Principal's Message: Hello Balmoral families. Time again to reflect on our October school activities, and time to plan for November. The Junior Kindergarten program started in mid-October. Some of the little ones have siblings in the school and it was cute to see the siblings peeking into the kindergarten classroom to say hello to their brother or sister. October is bus safety month and Mr. Chapiel led our students in a bus safety evacuation drill. October is also the time for progress conversations. Thank you to the families for participating, and thank you to those parents who waited patiently for their visit. And of course, lets not forget to mention Halloween. After the Halloween parade, each student received a bag of chips from student council. The student council was busy. They also created a maze in the life skills room for the grade 4 - 8 students to experience some more Halloween fun. November is a busy time for teachers. Teachers will be assessing where students are at in preparation for Term I Report Cards, which go home November 29 th . Once report card comments are completed, I read through them and then connect with the teacher before they are printed. I like to have reports ready for printing the week prior to sending them home. Sometimes there are a few kinks to work out when it comes to printing, so we want to have enough time to manage any of those issues to ensure that report cards are ready to be sent home on the Friday. Please be sure to reach out to your childs teacher if you have any questions. Enjoy the snow, and stay safe. Page 2 FIVE WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MOOD

November can be a tricky month; the days are noticeably shorter and the temperatures are getting colder. When we have these seasonal changes, we may notice a change in our mood. Here are five easy ways to improve your mood that are simple yet very rewarding.

1. Give something back. You might not feel your best right now, but it has been proven that moods can improve with random acts of kindness: helping someone with a chore, presenting a friend with a small gift or writing that note of appreciation you have been meaning to send.

2. Get moving. Whether it is taking a walk around your neighbourhood, dancing to your favourite tunes, or raking leaves or shoveling snow, exercising improves your physical and mental well-being.

3. Remove that frown. Read a funny book or do something that feels silly; a smile can improve your mood, confidence and the way others see you.

4. Stay positive. Instead of dwelling on what is wrong, or what you feel is wrong, get into the habit of positive self-talk. Remember, the way you think affects the way you feel.

5. Give yourself some credit. List your achievements on a piece of paper, and then take some time to be proud of what you have accomplished.

The best option when all else fails? Talk to someone. Whether it is a parent, friend, or older sibling, contact with other people gives you a chance to talk through what is bothering you and lighten your mood.

On October 22, 2019 Mr. Chapiel led the students in a bus evacuation drill.

This procedure is performed twice a year to teach students the proper way to evacuate

in case of an emergency situation.

Thanks to Mr. Chapiel.

In October, we have been focused on learning all about pumpkins! In math, we have measured, weighed, and counted a variety of pumpkins. We also did some problem solving with our pumpkins. In science we studied our pumpkins, first by learning about how they grow, then by making observational drawings. Our learning concluded with carving pumpkins with our buddies in Grade One and Grade 5/6!

A is for alligator, B is for bear, C is for cat…the Grade 1 students are learning a lot of information about animals! We even used our teddy bears in Math to sort them, from smallest to largest, and weigh them. We also did a gummy bear experiment. The Grade 1 class even had some special guests come to our room to help us learn about bears and cats. Mrs. Margetts brought a bear head for the students to see, and Mrs. Tervoort brought her cat Percy for a visit.

The Grade 3/4 class is part of the Roots of Empathy program this year! We had our first baby visit on October 22nd and learned a lot about baby Jameson. Jameson is four months old. He loves to eat and

sleep and enjoys going for walks outside. He likes playing and loves when his older sisters read to him. Jameson even rolled over all by himself for the first time during our visit! We can’t wait to see how much Jameson grows and develops over the course of the school year!

We welcome and say goodbye to Jameson by

touching his toes as we sing to him.

Globes to Maps – Students tried to convert a map from a globe to a 2D map, using a map projection technique that map makers use.

Fraction, Decimal, & Percent Activity:

Students had to organize a collection of fractions, decimal, & percent into a large time line in the gym.

Growing Igneous Rock & Moh’s Hardness Scale – Students observed igneous rock crys-tals that we created in class, and then tested other rocks using hardness as a measurement.

Thank you Mrs. Tervoort!

Bag Up Manitoba

We collected a total of 2,200 plastic bags

throughout the month of October. the

bags are delivered to a processing plant

so they can be made into practical and

usable items, such as planters, bird

houses, frisbees, and benches. Thank you

for helping keep the plastic out of the

environment!

Timmy the Tumble Bag was written by Tom Ethans, who is the executive director of Take Pride Winnipeg. We have a copy of his book in the school. Mr. Ethans presented our school with the bench that is located in the front entry.
