Coles, Eden Bennell and James Hoff.

Glebe is very keen to see the relationship between our two clubs strengthened. This year Balmain players attended a number ofGlebe training sessions and our younger teams played some half-time games at Drummoyne Oval. We are grateful for the support of Bob Kirby in this regard; the first time in many years that Balmain has made any significant contribution to our club. Next year the Club will field teams in all age groups, the first time it has done so since 1999. Many of the players in our senior squad are destined to play football at a high level. By working together Balmain and Glebe can help ensure a good number of these players help form the backbone of a competitive SFL side for many years to come.

DRUMMOYNE POWER

Our season for 2002 was one of consolidation. Hopefully we will maintain our numbers for season 2003 and maybe we may see some representation in the finals.

Auskick had a great season with Darren Lewtas assisted by Paul Kerrison and his own wife Francis. We went from 12-15 children in 2001to25 in 2002. The skill level ofthekids greatly improved throughout the season from the training and game days. They were also fortunate to have games at the SCG. Stadium Australia and Balmain half time games. These games are invaluable to the family members, as they remain memories for the future. Congratulations to Darren and his families.

Ul Os were coached by two competent men in Steve Chard and Kevin Hall. These guys ventured into their coaching careers with reluctance. Even though they have had plenty of experience playing footy, they were shaking at the knees at this daunting task. Both gentlemen took to the job like ducks to water. They were a young team but committed themselves as a solid group to play some great games. They won 5 games and gained a wealth of experience under their two well credentialled coaches. With this season under their belts, this group will be a force to be reckoned with in 2003.

U12s were again coached by Kenton Bowden. Kenton has had the difficult task over the past two season, losing a number of players to private schools and others simply dropping off. When trying to gel a team together it makes the task very difficult as most of the kids had not played before, and need to learn the skills. The numbers at the start were encouraging but we needed a couple of Western Suburbs players for the first few games. Then the team picked up a few new players and by playing up some of the UlOs they became more confident, and consolidated a team that finished only one game outside the finals. Well done to the coach and players.

Ul 5s were coached by Peter (unflappable) Adams who loves a challenge as proven a few years ago when he coached our U13s. Unfortunately we started the season with only a dozen U15 players which is very tough on any coach's temperament. Showing his class this guy was still prepared to continue with the support of his bandito~. The guys dragged along a few averaged players that helped us to field a team and maintain a six team competition. The problem was this is against the rules but the other teams generally gave us the go ahead. It was our decision that, if we won, we would not take the points as this would be unfair. The team played some fantastic games due to their great attitude of"lets have a go". This is an unusual method of playing a season of AFL, but the club had the benefit of not losing its oldest team and still promoting AFL at this age group. We probably played about 25 to 30 players for the season, which should help both Drummoyne and Balmain football clubs in the future. Congratulations guys. Hopefully you remember season 2002 as one of great character because besides the fact you could play a season of footy for enjoyment only, your parents have to be congratulated for the spirit with which you played.

To all Power players and families, thank you for the continued support,.for making Drummoyne Power a good club now and for contributing to the future of AFL in the Sydney suburbs. Congratulations to our 2002 representative players and trophy winners.

Regards

Mick Bowles PRESIDENT

ST IGNATIUS COLLEGE

Australian Rules football was the first football code played at St Ignatius' College, Riverview, with the first school team being established in 1881. However the game has not been played continuously at the school, and season 2002 is only the sixth year since AFL has been reintroduced. 2002 has been one of our most successful seasons so far.

This year Riverview fielded teams in the under 13s, 14s and 15s Northside Junior AFL; a team in the Father Brennan Cup; and teams in each of the three Independent Schools Gala Days held throughout the season.

The Ul3's were a highly enthusiastic bunch of players, mainly made up of first timers. The team began copping some resounding defeats. However by the final part of the season, the boys were playing well as a team, scoring goals, and looking like winners. Most importantly, they maintained an incredible team spirit, developed their skills and had fun.

The U 14' s had a range of players from the very skilled and experienced to several first timers. The team had a brilliant season, being defeated only once in eighteen matches. The Under 14s were the minor premiers and they went on to win a very exciting and memorable Grand Final, having been down by two points at three quarter time.

The Ul S's season started badly with three straight losses. However the team then hit their stride and from Round 4, only lost two of their remaining twelve matches. They became the giant killers of the competition, beating the eventual premiers by 62 points. Unfortunately they did not play well in the semi finals and did not progress further.

At the three Independent Schools Gala Days, Riverview fielded teams in the four age categories. At least one Riverview team was successful in winning finals on each Gala Day. The Father Brennan Cup is an open age competition for Sydney's Independent Schools. Riverview won for the first time last year, and easily retained the Cup this year.

Riverview AFL was honoured this year with the award of Best Club by the Northside Junior AFL Association. This award is voted for by the umpires and is awarded on the basis of Conduct, Sportsmanship and Presentation.

Our individual players also did well this year, eight of them being chosen for representative teams, and three boys gaining best and fairest awards from the Northside Junior AFL Association.

Riverview AFL is looking to build on the success of 2002 next year when it hopes to field five teams in the Northside Junior competition. An Under 18 side planned for 2002 did not eventuate but it is hoped that there will be sufficient players for a competitive Under 18 team by 2004.
