even bedding surfaces so pieces fitsmoothly against walls and ceilings. AllBalmer VI products are CFC- andHCFC-free, so they are ozone friendly.

Balmer VI cornices provide sculpturedelegance to soften the angles wherewalls meet ceilings. A living room, hall,bedroom, kitchen or dining room istransformed from an austere, angularbox into a serene, more unified room inwhich to relax or entertain. Cornicesare made of fully primed polyurethane,have a density comparable to whitepine, and accept any latex or oil paintfinish. Decorative painting techniquesyield striking results.

A cornice can enrich any room in yourhome. As a general guideline, any51/2 inch cornice is suitable for use inareas with 9 foot ceilings or in large,principal rooms. A 4 inch cornice is agood choice for use in smaller rooms orin areas with 8 foot ceilings.

We recommend the use of DesignerMiter Blocks at all 90 degree cornersand between lengths of cornice. Theuse of blocks eliminates the need to cutmiters or match the patterns at jointsand halves installation time.

With moulding lengths, apply caulk, in acontinuous 1/4" (6 mm) bead, along boththe wall and ceiling bedding surfaces ofthe cornice. If the piece abuts otherlengths of moulding or blocks that arealready fixed in place, apply an epoxy orpolyurethane (PL) adhesive to the endsof the moulding.

Spring the moulding into place. Usetrim head screws or a power finishnailer to fasten it in place. Any remain-ing voids can be caulked. Excess caulkcan be removed using a wet cloth.

To complete your installation, fill thescrew or nail holes using a clean, wetputty knife and a sandable non-shrinkinglatex filler (spackling). For the bestresults, all filled holes should be primedbefore you paint the cornice.

Spring pieces into place.

Fasten with finishingnails or trim screws.

Remove excess caulk andblend using a wet cloth.

Use a sandable, paintablenon-shrinking filler.

Installing CorniceBalmer VI cornice mouldings can eitherbe installed using designer miter blocksor using mitered corners. Using theblocks eliminates the need to cutmiters, match patterns, and correctmoulding alignment at each joint. Amitered installation generally takesabout twice as long as a miterlessinstallation. Advice for cutting cornicemiters is provided on the Internet.

Before applying adhesive to the pieces,it is best to cut and fit the mouldings forthe entire room. Start by decidingwhere to place designer blocks. Adddivider blocks to your layout so that thedistance between any two blocks is lessthan a full, 8 foot length of moulding.

Complete the installation of all designermiter blocks first. This will allow you tocut moulding lengths slightly long andspring each length into place snuglyagainst the blocks. Polyurethane (PL)adhesive should be applied in acontinuous 1/4" (6 mm) bead to eachblock surface which meets the ceiling orwalls. Fasten the blocks in place withtwo or more trim head drywall screws,placed where they will not be visible.

For the best results, moulding lengthsshould be fixed in place with anadhesive caulk as well as finishing nailsor screws into studs and joists. We rec-ommend using a premium paintable,super latex or siliconized, latex adhesivecaulk. It will fill any seams left betweenthe moulding and the wall or ceiling dueto their unevenness and cleans up withwater. One 101/2 fl oz (300 ml) tubeof latex caulk is enough to install about25 feet (7.6 m) of cornice.

Regular Capitals Coped Capitals

Coped capitals are used with pilastersand a frieze to create (part of) a doorsurround. Coped capitals are sold inpairs. They are notched to fit overthe left and right ends of any of thefive Adornador friezes.

A regular capital can be used with apilaster to create a divider along awall between functional areas of yourhome. Regular capitals are sold indi-vidually. They are available in threestyles in both 6 inch and 8 inch sizes.Regular capitals are also used in anydoor surround design which does notinclude a frieze.

Installing AdornadorAdornador components can be used toenhance interior or exterior doorwaysand passageways. When installing aninterior Adornador treatment, use apremium paintable super latex orsiliconized latex adhesive caulk as anadhesive and trim head drywall screwsto secure components in place. For anexterior installation, use a quality con-struction adhesive and screws intoanchors suited for use in the substrateon which parts will be mounted.

In either case, Adornador componentscan be treated just like wood. Pilastersand headers can be cut using a standardhand saw. All parts accept screws with-out pre-drilling and will never crack orsplit. Pilasters can even be bent slightlyto accommodate crooked walls oropenings.

When installing a pediment, use theH430 Triglyph Header to adapt it to anywidth doorway. Cut out a section at thecenter of the H430 and cover the jointwith the H440 Keystone. On a narrowdoorway, keep the H430 the samewidth as the pediment. On a widedoorway, let the H430 extend beyondthe pediment.

InstallationThe key to success when working withdecorative moulding is to carefully planyour layout. Use pencil or chalk lines tolay out each panel or rail before fixingany moulding in place.

When creating wall or ceiling panels,corners can be mitered or you can usedecorative panel corners. Mouldingscan be cut using a standard hand sawand any miter box. Apply a bead of latexadhesive caulk to the back of the

moulding before nailing it in place withcountersunk finishing nails. Joints andedges can be filled with adhesive caulk.One 101/2 fl oz (300 ml) tube of caulk isenough to install about 50 feet (15 m) ofdecorative moulding, using a single 1/4"(6 mm) bead along the back surface.

To complete your installation, fill the nailholes using a clean, wet putty knife (oryour finger) and a sandable non-shrinking latex filler (spackling.)

Decorative MouldingsBalmer VI decorative mouldings can be used in many ways. They are oftenused to create wall panels, chair rail, wainscoting or ceiling panels.

Four applications of Balmer VI polyurethane decorativemoulding are shown here. A decorative moulding is combinedwith a wood baseboard to create an attractive door casing.Another is added beneath a cornice to create the appearanceof a larger cornice. A third decorative moulding defines aceiling panel. The fourth is used to create a chair rail.

3465 Recessed Gypsum Dome

The elegant 3465 Pearl Dome ismade of glass fibre reinforcedgypsum cement. It has an outsidediameter of 413/4" (106 cm) and aninside diameter of 36" (91 cm). The3465 requires a ceiling recess of 38"(97 cm) diameter and 61/2" (17 cm)depth.

This large one piece dome can beinstalled using a gypsum adhesive,such as Sheetrock™ 90 (made byUnited States Gypsum Company)and countersunk drywall screwsthrough the integral rim into ceilingjoists or blocking.

To mount a Balmer VI ceiling center orsurface mounted dome, apply a 1/4" (6 mm) bead of latex adhesive caulk tothe perimeter of the back surface of theproduct. Press it into place and fasten itwith three trim head screws. Wipe off

any excess caulk and blend the edgeseam with a clean, wet cloth. Thescrews should be placed such that theirrecessed heads can be easily filled andblended to a smooth finish using a non-shrinking latex filler (spackling.)

3457-PL Dome

The 3457-PL Surface MountedDome is cast in Balmer’s exclusivepolyurethane formulation. Thisdome requires no recess in theceiling for installation. It has adiameter of 275/8" (70 cm) and aprojection of 31/2" (9 cm).

The 1911 four piece kit can be adjusted to fit any size fireplace opening up to60 by 49 inches using a standard hand saw. Trim for width by removing equalamounts from the left and right mantel halves at the top center. Trim forheight at the bottom of the left and right mantel halves where they fit intothe mantel bases. The bases add 61/4" (16 cm) to the mantel height.
